Global Warming Cultists: Observational Evidence Is For Homos

Great catch by ArthurK. in the Headlines.

Empirical evidence? Observation? Measurements? Refining models to comport with observed fact rather than observed fact to model?

That's what we call "Old Science," grandpa.

You just don't get my generation, old man.

In short, the day lined up Phil Jones, oceanographer Andrew Watson, and physicist Mike Lockwood, the latter to argue that the sun couldn't possibly have caused recent warming. He was followed by the most impressive presentation from Henrik Svensmark, whose presentation stood out head and shoulders above anyone else. Why? For two reasons. The correlations he shows are remarkable, and don't need curve fitting, or funky statistical tricks. And he has advanced a mechanism, using empirical science, to explain them. At the other end of the scale, by way of contrast, the Met's principle research scientist John Mitchell told us:

"People underestimate the power of models. Observational evidence is not very useful," adding, "Our approach is not entirely empirical."

Yes, you could say that.

In related news, you will be absorbed into The Body.

I'm not sure that's really a good analogy but I couldn't think of the Star Trek episode I actually meant to think of.

29 When I was teaching a class in South Korea, the topic was global warming. I asked the students, in a longish manner, what should be done with people that don't believe in global warming.
There was a knock at the door.
My Canadian co-worker, a very nice girl, 24, fresh out of university with an English degree, came in and said she could hear me in the next room and should I be telling the students such things like 'Many people don't believe in global warming.' I told her I was making a point, she said it seemed like a lecture. I stopped, quite upset, actually thought for a moment, decided it wasn't worth it and said fine, whatever.
I ended the topic quickly by asking the students what should happen to people who don't believe in global warming. 'Harley' blurts out 'Kill themm!' in a joking tone.
The incident still pisses me off. I still keep in contact. But still. Powerful religion...

35 Svensmark is the cosmic rays-clouds guy I linked here before. Our position in the galaxy affects climate. Unlike CO2, the correlations are actually strong. CERN is looking into the physics with early positive results. As opposed to CO2 warming the troposphere which has never been empirically verified.

38 Were the "clingers?" I have always been open to "global warming"

*They refuse or get antsy to even acknowledge the suns possible role, makes me skeptical.

*That when you show them that huge statist authoritarian multi-billion dollar boondoggles wont budge things even .01% using their own models and they don't care, that makes me skeptical.

*That they personally fly/travel/large homes/central air in such a way to say they don't care one bit about their own carbon output, makes me skeptical.

*they get antsy if you point out that
- CO2 is .04-% of atmosphere
-Argon is .9+% "
-Oxygen 20.7% "

*That CO2 levels waxed and waned much much higher lower long before humans were around they get antsy.

*They have pets but complain about your midsized car, which makes a fraction of the carbon?

Even after all that being repeated over and over I am still open to Global Warming being a threat, but I do wonder if they still beleive?

77 CO2 is about 390ppm of the atmosphere, increasing2ppm every year.

Now let's not talk about retarded scientists who would conclude that it'll be increasing at 2ppm every year for all eternity, let's assume that happens.

In 200 years, the CO2 would double.

That's (oh, let's round off) 800ppm.

Here's what that means: If you have a greenhouse with 1,000,000 panels, the "greenhouse effect" that the CO2 would produce is equivalent of that greenhouse with 999,200 of the panels smashed out.

I don't care what kind of panels you have, that ain't producing a greenhouse effect.

103 The whole article is worth a read, even if it is a bit long. It's a summary of an all-day scientific meeting between global warmists (including some of the most famous - and infamous - names in that camp) and skeptics of global warming, reportedly in pretty close to 50/50 balance in attendance. I don't know of any previous global-warming meeting where that has happened. The fact that 'warmers' and 'skeptics' actually spent a day together without any felonies being committed is itself rather remarkable, and kudos to the organizers for pulling off a meeting like that.
A couple takeaways:
- The two sides in the meeting had a great deal of trouble even agreeing on the right science to do, let alone the possible interpretations of the science:
On the science, there was little disagreement over the basics, such as the physical properties of CO2, but the degree to which it drives the larger climate was greatly disputed, because the larger system remains a mystery

Even the basics of how different clouds affect temperature is guesswork

The telltale signature of greenhouse gas warming should be warming at the surface and in the troposphere, but not the upper stratosphere. It's even been suggested that carbon taxes should reflect the tropospheric temperature anomaly, rather than surface production. But while the models predict such telltale warming, the observational evidence shows it isn't there. More recently it has been cooling.

