(CNBC) Applications for unemployment benefits continued to rise in the past week, while inflation pushed higher and a key manufacturing index weakened.
The weekly jobless claims number, which is closely watched as an indicator for employment trends, unexpectedly rose 11,000 to 428,000, well ahead of estimates of 411,000.
Consumers paid more for a range of goods and services last month, pushing up inflation and squeezing Americans' purchasing power.
It goes up almost every week that's why it's so unexpected. If Congress would just pass Barry's bill we would then have Utopia!

I'm not buying this lost decade.
2001-2007 were boom years. So what if it was a false boom. It's not like the money people made then wasn't real, the jobs they had weren't real, and the goods and services they aquired during that time weren't real.
The downturn has been 2008-2011. There is a good possibility that it goes until 2018, I don't think it's fair to call the past decade a lost decade

I don't buy the loss decade crap either, but that is mostly because I suspect the political winds will change enough we will finally start to tap our resources, compete for efficiency on the global market and get growth in our manufacturing sector over the tag end of the next decade. The US' genuine wealth creation is being stymied by a platitude fed activism that is an artifical cost to how well we do business here. Gramps taught me "platitudes have a short half life on an empty tummy", and Captain Platitude of the USS HopeChange is not filling the American economic belly.

Oh I understand that, but you did use the money you earned then to buy food, consumer products, make investments, etc etc, right?
It's not like because off the downturn in 2008 that people came to your house and took away all the food you ate or things you bought(unless you bought them on credit)
I'm simply saying a bubble does eventually burst, but the money made during the the bubble by the average person was very real in terms of things they consumed

Re the inflation article, I can't say I'm on board. When you ask the author where the inflation is actually hitting, or going to hit, hisanswer is "somewhere." He seems to assert that the demand for dollars is inelastic - that each new dollar creates an exactly proportional dillution of each dollar in the existing pool. I see no reason to believe that.
So long as the banks feel the need to sit on massive reserves, and so long as there is still a massive glut of unused productive capacity, and record low real estate prices, I don't see where there's a lack of money sinks. The only "inflation" we're seeing so far, that I've seen any good numbers on, is fuel and food. Those are plainly due to increased demand and reduced supply. That's not inflation in the sense that we usually think of it (currency debasement) - it's simply price increases. Any Moron on this blog could devise policy changes that would fix both of those within the space of 6 months.
The real question, in my mind, is what the response will be IF the economy ever starts to recover. Then the banks might start loaning. Unemployment could drop. These are good things, and worth some inflation, but there will need to be a plan to prevent overheating and a more harmful level of inflation. A healthy interest rate increase might be enough - I don't really know with any certainty. But all that activity will be taxed (and heavily) so I don't think the demand for dollars will drop much.
Also, to the extent that it debased our currency relative to others, some inflation is good. Help push down imports and push up exports. Those drive greater US employment, and help weaken our enemies.

If you own productive assets their value will climb along with inflation. It may serve as a massive pay cut in your current job, though, so your ability to buy more productiveassets will suffer. But why worry? Even many conservatives think Americans are grossly overpaid as it is and live in too much luxury, so if we get a pay cut via inflation it's just us getting our just desserts. (personlly I think that's BS, but you'll hear this theory from time to time)

Really, at this point, I think the stock market has just completely decoupled itself from the rest of the world. Maybe they'll re-couple later, maybe they wont, but I don't think the stock market is a good indicator of anything (though it's still fun to make fun of El JEFfe when it tanks).

I can still buy a loaf of white bread for $1.00. Kroger uses it as a loss leader. Coffee (I use instant mostly) I buy with coupons and pay attention to sales at CVS, where they use it as their loss leader.
I buy family packs of steaks and cut and re-package them. (I only need 1/2 of a rib-eye, for example.) I also buy certain staple items at Sam's CLub IF they are cheaper than Kroger. Grew my own tomatoes this summer.
I now cook a lot of things from scratch. I also have a couple of meatless meals per week. For those who are suddenly confronting this rapid rise in food prices, there are several sites on the internet that have strategies and recipes.
I am very grateful that my parents never lost their Depression mentality and that as the oldest daughter, I learned a lot of "make-do" skills from my parents.

#74 I routinely use coupons, and have for years. One thing I have noticed, though: coupons expire more quickly than they used to.
Ten years ago I would go through my file every 3-4 months and weed out expired ones. Now most coupons expire after a month, and some in as little as 2 weeks. I imagine this is because of the couponing shows on television, whose popularity is also a sign of the times.
Ten years ago I would go through my file every 3-4 months and weed out expired ones. Now most coupons expire after a month, and some in as little as 2 weeks. I imagine this is because of the couponing shows on television, whose popularity is also a sign of the times.

Doom? Not always. A small victory in grocery shopping with my wife on triple coupon Wednesday's for the 60+ crowd. Combine that with a trip to the dented/sans label can cart at the back of the store guarantees a culinary adventure for the coming week.

My 90-year-old grandpa passed yesterday in his sleep. He was a WWII vet, having flown, maintained, and manned a side gun in B-25s. The world is a little darker today without him.

