DOOM: The goggles do nothing

DOOOOM

Mortgage default notices surge 33% nationwide. Expect an untick in foreclosures to follow. (Fallout from the "robosigning" debacle?)

You think inflation isn’t a problem? Check out this chart. Inflation isn’t low; it’s hidden (for now). And in some countries, it's already out in the open.

Timmah says there won’t be a Lehman-style event in Europe, but then again, Timmah says lots of things. Other (smarter) people are saying that a Lehman-style event is not only possible, but more likely than not. From Willy the Shake: The plague of Greece upon thee, thou mongrel beef-witted lord!

The slow-motion collapse of the “blue model” welfare state continues.

Tax policy gives me a headache and makes me want to sleep for ten days, but Rep. Paul Ryan has some good ideas which he shares here.

Herr Obama, liebchen, can I have $1 Trillion from your stash? I know I said I didn’t need any more money, but I was telling a schmutzige Lüge.

Funny how it's the Greeks who are going bankrupt, but it's the Germans who are drawing the most anguished attention. I think the frustration regarding Germany boils down to: "Either fish or cut bait."

How would a Greek ejection from the Euro *work*, in a nuts and bolts sense? Given the problems Tyler discusses in this piece, any transition is going to be a real mess.

It’s almost as if ObamaCare was thrown together as a purely political ploy, with no thought given as to how to actually pay for any of it. Pass the bill to find out what's in it! (F**k you, Nan-nan. Right in your Botoxed ear.)

Speaking of ObamaCare: The specter of this looming government disaster is part of why businesses aren't hiring.

What will the so-called “Supercommittee” be able to accomplish? If history and common sense are any guide: very little.

We get our very own "lost decade". I think I'm turning Japanese! I really think so!

Thomas Sowell: "Don't just do something! Stand there!"

We're not the only ones who have noticed that all of Obama's jobs schemes seem to target "blue" states.

In short, the bond market has concluded that the more unionized the state and the bluer its political coloring, the riskier it is to hold bonds marketed by that state.
Might wanna rebalance that Muni portfolio.

Louis Woodhill of Forbes agrees with me: electric cars are a really stupid idea.

Sauron speaks from Mount Doom: The can has reached the end of the road.

Voters in Hollywood, Florida vote to cut pensions of cops, firefighters, and city employees. Expect a court fight from the various unions, of course.

UPDATE 1: Has the great Chinese bond sell-off begun? Like I said earlier in the thread -- it might be a good time to rebalance your portfolio.

UPDATE 2: Yeah, we're in hock up to our ears and have no prospects of higher growth going forward, but what the hell...let's bail out the rest of the world! If we're gonna go down, let's make a big splash while doing it! Plus, this'll make everyone love us, right? Right? (From mcat in the comments.)

2 (CNBC) Applications for unemployment benefits continued to rise in the past week, while inflation pushed higher and a key manufacturing index weakened.
The weekly jobless claims number, which is closely watched as an indicator for employment trends, unexpectedly rose 11,000 to 428,000, well ahead of estimates of 411,000.
Consumers paid more for a range of goods and services last month, pushing up inflation and squeezing Americans' purchasing power.

It goes up almost every week that's why it's so unexpected. If Congress would just pass Barry's bill we would then have Utopia!

I'm not buying this lost decade.
2001-2007 were boom years. So what if it was a false boom. It's not like the money people made then wasn't real, the jobs they had weren't real, and the goods and services they aquired during that time weren't real.
The downturn has been 2008-2011. There is a good possibility that it goes until 2018, I don't think it's fair to call the past decade a lost decade

deserve their pensions and all the perks we can give them," Kraut said. "And I
don't mind paying the taxes to fund it either."

This, from the Florida Police/Fire-Fighters article, really struck me. I wonder if she still wouldn't "mind paying the taxes to fund it" if that meant she couldn't afford to buy her own groceries. You know, if they really confiscated enough of her wealth to actually fund those pension plans correctly.

