Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Palin's Tea Party Speech In Indianola "On Hold"She announced yesterday that she'll fly to New Hampshire to meet with a Tea Party group there right after she's done in Iowa -- a sign that maybe she is running after all. But meanwhile, there's a problem with the much-promoted September 3rd appearance.Sarah Palin’s Saturday appearance at a tea party rally in Indianola, Iowa, is on hold, a person close the former Alaska governor told The Wall Street Journal. The person said Ms. Palin’s appearance was “no longer confirmed” and cited “continual lying” from event organizers at Tea Party of America, including a recent mixup over whether former U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell of Delaware would also speak. Ms. Palin is known for last-minute schedule changes that whipsaw supporters and media across the country. But the latest decision is puzzling. Ms. Palin’s speech at the rally was viewed as her most high-profile appearance of the summer, fueling speculation she was indeed plotting to run for the Republican presidential nomination. Attendees were reportedly traveling from across the U.S. to attend the rally in Iowa, which holds the nation’s first nominating contest next year. The whole article is jam-packed and I can't excerpt it all. One major issue seems to be the invitation extended to Christine O'Donnell to speak before Palin, which, if I'm reading this right, the Palin team quashed. But then, after cancelling that, the Tea Party group re-invited O"Donnell, some Tea Party organizers of the event "lying" (a source claims) in telling Palin's people that Palin herself had authorized a re-invitation. I always thought it was pretty dumb that Christine O'Donnell would be speaking before Palin, if she intended to announce her bid for the presidency-- she doesn't need that headache. And I took this (silently; didn't write it) as a sign maybe she wasn't running. But it turns out the Tea Party group organizing the event did this on their own, and Palin rejected it, and then they re-invited Christine O'Donnell, and Palin put the whole event "on hold." She's apparently putting together some other appearances, without this group's involvement. I know this is going to cause the typical fights in the comments but it's news. I also know there is no point in saying this, but Ms. Palin's current jobs are 1, to appear on FoxNews, and 2, to manage her appearances, and she is forever cancelling appearances for one reason or another. This doesn't give me confidence in her management abilities, but I'm sure that's just because I hate women. It also doesn't give me confidence that we have more accusations of "lying." Maybe the Tea Party organizers did lie. Or maybe they were just confused. Maybe they were just disorganized. I don't know. But things tend to get personal with the Palins, and accusations of bad faith and malice quickly issue. Yes, It Was About Christine O'Donnell: We already knew this, but... To cut Palin a break -- What. Were. They. Thinking? Assuming Palin wanted to announce for President-- did she want the nightly news report on this announcement to feature "speaking before Palin was failed Tea Party candidate Christine O'Donnell, who earlier had to deny she was a witch"? The Tea Party often says it wants to bring "common sense" to America. I believe them, and I think it's important. But they seem to have a blind spot, or an unwillingness to accept certain "common sense" realities -- such as the fact that while some (not all) Tea Partiers may still view Christine O'Donnell as a maligned hero, most of the public -- and, I'd imagine, most of the Tea Party -- views her as a drag on the movement. There is a "Never give up on anything" spirit in some Tea Partiers which is kind of laudable but also kind of dunderheaded. Some bets have been lost. The house took those bets back hours ago. Going to the ATM and withdrawing another $5000 to win those bad bets back is a losing strategy, and exactly what the house -- the Media-Democratic Complex -- wants you to do. The More I Think About It... The less I find fault with Palin. What was the Tea Party of America thinking? A Christine O'Donnell appearance siphons some of Palin's prestige and viability (which are not in oversupply) to Christine O'Donnell. Palin would validate (to some extent) O'Donnell, but only at the expense of Palin's supply of political capital. How does this help Palin? It doesn't. Quite the opposite. And even if the rehabilitation of Christine O'Donnell is a worthy goal (which it's not, but if it were), Palin would naturally object to being drafted into being a major player in this project. Further, if there is one time it is not selfish to declare "It's all about me, and everyone must focus on me," it is when you are declaring for President. If Palin had a mind to declare on September 3rd, what is the Tea Party of America doing by stealing some of her spotlight for the non-factor Christine O'Donnell? And then, after Palin's objections, re-inviting her anyway? Still, if this was to be announcement, it should have been better controlled. It should have been the case that Palin, not the Tea Party of America, invited the other speakers. Now "No Change"? Seems like the toothpaste is being stuffed back into the tube. A Tea Party of America spokesman now says if there's been a change, he doesn't know about it. But that conflicts with a prior statement from the Tea Party of America president: Tea Party of America President Ken Crow told NBC News, "I had to cancel Ms. O'Donnell" after a conversation with Sarah Palin aides -- and is now hopeful Palin will attend the Saturday rally in Indianola. He was told by Palin's team that he'd have a final answer shortly. ... The group has spent about $100,000 on the event for Palin and are thus waiting "with baited breath" for an answer. An official press release will come out after Palin people give Crow final word. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The media is just mad that she whipsaws the media, not what she does to her supporters.
