Ryan's Grand Slam
A speech which actually gets better with a fresh reading. There were gems I just plain missed the first time around.
Like I missed the shout-out to "Julia," Obama's Entitlement Gal, in this passage:College graduates should not have to live out their 20s in their childhood bedrooms, staring up at fading Obama posters and wondering when they can move out and get going with life. Everyone who feels stuck in the Obama economy is right to focus on the here and now. And I hope you understand this too, if you’re feeling left out or passed by: You have not failed, your leaders have failed you. None of us have to settle for the best this administration offers – a dull, adventureless journey from one entitlement to the next, a government-planned life, a country where everything is free but us. Listen to the way we’re spoken to already, as if everyone is stuck in some class or station in life, victims of circumstances beyond our control, with government there to help us cope with our fate. It’s the exact opposite of everything I learned growing up in Wisconsin, or at college in Ohio. When I was waiting tables, washing dishes, or mowing lawns for money, I never thought of myself as stuck in some station in life. I was on my own path, my own journey, an American journey where I could think for myself, decide for myself, define happiness for myself. That’s what we do in this country. That’s the American Dream. That’s freedom, and I’ll take it any day over the supervision and sanctimony of the central planners.Highlights (though it was all highlights) here, plus video. It's pure dynamite. I called it "devastating;" minutes later Brit Hume used the same word (as well as a "lethal shot" at the Obama reelection campaign). I know I'll catch hell for this, but the election is over. This week Romney/Ryan will move ahead in the polls and they will not relinquish that lead, save for the occasional outlier. Polls will tighten and widen; but from this moment forward, the preference cascade begins. In a way, Ryan shouldn't be over-praised because he had so damn much material to work with. But he worked with that abundance of riches masterfully. Watch him gracefully segue from the stimulus to ObamaCare, and from ObamaCare to Medicare. He's talking about discreet economic policies, but he knits them together so you barely even realize he's shifted topics. His poise was enormous. He delivered a Mortal Kombat fatality on the Obama presidency and he did it with "aw, shucks, ma'am" earnestness and goodwill. He seemed like such a nice boy as he spoke, and each and every word he said was deadly. It doesn't matter what Romney says tomorrow. I suppose we should all hope, of course, for the Speech of His Life. Perhaps he'll deliver; one thing about Romney is that he is intensely competitive. But unless he says something remarkably stupid -- something I'm pretty sure he won't -- the media coverage on him will be "safe and solid as usual, but nothing like the power of Paul Ryan's address." Which is just fine, because Ryan eviscerated the Obama Presidency tonight. Romney doesn't need to do bonus damage to it. It's done. Ann Romney's speech on Tuesday night was one for the political record books-- the best speech ever given by a would-be First Lady. And the most effective in achieving core strategic goals (humanizing Mitt, reassuring women, reassuring voters generally that her husband was up the job). And even her speech -- which was tremendous -- was not up to Ryan's. Romney can't top Ryan's speech because it can't be topped. So his mission will be to simply close the deal, and as Romney has been the architect of this deal, I don't think he'll blow the final pitch. It might be a little unspectacular, but it will provide, for those millions of Americans who have softly decided that the president should be replaced, but are still unsure of the alternative, the reassurance necessary for the full change of mind to support Romney. Someone on Twitter noted something I'd said before: For millions of Americans, non-newsjunkies, non-conservatives, this convention will have been among the very first sustained criticisms of the Obama presidency they've ever seen. Think about what they usually see -- a few snippets on the news, almost entirely protective of the Naked Emperor. I have to imagine their brains are buzzing after Ryan's speech. He really laid Obama open. I believe speculation stuff about replacing Biden is going to hit a fever pitch this weekend. I'm not saying it'll happen... though it might. I'm saying that Ryan's speech shook them, and you're going to see some panic. Here's another prediction: I think Ryan's appeal to young voters... is going to work. Not taking a lead, maybe, but turning it into a 46-52 type proposition. They thought Ryan would be bad. They were wrong. He was worse than they imagined, and then some.
Another Vote For "Devastating:" Some called it "awe-inspiring."
Ryan’s 36-minute address did everything he needed to do: offer a devastating indictment of President Obama’s economic record, with a few memorable barbs about the president’s legendary self-importance; offer enough personal background so that viewers feel they know a little about Ryan; and most of all, convince voters that he and Mitt Romney will devote all their energy to jobs, the economy, and debt. Ryan got it all done.

