Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | "The Costs of Repeal"Well, isn't this interesting. Just in the last hour or so, both the official Barack Obama and Organizing for America Twitter accounts have shifted their messaging from touting the benefits and success stories of Obamacare (few as they may be), to scare-whoring the costs of repealing the law. Moving forward, the President and Democrats in Congress are committed to improving the health care law and fixing it when the need arises. Every day more uninsured Americans are signing up for plans as the website gets faster and more people with insurance are benefiting from the law.I'm not sure if they're seeing disastrous internal polling or if this is a shot at the increasingly-weak knees of several red state Democrat Senators up for reelection next year, but either way, this is not exactly a position of strength. Repealing our signature law that is creating nationwide disruptions and confusion will likely cause more disruptions and confusion! Sure, run with that. Also, the website will be faster. Huzzah. If you're explaining, you're losing, as they say. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I don’t—there are already plans in operation, that were being sold no more than a few weeks ago, that are less expensive and provide more useful services than the exchanges. The costs on the exchanges and the lack of choice are insane. Compared to that, just about any reform following repeal will be better (Republicans: this is not meant as a challenge). It all comes down to the same question, over and over. You knew this thing was horribly flawed from the beginning and those flaws were multiplied by the sheer bulk and over-reach of the legislation. If you honestly thought this was going to benefit people, rather than forcing them into a system that gives you greater control over them, why didn't you take an open approach to offering small easily examined bits of legislation for passage? Why was it necessary to have it be all or nothing?
If they cannot honestly answer these questions, then the cost of repeal cannot be higher than the cost of keeping the damn thing. Depending on your interpretation, restoring the nation to the intent of the Constitution would be quite expensive, too. But with $17 trillion and counting of debt what we have is already defining the upper limits of 'expensive.' Posted by: Epobirs at December 19, 2013 03:23 PM (bPxS6) 150

- Premium increases of 30% to over 200% for individuals and families - Deductible increases of 80%- over 200% for everyone - Up to 1% of annual income in penalties - Loss of access to your preferred doctors and hospitals - Loss of access to specialists - Compounded costs for services that people don't need/ can't use passed on to everyone (more than 50% of the population will NEVER get a mammogram, drug treatment, etc.) - Birth control used to cost as little as $9/ month without insurance. Now "free" birth control costs as much as $350 per month or more in premiums plus out-of-pocket deductibles of up to $5000 or more for associated doctor's visits and follow ups. - So far, more than 5 million Americans who had insurance policies that they like and were affordable to them have lost coverage. --- Fixed. Much like 2010, the issue isn't just the 2014 races in general as much as what it means for the party as a going concern. 2010 screwed them big time because it threw a ton of state legislatures and Governor's mansions to the Republicans, meaning that redistricting was done by Republican-controlled entities. 2014 would probably help wipe out a generation of Dem politicians, which they sorely need considering that the Dem "leadership" tends to be a bunch of fucking zombies who are 70 or older and have been in DC since the 60s. My wife and I had to help my father-in-law sign up for coverage last night. The website was actually working.
I spent about two hours comparing plans. Here are my thoughts based on my experience. People who qualify for significant subsidies are going to be totally hooked on Obamacare. Everybody else is screwed. My father-in-law qualified for a $544.00 a month subsidy (divorced, small income, single). He is choosing between an Aetna or Blue Cross plan that will cost him between $0 to $100 a month out of pocket. He can get a pretty good plan with a $3,500 deductible for about $45 a month. Guys like my father-in-law will benefit greatly from Obamacare. People in the middle to upper-middle class will be totally screwed because they will need to pay far more in order to make selling insurance to poor people profitable. Posted by: SH at December 19, 2013 03:45 PM (F1lOF) We can never win by relying on the ineptitude of our opponents. We can exploit their ineptitude (and other glaring weaknesses)when the opportunity presents itself, but even that alone won't do the trick. To win, we need to push our positives. Either our ideas are better than theirs, or they're not. We need that conviction or we'll always, invariably, inevitably lose. Besides, they have the media. Subaru has solid lifters. Worth ten horse or so, and "allows" you to learn how to do something important to your engine. Not that it's much of an issue with modern finicky motors, but it also means the valves won't stick when the oil starts to leave a sludge residue.
And, Hill-Holder clutch. Also stolen from Studebaker. Almost all "modern" engines have a mandatory cam belt replacement. I hate it, but you can't really blame Subaru for that. The panel looks at the patient, determines the cancer is too far along, the cost far too high, and the patient not worth the expense. Their solution: Let the cancer take its course and allow the patient to die. Good point. A $3500 deductible ain't great, but it is what it is in today's world. He was laid off from his job at age 62, so he had to "retire" three years early.
When I say it's pretty good, I compare that only to what he would have had to spend in the private market without subsidies. He would have been a tough guy to insure. He's had some health problems (through no fault of his own - he keeps himself in good shape). My personal opinion is that Obamacare is simply a tax on the middle / upper middle class, collected by the government and redistributed to insurance companies in order to make it profitable for them to insure the poor. It takes public money and hands it over directly to private corporations. That's why Republicans came up with it. Almost all political activity by each major party can be explained by the following motivations: 1. Democrats always seek to expand the power and scope of the governmental bureaucracy. 2. Republicans always seek to transfer public money to big business and to give big business more sway in making public policy. Posted by: stickety at December 19, 2013 06:57 PM (+Vm+w) 389