He was a funny guy. I lived across the road from him when I was growing up, and every now and then we'd hear a rifle shot. About 10 minutes later, he'd saunter across the road with a cigarette in his mouth to tell us about the latest woodchuck he'd blasted out of his garden or water snake he shot in the trout stream.
He was a rock for our family and liked simple things in life. Fishing, hunting, farming. That old man could do everything, too. Car repairs, carpentry, plumbing, woodworking. They definitely don't make them like him anymore.
He was a true member of the Moron community, even if he never used the internet. His 60th birthday cake was shaped like two boobs, complete with nipples. We have a pic of the dirty SOB eating the frosting nipple off the cake.

My mom is 90. She had me in her mid-40s, the baby (12 year gap) of the brood. It's amazing what that generation saw. She still walks 3-4 miles a day and keeps up with the latest styles. Wears heels when she feels like it. People think she's about 70. Anyway, I took her to the FDR memorial years ago. Asked her if she wanted a picture with eleanor. She said, no, never liked her.

Been reading the comments section to the NYT article re: Dems Race to Save Jewish Vote. First, the NYTs attempts to spin the impact - duh, they hired Krugman so their objectivity meter in reporting has been broken for awhile. Reading the comments, I noticed atrend where avowed Jews would strongly declare their support for teh won and attack the motivation of NY9 voters or any Jew questioning teh won's love of Israel. Another way to save is Restraint Depot - their prices can beat Costco. You just need a business license - got to your boss or head secretary and borrow it. You can justify it for the "cafeteria" - then leave the card at work for all to use. The real coupon change I have noticed is a drop off in the checkout coupons targeted at what you buy - those were the most useful.

Has anyone from the morons leaning Perry started working on the campaign yet? I'm on the list, but I don't know if they will even try for Utah. I think they should, because - setting religious affiliations aside for a moment - most of the Utahns I've met would be well-aligned with Perry's policies.

If you were to come up with a charging system that allowed you to 'fuel' an electric car at the same rate that you pour energy into a conventional vehicle - how many cars could the average 500 megawatt nuclear reactor fuel at one time? This was a question which a physics professor asked his physics students. The answer as I remember was 85.
In other words to make electric vehicles reasonable you would need to ring every major city with nuclear power plants just to 'fuel' the cars.
The battery which Thomas Edison came up with for his electric car was the Nickel Iron battery; it was very difficult to damage - overcharging and short circuits don't hurt it - it had about the energy density of a modern Lithium battery - was inexpensive - lasted for at least 20 years - used a base liquid instead of an acid - all more or less perfect specifications. (By the way, you don't want to short a modern lithium battery - they can explode if you do; we had several of them blow up at NASA when I worked there.)
You don't hear about Nickel-Iron batteries much today because they were victims of their own success; who as a manufacturer wants to build batteries that last 20 years? There is no aftermarket replacement need for a product that good. Modern electric vehicles would be substantially improved by using Nickel-Iron batteries.
Instead we get cars like the Toyota Prius which has to have its $10,000 dollar batteries replaced every few years. That battery replacement cost kind of sours the alleged economies of electric vehicles doesn't it?
Pure electric vehicles make no sense - Edison's electric car worked about as well as any pure electric vehicle ever has. If hybrids were built using Nickel-Iron batteries they would make some sense - but of course they aren't.

There is no aftermarket replacement need for a product that good. Modern electric vehicles would be substantially improved by using Nickel-Iron batteries.
Instead we get cars like the Toyota Prius which has to have its $10,000 dollar batteries replaced every few years. That battery replacement cost kind of sours the alleged economies of electric vehicles doesn't it?
Pure electric vehicles make no sense - Edison's electric car worked about as well as any pure electric vehicle ever has. If hybrids were built using Nickel-Iron batteries they would make some sense - but of course they aren't.
I used to joke about the Yugo - "the peak of Serbo-Croation technology" (sadly it actually was just that) as being the finest vehicle that socialism ever produced, and it was that also. No more - with the inception of Government Motors I guess the Cadillac CTS now holds that honor. Don't worry though, as Atlas Shrugs predicts GM will be back producing the Yugo before your head can spin - of course this time around it will be an electric Yugo. We do live in interesting times.

I went back and read them. That Nissan dealer who wrote that is one shameless shill, and he got a lot of facts wrong too.
The Leaf is slower than the Versa. And he can deny it all he wants, but Car and Driver did see extremely short and variable range . It was so bad they had trouble getting people to sign out the car during their long-term test.
He lies about fracking causing groundwater problems (fracking occurs far below the water table). He claims 30% of Leaf owners charge their cars with solar energy, an interesting trick for a commuter vehicle which would be at work during the day when solar might actually work, and even if true, neglects the massive cost of the solar installation.
He ends off with the "external costs" of oil, steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that EVs could have any external costs, as if they spring fully-formed from Gaia's forehead.

My 90-year-old grandpa passed yesterday in his sleep. He was a WWII
vet, having flown, maintained, and manned a side gun in B-25s. The
world is a little darker today without him.I know the Moron
Horde would have some prayers for the old guy, and I know he'd smile
knowing others are thinking of him. Any thoughts or prayers would be

Such women are much more emotionally approachable. In addition you know that any man that talks to you has the required amount of physical courage. Openly carry a gun and you will find that the quality of men that approach you will go way up; it really filters the jerks and weasels out.
