Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (7-21-2014)"The bear is loose!" President Obama has been saying, whenever he leaves the White House to visit Starbucks, or sandwich shops, or burger joints, or BBQ shacks, or neighborhood diners, in his increasingly rote and pathetic attempts to "connect" with "real people." Obama, we have been told, is frustrated, "restless," bored with the responsibilities and chores of office. He thinks of himself as the bear-intimidating, wild, untamed, roving-escaping his den. But he is flattering himself. Obama is not the bear. He is the cub: aimless, naive, self-interested, self-indulgent, irresponsible, irresolute. The bear is in Moscow. We might as well replace the civil service with the spoils system. Because right now, we've just got a one-party spoils system. After 2000 years there are no more Christians in Mosul, Iraq. In a sort of reverse Passover, ISIS activists have marked the homes of Christians with the letter N for "Nassarah," an Islamic term for Christian, to identify the homes whose inhabitants were to be slaughtered. In Mosul, ISIS has decreed that Christians must convert to Islam, acknowledge their status as dhimmis and pay the Jizyah tax, or be beheaded. This shouldn't be surprising; it is nothing more than what the Koran prescribes. To their credit, Mosul's Christians have mostly left their homes behind and fled toward Kurdish-controlled areas where they believe they will be safe.
Oh Boy: 'Chelsea' Manning to Begin Gender Switch Treatment in Prison Sure betray your country by leaking national security documents, go to prison for 35 years, and we're still unable to deny you sexual reassignment treatments or anything else for that matter. The Federal Government Wants Shippers to Snoop on Your Packages Or else be indicted for not doing so like FedEx. Back in March of last year, we were somewhat disturbed by UPS agreeing to forfeit $40 million to the US government for shipping drugs from "illegal internet pharmacies." Not that such drugs or pharmacies should be legal (that's a whole different discussion), but it's insane to pin the blame for the shipments on the shipping company, whose sole job is to get packages from point A to point B. In fact, we don't want shipping companies to be liable for what's in packages, because then they have not just the incentive, but the mandate to snoop through all our packages. Why We Should Abolish the Corporate Income Tax In 2013, the corporate income tax brought in $274 billion, slightly less than 10 percent of total federal revenue. Yet the endless arms race between the IRS and corporate attorneys and accountants consumes huge amounts of money, resources, and labor and vastly distorts the business environment. UN Finds Rockets in a UN School, Returns Them to Hamas Of course. To do any less might somehow in some fashion possibly help the Juice. And that is against the unofficial UN charter. University of Wisconsin Faculty Votes to Apportion Grades by Race That framework includes eight essential "working definitions," among them the already-discussed diversity, as well as others: "compositional diversity," "critical mass," "inclusion," "equity mindedness," "deficit-mindedness," "representational equity," and "excellence." Maybe they should simply cut to the chase and start just handing out Bachelors of Thinkology to their favored minorities. He was one of the few major actors who could seamlessly switch between TV and movies. And one of the last Hollywood actors who was also a combat veteran: Later, he joined the National Guard serving seven months in the United States. He then went to Korea for 14 months in the Regular Army, serving in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War. He was wounded twice, first in the face and hand from shrapnel fire from a mortar round, and second on April 23, 1951, in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dove headfirst into a foxhole. Garner was awarded the Purple Heart in Korea for the first injury. For the second wound, he received a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: "As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy"), although Garner received the medal in 1983, 32 years after his injury. Garner was a self-described "scrounger" for his company in Korea, a role he later played in The Great Escape and The Americanization of Emily. Here's a classic Garner scene from The Americanization of Emily. The Happiness Benchmark by State How much money do you need to make before you start maxing out your monetary happiness? Despite the saying, money can buy happiness-but only up to a certain point. For each state, the annual salary you need to make before more money won't make you any happier is contingent, understandably, on the cost of living. The Huffington Post developed this map to show the happiness-plateau salary for each state based on new analysis by Doug Short, vice president of research at investment group Advisor Perspectives. Short's analysis combines the findings of a 2010 Princeton study by Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, which set the national "happiness-benchmark" at $75,000 per year, with data about the cost of living in each state. Many of youse will remember a big long so-called banking reform movement, following the "Ohio Savings and Loan" and "Keating Five" scandals. The reform act that was passed, a whole bunch of people said, would lead to just a dozen or less large financial institutions in the country, with way too much power and influence, and easily controlled by insiders.