But if I were a Palin Supporter (as opposed to a defender) I'd've given up on her a long time ago. And, look, she isn't the white knight of the Republican party. People aren't thinking about her and don't need her. She didn't even register at the straw poll and I guarantee that she would have gotten votes if people wanted her. She will not win the primary. Perry is The Hulk of the Republican party. If you hit him, he just becomes stronger. She's not toxic? You say "especially to the tea party" but that's "especially," so you're saying she's not generally toxic. If that's what you're saying, and it does appear you are, I think you have insulated yourself far too much from outside-the-conservative-bubble sources, and are now cocooning yourself. The problem with O'Donnell isn't O'Donnell. It's that we didn't have someone better available. Someone who is both passable to conservatives and electable in DE. Perhaps that isn't even possible, but I think it is and the reason that election was so sore is because it's frustrating not to be able to find such a person.
We can't rely on the Tea Party Express to find these electable conservatives. Only the grassroots will do it in those harder states. I don't hear a lot of talk about taking over the party anymore, but it should still be ongoing. Getting involved in your precinct and taking over the party is a permanent condition of the real TEA partiers. Swinburn's paper comes up with a clear primary culprit: a powerful global food industry "which is producing more processed, affordable, and effectively-marketed food than ever before".He said an "increased supply of cheap, palatable, energy-dense foods", coupled with better distribution and marketing, had led to "passive overconsumption". >>>Ok, I am giving up on Palin. There is just too much drama with everything she does Maybe it's by design but I really don't care anymore.
Not to pile on but this is one of the main reasons I got off the Palin train a long time ago. It stopped being about questions about her intellect and started being about questions about her temperament. There's always a problem, there's always a swirl of drama. There are always outside actors to be blamed for "lying." Honestly, in this case, I think there might have actually have been some lying by the Tea Party organizers, or at least some real resistance to her quashing the CO'D appearance. But there is a pattern here. Further, Palin could have laid down the law -- I speak, or she speaks, but not both; choose. Did she communicate this to them unambiguously? I don't know. It seems like they failed to get the message that CO'D would NOT be a warm-up act for Palin. Posted by: ace at August 31, 2011 01:32 PM (nj1bB) 81
Palin is starting to wear kind of thin with me. If she enters the race now, she's handing Mittens the GOP nomination by splitting the Tea Party vote. If you liked 2008, you'll love 2012 as the Mittster reaches across the aisle and tries to fine tune ObamaCare.
Palin should do the honorable thing by endorsing Rick Perry and then she should campaign like hell for him. Posted by: al-Cicero, Tea Party Jihadist at August 31, 2011 01:32 PM (QKKT0) 82

The problem is that in the runup to the primary, Castle didn't even give conservatives a reach-around. He made all sorts of really unnecessary liberal votes. He came off as spiteful toward the right and that's why so many DE primary voters relished voting him out. Self-defeating? Almost surely, but there it is. Palin canceled her bus tour during the tour, she cancelled her trip to the Sudan, Last February she cancelled several speeches after the Giffords shooting. The McCain campaign was irritated because she cancelled several speeches on the west Coast in September of 08 with only days notice. In Aug pf 09 she cancelled a speech at the last munute to the Alaska Family Council. There's many more.

Latest from the Des Moines Register is that there were three issues Team Palin wanted resolved - the first two had to do with event logistics : a firm schedule and backstage security. No. 3 was a "can I get back to you" item that is/was (with somewhere around 99% probability) a firm disinvite message to COD.