18 12 ben,

as jeanne says in 14 it was not money it was credit, the "boom" was a transfer of promise not any wild slightly improperly valued product.

I don't buy the loss decade crap either, but that is mostly because I suspect the political winds will change enough we will finally start to tap our resources, compete for efficiency on the global market and get growth in our manufacturing sector over the tag end of the next decade. The US' genuine wealth creation is being stymied by a platitude fed activism that is an artifical cost to how well we do business here. Gramps taught me "platitudes have a short half life on an empty tummy", and Captain Platitude of the USS HopeChange is not filling the American economic belly.

>>it wasn't money. it was credit.

Oh I understand that, but you did use the money you earned then to buy food, consumer products, make investments, etc etc, right?
It's not like because off the downturn in 2008 that people came to your house and took away all the food you ate or things you bought(unless you bought them on credit)
I'm simply saying a bubble does eventually burst, but the money made during the the bubble by the average person was very real in terms of things they consumed

DOOM: The goggles do nothing

LOL. Thanks for opening with that - it took some of the sting out of the rest of the DOOM.
Re the inflation article, I can't say I'm on board. When you ask the author where the inflation is actually hitting, or going to hit, hisanswer is "somewhere." He seems to assert that the demand for dollars is inelastic - that each new dollar creates an exactly proportional dillution of each dollar in the existing pool. I see no reason to believe that.
So long as the banks feel the need to sit on massive reserves, and so long as there is still a massive glut of unused productive capacity, and record low real estate prices, I don't see where there's a lack of money sinks. The only "inflation" we're seeing so far, that I've seen any good numbers on, is fuel and food. Those are plainly due to increased demand and reduced supply. That's not inflation in the sense that we usually think of it (currency debasement) - it's simply price increases. Any Moron on this blog could devise policy changes that would fix both of those within the space of 6 months.
The real question, in my mind, is what the response will be IF the economy ever starts to recover. Then the banks might start loaning. Unemployment could drop. These are good things, and worth some inflation, but there will need to be a plan to prevent overheating and a more harmful level of inflation. A healthy interest rate increase might be enough - I don't really know with any certainty. But all that activity will be taxed (and heavily) so I don't think the demand for dollars will drop much.
Also, to the extent that it debased our currency relative to others, some inflation is good. Help push down imports and push up exports. Those drive greater US employment, and help weaken our enemies.

If you own productive assets their value will climb along with inflation. It may serve as a massive pay cut in your current job, though, so your ability to buy more productiveassets will suffer. But why worry? Even many conservatives think Americans are grossly overpaid as it is and live in too much luxury, so if we get a pay cut via inflation it's just us getting our just desserts. (personlly I think that's BS, but you'll hear this theory from time to time)

The EU were it a true federal system would TELL Germany and the other states "this is what we're gonna do to help out Fredo over there." but because it is a non-elected chickenshit hybrid of a mess it can only ask other states to help.

If they force greece out how do they keep Italy and Spain in?

If they force Germany to aid Greece through coercion it exposes that the council is a bunch of unelected thugs how do they prevent domestic pressure by member voting populations to leave?

If they ignore the problem how do they avoid the perception that they are a paper tiger and cannot influence policy?

Greece made the choice to implode, and Germany thus far has the right to say no.

If I had insider info on Germany's reaction I'd buy up 15,000 bucks of Greek Junk Bonds tomorrow.

71 I can still buy a loaf of white bread for $1.00. Kroger uses it as a loss leader. Coffee (I use instant mostly) I buy with coupons and pay attention to sales at CVS, where they use it as their loss leader.

I buy family packs of steaks and cut and re-package them. (I only need 1/2 of a rib-eye, for example.) I also buy certain staple items at Sam's CLub IF they are cheaper than Kroger. Grew my own tomatoes this summer.

