Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Surprise: CTU Head Karen Lewis Rallied the Occupy Crowds"For the children." Don't forget this. It's for the children. I'm also re-posting this stuff from the previous post, because I added it late. What Are They Striking Over? Not pay. They're specifically striking in opposition to 1, strict evaluations of their performance and 2, shockingly, their demand that bad teachers, previously laid off for poor performance, be rehired. Let me note this very obvious but underappreciated fact: The most loyal troopers for any union are the worst performing at their actual jobs. And the union, in return, is most loyal to them. Think about it: People who are doing their jobs well do not need the union as much, if at all. They might be pro-union, but at the end of the day, people who are good at their jobs know two things: 1. It is unlikely they will be fired or laid off. Well, in a normal economy it's unlikely. Even in this economy, it's less likely. 2. Even if they were, for some reason, fired or laid off, they would have a reasonable expectation of finding new employment after a short time of unemployment. Again, with the caveat: In a normal economy. So, who really, really needs the union to fight like hell for bad workers? The bad workers do, of course. And who then provides the unions with their most fervent shock troops? The bad workers-- because they are under small illusion about their employability without a union fighting to keep them in their jobs, despite their incompetence. This is why the unions are so against evaluations and performance review -- while there are good teachers in the union, the good teachers are not the real clients of the union. The real clients of the union are the bad teachers. Consider performance-based pay. Now, in any group, one third of the people will get more money. One third will neither get less nor get more. One third will, in a regime in which pay is based on performance, get less. So, in any union, there should not really be a firm opinion on merit-based pay. There is no overwhelming majority against it, nor for it. It breaks pretty evenly into pro/neutral/anti. And yet the teachers unions are always stridently against merit-based pay. Why? Because their real clients are the bottom-feeders, the most marginal of workers. The higher-performers know they really don't need the union -- and the union knows they know that. Their dedicated shock troops, their most fervent street-beaters, are those who know that without a union, they wouldn't have a job, period. I look at these videos of angry, spit-foaming chanters in the street and I don't hear their stupid rhymes. I hear one thing: I'm hanging by a thread and I know it.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

That assumes the performance being graded on a curve (to make up for the non-normal distribution, compared to society at large, of the below-par workers in a shitty field). Education majors are the bottom of the barrel. Most of them are sub-par and most of them are incompetent and unable to carry out their basic tasks, which are fairly simple and straightforward. It's not totally their fault. Most are too dumb to be able to perform their jobs well. Teacher's unions are strong because most teachers are idiots. Lowest mean scores of any department. LOWEST. And yet we allow these near-retards to make decisions on what standard curricula should be? WTFFF? Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at September 11, 2012 04:18 PM (X3lox) 31

Correct response from Rahm (I know he won't give it):
"The Chicago Teachers' Union is striking over the following things: a mere 16% raise over 4 years. Objective evaluation standards which will help ensure that your children are receiving the best possible education. The fact that Chicago refuses to re-hire teachers already found, even under the current lax standards, to be poor performers. So I have negotiated with the private schools and charter schools within the city. It will be tight, but your children will at least receive some amount of instruction from these fine institutions until the current dispute is resolved. The money that would be going to pay the teachers over this period will be diverted to defray the costs of the charter schools and private schools." He may have thought that the "rehire the already fired teachers" was as much a throw-away as the 24% increase demand, and thought that he could at least get continued negotiation by giving the teachers a pass on the first year's eval. I don't think there's any disagreement that this looks bad for Rahm. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at September 11, 2012 04:30 PM (8y9MW) 106

I'll believe it's For The Children when public school teachers are willing to work for the same pay and benefits that my private, Christian school teachers made, or, well, didn't make is more accurate. >>I still think a lot of this is orchestrated theater. To achieve what, I don't know now, but I expect we'll find out.
Possibilities: 1. The Rush Theory. This was organized with the blessing of the unions, Rahm, and the White House. They've secretly already reached a deal. Obama gets to come in and with a lot of theater brokers a deal to save the children. 2. A "Sister Soulja" moment. Obama told Rahm to play hardball. Obama will come out against "unreasonable" union demands, echoing his convention speech that we're all going to have to give up a little. Maybe make a play for independents, knowing that he'll be sticking his finger only in the eyes of people who'll vote for him anyway. 3. It's a swing state theory. He'll side with the unions, knowing it's unpopular with the public at large. While the union antics in Wisconsin and New Jersey hurt the unions, they didn't in Ohio, a must-have state. Maybe he figures standing up for the CTU will help him in Ohio. 4. Random chaos theory. This was not planned or orchestrated. This is toxic for Obama. He wants nothing to do with it. I'm going with #4. Posted by: angler at September 11, 2012 04:36 PM (SwjAj) 137

