Greg Gutfeld made a salient observation the other day. He pointed out that liberalism thrives in times in which there are no crises. In times such as those, liberalism raises lightweight issues and gives them gravitas. School lunch programs, child obesity, the size of soda drinks, gay rights, free contraception, are their rallying "causes celeb". However, when crisis presents itself, we reap the consequences of liberalism in governmental leadership. More frequent now are the vapid responses to crisis led by the conveniently appointed, those "politically correctly" installed into position of power. The responses tend to be inept and politically expedient. Imagery, polls and elections are the focus rather than the required action and solution. Is seems to be contrary to their DNA to depart from the warm and fuzzy to the tactful, strategic and necessary.

It's almost as if one of the symptoms of Ebola is an unaccountable urge to travel and spread the virus.
And now we have a lawyer who is known as a political fixer of political problems being named the Ebola czar. Brilliant. Remember, everything is under control.

In Michigan, we had over a week off from work, and that was everyone except emergency personnel, not just teachers. Everything was completely shut down. Even snowplows couldn't get through. There were 12 foot drifts, and cars were abandoned on the roads. They ended up clearing streets with front end loaders and road construction equipment.
It was great. We cross country skiid to the closest store to stock up, and spent the time baking brownies and making chili. People with snow mobiles went from house to house asking if anyone needed prescriptions picked up. Good times.

I hadn't been through that neck of the woods for probably ten or twelve years until last spring driving back from Dillon . I was stunned by the boat traffic on the river from Wolf Creek all the way down to the exit closest to Great Falls .had to be 100 boats ( spread out ) on that stretch .

Once in college, I was at a party and a guy there I knew fairly well, who was drunk and pretty despondent over his girlfriend leaving him, started ranting and talking crazy about how he was going to kill himself. He started running for the door. I grabbed his arm and he pushed me -with force. He was a thin guy (a runner) and I was in much better shape than I am now. I flew backwards and hit the wall with force and slid down on my ass. He said "Oh, God, Donna, I'm sorry" and came over and helped me up and apologized 10 million times. I didn't hold it against him. I knew he was basically a good guy. (And he didn't kill himself.) But I had a bump on the back of my head the next day.
That made me realize that even with toned arms, I wasn't really capable of fighting an average-sized man who really intended to hurt me. This guy wasn't built like a linebacker and that push sent me flying.

However, it may now suddenly have become difficult to obtain said cans. I am given to understand that supplies of prep food have abruptly been cleaned out all across the continent, for some unaccountable reason. I blame sunspots.

I forgot you were from IA, not far from here (Dixon). We now have turkeys also, the stae of IL introduced them maybe 30 yrs ago.
When my Dad was a kid on the farm, late 40s, early 50s there were no deer around. Now the area is lousy w/ 'em. Things come and go, it's the natural order od things, w/ human interference sometimes.
We now have pelicans stopping on the Rock River, that started about 10 yrs ago.

My grandma , although a wonderful southern country cook , absolutely could not handle game . Quail and doves , hard fried to a consistency somewhere between boot leather and hard rubber . Venison , forget it .
Regular southern cookery , she was an artist .

My sister and I laugh about how bad a cook my mom was. But we have to bow and say thanks when we think of how we were spoiled with homemade bread. Her apple turnovers were heaven. Her baking made up for her cooking.
Funny, because both my brothers get offended and angry when my sis and I laugh about mom's cooking. Well, mom did always like them more. Linda and I say "Remember her greasy soup (our term for her beef barley soup - she apparently never thought to skim the fat off of soup) And what about that awful liver and onions? Or the chili that was like tomato sauce and hamburger?"
The boys (now in their 50's and 60's) don't like anybody disrespecting my mother - not even her daughters. It's funny - I think mothers and daughters see each other more coldly and clearly than mothers and sons do. That might be true of fathers and sons also. My father was tougher on the boys than he was on his little girls.

It was great. We cross country skiid to the closest store to stock up, and spent the time baking brownies and making chili. People with snow mobiles went from house to house asking if anyone needed prescriptions picked up. Good times.
And The Salvation Army Band played, and the children drank lemonade, and the morning lasted all day....
Seriously, that sounds great, and I bet supplies were obtained, and prescriptions acquired, and much fun was had by all, while still getting vital tasks done as a community. The one thing you didn't need was government, neither "help" nor supervision.
A deep snow in most cities, OTOH....

