Whistle Blower Allegation: VA Tampered With Records To Hide Deaths Due To Wait Times
To their credit, CNN has owned this story and they've broken more news on it...according to an employee the VA is still engaging in a cover up and altering records to hide their murderous incompetence (auto-play video but worth a full read)
It was one of [VA employee Pauline] DeWenter's roles to call veterans when appointments became available to schedule them to get a consultation. Sometimes when she made those calls, she'd find that the veteran had died, so she would enter that on their records. But at least seven times since last October, records that showed that veterans died while waiting for care -- records which DeWenter personally handled and had entered in details of veterans' deaths -- were physically altered, or written over, by someone else, DeWenter said in an exclusive interview with CNN. The changes, or re-writes, listed the veterans as living, not deceased, essentially hiding their deaths. The alterations had even occurred in recent weeks, she said, in a deliberate attempt to try to hide just how many veterans died while waiting for care, by trying to pretend dead veterans remain alive.From Gabe's morning post the VA still is in denial about the extent of its problems. Seriously, tear it down. If this was a private hospital system, men and women in windbreakers with initials on the back and badges hanging from their necks would be swarming into offices, removing boxes of files and probably frog marching people out in handcuffs. But hey, it's the government so professional courtesy and wait for more IG reports. Added: Senate Democrats just don't care about dead veterans.

What pains me the most is, nothing is going to change.
The VA is has been broken for years, longer than I've been alive. The republicans won't deal with it, and the democrats are too tied to government run healthcare to acknowledge the problem.
At this point a starting point would be to fire 90% of the staff (especially the administrators, it's harder to fire the actual medical staff, and it's not clear they're the problem).
And that might not even fix it. You very much might have to scrap the whole thing and start over.
And since any transition period is (by the nature of transition) going to be tough, no one in DC is going to want to do it.

If we are going to keep the VA we are going to have to start limiting who is eligible . I want combat veterans and service related injuries or illnesses to get priority. I appreciate the service of the two year veteran who served stateside but whether the VA should continue to provide lifetime care for conditions unrelated to service at the expense of others has to be addressed. Though its the other third rail .

Transitions never go on without a hitch.
Once we get past it, it would most certainly be better for the people who matter (i.e. the vets.) but during the transition (especially with an openly hostile enemy, i.e. the bureaucrats) it'd be a bumpy ride.
The dems would start to care then, they'd find stories of people lost in paperwork mix ups, or the like and air them 24/7.
Remember, for the dem's it's not about the vets, it's about maintaining any illusion that the VA ever had good healthcare (spoiler: it didn't.) so they can push socialized medicine.
As I said before: Bernie Sander's (I-diot) is the last person who should be heading up a committee to investigate the VA. He's incapable of giving up his pipe dream of socialized medicine.

No. Why would we? Government is corrupt, inefficient and self serving, always in every single case from now until the end of forever and a week. This is not alterable or negotiable.
There is a need for some government, for things like having a name to put on the money, establishing and protecting borders and a small few other things, ok fine. But what things that is must remain limited, controlled and monitored.
Any breach of this scope will mushroom into massive corruption, greed, graft and criminality. As we are seeing now.
Keep the state out of the healthcare business. Allow vets to be treated by private industry, in the interests of caring for them well.
There is no acceptable sentence that begins with 'If we are going to keep the VA...' other than ' we are going to be screwed.'.
And all that goes for Obamacare as well.

And on another personal note, I have now gotten a taste of what hell might be like. It's going to involve have a massive sinus headache and chasing a small dog from room to room-a dog which continually barks and growls for over an hour and a half because it's only met you once and is too petrified to have leash put it to go for a walk while its "grandparents " are at some college orientation meeting and the "mother" (college graduate) is on some date an hour away. Yes, I'm sorry it's scared and I tried to be a nice as possible but the daughter should have had a date near her home- date which involved dog walking She's only had the dog for a couple of weeks. It shouldn't have been left alone with a stranger.

It's been alleged, but I don't know the specifics.
But given that the truth seems to be worse than every allegation, it's probably even worse than we suspect.
In the lab, several of our collaborators used to hold dual appointments at the VA (it was a way for the university to boost their salary.) As such they'd get access to the research resources there (a way for the VA to hang on to doctors.) Even in something simple like rodent housing the oversight just wasn't there.
And when it was found out that there was some..shall we say...regulatory non-compliance, the guy responsible just up and left to another institution and no one seemed to care.
But if I had done that, I'd be facing fines, and probably a 3 year NIH ban (if my school's animal program wasn't shut down and I wasn't summarily executed by them.)

