Obama's Remarks: I Am Boldly Authorizing The Next President To Deal With This Problem, And In Futherance of This Daring Strategy, I Am Also Punting To a New Commission To Be Named Later
PS I really want to raise taxes

First of all, he's proposing less deficit reduction than Ryan. $4.4 trillion versus $4 trillion in the Obama plan. And here's the cute thing: Obama is suddenly talking about 12 year windows, instead of the standard 10, as Ryan did.

So he chose 12 years, probably because he wanted to get the number up to the $4 trillion range.

Further, Obama's plan as far as Medicare consists, as far as I can tell, merely ordering the agency to keep spending at no greater than a .5 or 1% rate of growth.

Um, look, this is his same idea with "bending the curve" with Medicare; there he stole a half trillion from the program to pay for the health care of other people, and then simply asserted that stealing the money from the program would force costs down such that nothing would be lost.

1, this is silly, because the government is what you call a soft touch on these matters. Cost discipline gets imposed by the end-user. It will not be imposed by a government which desperately needs the votes of the end user.

Without actually suggesting any concrete ways to reduce Medicare's costs, he just basically says "I will magically make it cost less."

2, if stealing $500 billion from Medicare would magically force costs down so that no user experiences a net reduction in actual services, why should Ryan's proposal not have a similar property? Furthermore, Ryan's plan at least has a plausible mechanism by which it is possible to imagine prices being forced down (a private insurer, probably requiring higher co-pays and deductibles, which in turn makes the end-user more cost-sensitive and drives down price where it has to be driven down-- at the actual point of sale, not weeks afterwards when Medicare sends out a check for services already rendered.

3, I seem to notice him saying that if his proposed order to reduce Medicare costs does not reduce costs (which it won't, same as it didn't with ObamaCare -- premiums are going up, not down) by the year 2023, then, get this, he will authorize "the Commission" (I think the Medicare trustees or something) to propose further means of reducing costs.

Get that? If, in 12 years, his plan hasn't worked yet, he'll actually call for a third-party blue-ribbon commission to propose some more changes.

Oh, and guess what? His big idea for closing the deficit is 1 cutting defense spending and 2 increasing taxes.

Bonus: He also says that if, in 2014, two years after the next election, the CBO's projection doesn't show "the share of the deficit as a fraction of GDP" falling (note that is a lenient way to view it), he is willing to go so far as authorizing the President and Congress to consider further "spending cuts" and "spending reductions."

What?

Get that? If what he's doing (which is nothing) doesn't work, he will reconvene two years post-election to kick it around some more.

I should note that the New Democratic Style Guide is to refer to any typical tax deductions as "tax expenditures" and hence, eliminating those (and thereby increasing taxes) is no longer a "tax increase," but a "spending reduction."

That's the new speak, man. Better get used to it.

"A Balanced Approach:" 12 year window, huh?

Obama's 12-yr plan: tax hikes now, more spending now, and then spending cuts in the last 5 years.

Yup, tax increases for 7 years and promise we'll start cutting spending like a mofo those last five years!!!!11! Swearsies!!!

Thanks to soothsayer for that.

Oh, he says that we can't cut spending right now because of this precarious recovery we supposedly have; we don't want to disrupt that.

But the tax increases? Oh, they won't fuss no one.

Another bonus: At the end of the speech, the bullshitty "uplift" part, he used the word "quagmire," but he pronounced it, en francais, I guess, as "quogmire."

Like, we're in a quogmire in Pokistohn.

Beat me to it.

So it's worse of a non-plan "plan" than the Ryan plan. The Ryan plan is for 10 years (read: 5 Congresses and at least two presidents) out. For more deficit reduction. Without taxes.

If the Republicans would be willing to actually challenge the idiot-in-chief, this is such a slow, hanging, curve there is no excuse for them not to hit it out of the park. Just say it that way: "The President offered less debt reduction over more time with an increase in taxes."

21 On the Budget Comm.'s Path to Prosperity:

"One vision has been championed by Republicans in the House of
Representatives and embraced by several of their party’s presidential
candidates. It’s a plan that aims to reduce our deficit by $4 trillion
over the next ten years, and one that addresses the challenge of
Medicare and Medicaid in the years after that.

Those are both worthy goals for us to achieve. But the way this
plan
achieves those goals would lead to a fundamentally different America
than the one we’ve known throughout most of our history."

came close to uttering that their vision of our country is unAmerican. The speech also seemed personal whenever he displayed passive-aggressive anger towards the Republicans.

I'll be looking to see what the reaction is out of the House once they finish work on defunding this ObamaCare slush fund, since Obama was mainly taking-aim at them.