The point is the pattern. I alluded to it in an earlier comment. Think about this. Let's say there's a guy who, it seems, has a pattern of being late to work. Always with a reasonable explanation: his car wouldn't start, he got stuck in bad traffic, his alarm didn't go off, he got stuck in bad traffic again, etc., etc. At some point, doesn't that become a pattern of unreliability? I was always taught that it was. Now let's go one further: at some point, the employer has to lay down the law: make it in on time, or find new employment. The next day, the guy has a wreck on the way into work: is the employer fully unjustified in firing him anyway? It may suck for perpetually-late-guy, but the employer doesn't really have much choice, either: he's got to cut that deadweight so he can get in someone who will be on time reliably. Now, I don't know if Palin has a "pattern" for cancelling appearances or not (I don't pay that much attention to her comings and goings, truth be told). If that perception exists, regardless of the reality, it behooves her to show up to engagements even when they're inconvenient/embarrassing. That way, she can start dispelling (eventually) that perception by saying, "I had a commitment, I met it." "The problem is that in the runup to the primary, Castle didn't even give conservatives a reach-around. "
Amishdude, I agree. That's actually what I'm saying. We had a choice between someone who wasn't passable on core issues vs someone who was unelectable. I opted for the RINO, because a 50% friend is better than establishing an incumbent 100% enemy. A lot of the things said about Castle weren't true, but it's totally true he's not with us on hard fights, where the full margin of the Senate matters. He wasn't really acceptable, but he's also the only R who was winning statewide elections in DE. I refuse to believe Castle and O'Donnell are even close to the best the GOP could produce for delaware. It should have been a wake up call for searching for better candidates years in advance. Everyone major who got involved with DE, from Palin to Levin to the major moderates who opted for Castle (Rove, for example) should have spent the next year finding someone they could all work with. Otherwise, they created a wedge issue and didn't resolve it. What I've seen since then is that on fights like balancing the budget, you really are either with us or you're against us. Many of these weaker Senators find balancing the budget to be not a priority, or even not a good idea, and my willingness to tolerate a RINO is much lower now. But the essential problem is unchanged. Amishdude, I agree. That's actually what I'm saying. We had a choice
between someone who wasn't passable on core issues vs someone who was unelectable. It wasn't even that. DE Republicans knew what Castle was, but even Snarlin' Arlen, before he had the ill-fated party switch, used to give PA Republicans the reach-around every 6 years. We knew it was coming and we knew that if he was elected that the last 2 years of that term would be OK. He'd do a couple of good things and would be a judicious Judas. Castle acted as if conservatives were something nasty he found on the bottom of his shoe. I think a lot of people knew Castle would be a RINO squish but were OK with it if he'd be with us on big things, but he had the air of somebody who was going to take office, call himself an R and then use that to show that every sh*t sandwich was a bipartisan one. I'm still of the camp that "it doesn't matter who you vote for, it matters who takes office" but I have no sympathy for Castle, he did it to himself and he could have easily reached out to conservatives without alienating independents. what you are failing to see is that the tea party people found out they could get Christine on her book tour and figured since Palin endorsed Christine that Palin would be so happy to have Christine as part of the event. It's a very normal logical conclusion. Wasn't this the speech where they expected so many people they had to change the venue? If Palin isn't running, she needs to explain why she wanted so much oxygen taken from candidates most similar to her. It's difficult to gain support in a crowded field, especially since some conservatives are waiting for someone to show up.
Palin hasn't really been pushing a political agenda. She's been on a tour, but it's been a while since I noticed a really effective policy expression from her (she's done very well over the past few years, just not much in the past few months). I still like Palin. She's one of the good guys. I believe she is coordinating with one of the candidates and will endorse them, and at that point perhaps much of her behavior will make strategic sense. It was hard for any of Perry's adversaries to really get a huge footing with Palin actively on the road. Now that Perry's in it, I think Palin's appearances have gotten notably less potent. Perry knew, due to the state's legislative session, he would enter the race later than others, so he needed a stalking horse. This prevents Bachmann or Cain from getting too large a following and sets up a Romney v Perry fight. Of course, I just pulled that out of my ass, but it's how it's worked out and I'm OK with that. Wow, Obama's trying to preempt the GOP debate? Why do those assholes even call themselves democratic anymore?