As I recall the argument, GOP said oh no, we'd never let that happen, and the Dems said that would be the greatest thing evah, but that will never happen. It's only been about 20 years, and not only did it happen just as predicted, but the sumbitch has already blowed up once or twice. But as I say, "Many of youse," on account of no one else in this great land has any memory what so ever of life before the megabanks. That's how the ratchet gets tightened. People are amazingly adaptable, and seem never to try to go back to what they had before. Ergo, the Bank of Taco Bell. Posted by: Stringer Davis at July 21, 2014 10:58 PM (xq1UY) 50

They have the original telegram on Dec. 7th from Pearl Harbor ("This Is No Drill"); a real ENIGMA machine; Hitler's speech notes for his Reichstag speech; Churchill's notes for one of his great speeches; and a lot more -- you literally won't believe you're looking at all this.
Rendell, the curator, said he bought a lot of this stuff years ago, back when no one, believe it or not, was collecting it -- some of it is the Holy Grail of WW II memorabilia. The exhibit runs in NYC at the Grolier Club until August 2nd. Seriously, if you're a history buff, especially of that war, you must not miss it. " Corporations should not pay taxes, period. It's just another way for govt to exert control. And look at the mountains of people, (e.g., accountants, lawyers) intelligent people, whose only purpose is to avoid or minimize taxes. Any taxes a business pays are passed on in higher prices for goods and services anyway. The consumers ay the "business" taxes. The "owners" of businesses, small and large, already pay taxes on the dividends an salaries they receive. A favorite WWII film is Enigma with Kate Winslet, Saffron Burrows and some fucking limeys. Does a great job of capturing the quiet desperation of England during the war. Also, Ms. Burrows' perky boobies. The film was produced by Mick Jagger and Lorne Michaels (yes, that one). Jagger lent his personally owned original 4 rotor Enigma machine to the film as a prop. "Every ethnic minority who graduates from that school will automatically be considered inferior to a white student."
Today's already existing reality. Many people now automatically assume that black and Hispanic students have been given a leg up in the grading process over their white and Asian fellow students. With considerable factual basis. At my alma mater, dear old Whassamatta U, old hands tell me the institutional pressure to pass black and Hispanic students is crushing. It's one thing to hand out easy high grades in soft subjective Something Something Studies, but in rigorous objective STEM fields, things aren't so easy. So huge resources get poured into "tutoring" which verges on outright handing out exam answers in advance, and perks like special ethnic-minority office hours. And still, certain students just aren't performing. The obvious answer is, flunk them out of the university, or at least redirect them to Something Something Studies. But no. Instead, the junior and adjunct profs without tenure, who carry most of the undergrad teaching load, are being quietly told that they need to pass X number of black/Hispanic students, or else their own hopes of career advancement are toast. This is ultimately going to rot the entire structure and render these degrees completely worthless for hiring and professional qualification purposes. "It was announced today that this June was the hottest on record."
