For Congress: Francisco Canseco, TX-23

This is one of those that's on ace's WTF version of the RCP battleground map, currently a toss-up. TX-23 covers San Antonio and runs out west to the edge of El Paso, mostly rural with 2/3 of the voters in SA. It was Henry Bonilla's (R) for ten years until redrawn to expand the Hispanic population.

Canseco is a businesman and family man, who actually knows something about creating jobs, meeting a payroll, something an awful lot of those in Congress know damn little about. The incumbent, Ciro Rodriguez is a fairly reliable Dem caucus voter (my complaint about Chet Edwards), but on occasion bucked the party line, including votes against the porkulus bill. But the wave is in a "take no prisoners" mood and it's not hard to see him getting swept away by it.

The only polling info I've found is from August showing Canseco up 43% to 37%, with a 4.9% MOE.

Canseco's website here, including a "throw the bums out" ad.

OH BONUS: commenter stuiec reminds us about this video, where Ciro Rodriguez lets us know he doesn't like being challenged by his constituents.

Funny thing, when I looked up what district I was in (this will be my first time voting), turns out I was literally right on the border of TX-23. The road that turns to my neighborhood is the border between TX-23 and Dem heavy TX-20. If I have lived 100-200 feet east, my vote wouldn't matter.

26 If you're looking for GOP congressional races that are tight but GOP-winnable, in a place where a modest contribution will have a disproportionate impact, you should indeed throw a few bucks to the Canseco campaign while there's still time for it to matter. Particularly when one considers the interaction between the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the upcoming Texas redistricting (+4 seats from 2000), a conservative Hispanic incumbent in that district would be worth his weight in gold to the GOP.

27 I'm doing phone-banking for Quico here in San Antonio. There is block-walking this weekend in the StoneOak area as well, but not sure I'll make that. Will try.

Rodriguez is a moderate type who did vote against TARP and Stimulus, but the healthcare vote is killing him. Plus the mood is that anyone who is enabling the Obama agenda needs to go, even if they themselves are not so terribly left as the rest. Clean house.

LUCKY YOU! I am in the exact opposite situation stuck literally within a stone's throw of TX23. Instead I get the execrable Charles Gonzalez (TX20) in a highly gerrymandered district with oodles of illegal aliens and o-bots. The only good part about it is I am moving in 8 weeks. Too much crime and gang activity for me (surprise, surprise!) And yes, I will still vote for Clayton Trotter the Repub although he likely has little chance of winning.(www.trotterforcongress.com)

It'd be so sweet to take this district back. I've been campaigning for him even though I live in the district next door. The family ranch is in his district though.

38 As this is my first post, I'm not sure if this is the right place to comment on this, but I was watching the Pengiuns game and a Union comerial came on blasting Mike Kelly for the usual stuff, but they also said that "people like Ray Lewiis will get a tax cut" if Mike Kelly gets elected. DURING THE 3RD PERIOD OF A PITTGSBURGH PENGUINS GAME. Perhaps someone else can do the reaseach on this (and take the creidt) but I thought it was worth mentioning.

39 Prefacing by saying I despise racial politics, but for the purpose of winning I'm very glad we'll be adding to the Hispanic/Latino-a ranks on the Republican side of the aisle, Rubio, Bill Flores Canseco immediately come to mind. I say this as someone that is of Mexican Spanish heritage on my dad's side of the family. I've been helping Flores who is going to beat Chet Edwards, since that district is the closest one to Houston that is in play.

But we're much more politically diverse than the media would like everyone to believe, including on immigration policy. I never want us to become trapped on the plantation of either party like the black vote has.

I've been voting for Lamar Smith since I moved here. It will be my pleasure to send Mr. Smith back to Washington, because that's where he belongs.
