Obamacare Website Won't Reveal New, Higher Premiums -- Until After the Election, Of Course

Via Drudge, The Most Transparent Administration in History strikes again.

Valerie Richardson writes at The Washington Times:

Those planning to purchase health insurance on the Obamacare exchange will soon find out how much rates have increased -- after the Nov. 4 election.

Enrollment on the Healthcare.gov website begins Nov. 15, or 11 days after the midterm vote, and critics who worry about rising premium hikes in 2015 say that’s no coincidence. Last year’s inaugural enrollment period on the health-care exchange began Oct. 1.

Robert Laszewski, president of Health Policy and Strategy Associates, said in a Monday column in USA Today that "when it comes to a lack of openness and transparency about Obamacare, this administration has no peer."

Information is leaking out, though, and we know we're due for some hefty increases. In three states with highly-contested Senate races (I'll send you to the link to find them out) they're expecting double-digit rate increases.

And of course Obama hides this from you; because, of course.

28 My employer sent out its open-enrolment (fucking Brit speling) flyer last week. HSA plan--deductible went up, company HSA contribution cut in half. I can get a few extra dollars--not as many as last year--in my HSA if I sign a document promising to not use tobacco. There's also a $500 "surcharge" if your spouse (or domestic partner) has a job that offers health insurance but is on your plan (I would have tacked on a surcharge for adult children but I'm a H8r).

But no mandatory weigh-ins. Yet.

102 Repeal, repeal, repeal.

There are so many negative effects of 404Care that are easily provable, yet the GOPe stays as quiet as a churchmouse about it.

Do. Not. Get.

"We've tried it the Progressive's way and what did we get from it? A notable decline in our standard of living and our freedom (accompanied by charts, big ones with pretty colors, all pointing downward)..."

...said no Pubbie in recent history.

A simple recognition of facts would suffice, but the GOPe can't even do that.

They're not even trying... but 52% of the voting population is so stupid, so evil, or so addicted to free handouts from the nannystate that they don't have to try. Why pretend, when you own the souls of so many voters?

Small businesses are getting hosed. I dunno if you're hitting that number counting any money moved via your company (for tax purposes or not).

But it likely doesn't matter, as I noted, small businesses are being hosed.
In some respects they always have been, but it's worse now.

Those of us who spend a lot of time in large group plans may not see a ton of 4 figure premiums for a variety of reasons. The fact that even those seem to be rapidly approaching 4 figures is quite scary.

Keep in mind, I used to work for a self-insuring academic medical center. BC (Before Choomboy) insurance was dirt cheap. They covered most of it, and we paid what was effectively a rounding error on my check every 2 weeks (seriously.) But even looking at total cost it was something like 170/pay period for a single plan (my cost+theirs) and it was nice insurance, no deductible, tiny ass copays, huge network. But again: huge group, self insuring medical center.

Talking with people still working there, it sounds like employee contributions have gone up approaching an order of magnitude, deductibles have skyrocketed, the network has shrunk to almost nothing AND they're pushing people to the high deductible plans over the old "HMO-ish" (it was technically an HMO, but the network was so large and you could self refer it didn't really act like one.)

As I said, it's hard out there.

The costs were ~$400/mo and slowly rose to ~$550 until 2011. The last three years have been incredible increases. Here's the kicker: we've NEVER met the deductible and actually used the insurance. EVER.

I have four single adult children age 19-24 on the plan only because they can be on this plan cheaper than their company provided plans (with employee shared costs).

I've been asking Blue Cross what it will be in 2015.... crickets (so far). The largest participant in the MN exchange dropped out this year. The MNSure exchange is doomed. We are doomed. I expect it to go over $1000/mo in 2015.

213 I wonder how many policies actually get grandfathered, too. Only policies purchased before March 23 2010 are eligible. I bought mine last year, so it isn't eligible. Anyone who went off their employer's insurance in the last four and a half years, if they got insurance, it will be canceled--and they should have or be about to receive their notice. I got mine last month.

Although it was worded slightly weaselly--don't worry, your coverage has been extended! ... To December 31.

215 It's sad that the two major parties are devolving into racial/ethnic voting blocs. Predictable, but sad.

This is what always happens in multi-ethnic societies. Hell, this is why the nation-state was invented in the first place.

It is human nature for people to band together into ethnic, linguistic, and religious tribes to gain power -- and they use that power to fuck over people in the other tribes.

In the coming decades, Repubs will constantly talk about trying to expand their vote share among non-whites, but it will always be easier to increase the white vote on the margn.

Even politicians who want to avoid racial and ethnic appeals will be tempted by it since it's just so much easier than making ideological and policy arguments.

Look at the black vote. Repubs have spent 50 years making arguments about abortion, school choice, illegal immigration, etc, etc. Dems skip all that crap and just repeat "Republicans hate black people" a million times an get 90% of the vote.

Mutli-ethnic societies splitting along racial, ethnic, linguistic, and religious lines doesn't even require especially evil politicians ... it's just human nature. It takes especially noble politicians to resist that.
