Looks like that Dobies left ear got damaged somehow. It isn't the pretty ones that you really have to worry about.
The toughest and smartest dog I ever knew was a miniature collie (though about 1/2 again larger) mix named Brownie. He WAS brown and would sit quietly while his pal Fritz would entertain the patrons of a corner hangout but when people got rowdy it was Brownie that would dart in and take bites at the participants. Everyone liked Fritz but they respected Brownie. Good dog. Crossed over to Rainbow Bridge years ago. Still missed. Posted by: The Law of Entropy. So Captain America has gone emo? That's one of those statements that sounds deep and meaningful to people who don't think about them, because if you do think about them you realize it's stupid. You don't become angry for a purpose-- you become angry because something pisses you off. Unless you're a lefty, who selectively channels outrage in order to justify his or her own desires and prejudices. Selective emotion-- to me, anyway-- screams dishonesty. The Donald is making noise again. Loud noise. I still am not totally convinced this was a publicity stunt, an ego self stroke, or even a half hearted campaign. Mostly I think he likes the sound of his own voice and gets a kick out of stirring things up. Some kind of Media troll, lol. He claims to be serious this time (echo, echo echo) and says he will enter the prez contest if he does not like the Republican Candidate. WTF? Colossal ego and I guess you could throw in some audacity. There is a lot of speculation flying around about a third party candidate and now it is sounding like it vould become a self-fufilling prophesy. The voter pull would be from the right side, and help the left. A lot. Maybe straight to the White House. You know the MSM will pick up on this and run with it. After all, something like a third candidate would virtually assure their idol 4 more years. How do we discourage the Donald? Ideas? Posted by: Mister Money at July 30, 2011 10:44 PM (wN82N) 113

I was surprised at the previews before Captain America though. I mean, come on, it is safe to assume that a lot of younger kids will be seeing that movie, so perhaps it isn't the best damn place to do a trailer for "Contagion" I've had to calm the boy down about it several times over the last day.

Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillionSpending cuts of roughly $1 trillionSpecial committee to recommend cuts of $1.8 trillion (or whatever it takes to add up to the total of the debt ceiling increase)Committee must make recommendations before Thanksgiving recessIf Congress does not approve those cuts by late December, automatic across-the-board cuts go into effect, including cuts to Defense and Medicare. In other words, virtually the same as the Boehner deal in the actual cuts, which will likely be back-end loaded (we expect about $10-20 billion in 2012 cuts), but the Democrats get what they want in that it will not require a second debt ceiling hike before Obama's re-elecetion as $2.8 trillion should last well into 2013. As for "future cuts", well, that's easily what Congress is so very good at. Indefinite future cuts that is. Posted by: Guy Fawkes at July 30, 2011 11:10 PM (0f7gD) 196

First movie I saw that abused the hell out of those-type of descriptions was "And the Band Played On", an HBO movie based on the Randy Shiltz (sp?) book about the AIDS epidemic in San Fransisco. It was as if the movie producers made the movie out of the portions of the book that solely blamed the hospitals and "blood bank CEOs" for the spread of AIDS in the 1980s. What really amused me about that movie was how it "cleanly" it portrayed the decadence going on in the San Fran bathhouses, while in reality...yeah, I won't go there. Jack Kemp. If the GOP is serious about 2012, where is their modern day version of Jack? Sorry I just don't see it. If they are relying on an economy swirling the toilet and running another Country Club Republican then I predict Obama will win another term. I hope I am wrong, but at the very least I will never forget a person who not only talked the talk but walked the walk and we must never forget the people who politically paid the price. Yes, I expect to catch flak for his type of conservatism. But remember this, do you want to win in 2012? Then it behooves you to acknowledge what he laid down. Hopefully never. Video games never translate well to screen because video games are meant to be played, not watched (although many video games have awesome cinematics that surpass a lot of movies these days, IMHO). David Jaffe, the executive producer for GoW1 and 2, mentioned in an interview that there was a script for GoW somewhere and that David thought Djimon Hounsou (Juba from "Gladiator") would make a good Kratos for the big screen. *shrugs*. But I prefer that GoW would never become a movie as Kratos is already too over-exposed and a movie would just destroy the character, as it would never meet the fan-boys high expectations. And for the love of God, if a GoW movie is ever green-lighted, DO NOT LET Uwe Boll get his hands on it. Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at July 30, 2011 11:27 PM (c0A3e) 222

My take on that deal is Jack was a Company Man. The GOP knew he would step up when asked, even though Jack Kemps financial plans totally contradicted Bob Dole (a Country Club Repub). Jack did exactly as planned and his political career was toast after that. Fast forward to the RINO John McCain and how Gov. Sarah Palin stepped up to save his ass. History repeats itself. Seems the GOP is stuck on stupid and willingly sacrifices it's best because "it's their turn" to be president, instead of what is best for the country. "Debt ceiling increase of up to $2.8 trillion"
2.8 trillion ought to be enough to get through 2012, so I think we blinked. Having cuts that are automatic would also prevent the Dems from having to vote on it while allowing them to demagogue some alternative (of course, it would prevent us from having to vote on Medicare cuts as well). It's really not bad in the grand scheme of things--no tax cuts and we're talking about trillion dollar cuts now as opposed to a few billion--but since we were fighting over six vs. 18 months, it would be a win for the Dems there. It's late, I'm tired, I have no energy to read any of the no doubt fascinating and insightful 228 comments, I'm on a slow rural connection, and can't see the videos. The world is doomed. We rent rides to the space station from the Russians, the budget is a pop bottle rocket (the kind that explode), Dick Milhouse O'Bluffy is STILL pResident, communism is rampant, there's no beer in the fridge, we're losing Iraq and Afghanistan and Libya but about to go to war with Iran while the imminent Mexican invasion (h/t Ann Barnhardt) is timed to coincide with the multi-city terrorist nuking (see.. uh...) and the Yellowstone volcano, and Mr Jesus still hasn't been back to visit us, BUT...
NOW THERE'S A REAL CRISIS! I bought a bag of ordinary Oreo cookies tonight and the filling.. the filling was about HALF there!! Win The Future? Is nothing sacred? It was, like, twice the thickness of my big toenail. Maybe the cookies were thinner, too, but who cares, that would be a good thing. Is this a plot to force us to buy double-stuft just to get normal stuff? Is this Michelle Obama's latest plan to screw dietary happiness? It wasn't even worth twisting them apart and scraping the filling out. It's not like I can go out and buy Hydrox, y'know? (You don't know? I feel so old!) Maybe I just got a bum bag. Instance is not pattern. But Nabisco, I'm watching you! That is all. Good night. Posted by: A Mindful Webworker at July 30, 2011 11:57 PM (mJp7S) 287