The thing that bothers me about Romney is he is not a deep conservative thinker. He is no Reagan or Thatcher, hasn't thought through his reflex conservatism thoroughly, or, if he has, hasn't figured out how to express it succinctly. He shows no sign of having read Aristotle or Locke or Burke or Madison or of having any interest in tradional conservative ideas.

Exactly. It was the more in sorrow than anger thing that made it all that much worse. He's so nice and kind and earnest and wow that blade was sharp when he slipped it between the ribs.
To beat my hobby horse to death, I found the generational comments interesting, particularly when tied into the there's not much time comment and the comments to the 20somethings. Ryan is Gen X and Gen X has been told all its life that SS and Medicare will bankrupt us and that something must be done. Now we have the first Gen X VP candidate (brb palm flashing) and he's treating the electorate like adults and directly confronting all the issues that have been kicked down the road and that Gen X knows that its on the hook to pay. Tie that into working with Romney to address the problems together and it's a very powerful message. It's not let's all blame each other, it's let's all work together and fix this things because America Fuck Yeah! (I may be paraphrasing a little)

Mitt Romney, it is clear to me, is very personally Socially Conservative. Growing up in Michigan, and then governing in Massachusetts, he almost certainly learned a lesson a lot of social conservatives need to learn- there are fights for today, and fights for tomorrow. For the foreseeable future, the fight for today will be one of Fiscal conservatism. And I think that Mitt Romney is as good as anyone on that fight.
Do I wish he seemed like that was rooted more deeply into an individualistic, Federalist approach to the question? Certainly. Do I think he has autocratic tendencies? Absolutely.
But I have absolutely no reservations that he is Conservative at heart, even if he believes his calling is one of Fiscal Conservatism on policy, and Social Conservatism only in personal preference.
I'll take that any day over Huckabee's sanctimonious preening.

After Ryan's address, local talk show host was inundated by crazy panicked donks. The main themes: BOOSH's fault...Condi was a token Negro. One guy offered the original idea that Ryan might be as good a speaker as preazy, but teh won is a better orator than Romney.
That's all they got.Surprised that not one brought up the war on wimmenz. I guess that doesn't play well even with the koolaid crowd.
I like the way Ryan's speech was framed between the assertion of We Can Do This, right at the start, and then repeating the same confidentreassurance at the end. He gave the American people inspiration, hope and a true way forward, This is what the country so desperately needs today.

Condi...oh man, that was right up there with Ryan's and may have even topped his, primarily because we all know what she has gone through as National Sec Adv, and Sec of State (let alone in her own life)....most patriotic and inspired I have felt. Really didn't expect to be moved by anyone at this convention.

Young people can look at him, and then look at the senile old fart Joe Biden, and say, "My God, is EVERYONE in the democratic party an old man?" And the answer is YES. Even the women are senile old men. They're relics of the 60s, Boomers who are dying off and being replaced by insane ultra-leftist whackjobs. A lot of young people respond to that ultraleftist crap, but as they get a little older they start to realize,"Hey, I kind of want a job that doesn't involve chaining myself to a redwood."
I think you're REALLY going to see a swing of the youth vote in coming years. Maybe not tremendously so this election, but very much so as time moves forward. And this year is when it's going to start.

My father, who lives in the Lehigh Valley area, called me yesterday around noon. He started with " Did you watch the speeches last night?".
I, of course responded " went to bed early, got all the info I needed from Ace Of Spades this morning"

After the Romney picked Ryan, some people questioned whether Paul Ryan fierceness. They said he would not make a very good attack dog, that he was too wonkish, too "Huck Finn". I remember saying at the time that if you wanted someone to come out shrieking and stomping and acting aggressively angry, then no, Paul was not going to do that. I said he will come at them with facts, with good humor and with the courage of his convictions, and that would win the day. I think we've seen that to be the case.