“The President made it absolutely clear today that Democrats will cling
bitterly to deficit spending until our nation is bankrupt. After
offering an unserious budget just a few months ago, the President
offered new platitudes but the same old policies. He’s still pushing for
trillion dollar tax increases that would destroy jobs and cripple our
economy. He still wants to add trillions in new spending to our $14
trillion mountain of debt without a credible plan to ever balance the
budget. This failed tax spend Democrat agenda stands in stark
contrast to the serious and detailed plans that Republicans have offered
to save entitlement programs before they go bankrupt, cut wasteful
Washington spending, and reform our tax code so our economy can grow and
create jobs. The President admitted we have a spending problem, but his
solution is always the same: spend more, tax more, borrow more.
Americans have rejected this failed Democrat spending agenda, and
Republicans will continue to lead the way back to American prosperity.”

3. write several bills with conservative desire legislation and attach increased debt ceiling to each. Let Reid and Obama pick which one to agree to.

"...I thought it was a breathtaking tour de force of dishonesty and
tendentiousness for all the reasons covered around here. It was also
just weird and annoying. A small gripe: he keeps saying 'win the future'
like it’s a phrase A) everybody understands and B) everyone has a
positive reaction to. Neither is the case.

More substantially, Obama’s speech was just plain reactionary. It was an
amazing about face for a guy who ran in 2008 on a 'yes we can' message
of fundamentally “transforming” America. Now the philosophical thrust of
his approach is that we must not change the America we 'grew up with.'
Uh ok. I guess his 2012 slogan will be 'Let’s All Go Down With the Ship —
Together!' "

87 10 year program, 12 year program, doesn't matter. No government promise to cut spending "down the road" has ever been kept. It doesn't matter who is doing the promising, it simply will not happen.

That is why I am waiting on what this 2012 budget will be, not 2013 or down the road. I want to see what 2012 is. If we do not do "real cuts" and major cuts it is all BS.

As for Obama, I hope nobody expected anything other than a pack of lies. I just wish the Republicans would call him on it. The Dems did 8 years (and still counting) of "Bush lied" when Bush never told a single lie. Obama lies every time he opens his mouth. And the only time a Republican called him on it the Party wanted to strangle him.

well they have million dollar tax free pensions. Regular private sector people don't come anywhere near that. In fact many can't even fund their pensions and he's given private sector the ability to stop funding pensions. So the teachers are the rich and they should be taxed on those pensions cause they got them on my back and every other NYer's back and they don't' deserve them, our school system was once the first in the nation and they have ruined the NY School System.

Workhouses where a nimble-fingered child sits at his sewing machine, coughing a bloody-tinged tubercular froth into the handkerchief his mother gave him before being sent to the penal colony for stealing an apple core from a Park Avenue rubbish bin...

A retarded boy mopping his sweat-stained brow, then lowering his broad, rounded shoulder to the wheel, powering the belt-driven ceiling fans on a plantation porch as condensation lazily zigzags down the side of my sterling silver mint julep cup...

So I rushed over to read Paul Ryan's budget plan -

WHAT? WE'RE NOT DOING THAT?!

183 The president speaks, says very little
It was rather embarrassing in what it did offer: negotiations with Joe Biden, more defense cuts and taxes on the rich. How utterly trite. You knew he was going nowhere by the fist half of his speech which was a condescending review of how we spilled so much ink:

But after Democrats and Republicans committed to fiscal discipline
during the 1990s, we lost our way in the decade that followed. We
increased spending dramatically for two wars and an expensive
prescription-drug program — but we didn’t pay for any of this new
spending. Instead, we made the problem worse with trillions of dollars
in unpaid-for tax cuts — tax cuts that went to every millionaire and
billionaire in the country; tax cuts that will force us to borrow an
average of $500 billion every year over the next decade.

He left out the part in which he spent trillions in his first two years. He mostly wants us to know it’s not his fault:

When I took office, our projected deficit was more than $1 trillion.
On top of that, we faced a terrible financial crisis and a recession
that, like most recessions, led us to temporarily borrow even more. In
this case, we took a series of emergency steps that saved millions of
jobs, kept credit flowing, and provided working families extra money in
their pockets. It was the right thing to do, but these steps were
expensive, and added to our deficits in the short term.

194 Obama Calls For Automatic Tax Increases If Deficit Isn’t CurbedIn anticipation of the unlikelihood of reaching a deal if Republicans
hold firm to a no-tax stance, Obama’s plan calls for a “debt fail-safe”
mechanism that would kick in on October 1, 2013, if the deficit is not
declining as a percentage of the gross domestic product by then.
Significantly, this fail-safe would trigger not only across-the-board
spending cuts (with Social Security, Medicare and certain programs for
the poor exempted) but also an automatic tax hike through reductions in
“spending through the tax code”—meaning tax expenditures.
The tax component is in there, a senior administration official said in
a briefing, “to provide the appropriate incentive for everyone to act.”

The problem with the "Let's take away the teachers' pensions" is that those plans work differently state-by-state and are, indeed, state programs. So, unless USSD's wife is, specifically, an NY Teacher, your statement about "million dollar, untaxed" pensions is probably incorrect.