It is September 11. The contrast of these people against that backdrop is horrifying in a whole different way. Most people have taken pay cuts up the wazoo. A lot of people were fired, some are underemployed to just put food on the table.
A new round of layoffs is coming to a defense contractor near you. And these people have the audacity to hope that they are better than every other American citizen? The optic, the narrative is a horrible failure. How long will America's teachers put up with this? I ask this because right now the Chicago teachers are reflecting on every single teacher in this county. Sometimes I think she is a ruse that has gone too far. Years ago, a couple kids got together inside a costume, and wanted to see how far they could go to get the teachers to do all sorts of insane crazy shit. As the years have progressed, not only have the kids grown, but the number of kids who found out about the ruse and "wanted in" on the joke have also grown. So there's probably hiding underneath this massive Karen Lewis costume two high school juniors, and a handfull of various other 4th - 7th graders, all romping around, snickering, as they put on this massive charade. There is one point that the teachers have about evaluations, and it's that if you're in a gangbanger ghetto school where half your students barely even come to class, let alone do the minimal work required, then student performance will be poor regardless of teacher effort.
In other words, how is it just to evaluate a teacher's competence on the basis of student achievement, when a significant percentage of your students don't care to learn? That said, there's a large conversation that needs to be had about the home/family culture of schools that contain significant numbers of those students. But no one will touch that with a 1,000-ft pole due for fear of being called racist or worse. So the status quo continues unabated... It would be funny if Rush was right. If this strike started off as some scam so Oblahblah could ride in on his white ass (Joe Biden) and save the day. All the top people are involved in the plan (Karen, Rahm, Barry, Arne, and Val), but the underlings don't have a clue. So when Karen tells the teachers that they are going to settle (after getting the high sign from King Choom), and the rank and file Unionistas who have drank the Kook-aid want to continue with the strike (because they really think this strike is about them), hilarity will ensue. I don't know if that will happen, but a girl can dream. I love watching blue on blue violence. I'm sick that way. And yeah, those kids are screwed anyways. 132 "Learning" happens when cultivated at home. Regardless of income, students who study diligently at home do learn and achieve academic excellence as well as self respect with the personalized work ethic. Even if the parents aren't involved except to enforce home study in the student's private schedule. My parents did not help us with homework until high school freshman year when my dad helped us to "get" Algebra.
Given what public educator UNIONS have done to public education curriculum and presentational manner this past half century, they could keep the children in school 9 hrs. a day, 6 days a week, year round without summer off. The kids would NOT learn very effectively unless they practice/rehearse at home those academic lessons taught at school, and the parents be held responsible for their children's diligence. They're what Rand called "second-handers." If the liberal wants something to happen, they lobby the government to force other people to pay for, or do, stuff. If a conservative wants something to happen, they do it themselves. If it's providing something people with something theyactually want, they will pay for it, and that translates to "starting a company." Posted by: Optimizer at September 11, 2012 05:11 PM (As94z) 253

My city's school system has several schools ranked as in decline(ie failing)- and the number is growing. The solution? Allow the teachers in the declining schools to transfer to those schools which are not rated as poor; then hire first year teachers and stick the lambs into the roughest inner-city schools (rated as declining)and of course, fail to do the logical thing by not seeking out experienced and successful teachers, and recruiting them to your city. Take the Principals of failing schools and promote them to the Central Office with a nice raise. Makes sense to me!

WTFFF? To be a teacher you are not an education major. K-6 is Liberal Arts. 7-12 the field you teach. THEN you get into the education program and effectively get a Masters in Education (I had to take 3 more classes for the Masters). Also, to get into the Credential Program you have to have above a 3.0. Not all of us teachers are idiots. I was hardly the lowest in my fields GPA. I would like to see where you are getting your data from. I think Ace hit the nail on the head Just an FYI, teaching is not as easy as some seem to think it is. When I first started teaching we got a new teacher that used to work for Northrop as an aeronautics engineer. He became a teacher because he thought it would be easier than what he was doing, less stress etc. His words. He lasted a 4 months. Went back to Northrop. According to him teaching was harder than his job at Northrop. Posted by: Thorisin at September 11, 2012 05:23 PM (xMq47) 261