A good executive knows how to delegate things intelligently to the really fucking smart people and then uses their advice for the benefit of the country. Putting together a first rate cabinet and turning them loose is what is needed and I'm 100% confident that Romney will do that.

Very nice wrap up, ace, and I concur. I would only add that what you are seeing is Romney's vision both of the message and how to govern. As much as we have been told that Romney is overly cautious, which is patently absurd on it's face, it was Romney who made the bold choice of Ryan.
Until a week before the choice was made we were told by all of the political geniuses that Romney would make the safe choice and go with Pawlenty or Portman. Instead, he picked the guy who is the intellectual and spiritual keeper of the flame of the Jack Kemp flame. It was Jack Kemp's economic policy that Reagan adopted and made his own and now Romney has picked up that torch and made it his as well. To say he doesn't understand conservative economic thought is to misunderstand history. It's clear that Ryan get's this as he has been in Romney's corner since practically the start of this race and would never have so enthusiastically signed up for this job had he not believed that Romney was a true believer.
Ryan also represents Romney's governing policy which is rooted in his business background. Confident, successful executives surround themselves with the best talent, people who share their goals and vision, and give them the brief to accomplish parts of that vision. Romney is the CEO and Ryan is the COO.

He chose the most articulate and accomplished person he could find who shared his beliefs. When Ryan hit the faded Obama posters line, the comments exploded. He touched a nerve like nobody has since Reagan turned the age meme against his detractors.

Having voted for Reagan and both Bushes, I was looking forward to hearing from another true conservative such as Ryan. He certainly spoke with great passion. But my wife kept shaking her head during the speech and when it was over I asked her why.
Now, my wife is a conservative too. She worked her way through college and likes to do things by herself. But she said she took out government loans and was wondering whether they were implying she was a welfare parasite. As an African-American she is very sensitive to dog whistles and was especially disappointed that everyone who spoke at the convention was white, especially with so many black folk drowning in New Orleans due to hurricane Isaac.
Then when we got to the bedroom she asked if I would like the government in there inspecting her ovaries to make sure a rapist's baby was safe. She has gay friends and asked whether the police should be in their bedrooms too. Then our dog walked in and she began crying about how the Koch brothers tied Seamus to the top of a car using non-union rope made of tied-together magic Mormon underwear.

I know this is off topic but I was a prisoner at McDonalds last night for dinner with my family. The TV had MSNBC on and I know we talk about bias there, but I was appalled at the cute jokes they were making about the Paul Ryan faces. The sheer stupidity that was on display was stunning.

One thing disappointed me. I caught a couple of clips of his speech, but he was fully-clothed. I really think a Mr. Olympia style pose-off would have been the clincher. I even shipped the RNC a case of oil, but the storm must have slowed the delivery down.

Condi's speech was awesome, and I think it did more to influence women voters than Ann Romney's speech, which was a more than adequate effort for a political wife but shouldn't be overestimated. It appealed to conservative men who liked a woman talking about how great her husband is, but it did little to offer a vision for the future to independent women voters struggling to balance career and family life. By contrast, Rice's line about K-12 education resonated with the women in the audience, partly because you expected her to speak only about foreign policy. "When I can look at your zip code and I can tell whether you're going to get a good education, can I honestly say it does not matter where you came from, it matters where you are going?" It was a strong counterpoint to the broader theme of America's place in the world to talk about domestic policy, education and innovation. For the record, I still think Rice would have been a disaster on the ticket. But I can see why there was so much buzz about her. That was what I would call an effective speech.

First off a lot of people who will vote in November didn't see all or part of the speech. They already were asleep.

