The "Othering" of Ted Cruz

Andrew Stiles writes of the practice of "Othering" -- which is really just a primitive impulse to say that anyone who is Not Like Us is almost certainly a savage monster capable of undreamed horrors -- and how Progressives have embraced it as a political Standard Operating Procedure.

The biological purpose of "Othering" -- dehumanizing, actually -- is to shut down all empathy towards the target so that a maximalist war can be fought against that target without any human fellow-feeling weakening the killer instinct.

It makes sense to dehumanize one's enemy in some contexts -- War, of course, most famously. And for the two to three hours of a sporting match. Football players, for example, fill their heads with notions of how their opponents have demeaned them and so on to get some good warrior game faces on. (Of course, football players also tend to shut down all that nonsense after the game is over; they don't move on to the next game still thinking about how awful and arrogant their last opponents were.)

But Progressives have decided, collectively, to just treat their fellow Americans as the dehumanized Other 24/7. Not just before an election, mind you, but every single day of every single year.

And they do so while chanting "No H8," their limited intellects, conditioned by those who manipulate them into hatred, not capable of seeing the irony.

9 Supposedly "othering" is the reason lefties hate "jingoism". If you're "jingoistic" you're blind to your country's flaws, and dehumanize the citizens of another country.

But in furtherance of Socialism, there is no such issue.

"It makes sense to dehumanize one's enemy in some contexts -- War, of course, most famously."

But to butcher what von Clausewitz said, most famously, politics is just war by other means.

So this is in fact on purpose, and as part of a wartime strategy

(let's call it a "cold" war, since there are few actual shots fired, and one side is made up mainly of socialists and Marxists).

"We can persecute Christians, they burned down Rome."

Hell, at least the bigots of previous ages could point to some violent act (legitimate or no) as justification. This modern witch hunt is about people expressing ideas in a lawful manner.

47 Progressives really do hate us more than they fear Islamic terrorism, crushing debt, the decline of the rule of law, or any other potential existential threats to our civilization. I have no doubt whatsoever that they would in the name of "tolerance" happily herd political opponents into camps in order to isolate them from the rest of society, given the right opportunity. That's why our 2nd Amendment rights must be preserved at all costs. The only thing keeping them in check is the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of any such forced event and the subsequent response.

But the whole "minority" thing is tricky. I never think of Cruz as Hispanic except when it's brought up, and then I say "oh yeah, I remember that". He looks white enough to me. He doesn't push grievance issues. He doesn't say his views are more important than others' on ethnic issues.

It started long, long before that. Consider how Reagan was vilified regularly on shows like SNL. If a writer proposed anything remotely like the treatment they regular gave Reagan but directed towards Clinton or Obama, he'd be looking for a new job very quickly.

Going back further, you'd think Nixon was the leader of the Manson Family from some of the vitriol directed towards him, even before Watergate. I was very young at the time but I had a sister twelves years older and to hear some of her friends talk about Nixon you'd think he was a mass murderer on a scale reserved in the 20th Century to Communist regimes.

Leftism has always been about feeling rather than thinking. Othering naturally is a behavior driven by emotion.

Cruz and Rubio clearly are overwhelmingly of western european descent.

If we did a blind DNA test they would be grouped in with the other white people.

This "one drop" bullshit really has to stop. It's unscientific and ignorant. Being 98% Spaniard and 2% Amerindian does not make somebody non-white.

88 The campaigns like this that the right conducted and was successful on were the Chic-Fil-A guy and the girl who flipped the bird at a memorial cemetery and before that, I think you have to go back to the Dixie Chicks.

in the first two situations, the media largely embargoed the story, and the only reason these Scalp Hunting campaigns were successful was that the companies seemed particularly pre-opposed to such conduct.

The Dixie Chicks Scalp was more of a "win," but that was only possible due to the superheated atmosphere post 9-11.

As a general matter, while there are those on the right who love them some scalps, they're just not able to get any kind of major "wins" in this ugly game due to the fact that 90% of the media and institutions that transmit mores nationally* are safely held in progressive hands.

* I'm trying to exclude churches. I'm not sure there are many churches that have a national reach.

111 >>>Othering is inherent to human nature. We crave it.

yes it is. But so is murder, frankly, but most of us have accepted the social conditioning and philosophical abhorrence of murder.

Real problems come when an evil human impulse is, rather than being restrained by reasoned ideology, instead amplified and encouraged by ideology.

Islamist terrorists would not be so gleeful to kill if they did not have an ideology that taught them that Murder Is Holy, for example.

You subtract that ideology from the equation and you have what exists in most places -- a lot of angry people, some of them mentally unbalanced, some of them violently predisposed, who occasionally kill, haphazardly, in an uncoordinated way.

Now the Dems have another disaster on their hands. Activists run amok, nihilists with flaming matches and jars of gasoline now threaten to crater the economy with 21st century witch trials. 163 Islamist terrorists would not be so gleeful to kill if they did not have an ideology that taught them that Murder Is Holy, for example.