I now cook a lot of things from scratch. I also have a couple of meatless meals per week. For those who are suddenly confronting this rapid rise in food prices, there are several sites on the internet that have strategies and recipes.

I am very grateful that my parents never lost their Depression mentality and that as the oldest daughter, I learned a lot of "make-do" skills from my parents.

I thought that they were trying to do the exact opposite. Since they're currently in a primary, they seemed to be trying to cast Perry as being to the left of them, that is, when Romney isn't trying to reenact the DNC ad of granny being pushed off the cliff, with Perry in a cameo role. Apparantly Romney has decided after his book was published that the leading man role in the ad wasn't for him.

Ten years ago I would go through my file every 3-4 months and weed out expired ones. Now most coupons expire after a month, and some in as little as 2 weeks. I imagine this is because of the couponing shows on television, whose popularity is also a sign of the times.

The Politburo is the biggest contretemp to leftist economic ideology.

The left accepts as gospel the notion that concentrating economic oversight into a small number of hands results in better judgement, higher standards of ethics, and better wealth distribution.

14 people effectively had 100% economic oversight of the largest nation on Earth that has arguably the greatest wealth potential.

They could never manage to get their 10% arable land to effectively feed their nation.

Facing growing opposition to his economic proposals and dimming

Obama told a Hispanic group in Washington Wednesday that when it comes

"As I mentioned when I was at La Raza a few weeks back, I wish I had a

until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again -- I'd like to work my way around

And they can see through a woman that apparently will make up stories and embrace lunatic fringe positions worthy of a Tinfoil Cap anytime she thinks her polling numbers are in trouble.

Here is the secret, IMO, of Perry's to-date success: he looks and talks like Ronald Reagan. People respond to that. They KNOW here is a guy that won't dump on the American Way of Life. After 4 years of Obama, that matters to them more than anything.

My guess is that Romney and Bachmann were both advised to stem the tide, lest they be swept away. It's interesting to note that the attacks were very different, but are having virtually the same reaction, though Romney is experiencing less of a blowback, except in the polling.

98 @83
#74 I routinely use coupons, and have for years. One thing I have

Yeah, I did the coupon thing when I lost my job (while we were in California). I had the time and at the particular store I went to, they worked well enough, especially for toiletries, paper goods, etc. If you went brand name. But I didn't find them that useful for food, because it seemed a lot of them were for brand-name processed foods -- things we would use anyway. Once we went on the diet (for Mr Y-not's health) we really didn't use the food coupons because I was cooking almost entirely from scratch.

Here in Utah we have tons of space (and entire room in the basement equipped for storage - thank you, Joseph Smith!) so the strategy is bulk buying, switching to store brands for most things (except toilet paper, tissues, and napkins, I can't stand cheap paper products for some reason!), and buying when things are on sale. And Costco. Costco is da bomb for household goods and meat.

He was a funny guy. I lived across the road from him when I was growing up, and every now and then we'd hear a rifle shot. He was a rock for our family and liked simple things in life. Fishing, hunting, farming. That old man could do everything, too. Car repairs, carpentry, plumbing, woodworking. They definitely don't make them like him anymore.

125 Been reading the comments section to the NYT article re: Dems Race to Save Jewish Vote. First, the NYTs attempts to spin the impact - duh, they hired Krugman so their objectivity meter in reporting has been broken for awhile. Reading the comments, I noticed atrend where avowed Jews would strongly declare their support for teh won and attack the motivation of NY9 voters or any Jew questioning teh won's love of Israel. It almost seems that they are political minders sent in to ruff up or dirty up any Jew who would consider going Repug. Are these real people or just Head Capo Oven Jews? The NYT is a very icky place to dwell. I feel so dirty.

126 Why? The only thing better than a goreworshipper being bombarded by spam
would be for one to be bombarded by their buddha. Their god not only
bleeds, he bloviates.

The spam spreads to "friends", so the choice is either unfriend/block people, or put up with unwanted crap.
Just because I am at odds with somebody philosophically doesn't mean they're not decent human beings for the most part.

