Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Jonathan Alter Is Pretty Excited About How Obama Can Profit From AZ ShootingUnderlying subtext...Imagine how awesome it would have been for Obama if only Giffords had died! President Obama is off to a good start in his handling of what the networks are now calling “The Tragedy in Tucson.” The moment of silence he asked for on Monday at 11 a.m.—resonant for older Americans of the exact hour on November 11 each year that the World War I Armistice was once observed—is an appropriate expression of what we need right now: Less Noise. But silence will not be enough. This horrific event offers the president a chance to show leadership qualities that he’s inexplicably hidden away in some blind trust. The shootings and the resulting debate over the climate of incivility play to his strengths as a calm and rational leader. Just as Bill Clinton’s response to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings helped him recover from his defeat in the 1994 midterms, so this episode may help Obama change—at least in the short term--the trajectory of American politics. ..Whether or not he attends the funerals for the Tucson victims, Obama’s big chance to lead will come in his State of the Union address on January 25. He can both to speak to the moment thematically and confront the substantive concerns raised by the tragedy. Conservatives like to argue that these are isolated incidents carried out by lunatics and therefore carry no big lessons (unless the perpetrator is Muslim, in which case it’s terrorism); liberals view them as opportunities to address various social ills. Obama is in the latter category and should act accordingly. “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” Rahm Emanuel famously said in 2008. The same goes for a shooting spree that gravely wounds a beloved congresswoman. Congress won’t enact gun control, as it did in the wake of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, but perhaps something positive can come from this.Yeah, those stupid conservatives, trying to draw bigger lessons from the actions connected to and motivated by the world wide movement we are at war with. Apparently we need to learn from individual crackpots whose anger toward their target predates the emergence of the individual and groups liberals blame. Don't forget, this is exactly the kind of thing some liberals were saying Obama was going to need to rebound politically. It's all so ghoulish and dishonest. Here's my modest proposal, if conservatives are responsible for the attack on Giffords then from this moment forward I am blaming liberals and every elected Democrat for every sexual attack in this country. When conservatives say we want to tone down the hyper-sexualization of society, especially children, we are called prudes who want to legislate what happens in people's bedrooms. Well, Democrats by your own logic you know own responsibility for every rape and sex crime in this country. Added: Aside from the death and injuries, the worst part of this story is how the left is dragging the right into their swamp mentality. All over righty blogs on Saturday the first reactions I was were calls for prayer and support for the victims. On the left it was to blame the right. Since Saturday the constant fact free frenzy has only gotten worse. In a better world, we'd recognize this attack for what it is but because the left immediate politicized it with a wanton disregard for the truth, here we are having to fight back in the nastiest ways imaginable. In my defense I'll quote Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
Lefty Democrat murders Republican Judge, child. Conservative Democrat and others wounded.

Is it clear now why I view the Left as subhuman? People have died because one of THEIRS went off the rails (again), and the only response they're capable of is to try to use the tragedy as a Stalinist cudgel against dissent over their utopian plans.

And there’s a huge contrast in the media. Listen to Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann, and you’ll hear a lot of caustic remarks and mockery aimed at Republicans. But you won’t hear jokes about shooting government officials or beheading a journalist at The Washington Post. Listen to Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly, and you will.
I don’t listen to any of these folks regularly, but “shooting government officials or beheading a journalist” ? This is Jayson Blair territory. I demand that Krugman give citations. from thechollajumps.wordpress:
Jared Loughner is a product of Sheriff Dupnik’s office with 22 comments 29 Votes This is the report that Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has been dreading since the tragic event on Saturday January 8. The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented it. He needs to step up and start apologizing to the families of the victims instead of spinning this event to serve his own political agenda. Jared Loughner, pronounced by the Sheriff as Lock-ner, saying it was the Polish pronunciation. Of course he meant Scott or Irish but that isn’t the point. The point is he and his office have had previous contact with the alleged assailant in the past and that is how he knows how to pronounce the name. Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation. My sympathies and my heart goes out to her and the rest of Mr. Loughner’s family. This tragedy must be tearing them up inside wondering if they had done the right things in trying to manage Jared’s obvious mental instability. Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. Perhaps with a felony conviction he would never have been able to lawfully by the Glock 9mm Model 19 that he used to strike down the lives of six people and decimate 14 more. This was not an act of politics. This was an act of a mentally disturbed young man hell bent on getting his 15 minutes of infamy. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately. This tragedy leads right back to Sherriff Dupnik and all the spin in the world is not going to change that fact. Posted by: phoenixgirl at January 10, 2011 12:04 PM (eOXTH) 21