You subtract that ideology from the equation and you have what exists in most places -- a lot of angry people, some of them mentally unbalanced, some of them violently predisposed, who occasionally kill, haphazardly, in an uncoordinated way.

Posted by: ace

I not entirely convinced of this. You're leaving out the evolutionary angle.

If a culture and mate-selection preferences favor men with violent natures, you can tend to get a lot of little rugrats who have inherited daddy's tendency toward violence, who then grow up to be admired and lusted after and thus produce more kids than passive nerds, and the process repeats over generations until you have a particularly violent society because it is populated by people with a genetic predisposition toward violence.

Anthropologists who study various tribes have noticed that in violent tribes, the top warriors are socially dominant and thus get all the chicks and have the most babies. And peaceful tribes tend to work the opposite way - for example, the guy who peacefully accumulates the most wealth will get all the chicks and have all the babies.

In the modern world there is so much globalization that cultural and sexual isolation no longer play as much of a factor, but pre-20th century it very likely did play a factor. How bug a factor is unknown, obviously. But I personally am willing to accept that, for example, the difference between Arab and Jewish culture has led to different population tendencies today: Arab warriors were socially valued, so warrior-lke babies dominated, whereas Jewish scholars/rabbis were valued, so scholarly babies dominated. Multiply that times ten thousand generations and you can evolve a genetically based warrior society vs. a genetically based intellectual society.

One may point possible counter-examples, such as the Vikings, who were "genetic warriors), but who somehow rather quickly in evolutionary terms evolved into peaceful Norwegians and Swedes.

I don't have all the answers. Just some of the questions.

I prefer to deal with things remotely possible.
You might as well just call for a revolution.

You do realize there is no political constituency for this, right? You might get a few %. That's it.

We barely got some minor tweaks of marginal rates passed under Bush. And they were undone when Obama got power.

It's silly to debate silly thing that have zero chance of happening.

And simply angrily repeating it doesn't make it more likely. At least acknowledge how extraordinarily unlikely your idea is.

You present "Repeal the Income Tax" like it's an idea we aren't pursuing because nobody thought of it. No, nobody is pursuing it because it's political suicide.

Our problem? Our outrage is fleeting. It comes and goes like the tide.

For instance, this from a year ago:

San Antonio Proposal Could Bar Christians From City Council

“No person shall be appointed to a position if the city council finds that such person has, prior to such proposed appointment, engaged in discrimination or demonstrated a bias, by word or deed, against any person, group or organization on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, age or disability,” the ordinance reads.

I don't think so. I think human nature is pretty uniform in its variability across races and cultures.

When you take any human males, give them not the faintest hope for meaningful work, teach them a fixed unyielding retrograde ideology, and massively suppress their natural sexual urges, those human males are going to be angry and violent and easily provoked to outrage.

The reason this is such a tough thing to do is that there are people who think they are conservatives who have never thought about the relationship between government and private citizens, so they believe government has an intrinsic right to know what you do for a living and how much you make.

Of course, the Fair Tax Plan address this, but we can't even get our own side to read and understand it, so it's stuck in neutral.

Most people are LIVs. Sadly, that includes our side too.

Posted by: Clutch Cargo at April 04, 2014 01:31 PM (pgQxn)

They seem to never rest and the reason they seem to never rest is because many on the Left make their living as political activists aka community organizers of one sort or another. I seem to recall Henry Waxman, of all people, complaining about 'the professional Left' a few years ago, committed ideologues holding university tenure and postions at not-for-profits and the like. They even hire part-time seasonal workers in much the same way the agricultural industry does, and what they harvest are votes. During election years, we joked about the people Axelrod paid to astroturf right-of-center news sites and blogs, but who beat whom in those elections?

The concept is alien to us on the right. We lead busy lives andhold real jobs and spend time with our families. Politics is an interest among many other interests. Not them, though. The personal is political, all-consuming. It's who they are, how they define themselves. Their commitment is total. Utopia is that light in the distance, the single focal point upon which everything is focused.

The way to beat a full-court press is to stay calm, keep mistakes to a minimum, exploit to the utmost the errors they're bound to make, and thenretake the initiative. The big error GOP strategists make is claiming this issue or that piece of legislation isn't the hill to die on (to use another metaphor). When confronted by such tactics, every hill is the hill to die on. Concede no ground. Give them nothing, ever.

234 You aren't really Othered until you lose something important to you. Or forced into silence out of fear of losing those things.

If you are hated by a minority that has no power to hurt you in your personal or professional life ... the effect is minimal.

You can be a gigantic left-wing uber-douche, proud and open, and be welcome on America's finest universities, NYC's swankiest parties, and Hollywood's premier red carpets.