The friend list I'm down to has non-verbally agreed to shun politics. That gets reserved for other 'meetings' -- possibly on this site. I don't know.

maybe...but not for a bit yet as it is still the most efficient medium for transfers between markets in many cases.

Hell even the dollar imploding can be used for good if you have a good economic team and business philosophy to match it....

the issue is not some "dollar value" it is purchasing power of a buck....

if the US has business friendly policy investment preferably with foreign capital will happen this new capacity can then be bought at fire sale prices to meet US demand and the revaluation of price can begin.

169 Electric cars make no sense in other ways too.

If you were to come up with a charging system that allowed you to 'fuel' an electric car at the same rate that you pour energy into a conventional vehicle - how many cars could the average 500 megawatt nuclear reactor fuel at one time? This was a question which a physics professor asked his physics students. The answer as I remember was 85.

In other words to make electric vehicles reasonable you would need to ring every major city with nuclear power plants just to 'fuel' the cars.

The battery which Thomas Edison came up with for his electric car was the Nickel Iron battery; it was very difficult to damage - overcharging and short circuits don't hurt it - it had about the energy density of a modern Lithium battery - was inexpensive - lasted for at least 20 years - used a base liquid instead of an acid - all more or less perfect specifications. (By the way, you don't want to short a modern lithium battery - they can explode if you do; we had several of them blow up at NASA when I worked there.)

You don't hear about Nickel-Iron batteries much today because they were victims of their own success; who as a manufacturer wants to build batteries that last 20 years? There is no aftermarket replacement need for a product that good. Modern electric vehicles would be substantially improved by using Nickel-Iron batteries.

Instead we get cars like the Toyota Prius which has to have its $10,000 dollar batteries replaced every few years. That battery replacement cost kind of sours the alleged economies of electric vehicles doesn't it?

Pure electric vehicles make no sense - Edison's electric car worked about as well as any pure electric vehicle ever has. If hybrids were built using Nickel-Iron batteries they would make some sense - but of course they aren't.

I used to joke about the Yugo - "the peak of Serbo-Croation technology" (sadly it actually was just that) as being the finest vehicle that socialism ever produced, and it was that also. No more - with the inception of Government Motors I guess the Cadillac CTS now holds that honor. Don't worry though, as Atlas Shrugs predicts GM will be back producing the Yugo before your head can spin - of course this time around it will be an electric Yugo. We do live in interesting times.

170 Anyone else read the comments in the electric car article?

I went back and read them. That Nissan dealer who wrote that is one shameless shill, and he got a lot of facts wrong too.

The Leaf is slower than the Versa. And he can deny it all he wants, but Car and Driver did see extremely short and variable range . It was so bad they had trouble getting people to sign out the car during their long-term test.

He lies about fracking causing groundwater problems (fracking occurs far below the water table). He claims 30% of Leaf owners charge their cars with solar energy, an interesting trick for a commuter vehicle which would be at work during the day when solar might actually work, and even if true, neglects the massive cost of the solar installation.

He ends off with the "external costs" of oil, steadfastly refusing to acknowledge that EVs could have any external costs, as if they spring fully-formed from Gaia's forehead.

Posted by: The Poster Formerly Known as Mr. Barky at September 15, 2011 12:18 PM (qwK3S)

176 And for the women who don't understand why a woman with a gun is hot - an explanation.

Women are frightened of men they don't know. That is simply true - any guy who has the emotional sensitivity of a mollusc can sense that. Frightened women are not very approachable women; the last thing any quality man wants to do is frighten women. A girl carrying a loaded M-16 isn't nearly as afraid of men she doesn't know. Such women are much more emotionally approachable. In addition you know that any man that talks to you has the required amount of physical courage. Openly carry a gun and you will find that the quality of men that approach you will go way up; it really filters the jerks and weasels out.

Does that make sense?