Of course not. I'm not a chef, nor do I have a compulsion to spend hours using every pan and pot in the kitchen to make a meal. If its freshly shot, it gets processed quickly, and hopefully the edible bits are enjoyed. As someone else said, most folks view muley's as dog food.

Nothing like AoSHQ pudding. It's a pastry, shaped like a bowl of sorts, holding beef gravy and served w/ roast beef.
Very tasty, the wife had made it since our trips to the UK and she's good at it. Prolly not considered health food by Moochelle.

Essentially an English flour, eggs and milk based muffin served with drippings or gravy. I don't make them, but instead much prefer an American popover. Popovers are lighter, and best when piping hot from the oven, and slathered with real butter.

When you do it properly, you will want to waste as little of the meat as possible on such processing.
Jerky is for tough cuts of meat. If you want to grind meat, do it at the time of use and you will find your burger tastes much better for the minor effort.

My parents were kids during the depression. They are just about anything that was butchered on the farm. Never cared for tongue but to this day love liver & onions. I agree with you on a moms thanksgiving dinner. My wife tries, but it just isn't the same

Most of the time, we'd just cut it up for sandwiches...
...I was rather fond of it; very firm, but tasty.
She didn't do anything special to it, just browned the sides and bottom, then put in a covered roaster and cooked it in the oven. I probably should ask her for cooking instructions and write it down.
I do know it's something you have to get from a butcher's shop... it isn't something you can pick up just anywhere.

That was another staple meat in our house that I love. Mom would cook it in bacon fat so how could she go wrong.
It is odd none of those things are cheap anymore though. So I haven't had either in quite a while.

When we had to put Mom in the home (alzheimers) if she had one can of pumpkin pie filling she had 25 along with condensed milk in the pantry. I'm not a pumpkin pie fan but I always are some of hers

I was once the salad and sandwich maker at a hotel restaurant and (surprisingly) got a lot of room service orders for tongue sandwich. It initially grossed me out a bit to slice up a - tongue, which is unmistakably a tongue. I finally braced myself and tried it myself - and I thought it was pretty good. But I've never seen it in a regular grocery store.

Sounds rather like the dutch apple pie my gram used to make. She cut a round hole in the middle of the top crust, baked the apple pie, and then when it was done she poured about a cup of heavy cream into that hole, while it was still hot.

I make pumpkin pie from puree'd pumpkins and I like to use my own because I can. I freeze the puree in red solo cups that hold 2 cups.
So you defrost the puree
and mix in:
2/3 C brown sugar
1/2 tsp ginger
2 eggs, beaten
2/3 C dry milk
1/2 tsp salt
any spices you feel like.
and bake at 350F until done in the middle.
I've never been a condensed milk baking fan.

Speaking of feeling your age...I was 55 when I had hip replacement surgery. Turns out I had congenital hip dysplasia that had never been diagnosed.
After back surgery 2 years later for the sciatica it caused I'm better today than I was in my early 50s. There is hope that it's not all a steady decline.

Absolutely perfect and delicious.
Damn near impossible to find these days. I did find a bit of classic nonprocessed farm lard via Northern Commiefornia obsessive foodie circles. Used it for fried chicken instead of pie.
By the way? Lard-fried chicken is FOR THE WIN. That is all.

My Mom's was OK, I think she catered to my quirky dislikes. But later in life she would make some dinners I could hardly eat as she forgot what her little precious liked. LOL
I remember a grt grandma's cooking as good, PA Dutch background. Her chicken and noodles and chocolate cookies were to die for!
But I'm very lucky. My wife likes to cook, she's a natural, and worked in restaurants when we were young. She's shooting herself in the foot now, cause I can get much better meals at home than we can get going out. TY Jules.

I have an aunt Beverly who, when I was growing up, was famous for "the Bev Buffet" -- like getting a single large pizza for everyone when we came by (that would be four adults and three kids). We'd all joke about it as we ate our "pre-dinners" before we went to their house.
We tend to do the opposite. We've had board meetings of our fish club here where, not only did everyone leave stuffed, most folks had goodie-bags of leftovers. Many have reported back that their kids liked the desserts.