Thanks to the MFM and the libtards, we constantly (as a nation) lose focus on who the real enemy is.
This country won't wake up until Islamo-fascists plant a nuke in DC and declare unequivocally that they were responsible for it.. And even then, I suspect the MFM will attempt to paint it as right-wing malitia's trying the frame the poor peace-loving Muslims. Until then, Sarah Palin and all other conservatives are the enemy.. And if and when Barry gets his "serious crisis", we will no doubt find him sucking his thumb in the bunker 20 floors below the White House. I had been wondering why Pima Co. S.O. had not been trying to get an involuntary committal on this lunatic. If the families of the murdered and the survival victims can get a person or two previously threatened by Loughner to confirm that they had been told not to file charges, Pima County is going to have a huge wrongful-death case on their hands. Evidence/Motive (you know this will be scanty as I am making this up.) 1) Shooter was sort of left-wing. Communist manifesto. pot-smoker. 2) Target was not Nancy Pelosi, or some actual object of hate on the right, but some local Blue Dog Democrat who supports gun rights and made Daily Kos upset for her heresy. I mean, if you had to take out one of your own party for evil, twisted political gain, you'd take out the most RINO of RINO people. From an article early in the news cycle: http://tinyurl.com/27hamen Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik would not confirm Loughner is the suspected shooter. He said the person arrested for the shooting is uninjured and uncooperative. The suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers, but the threats weren't against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Dupnik said. The suspect is unstable, Dupnik said, but the sheriff would not say he is "insane."Emphasis mine...... Posted by: fixerupper at January 10, 2011 12:35 PM (J5Hcw) 97

Romeo13@74,
Yeah, it is a bit unsavory that only select individuals are being considered. A 9-yr old child was killed which is, of course, tragic. But so are the deaths of, so far, five other individuals. No one will remember anything except the assassin, the Congresswoman, and possibly the Judge. All the deaths were equally tragic except, according to a hierarchy of importance, only some were worthy of a media frenzy. Most victims are used just like props in an action movie. There's so much bias and so many blinders on that I can't believe we ever gave the free press special consideration. The theory of it is infinitely better than the practice. I believe that Truman and Grant both made up there middle initial when they joined the service.
Truman's middle name, I believe, is actually the letter "S"-- no period initially, although he used it on official documents. Story is that both his grandfathers, both of whom had names beginning with S, wanted to be the namesake. So his mother told them both to STFU and just plopped the "S" there on behalf of both. Conservatives like to argue that these are isolated incidents carried
out by lunatics and therefore carry no big lessons (unless the perpetrator is Muslim, in which case it’s terrorism) Yes, Mr. Alter, two incidents (AZ and OK City, the only incidents cited as proof of this wave of conservative violence), 16 years apart, conducted by guys whose politics appear to be, roughly speaking "nutjob", with talking points drawn from the (mainstream-ish) left and (marginalized fringe) right are "isolated incidents," with no big lessons other than "some dudes are crazy". A thousand or so incidents conducted by guys yelling Allahu Akbar? That's kind of a "pattern". Posted by: Brendan at January 10, 2011 12:59 PM (saRwI) 151
Alter's advise to Obama is the worst possible ... for Dems. If Obama uses the State of the Union and this tragedy to score political points, he will effectively be holding up a sign that says, "I have ceded the 2012 election to Republicans." It's such bad advise Alter is giving that I'm almost euphoric.
Here's the advise the left should give Obama: Call out the lefties who are politicizing this tragedy and compare it to how you demanded a withholding of judgment in the Fort Hood massacre. Make the connection. If Obama were to do this, he would win BIG politically. But Dems/libs really appear too stupid to understand this. They are drunk with hatred and it's destroying them. When the "facts" do come to light on these murders, the story will be on the back page. I'm coming to believe, especially after this last election, that a majority of the American people know exactly what's going on here. What our responsibility has to be is to contact our representatives and tell them that we're not buying into this shit anymore. The way the dems and the MFM are handling this is just another reminder to the conservative majority as to the type of people trying to kill America.