Now a lot of seniors in places like Florida, Ohio and Virginia will be reading about the speech today in their left-wing newspapers, as opposed to having seen it live for themselves.
The reference to polling data is unbelievably naive. Right after the Dem convention the media polls will show Obama in the lead, come hell or high water. Come on, clue in. If they have to oversample Democrats by 10+ points they'll do so.
Most significantly the blog post here demographically is naive and clueless. Ryan literally could have morphed into the second coming on live TV last night, but Obama still will receive at least 95% of the black vote, at least 65% of the Latino vote, plus overwhelming majorities from public sector union members, college and grad students, and various other victim and identity groups.
Romney has a good chance to win this election. But that's the whole point; it's a chance, not a guarantee. It will take a herculean effort to remove Obama from office. Conservatives need to grow up. Then to get off their arses and actually to vote, not to send messages nor to start measuring the drapes in the Oval Office.

I actually disagree. The underpinning value in Smith's work, especially Wealth of Nations, is the concept of Private Property. As long as you hold dearly to that idea, Liberty will never fully die. It may take body blows; it may become very weak, but it will never die.

Ryan is a freakishly awesome political beast right now. I think he's too savvy to get Palin-ized (not that I'm knocking Sarah). And I agree that Romney is going to beat the SCOAMF, and it won't be close enough to become another 2000 rerun.
So I'm looking down the road: Is it conceivable that Romney decides to be a one-term President? Say he gets the Nation's house in order, enacts a fair amount of the Conservative agenda, and is hailed for being the turn-around artist that he promised he would be. Would he want to spend another 4 years at that? Or is it possible he would pass the baton to Ryan? If Ryan plays key roles in the execution of this turn-around, I could see that happening. And I think it would set a welcome precedent.

Let's just say I'm not going to go all in at a Vegas casino on Romney/Ryan winning it all, but I'm very optimistic. Better to practice cautious optimism than soul-crushing pessimism. I know Ann Romney was supposed to soften her husband's image, but I think she missed the mark on a few levels. Sorry, but here's how I see it. Her personality is a bit too sharp to pull off the speaking from the heart angle. Team Romney has already thought of this, which is why they put out the story about her passing out homemade cookies on the plane. But like so much of Romney's messaging, it's a bit clumsy, like referring to himself as "severely conservative." The cookies came off as "I'm not Hilary." It was out of character with her behavior the rest of the campaign where she says things like how she'd just like to choke someone. Feistiness is good, don't get me wrong. It is how she survived cancer and MS. They should have played to her strengths and then let slip some vulnerability, much like when Hilary cried in NH. Some people said those were crocodile tears, but it worked. Talking about going to a school dance as a metaphor for entrusting her husband with stewardship with the country, the Jacqui Davisson blonde bouffant, the horror of their salad days when they ate tuna and pasta off an ironing board in their first apt. What woman isn't saying to herself, "It must be tough starting out in life with the son of the Governor of MI and living in Boston while he gets his MBA and JD at Harvard and getting by on his GM stock." People roared with laughter when Romney tweeted how much loves flying coach and eating at Subway. Mitt the Modest didn't work here, either. It would have been better to give examples of his work ethic, describe how he made it and reassure voters those opportunities would be there for them. It was a good speech. Ann Romney would make a wonderful first lady. But she can't singlehandedly close the gender gap. I'm always skeptical when wives are advertised as being some secret weapon.

One observation, those wind-up LED flashlights. The one from Ready America after about 200 cranks lasted 15 minutes before being too dim to use. And an hour later when I wanted to use it again, had to crank it another 200 times to get light. Don't think I want to try and use it to recharge my smartphone.
As for this post of Ace's. The Life of Julia should be subtitled The Veal Calf. Because that is how the socialists view everyone but themselves. Too stupid and naive, so must be gently lead along and fed until the death panel decides it wants to make veal of you.

I don't think even Bill Clinton can save the Dems convention next week. It's going to be deliciously cringe-worthy.
But.....the Washington Post will of course remain in the Obama camp, as will NYT and the usual suspects. Will the broadcast networks that are more entertainment-oriented now rather than hard news follow the rising star that is Paul Ryan? They completely abandoned Hillary in favor of the Next Big Thing back in 2008. It will be interesting to see what they do.