In the early 80's, I traveled over 500 miles up the Queensland coast to stand in line for the opening of a tuck shop that was famous for its pies. They were almost sold out at 9am.
It was worth it. I camped on the beach over night, and was first in line the next day. Bought a dozen that time.
I wish I could do that again.

Perhaps in some cases. But my mother was a terrible cook. One year she tried to cook the turkey in the microwave and it basically crystallized. So we started having Kentucky Fried Chicken for Thanksgiving...until they weren't open on Thanksgiving anymore. The first year that happened, we had fried eggs for Thanksgiving dinner. Subsequent years were...worse.
Long story short, I had to learn to cook for myself, starting from square one. My wife, being Italian, also did not have a lot of experience with the traditional Thanksgiving menu. Now we brine the turkey and then slow roast it in the oven, make our gravy from scratch, and experiment with different approaches to mashed potatoes. Our current favorite involves using cream cheese and butter.

Tell me about it. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, my relatives inevitably send people home with plenty of turkey and stuffing and fruit salad in tupperware containers, because they invited 20 and cooked enough for 40.
I always automatically double recipes when I have people over, even when the recipe says "serves 4" and 4 people are having dinner. I'm terrified that I'll run out of food and someone will go home hungry.

There are a couple of food-related memes that I've been spreading for years. One of which is that the preparation of food to be tantalizing to the senses is actually of interplanetary origin, and was carried to earth on a meteor that landed near Florence, Italy, somewhere around the time of the Etruscans. From there it spread in ripples across Europe, being partially blocked by the Alps and nearly thwarted at the English Channel.
Another is my story about fine teas and tea blends, which the fiancee used to great effect in her recent travels. As I tell it, there is a huge tea warehouse near London that is mainly responsible for the worldwide distribution of tea (a relic of the Empire).
In it, bales of tea from all over are wheeled in a constant stream to a room of experts. One expert uses a special tool to core out a small sample from the bale; this is handed off to another expert who crumbles the sample in his fingers, sniffs it, occasionally infuses it in water -- but not always -- most of the time it is merely thrown aside....and discusses the results from the next official; the final official consults the great book in which tea demand and supply are reconciled and issues determinations.
A bale comes in, the sample is taken, it is evaluated, its particulars are reviewed, and the verdict is: "this is fine Indian tea, let it be sent to our friends in London." The next bale comes in: "this is fine Kenyan tea, let it be sent to our friends in Madras." Another bale: "this is middling Indian tea, ship it off to Gloucester."
This continues throughout the day, until the hour grows late....and then the Lords of Tea say, "we're done for the day, sweep all that stuff off the floor, ship it to America, and turn off the lights."

It's a 'kids anime', sorta... kinda hard to explain, too many different parallels to explain properly. You'll have to watch it yourself to understand.
Bottom line: Ghibli fans will love it, and they can plunk their kids down in front of the tube and not have worry for a moment about what they're gonna see.
It sorta has the feel of those animes made back in the 80's that were based off the 'classic' stories (Anne of Green Gables, etc.). E.G.--utterly 'family friendly'.
Watch it and you'll understand what I'm trying to get across...

I've thoroughly infected the fiancee with this one to the point where she did a Toastmasters speech on it. Seems that the original restaurant in Buellton -- known as "the font" -- has a subterranean vault guarded by soldiers in futuristic jumpsuits where a crack in the wall oozes pea soup. A secret factory complex then captures the soup, cans it, and ships to grocery stores throughout the state. Buckets of the soup are also regularly hauled to the restaurant above through a rough shaft coarsely drilled through the native rock.

At the restaurant, it's served with an odd sliced bread that contains cheese and poppy seeds -- as well as a cracker that strongly resembles Ry-Krisp, and sides of butter.
For me, the little ritual involved is adding ham and bacon, then stirring in, then peppering the top, then adding croutons, then thoroughly buttering the bread and dipping until the butter partially melts. You then eat the bread to new butter and repeat until the soup is cooled enough to snarf down by itself, alternating with the goat food.
Oh, and that's another story.....the LA Zoo's petting zoo -- which, like many, is full of goats -- used to sell Ry-Krisps to feed the goats with. Took me years to figure out that they were ordinarily a people food.