The crew over at Anthony Watts' site have been meticulously dissecting all of these bullshit claims. It turns out to be pretty easy to generate "record heat" when you go back in and quietly retroactively adjust the historical temperature figures downward. Which is what has been going on. On the up side, I really do get the sense that even in places like Commiefornia, the popular zeitgeist is starting to realize that something is amiss. People are looking out their own windows and saying, hold on a second, this is just weather, and within the personally experienced normal scope of historical weather to boot. The scam still seems to work on the yoof, but then again, their memories of what the normal scope of weather is are necessarily short ones. As they move into their 30s and beyond, they too may start to quietly wonder about the discrepancy between their own observations and the official dogma. As for the racial grading...How do they plan to account students of mixed race? What if you're 50/50 black/white (like, say, our Dear Leader)? What if you're multiple races/ethnicities? Say hispanic/anglo/afro-caribbean? Race, like much of life, is never clear cut. (It's mostly all just made up horseshit, too, but that's another discussion.) Progressive racialists are nothing but nuevo-segregationists. At some point they'll eventually conclude that racial and ethnic mixing is bad simply for the fact that it makes it that much harder to make sense of their own fucking bullshit. All the prepainted parts were still attached to trees. Meaning I paid over $200 for a model I would still have to cut off trees and do touch up painting hoping to match what was originally used. Alternatively, same situation -- the dog would know that you had sex with someone else 6 hours ago +/- 30 minutes? How about if you're cruising internet pr0n sites? You don't think they know you clicked "underage, underage lesbian, lesbian, lesbian, gangbang"? -- you're hopelessly naive. Now they're going to pretend they don't know that -- lest the price of actual paper Penthouse magazines skyrocket, and internet traffic decline by a third -- but....pfft!....they know that. At the time it was written that didn't seem all that wild. Before the explosion of storage facilities, the ones I saw were a bit different. One place near where I grew up was popular among bands that didn't have access to a garage as a rehearsal space. There was usually power available and I suspect a few of those band members were living there at least briefly. The nicer units had a big rollup door and a regular door, so it wasn't too much unlike a very rough bedroom. Posted by: Epobirs at July 22, 2014 01:37 AM (NLEgK) 381

I posted this in the wrong thread by mistake:
253 University of Wisconsin Faculty Votes to Apportion Grades by Race A law should be passed forcing liberals to live with consequences of their idiocy. In this particular case, anyone registered Dem or other leftist party, and/or provably leftist, should be legally estopped from ever using any: --Doctors; --Surgeons; --Lawyers; --Engineers; or --Accountants, that were able to matriculate at a school without affirmative action, graduate from school without affirmative action, or be hired without affirmative action. It should be a crime for a liberal to utilize any professional that is not an AA recipient for getting into college, grad school, and getting a job. So, every liberal will have to have open heart surgery by a surgeon who only got into his undergrad by virtue of race, only got into his medical school by virtue of race, and only got his residency by virtue of race. Now, I'm sure that 9 time out of 10 the affirmative-action heart surgeon is capable. but, I am also certain he is not even close to being the best money can buy. So, instead of having a 90% chance of survival, you only have an 80% chance (I'm making these numbers up). I'm sure that is perfectly fine for a liberal. I'm sure that when push comes to shove and their own life or freedom is at stake, the lower standards of affirmative action are good enough for them. For a profession with very objective standards like surgery - AA probably doesn't let through really, really bad surgeons. Now, when you get into things that aren't as objectively verifiable as heart surgery, the results of lower standards wrought by AA are far more noticeable. So, if you are a liberal on trial for murder and your entire criminal defense team is nothing but AA attorneys, you are going to be upset because your chances of getting off just declined by about 70%. But, by all means liberals, it makes perfect sense to no longer have merit mean anything and instead base everything on race. Liberals should also live in areas served entirely by firefighters, EMTs, and police hired entirely based on race. They should be forced to send their kids to schools where the teachers/administrators are hired entirely based on race. the problem rich liberals have is that their experience with AA is so removed from reality. An example. In the legal profession, the top firms can hire attorneys based on race and get very good attorneys. they may lower their standards "a tad" to get the attorneys, but they are still getting solid people. Same with top-tier private schools. But, once you drop away from the top, say, 5% of things, the drop-off in how far you have to lower standards to hire based on AA is dramatic. the rich liberals (or those in Ivory towers) never experience this - they are competing for the top tier of AA candidates, who while having lower credentials than their white counterparts, still have impressive credentials. But, if you are in a small city at a smaller law firm, the amount you have to reduce your standards to recruit a black attorney is incredibly noticeably significant. It's not a difference of a couple of points on a test. It is a difference between a natural "A" student in high school and someone struggling to get a "C". Posted by: Patrick Strei at July 22, 2014 09:48 AM (iVZfD) GOP can't win elections being the lighter version of the left. that is all they offer and all they do once in office. the idea of a "waver" happening for "yeah, give me the same, just a tiny bit less" is delusional.