There's a greenway trail in the city where my work is that is rife with homosexuals hooking up for anonymous action. It's gotten so bad that the city had to shut down parts of it. UC cops have been making busts on the trails. The pervs just openly approach whomever happens to be walking the trail, thinking they're there for the buttsecx. And on other parts of the trail, there are muggings and knockout games going on.

The same site reports 23.4 million living veterans in the U.S.
So, if the V.A. is such a paragon of healthcare delivery, why are only 78 percent of low-income vets enrolled? Where are they getting their care? Is there a maldistribution of facilities? Is there real or perceived dissatisfaction with care received in the VA system? Are some of them covered under private healthcare through an employer or other avenue? Does the VA system suck so badly that some of these vets are going without care as an alternative?
More importantly, what will happen when the entire country is placed under a system with virtually the same design, and there is no other option?

The main reasons Veterans prefer the VA to civilian hospitals is they feel they are better understood, and appreciated.
Obviously not everybody, but I know guys who would not go anywhere else.

I couldn't disagree more strongly. Sacrificing the health and welfare of all veterans just to save "things the VA does that civilian hospitals do not do" is crazy talk. It's akin to saying "there are things the private economy doesn't do well, so lets nationalize everything".
There is a compromise somewhere that allows America to sell off these facilities to a business that knows how to properly serve customers, give veterans vouchers they can use at any hospital of their choice nationwide, like Mayo or wherever and, if there are legitimately some specialities where a particular VA hospital has a specific practice that isn't available elsewhere, we can use some of the budget riches now being squandered to bribe some great hospital into replicating that practice.
But sacrifice everyone else in favor of a keeping a proven failure open? Let people die like this, just for the sake of a socialist dream like the VA?

It's worse than you think. From what I gather the employee is supposed to print any email they think pertinent to government business, save it in a file and then turn over to the National Archive.
Only the IRS counsels office has electronic backup. Some 3000 attorneys.

Each IRS employee had storage space for 6k emails on the server. Once an employee got close to the limit, they got prompted to archive off emails.
Apparently, Lois Lerner archived her excess emails to her hard drive. Which then awkwardly failed.
The backups were put on a tape drive, which was recycled after 6 mos. More than 6 mos had passed after Lerner's HD crashed and the missing emails were "discovered" and so the tape backups had already been overwritten.
This is what I understand so far.

There are all kinds of felonies going on here. The one I want to see most prosecuted is the one of getting bonuses and pay bumps for their work.
They were receiving those benefits because they were doctoring their records. So I believe that would either qualify as fraud, or perhaps as "theft by conversion". or both.

But I thought Hopenchange was gonna fix the VA. He said so in 2007-8 because Boooosh. From what I gather, the Law of Unintended consequences made shit worse. To lower the dreadful Booosh waiting times, SCOAMF and Shinseki devised a bonus plan for those that reduce waiting times. So, govt. workers being the lazy type, rather than actually reducing wait times through improved SERVICE, just fudged the numbers. See also unemployment numbers, inflation numbers, GDP numbers, etc.

Look at who has been quiet despite being in a position to actually get results.
This is a line that goes directly up to Boehner.
If--IF--the Republicans had any intent to actually do something, they wouldn't allow the Dems any slack whatsoever--Issa would be calling them to order, calling them out and naming their ploy, interrupting them every time they attempt to deflect or defend.
This is a raw abuse of power and only a brutal and raw use of power will call it to heal--anything less than shutting off the mics tells you they don't intend to tame this corruption.
There is no reason to let the Dems completely derail this issue UNLESS you have an agreement of "good cop/bad cop."
That's the game, here.
This is about as real as last Monday's WWE show.

Yes, indeedy - in recent years, chiefly, they've become rather expert in failing to actually schedule appointments and/or render needed (though expensive) care to their primary clientele, thus greatly increasing the likelihood of said clientele dying very soon - not (yet,anyway...) too many civilian hospitals "delivering" that sort of "service", I think...

Also very true - mostly on account of a) said Veterans' being told by their Gubment that their having served honorably entitles them to needed health care at very low cost via a VA facility, and b) said Vets' further expectation - also based on Gubment statements/documentation - that said low-cost (to them) care via the VA will be rendered promptly and at a comparable or greater level of quality to that obtainable from a civilian facility.
Of course, it's clear that in recent times, the Gubment has been lying to said Vets about b), but, you know...