Both sides claim to know what is best for the rest of us, while neither is willing to give an inch. Both sides, knowingly or unknowingly, use The Constitution a a prop to excuse their grab for power and control over the lives of others. I believe that Truman and Grant both made up there middle initial when they joined the service. Grant's given name was Hiram Ulysses but his family called him by his middle name. The story about him not wanting HUG stenciled on his trunk when he arrived at West Point iss true. He reversed his initials to read UHG to avoid the inevitable hazing from the upperclassmen over his initials. When he arrived at West Point, he was on the roles as U.S. Grant because the Congress Critter who appointed him assumed Ulysses was his first name and believed that his middle name must have been his mother's maiden name, Simpson. The Army wasn't about to correct the error, hence, he is known to history as U.S. Grant. And for the hazing, he was still called "United States" and "Uncle Sam." The "Sam" stuck and was the nickname that followed him among his close friends in the Army. Posted by: Reiver at January 10, 2011 01:47 PM (64S5N) 208

Politicizing a tragedy? Sure, I’ll take a shot. I hope that Giffords makes a complete recovery….and changes parties. These last hours have produced abundant evidence that her fellow Democrats would rather her dead at the hands of an “enemy” than alive by the grace of God. They’d rather lay culpability than render prayers. They’d rather wave a bloody shirt than work toward a just peace. Her neurosurgeon has given us some hope for her recovery, but it would be a horrible impairment indeed if she were left incapable of perceiving the wrong in these disgusting antics. I don't think there is anything we can do except stand firm. These are the kind of comments on yahoo:
I'll never forget when I was watching FoxNews during the presidential campaign. Palin was giving her stump speech in some small town during the closing weeks of the campaign. Making a snide reference to the fact that Obama's black, Palin said:"He's not like you and me..." In reply, a shout rang out from the crowd:"Kill him."She smiled, and continued with her speech.Palin may not be responsible for this tragedy, but it's not for lack of trying. These idiots are just delusional. They hear things that aren't there, they remember things that didn't happen, they link things that don't link, they are full out nuts, they are not rational. Conservatives like to argue that these are isolated incidents carried
out by lunatics and therefore carry no big lessons (unless the perpetrator is Muslim, in which case it’s terrorism); liberals view them as opportunities to address various social ills. Kennedy in 1968, but perhaps something positive can come from this. You, sir, are an ass. Conservatives don't argue that these are isolated incidents and carry no big lessons. And we don't isolate muslims, either asshole. We argue that it's NOT GOVERNMENT'S JOB to address 'social ills' as you put it. Rahm absolutely meant that in order to take away liberties guaranteed by God and the Constitution, you need to strike while people are in fear. Exactly what would you like to see come of this tragedy? Rush Limbaugh silenced? Fox News taken off the air? Guns removed from the public shelves? What is your goal, douchebag? Remember, an unarmed citizen is a peasant. Posted by: Sponge © at January 10, 2011 02:17 PM (UK9cE) 248

If there's one thing that Beck has been right about for a long time, it's the fact that the left has to goad us into acts of violence. He's said time after time that we're being set up and that the statists will keep slapping us until we finally hit back. And that's all they think theyneed to facilitate a violent revolution.