Mostly because it disrupts the schedule templates of all potential candidates. Then, they can all be accused of what Palin is being accused of -- unorganized. Which she certainly must be if she coordinated with a Tea Party branch as disorganized as this one appears to be. We know that because of all the retracted and unretracted reports. Some of them are true! ERGO: This is all Palin's fault. She started it. So there. Posted by: jwb7605 at August 31, 2011 02:14 PM (rxez/) Posted by: Dave at August 31, 2011 02:14 PM (Xm1aB) 239
Here's the thing that gets me about this whole thing (wherever you stand on Palin): A lot of this "drama"--not just in scheduled appointments, but everywhere--is just fabricated.
So, now it appears that she's going to speak after all?Was there ever any truth to this story? Possibly not. But it will all go into the hopper with all the other trumped up BS as part of the perception of Palin. So even though we know that the media's assault on her was extreme, that she was vetted harder than the SCoaMF, that time and again these trumped up stories have turned up, well, trumped up and false--the perception created remains. Not just with Palin, of course. AGW leaps to mind as another instance where we know the media constantly misrepresents things to achieve an end, and is constantly proven to be wrong. Again, it doesn't even matter where you stand on AGW. It's the sum effect of someone constantly yelling something at you. It's not new, of course. I'm always finding out stuff that I believed was true growing up was total BS. Remember when--I think it was Iowahawk, maybe Frank J--did that little bit portraying violence done by media members in the way the media covers violence done by troops? I gotta believe politician/pundit schedules change. All the time. And that there's drama. I also gotta believe nobody gives a rat's ass most of the time. What that means is that when someone does call attention to it, we think it's unusual. Anybody got any stats? I dunno. I think this is nothing, like all the other nothings, but I also think it establishes a completely made-up "pattern". Posted by: moviegique at August 31, 2011 02:14 PM (kNN2d) 240

"the positive is that BO will have revealed his plan, in writing and the
republicans can have at it." Except his plan will be incredibly vague specifically to avoid criticism. That's been Obama's M.O. for a damn long time. He'll call for a commission or for hope or for the same crap he called for 100 times already while blasting partisanship. It's only for low info voters to see Obama is trying to do something. It's not going to be meant to actually do anything but be a show. "Although, since brian williams is the moderator, he will probably only discuss social issues during the debate anyway since, in his mind, the economy isn't a big issue," Absolutely. It's getting old, but I'm sure Perry will be asked about evolution and his religion and all manner of things other than the one thing on everyone's mind. ----------- " A lifelong commitment to conservative values and clarity of principles, off the top of my head. Posted by: arhooley at August 31, 2011 02:06 PM (3n2lK)" Some have raised the same little nit picks about Palin that we see now about Perry. It's possible to do this with anybody. Palin appointed a few moderates. Actually she governed fairly moderately (but well). She's not as conservative as Perry on spending, but I don't mean to bash her.Perry is no pure right winger, I realize. But things like 'he wrote a letter to Hillary asking her to remember farmers before her healthcare plan was revealed as horrible' is not a big ding. He's got a record that can actually be described as lifelong, too. It's unfair to compare him to someone who hasn't had even close to as many decisions and successes.Palin's one of the good guys, but she didn't run a state like Texas for a decade. Of course the few with a real record will also be the few who made mistakes here and there. The only way to totally avoid that is with an empty suit like Obama (we have a couple like that running, though Palin is not an empty suit). Posted by: Dustin at August 31, 2011 02:15 PM (fF625) 243

I suspect the MSM will be comparing the viewership of Obama's speech to the viewership of the GOP debate.
That way, they can sell to the low info voters that Obama is 5 times more popular than all GOP candidates combined, and convey the message that everyone else is liking Obama, so they should too. That kind of petty argument is a big part of Obama's appeal. Big stupid posters with no meaning beyond 'Obama is cool. Are you cool? If you are cool you like Obama like all the cool people.'. Anyway, we have real issues worth debating, and Obama is interfering. We can expect him to play hardball every step of the way, and should not take this election for granted just because he's such a failure at leadership. The country is in deep trouble intellectually right now. Obama WANTS anger and emotion to be the argument against him. He's got a better shot with that than with the more rational discussion of his plans vs our plans. He hopes to gin up tons of fear and agitation. He will constantly be acting like a punk. Expect to see more of his middle finger. Posted by: Dustin at August 31, 2011 02:22 PM (fF625) 251

That's bated breath, as in "abated" or held back or held. Posted by: Sphynx at August 31, 2011 02:22 PM (fEmj2) 252
The group has spent about $100,000 on the event for Palin and are thus
waiting "with baited breath" for an answer. An official press release will come out after Palin people give Crow final word. Unless you're a penguin or just ate sushi, you should be waiting with bated breath, not baited breath. Yeah, I know...this really adds to the discussion. O'Donnell was such a drag, that she almost cost Toomey his election. The O'Donnell ads were up in the Philly/Wilmington market. Toomey had to overcome a huge deficit in Philly and its suburbs as a result.