- John Mitchell, the conferee who uttered the pull quote about the uselessness of empirical data, sounds likeone arrogant sumbitch. He's also the one who, according to the article,
was review editor of Chapter 5 of the IPCC's most recent report (AR4) but hasn't been able to meet FOIA requests, despite the IPCC's pledge to keep all written expert comments on record for five years. "For my own part, I have not kept any working papers. There is no requirement to do so, given the extensive documentation already available from IPCC".
Sniff. So there, peasant. He also used chaos theory to support his belief in the power of models. But that's bassackwards: the whole field of chaos arose from an otherwise goodmeteorological computer model that spat out nonsense because the data fed into it hadn't been precise enough. Any computer model is only as good as the inputs built into it. How does Mitchell know he has the right ones, that they're weighted correctly, and that they're of the appropriate precision? (oh yeah ... that all must be in the work papers he doesn't have.) I hope someone from the skeptic side called him on this.

- The work now being done on how cosmic-ray muons seed cloud development is fascinating. It may turn out to show that an increase in the sun's brightness actually lowers the average temperature of the earth since more solar radiation -> more cosmic rays from the sun -> more ionization in the earth's upper atmosphere -> more cloud 'nucleation' (seeding) -> more clouds -> lower temps. Stay tuned on this one. Better yet: build your own cosmic ray muon detector and join the fun!

126 Guys, be careful making arguments based on atmospheric concentrations. They allow the warmies to dismiss you if you use them uncritically.

Shiggz, #38: "*they get antsy if you point out that
- CO2 is .04-% of atmosphere
-Argon is .9+%
-Oxygen 20.7% "

AmishDude, #77: "There is far far far more Argon in the atmosphere and people don't even know what Argon is."

Both of you are right, but argon doesn't absorb infrared because it consists of single atoms. Oxygen doesn't, because O2 can't change its dipole moment no matter how you stretch it. (Ditto for N2, nearly 80% of the atmosphere.)

So when the overwhelming majority of the atmosphere doesn't absorb infrared radiation, it's not absurd on the face of it to say that CO2, which sure does, could have a major effect if it went from 240ppm to 390ppm.

The more interesting objection, as some here have pointed out, is that water vapor absorbs IR like all hell, and is much more abundant than CO2. So if the earth warms, do we get more water vapor, and then more warming? Or do we get more clouds, less light coming through, and a tendency toward less warming?

The fact that models don't have anything like a consensus on the balance between these is a big weakness in AGW predictions. As is the fact that the more militant boosters of the theory blame everything, but everything, on it.

So when a warmy confronts you with something they consider clinching proof, and demand, "What else could it be?" remember this answer: It could be anything in the world that you don't understand. In this case, maybe anything in the solar system.

152 I have a Masters in Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation.
That a "scientist" could actually say that a model is more useful than empirical data is a perversion of the field. His degrees should be revoked by the grantors.
The first thing we learn about a model is that it is an approximation of reality. Some are better approximations than others. Your mileage may vary...
That this man would expect us to believe that a model of this planet's climate is valid, given the complexities involved, is beyond ludicrous. He has in fact become a priest, preaching the faith.
Another good question to ask warmies is how many means of heat transfer exist, and how many do climate models take into account?
There are four, but most models only take radiation into account. And then there's the cloud cover and water vapor factors that these models don't even begin to address.
You have come to the same conclusion; I'm only stating the scientific basis for your correct conclusions.
AGW is as faith-based as any religion, and it's unfortunate that "scientists" have become High Priests" for this religion.