Here in TX, you get some percent (80, maybe?) of the average of your 3 highest paid years. For life. And you're still allowed to purchase insurance from the Teachers Retirement System health plan. I do not believe that income is un-taxed, either.

However, the point does, indeed, remain that public sector employees' retirement benefits are, in general, far too generous, and good place to start balancing our budgets would be with those retirement benefits.

214 “unfunded tax cuts” is akin to the pay-go legerdermaine, where they just ignore it when it’s inconvenient...
This requires pushback, for sure. We can’t allow them to hijack the language to cement the notion that somehow all the money in our economy is property of the government, and they graciously decide how much to allow us to keep.
We have to demand an explanation, along the lines of a simple question: “Jay Carney, can you explain what the President means, what is the difference between a ‘funded’ and ‘unfunded’ tax cut?”
Because, as Jeff at Protein Wisdomalways notes, this is a question of twisting the language to suit a propagandistic purpose. But in this case it provides an excellent point of departure for a larger discussion on liberty in general. If people agree that the government can’t decide what one is allowed to keep of one’s earnings, then it wouldn’t be too great a leap to proving to them that their rights are a function of their being, and not bestowed on them by the government.
But, then, I’m a racist a priori, I guess, for not automatically swooning over ObaMao’s speecifying.

It is an intentional lie (if one can term a nonsensical phrase a "lie" - though we know what the retard means) that shows nothing but contempt for America and the American governmental organization. Displays of contempt for our nation and our institutions is impeachable, as it goes against the whole "protect and defend the Constitution" clause of the oath.

Of course, the GOP has let the Indonesian get away with calling welfare checks dispensed by the IRS "tax cuts" so they almost encouraged the America-hater to jump to this new level of contemptuous verbiage.

“President Obama’s proposals are too little, too late. Instead of supporting spending cuts that lead to real deficit reduction and true reform of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, the President dug deep into his liberal playbook for ‘solutions’ highlighted by higher taxes. With over 20 million people who are unemployed or who have stopped looking for work, the last thing we should be doing is raising taxes on job-creators, entrepreneurs, and small business owners across America.”

Screw the detailed rebuttals! I'll stand with the person who calls this post turtle a damned fool, ignorant poser, pansie-assed nancy-boy who's never lifted his hand to do a damned thing in his life, a socialist commie, half whiterace-bater, a hypocrite, a liar, and a disgrace to the office of the president! Where's the GOP version of Charlie Sheen...less the coke and women, of course. Screw the gentile wordsmithing. I want to see a GOP warlock let lose with aflaming torpedo of truth!

241 Here's my "Roadmap" on steroids

Eliminate:

Dept of Education
Dept of Energy
Dept of Labor
Dept of Agriculture
Dept of Homeland Security
Dept of HHS
Dept of Transportation
Dept of HUD

Defund the EPA, OSHA, FDA, USDA, etc.

Suspend
Medicare. Any senior who can afford it can buy insurance, otherwise
they get vouchers to do the same.

Stop Social Security. Any senior who
needs income that badly can apply for charity (see below).

Stop Medicaid. Offer insurance vouchers pending drug tests.

Stop welfare. Offer dollar-for-dollar tax credits to charities to help support indigent people who are worthy!

End food stamps, rent subsidies, and a zillion other forms of wealth transfer.

Cut regulations by 2/3! Drill baby drill! Watch our economy grow again!

245 3, I seem to notice him saying that if his proposed order to reduce Medicare costs does not reduce costs (which it won't, same as it didn't with ObamaCare -- premiums are going up, not down) by the year 2023, then, get this, he will authorize "the Commission" (I think the Medicare trustees or something) to propose further means of reducing costs.

I'm no math whiz.... but it kinda sounds like Obama expects to be in office for a lot longer than the 2-term Presidential limit allows.
But I'm told their are like 53 states or something, so what do I know?

@65 I quit paying into my 401(k) 3 years ago, and could not be happier,
as any shared plan with the govt is a plan which can be compromised.
One of these days I am going to take the penalty and pull my money out
of my IRA, too. It is better to have -10% then have it absorbed into
SS. This is the way he will shore up SS, he just can't say it yet, but
the liberals cannot take money that has no strings attached to the
government away, as easily.

255 You really get what you pay for with the Rosetta stone languagecourses . If you’re looking for other benefits, consider that fact that you don’t have to commute to college in order to learn a foreign language. Rosetta stone’s lack of compatibility with PDA’s is not a very serious drawback, especially if you don’t want to drive or walk to school anyway. If you intend to study a language entirely at home, then Rosetta stone is the best alternative to sitting in a class room. Another benefit of utilizing this powerful language learning tool is in preparation for a college course. You can use the software to learn the language and then fly through your college course, get a letter A grade, and apply the credits toward a degree or certificate. I think you will have interests to see rosetta stone discount