Anyone thinking it is a good idea to invite O'Donnell to anything should lose their position immediately. What a mistake that nomination was. Posted by: Dave in Fla at August 31, 2011 03:25 PM (9t6jP) 270

What if Bigfoot is a genetic hybrid createdby ancient astronauts from a distant galaxy usingthe basic genetic structure of Cro-Magnon? What if they can grow to bethirty feet tall and harbor the strength of five hundred very strong men? Was it these creaturesthat built the Great Pyramid of Giza? What if theyare currently thriving as a societywithintheMammoth Cave system? Are theyour friends? Are they our enemies, waiting for an attacksignal from Quetzcoatl, hovering in a ship capapable of travelling across galaxies?Would a baby Bigfoot's dick all be bigger than Milton Berle's dick?Questions like these make myhair stand up. The More I Think About It... The less I find fault with Palin. What was the Tea Party of America thinking? Exactly. Who is Ken Crow, anyway? Whether supporting McCain vs. Obama or O'Donnell vs. RINO/socialist, it was the proverbial holding the nose while voting for the lesser of two weevils. Once it's over, particularly after defeat, it's never again...let sleeping dogs lie. /especially deny I'm-not-a-witch a current Tea Party rally (of any sort) speaking engagement, or invitation to make her public re-appearance resurrection magic act. If she's a phoenix, she has to rise from her own ashes without a godfather Crow patronization. /which is why AZ shouldn't have fallen for McCain's "build the danged fence" re-election bid. It took McCain no time at all to attempt requiring vitamins and over the counter supplements and legal drugs be available only through prescription. Posted by: jwb7605 at August 31, 2011 02:42 PM (rxez/) How so? Honest question. Because I don't see anything in her which I feel qualifies her to be president, let alone a good president, certainly not more so than most everyone else in the GOP field. Note, "being a vociferous defender of conservative values" is not enough, otherwise we might as well nominate blowhards like Mark Levin or Sean Hannity as the GOP candidate. Christine O'Donnell needs to bow out gracefully. I think any further public appearances just do her harm. And it won't bother me if Palin doesn't run for POTUS. She does well as the prime cheerleader and I think that's where she belongs.

*shakes head* It hate this crap. Some of us females were fighting hard for our right to run in the tall grass with the big dogs loooong before Sarah Palin came into view. We fought hard. We didn't quit, no matter what. We didn't want to go all 'girly' and confirm what our detractors were eager to say about a woman's inability to do hard stuff..... And this shit is really unhelpful. And now Palin's faithful followers will grasp at whatever excuses they can to claim that this was "not her fault". Again. While refusing to see thatthis is exactly what the faithful followers of Obama do for him, when he refuses to take responsibility for the things that are his responsibility. If Sarah Palin caredat all for the people who adore her, she would not have been torturing them with her indecisiveness. If shereally ever truly was consideringgetting in this race, and she is as smart as peoplesay she is......then she should realize that being so indecisive is not a good reflection of her ability to be a good POTUS.For which decisiveness is a prerequisite. At this point, I hope she doesn't endorse any of the other candidates. None of them deserve to have her drama attached to them. Don't ever try to find out the actual truth. Just jump on the bandwagon because you don't like the person the story is about. I don't know what this guy was thinkin'. Christine O'Donnell was a very poor choice to invite to a Tea Party rally headlined by the Gov. She's a failed Senate candidate. What exactly does she have to offer this crowd, other than trying to sell her book. I'm glad Sarah Palin brought the hammer down. She's flexing her muscles, as she should. The O'Donnell camp, and this Tea Party organizer, felt the wrath of Sarah Palin. Lesson? Don't mess with this woman. By the way, I never believed that SP would announce at this event. She's going to want to be in control of her roll out. Not have it be in the hands of an amateur. It's going to be spectacular, no doubt. Still believe it will be in her beloved state of AK.