If they froze spending at today's levels for 10 years, the CBO would score that as a $9.5T cut. Thus, any cut less than $9.5T is just a cut in the speed of increase.
There are about 330 million people in the US. Budget deficits are financed by bonds, which are -- in turn -- backed by promises to repay from tax revenue. For every $1T deficit, about $3,000 is added to the amount promised to be repaid by each individual citizen.....be they young, old, infirm, working, unemployed, or infants. You currently owe $14.3T / 330M, or about $45,000. Last year, it was $40K. Next year, looks like it'll be $50K. Posted by: cthulhu at July 31, 2011 12:33 AM (kaalw) 388

I've been bothered more by teenagers and adults, including middle aged people who talk all the way through movies. I used to go once a week, now go once in a while. The theater manager once even told me that I would be wise to not come on a Friday night. He said they try to control it, but when an employee walks in people stop, then start up when they leave. Cowboys and Aliens: A Review1. Good movie. Sifty Approved: No sucker punches and no liberal bullshit.8/10 Hippie Punches Men are men. Women are happy about it. No moral equivalency with the aliens. No agonizing navel gazing. Preachers talk about God and people listen without laughing. Guns are not demonized. Dogs and kids and family are cherished and respected. Nobody apologizes for who they are. I won't spoil anything for you, but this is one of the most un-PC movies I have seen ever. Go see it so they'll make more like this. Daniel Craig: loses a little of his short-man snottiness and plays a good knock-off of Steve McQueen. Not perfect, but you can kinda see Steve McQueen in the background at times nodding his head. Harrison Ford: As awesome as I have seen him in years. The biggest acting stretch I've seen him make since Regarding Henry. Real acting and real emotion. You'll love him, you'll hate him, you'll respect him, and you'll want to drink beers with him. Freshest, most original-yet familiar new character I've seen in movies since, well, Han Solo. Special effects are good. Get to see plenty of the bad guys. Plenty of action of many types. No grinding, forced bullshit love story that slows everything down. There is one disturbing part that made me actually have nightmares last night. Be ready for it. Suffice it to say that you will hate these fuckin aliens so bad you will want to kill some yourself. It's a telescope, an 8" dobsonian. She got to see a

The view is a bit tiny (since I lack tracking motors I have to keep it on lower magnification) but the view is damn-near photographic right through the scope. Just Netflixed a PBS documentary on the Greely Expedition. Incredible story, very well-produced. Don't mind admitting I knew absolutely nothing about this sub-chapter of history.
Anyway, as the hour-long doc is wrapping up and I'm thinking "wow, that was GREAT!" comes the sucker punch: an interviewee brightly explains how the atmospheric data Greely's expedition collected, that dozens of his men gave their lives for, and that lay hidden away somewhere for over a century, is now being used to study the effects of global warming and man's impact on the climate. That plot was stupid in the 4th original Planet of the Apes movie, although having the apes more integrated into human society because all the cats and dogs died and thus easier to forment insurrection was more plausible than the Island of Dr. Moreau-ish plot in this upcoming movie. Couldn't the humans take the Super Monkey Serum and catch back up with the monkeys? Stop making sense! Or can't the humans just kill off the lead scientist that made the SMS, thus preventing any more SMS from being made? /Hated that movie flaw in Captain America. *spoiler* Just because the lead scientist was assassinated doesn't meant that you can't make more of the Super Soldier Serum. Speaking of POTA, there was an interesting remake script floating around that was kind of like a reverse version of Escape From The Planet of the Apes (talking humans trapped in a high tech ape society, had an ape titty bar scene and everything). The Marky Mark/Tim Burton one got green-lit instead.

No tights. Bad things happen in tights. I once went to LA county jail in red velvet tights. Do Not Want. Just find one that runs a few weekends, go the first weekend in street clothes. It's like a carnival full of geeks and boobehs and drunks and drunk geeks and drunk boobehs and horses and bad actors doing skits. It is not to be taken too seriously. It is, however, a great place to meet easy-going relaxed women of all ages and types who you know are out to have a good time. Just the fact that they are there means they know how to be silly and fun. If they are dressed up, you already know they have an imagination and are willing to let their hair down in public. And women get super horny in a bodice and skirts. That science is settled. Posted by: sifty at July 31, 2011 01:57 AM (ECjvn) 548

Yeah, the only problem is how far out from the city it's held. Limits the time you can spend out there since you're always factoring in how long it will take to get home. We've never gotten to see the jousting, even though we've tried. Maybe one of these days. Never miss the raptor show, though. Best part of the day, aside from shopping.