Standard split-pea soup recipes (as well as their close cousins, lentil soups), work better if they get a hit with an immersion blender along the way, as well as added herbs and spices.

It really depends on what sort of pea soup you're looking to have.
I haven't previously heard of using corn starch to thicken the soup -- I generally end up trying to lighten it.

I'm awake because meds have been changed to DEA & I have new prescriptions & anything new will make me tired for one, maybe two days.
Ice had these before & same thing happened &'they do not help.
I liked less ( until SCOAMF & admin got involved & it was beautiful day here in mid 70sbyesterdatn& all I did out in garden was put used coffee grounds around a rose.
I've got Starbucks phone number to,ask them to save me coffee grounds for a day & pick up.
They took my brother off ventilator Thursday after 1 pm.

I dunno about anyone else, but when I buy more than I can use in one shot, I freeze it in the marinade. I'd figure venison worked the same way, since you get one animal's worth of meat and only need one meal's.

I haven't been hunting in years (due to location), but family all have freezers in their garages for extra meat. My uncle in the last around who still actively hunts as the cousins haven't taken to it.
Reading the thread, Thanksgiving is my job,but I always leave the kitchen in a state that it takes awhile to clean. Last year my wife walked in and asked, "has the bomb squad done there thing and left or are they still on the way?" Heh.

Howdy, Carol -- I've got to say, I'm getting touchy about events. I would rationally think that "[t]hey took my brother off ventilator Thursday after 1 pm" means that they are confident in Paul's ability to breathe on his own, and that this would be a great relief to him.
Unfortunately, I'm just paranoid enough to think that the Death Panels might have decided that he's done and that he is being sentenced to acute (and possibly terminal) respiratory distress.
Please tell me that Paul being off a ventilator is good news.

I asked man at that store & he said it's been the same.

.man told me that so R idiotic group made them h & cows had to ear environmentally new grass.
If you used to buy Parmesesn Reggjiano cheese I suggest you try small piece (if you grate it) or small container if you are like me & buy grated Reggianio Parmesean cheese.
It's not worth price now because cows had to eay new grass!

That sounds like the idiotic FDA thing about aging cheese on wooden boards. It's part-and-parcel of the style of cheese, it's been done for several hundred years without incident, but they just decided that it's illegal because they're not sterile. Hey, guess what -- cheese becomes cheese through bacterial action.....of course it's not sterile!

I'm sorry, it's dark out but warm here. I went outside to sweep and/or pick up leaves from rose beds, maple tree leaves.
The nurse said Pail was able to keep his airway open to breathe on his own.
My nephew, his son, works at hospital as Certified Nursing Assistant & my neice met me at ICU Tuesday. I told her & she knows her brother doesn't return calls.
I sent text on Wednesday to tell him to cut Paul's nails if & when he is back at nursing home. I don't send text messages & was shocked that he replied "of course, auntie'"
I don't know if his mother yelled at him or if he heard something when Paul was brought in. Paul Jr. works overnight in ER.
He's replied several times & he's been to see his father every day. He lives within 5 minutes of hospital walking.
I haven't been to that hospital since 1997 & it took me longer to find area for visitor parking than finding hospital.
My neice went there to see me, not Oaul.
If Conservative Crank is still around, he can confirm they have to be sedated to tolerate ventilator.
I'm going to wait until,8 am to call & ask how Paul is doing.

I didn't sleep much. My youngest has a cold. He actually had a great night, but since he fell asleep on the couch, I slept on the loveseat. Not comfy. Tossed and turned, worried the cats who kept checking on me.
Since he was up at 5am yesterday, I'm so far behind on sleep that I will probably conk out this afternoon. Which would be much easier to do if my husband were in town...

My brother has almost died at least 20 times since March 30, 2013 & one of these days he's not going to be able to rebound I wass worried Monday when the hospital told me they were going to keep in before 9 am & to call back in an hour. Noon n
Woman said he was in ICU & tried to put me through to nurse & came back to tell me which doctor would call.
He's a quadriplegic from multiple strep infections. They took far too long to do full body MRI & found infection was also in cervical spine (neck) & that's what caused, I believe & none has refuted it, that caused it.
It's took 8 days after he was removed from vent in April last year before they did MRI & foiund (?) infection was in cervical spine & he has accesses in it.