The data (for mean GRE scores, say) is sitting on the ETS website for anyone to see. I first ran into the figures when I got my own GRE scores back and saw the means for all grads on the back. That was many, many years ago. I was absolutely astonished at how shitty the education scores were. Lower math scores than English grads. Those rankings have not changed over the years. The education departments are the biggest jokes at every university - and that's saying something seeing all the joke departments that universities like to have around. If you don't believe me go check out the scores yourself at ETS. Or look on the back of your own GRE results. Not all teachers are awful, but most are and, on average, they suck donkey shit and don't deserve even half the pay they get. Not even close. Further, they fuck up kids with their own stupidity. We don't have the GRE in California. It's the CBEST and CSET. Funny thing is my degree is in computers (which is a math heave degree) but I did poorly in the math section of the CBEST. The problem was I was used to using calculators for the basic math functions so it wasn't the best score. Simple fact is that some are bad teachers but to say most given the number of teachers out there I would say is something of an exaggeration. Not all of us are left wing loons. I agree. A former Dupont Chemist left the teaching field after 2 years. Despite his background and high intelligence, he lacked the ability to teach his area of expertise and manage his classroom. Although earning a Masters in the academic field has become more frequent in many secondary schools, a strong academic background does not guarantee success in teaching, even when working with the gifted. Another point to consider is that not everyone lands a position in a strong college prep school. Many teachers struggle with classes full of inner-city students prone towards major behavioral disorders, no self-control, often violent, and no positive parental influence to provide reinforcement at home. Some Principals, practicing CYA with their communities enforce a "pass everyone" policy (an unwritten rule) on their faculty, and threaten teachers who refuse to cooperate. For these same reasons some administrators fail to back faculty attempting to introduce accountability into their classrooms. In all, it is a big shock for people who show up expecting to have short working hours and long summers goofing off, with little stress. Any top-rated teacher spends at least 12-14 hours a day on their classes. It does not end when their students leave the classroom. Many of them are on the road with academic- related teams on the weekends and after school. The unions have done nothing to correct the obstacles towards improving classrooms. They collect money to donate to left -wing causes, while preventing school systems from recruiting top-ranked teachers, by enforcing the seniority hiring rule. As a result ,the only contribution the unions have enforced is the entrenchment of dead wood faculty who insist that the length of their teaching existence, should justify why they should be given perks. the unions do nothing to promote teachers who produce high test scores and student academic awards. Instead, they often appear to ignore these producers. Posted by: Ragnell at September 11, 2012 06:16 PM (iqQbh) Posted by: Thorisin at September 11, 2012 06:17 PM (xMq47) 279

True. I took the GRE for graduate studies in History. There is no comparison between the scores required for acceptance into my university's graduate History program and that of a M.ED. Rather than focusing on high academic skills and knowledge, I've observed that a masters in Education demands strong time management skills. Most graduate programs provide classes during the day, while students conduct research at night. Instead, an M.ed program is set up around teachers required to work during the day, coach and grade papers for several hours. Afterwards they must organize their time to attend classes at night, and research, organize and implement all those action plans to improve their schools. It is a matter of organization, but not necessarily high academic ability. Frankly, I think the requirement to obtain a Masters to continue teaching should be altered to the field taught instead of Education. Too many secondary school teachers lack a strong background in their subject area. I doubt the unions would agree. Posted by: Ragnell at September 11, 2012 06:46 PM (iqQbh) 280
278 It depends on your program. Many states DO require applicants for a M.ED program to take the GRE. However, they don't require the higher level scores found in most graduate programs. Yet, those programs are not dealing with students working the hours of teachers.
Another thing to keep in mind is the comparison of salaries vs. hours required of a university or college professor. Yes, professors have to produce research to survive. However, once they obtain tenure, their teaching/time requirements don't approach the demands of elementary/secondary level teachers. So those higher GRE requirements, can give students university jobs that pay more with less stress and lower working hours. Posted by: Ragnell at September 11, 2012 06:58 PM (iqQbh) 281

"How many children has Karen Lewis consumed in her lifetime? Yeesh!" Sometimes I think she is a ruse that has gone too far. Years ago, a couple kids got together inside a costume, and wanted to see how far they could go to get the teachers to do all sorts of insane crazy shit. So there's probably hiding underneath this massive Karen Lewis costume two high school juniors, and a handfull of various other 4th - 7th graders, all romping around, snickering, as they put on this massive charade. They shut down streets in the loop again. Hindering people from getting home. There is no difference between the teachers union and the Occuturds.

"The most loyal troopers for any union are the worst performing at their actual jobs."
That was my experience. The ones who were drunk at the desks or asleep or simply had a big chip on their shoulder that said fuck you, if you think you can come in here to my cubicle and ask me to do fucking anything. Also, some were mentally ill. And they would tell me to quit working so fast or I would make them look bad! I said to the head guy once how shocked I was at this and he said, look, this is the employer of last resort. These people would be on welfare if they didn't have this job. At least they have to do something. Posted by: pj at September 11, 2012 08:14 PM (DQHjw) 286
If I bought her a HoneyBaked Ham for Thanksgiving, would she agreed to stop the strike?