Many liked Paul because they thought he was a policy wonk, conservative, intelligent and educated. But what we have seen is so much more....warm, engaging, sincere, funny, intuitive, classy and edgy!! Paul can deliver in that Reagan way where he never sounds nasty yet he is delivering lethal after lethal blow. It is like watching a poetic annihilation eating a candy bar or bowl of ice cream. What I like about all this is that it is personal. Ryan's math wizardary at the health care summit confounding Obama. Obama then inviting him to the speech sitting him in the front row and then eviserating Ryan without allowing a comeback. I believe Ryan was an earnest and sincere man who met with the devil, a dumb devil, but a devil. Ryan would have succeeded in any path he chose. Obama, not so much. I have also read that Michelle hates the Irish Catholics from her Chicago days. This makes it so much more perfect.

A very weird thing happened this morning. I was listening to replays of Ryan's speech last night, I thought I was hearing JFK talking. The cadence and accent sounded the same. Then I heard something from a Romney speech and it sounded like Reagan talking, like those slow statements that he used to make letting the thought sink in for the audience.

I must say I was floored by Condi's speech. That was high octane intellectual passion tempered by the years of the assaults on her character. I developed a kind of deep loving respect for her as she layed her soul bare to the American people. What a treasure she is. Ryan-is the love child of Jack Kemp and Ayn Rand. I don't believe he could have done any better. The thing is he is only 42. His abilities will only gather steam and gravitas if he stays true. He is now enemy #1 to the media and the left, I repeat myself. If our movement is true I expect the gloves to come off very soon. Meaning Palin and the rest of the folks in wings will soon flood the media with defense of Ryan and the principals he put forth.It was a great night because I sensed the Obama camp panic a bit.

Got back last night from a fabulous long weekend in downtown Chicago. Our son was married there Sunday afternoon in the Columbus Park Refectory.

I was at the gym listening and when the riff on "life of julia" came out and he said "everything is free but us" I thought "awesome" and think that is as close to calling the president a socialist as any mainstream politician will do.

I agree with Ace. The preference cascade started when Ryan was chosen. I heard two lib talkers on the radio say the next morning, "what good does gay marriage do if the country is bankrupt? We've thinking of voting Romney."
Devastating, masterful speech. All those speeches were good! Immigrants, success, freedom! Next time a lib asks you where they dug up all those minorities, say "governors' offices, mayors' offices, academia, businesses."

Did anyone else hear Ryan say "the time for choosing is drawing near" and think of Reagan's speech in 1964? Am I reading too much into this, or is that an intentional reference? I prefer to think the latter. The GOP has been looking for the "next Reagan" since precisely noon, January 20, 1989, and I think Ryan may be that guy. Same sunny upper-Midwest optimistic populism, same belief in the inherent goodness and strength of the American people, same distrust of central government planning, etc. What a speech.

My wife is as apolotical and uninterested in politics as anyone I know. She wouldn't know Paul Ryan if he wore a sign on his chest that said "Hi, I'm Paul Ryan". I made her watch his speech with me last night and then asked her opinion after he was done. She said "I tried really hard not to like it, but I thought it was great! I like this guy!"
That's all I needed to know, I think there are probably millions just like her that just became Ryan fans.

Obama is lost because he can't use his usual tricks to win here. He can't get some super secret court records released to make Mitt drop out of the race (give me your tax returns!!). He can't use his race to win (I have a funny sounding name!). He can't use his gift of BS to win, because people aren't buying it any more (which makes Mitt's campaign of "it's okay, you voted for him. Come inside and let's wash that off." perfect.) Exactly Right.
The RR campaign is proving to be nimble, intelligent and pitch perfect in so many ways....not the least of which inpicking Ryan. Even when they make risky decisions and some of us get nervous (even little things like "this convention is proving very boring") turn out to be perfectly calculated and correct. The medicare debate, the war on women, even Romney's supposed 'birhter' gaffe....they seem two steps ahead of the press and light years ahead of the obama campaign.