Sure, if you are a giant leftist cock-weasel you won't be welcome at Liberty U or get invites at Heritage and Limbaugh might make a few jokes at your expense. And you'll have anonymous people on the internet say mean things.

But life is still about as awesome as it gets. Power, wealth, women. Life is good as a caustic, Leftist uber-douche in America.

Meanwhile Beck had to leave NYC cause he'd get harassed on the street, booed in public, and have trash thrown at him.

I remember Beck telling a story once where he tried to just watch some theater in the park with his wife and daughter in NYC -- he was forced to leave being pelted with garbage.

Beck is a theater geek. He wanted to be Orson Welles on Broadway. But nobody in Broadway would ever work with Beck.

Beck is rich and get put on his theater shows in suburban Dallas. He can even rent out Dallas Cowboys stadium. But he can't be where he grew up dreaming of being. In New York City, under the lights of Broadway.

247 The difference is that otherizing is INTRINSIC to Progressivism. It's a feature, not a bug.

The difference, I think, and I hope I’m not just internalizing othering, is that even if there were no Ace of Spades or right-wing hate machine “othering” Barack Obama, I’d still be looking at his actions and thinking, this guy is bad news. The only addition I’d have is, why doesn’t anybody else see it?

You look at the othering of Ted Cruz, or Sarah Palin, and I really don’t think the left would care one bit about them if it weren’t for the hate machine. Palin especially—she really seems to have been a moderate in governing. I can’t but think that, without the hate machine, the left would have looked at actions such as recommending that the state give up its bridge money in favor of another state that needed it more as “good politics”.

308 You see how effective othering can be even on right leaning blogs. When is the last time you heard someone say something positive about Palin without attaching some sort of disclaimer to it as to how they don't agree with her on everything but....?

When the right abandoned Palin the press and the left (as if there is a difference) was emboldened. Now you see the Republican establishment doing the same thing with the Tea Party. How sick is a society when the only rational, fiscally sane political movement in the entire country is the one which must be demonized by anyone holding power? It pretty much shows you that all the politicians are interested in is looting the corpse of what was once a great nation.

327 "22 When exactly did this start? It seems to me it was right after 9/11 that the left collectively snapped."

The attitudes began showing themselves in public then, but this toxic "Manichean" style of politics has been germinating for many decades. The only difference is that these "othering" attitudes used to be expressed circumspectly behind closed doors in university seminars. Now they are broadcast publicly from mainstream news outlets and preached openly in classroom. These attitudes have been a political force in Europe since the French Revolution, and they have bedeviled Europe for over two centuries. In the 20th century we (the US) were exceptional in that we fought the Revolution overseas, but not at home. Now, however, the revolutionary virus has infected America.

I see more and more that we will undergo the same testing that bedeviled 20th century Europe. The rising tide of Manichean politics will not recede on its own. I don't know what form the conflict will take; if America is truly exceptional, it will play out differently here than it did in Europe (and Asia, Africa, et al).

Lately I've been reminded of a conversation that Whittaker Chambers had with a Russian General who escaped Stalin's purges. The general told him that it is not enough to be "conservative" in the modern conflict; you must be counter-revolutionary. Only that stance can counter the Revolution, and I mean Revolution with a capital 'R.' It's here, and I don't see what good it does us to deny it any longer. What we do about this massive political fact is of course up for debate.

344 An unjust society, such as the fellow travelers on the Left, will fight and devour each other because they are inflamed by their passions. The only way to stop this is to unite them against a common enemy. This is the idea of the scapegoat, and has been playing out in history since time immemorial.

There is no reasoning with the Left, because they have rejected reason. All that remains is their unbridled passions, and no matter how much they rage, it will never be "enough." There is no off-button to this other than the Scottish Enlightenment (and you might argue, Judeo-Christianity) as formerly embodied by Western Civilization. It might seem quaint, but there was a time, very recently even, when it was widely understood that those outside the west were barbarians. This is still true, although those willing to state such are demonized now.

For a brief time, we were able to hold back the night of human depravity. The barbarians have always been there, though, and have finally figured out how to take down the gates. It took them about 100 years, but this was the plan all along. It's going to get ugly (much more than now) really soon.

Posted by: Chestertonrocks at April 04, 2014 03:36 PM (SlOex)

345 The Democrats also look down upon the rest of America. They have contempt for everybody. It's not just reserved for people of good standing who manage to earn a high profile, like Ted Cruz or Rush Limbaugh.

346 "It makes sense to dehumanize one's enemy in some contexts -- War, of
course, most famously. And for the two to three hours of a sporting
match. Football players, for example, fill their heads with notions of
how their opponents have demeaned them and so on to get some good
warrior game faces on."

Not applicable to baseball, IMO. The other day the Houston Astros honored the Yankees' Derek Jeter in a pregame ceremony (he's retiring this year), and when he came to the plate later the entire team gave him a standing O. It's not uncommon to see players of opposing teams engaging in friendly banter while on base. Different world, I guess.