So Congress willmake a law restricting content of political speech, a prior restraint if you will, based on a "could be perceived" test? Sounds fine to us. Posted by: Kagan and Sotomayor at January 10, 2011 02:20 PM (sOtz/) 251
I'm starting to get the impression that lefties are habitual liars, inherently criminal, and need to be locked up.

Somewhat OT:
Karl Denninger, non Republican financial guy at Market Ticker, has been calling out Krugman for the past few days regarding the fact that he's been blaming this on the tea party. Today, in another stunner, Denninger links to a Michelle Malkin post on liberal hate. Posted by: shibumi at January 10, 2011 02:21 PM (OKZrE) 253

Bonehead and all the "both sides do it" people can get in an ordered anarchy single file line to kiss my rebel dick.
There isn't a "both sides do it" leg to stand on here, so quit waving your Harry Potter wand around looking for one. The blood wasn't even dry and the lefty bastards were planning the fucking campaign. The left has a box of stories and ads that reads "In case of mass murder, break glass" Jesus, the funerals haven't even started. Apparently it was no secret this kid was crazy and numerous people sent up red flags, specifically thinking he was the sort of kid who might be a spree killer. The sheriff is doing the most despicable form of blame-shifting with allies in the MFM andparanoid-styled Left of course.

"We have quite a bit of ammunition, courtesy of the left's own derangement."
Thanks, BackwardsBoy. As much contempt as I have for the teleprompter, I default to wanting the office that piece of shit is soiling to be strong for the good of this country. As he makes more clear the damage that he is willing to do to this country by his own words and actions for whatever his agenda may be, the uncertain risks attending the damage the office would suffer from throwing his own words back into his face begins to look like the safer course. "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,”
If a conservative had said this in response to Obama, not only would lefties be howling about the violent metaphor, but they'd be screaming "racism" for reviving the stereotype of black men carrying knives. But as it was Obama who said it, no problem on either score. Posted by: Jay Guevara at January 10, 2011 02:27 PM (sROP7) 261

I think, for the near future, all of this rests on what Dear Leader says. If he comes out neutral and tells everyone to wait until the investigation is done, then I will, for the first time, applaud him. If not, then I will without reserveaccuse him of trying to make this his "Reichtag" moment. The nation is as dry asdrought-blasted prairie grass right now and it would take only a spark to setthe leftards off right now. We shall see.

This is a typical leftist half-truth. Actually, it's a complete lie, but it's actually as close as the left can manage to come to the truth. Conservatives judge each event by the facts of the event - whether it's a crazy shooter, explicitly politically-motivated, or whether the killer expresses a religious motivation. Which is why they (usually) don't rush to judgment and start pushing an irrelevant political response. The response is less muted in the case of Islamically-motivated violence because it happens more often and is usually "declared." Liberals react instantaneously in pushing their agenda because they don't care about the facts of the case - the facts don't matter, it's their own agenda they care about. The "don't rush to judgment" response to obvious Islamically-motivated violence is part of the agenda of "multiculturalism" and the presumption that it's the West that's to blame. The bare coverage of leftist violence is just CYA. Alter is part of that agenda, a dishonest purveyor, a hypocrite. Posted by: Merovign, Bond Villain at January 10, 2011 03:06 PM (bxiXv) 265

This horrific event offers the president a chance to show leadership qualities that he’s inexplicably hidden away in some blind trust.
What will it take for these idiots to figure out he has no leadership qualities? What will it take for them to understand he's a child in an adult's position, a theoretician and academic out of his depth and unequipped for the job? This article line pretty much sums up how much of a pickle Liberals are in, the only thing they can hope for to turn things around for them is a "serious tragedy" that Obama can use to turn things around.
Here is the funny thing that serious event already came and went...it was called the BP oil spill. The recipe was there for a total liberal public affairs coup. It had everything they wanted in a serious event, an evil oil company causing a ecological disaster. This should have been XMAS the left's agenda and Obama. But he managed to screw that one up and make Him look even worse. Posted by: Gary B at January 11, 2011 12:57 AM (1gWfF) 269
