For Congress: Sam Caligiuri, CT-5

Sam Caligiuri is currently a State Senator representing Connecticut's 16th district. From his website:

In 2007, Sam was the only State Senator in any party, to vote against the state budget, arguing that it was wrong for the people of Connecticut because it exceeded the state spending cap and would lead to huge state deficits. Because of Sam’s principled stance against the state budget, newspapers praised him, calling him the “last defender” of the state spending cap and the “last sane man in Hartford.”

Emphasis me.

He previously served as president of the Waterbury Board of Aldermen, briefly becoming acting mayor of Waterbury in 2001 when Mayor Philip Giordano was removed from office.

Caligiuri is an NRCC 'Young Gun,' and has pledged to oppose all tax increases and to fight the implementation of government-controlled health care.

His opponent is (two-term) incumbent Chris Murphy, a Pelosi lapdog (and former Dodd intern) who voted for the bailout, stimulus package, and health care reform bills. A cookie-cutter liberal who also happens to serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee. Wowzers! 'Commerce.' That must mean that he's an expert, right?

Here, I pulled this quote off his site, from the 'Economy' section of the Issues tab:

As our financial system struggles and our housing markets contract, too many jobs have been lost and too many families are teetering on fiscal calamity. At a time when the private markets are not responding, it is essential that the government aggressively address this problem.

When you are exhausted from explaining cause and effect to liberals, there is only FacePalm.

Can Caligiuri win?
Polling results are recently wildly inconsistent. Murphy claims that his internal polling shows him on top by 13 points. But a new independent poll shows Caligiuri up by five. The Murphy camp is vehemently disputing it.

Incidentally, that poll also claims to find that the 5th District is the 'most conservative' district in CT.

Real Clear Politics has Caligiuri at +6 with likely voters.

The results of my own internal poll, conducted deep inside my intestines after ceaselessly talking politics with unsuspecting Democrats for the past two weeks, is that The Wave will be hitting inland Connecticut, and some ordinary, workaday, traditional Democrat voters* are going to take an active and blood-lusty part in it, because they are fed up too.

This is huge.

*An endangered species, but not extinct.

If/When the next Congress votes to repeal Obamacare, and when Obama vetoes the repeal, it will give the 2012 Republican/Tea Party presidential nominee a ready-made, winning, slogan: "I will sign a repeal of the healthcare bill."

You multiply this by all the things the GOP congress could pass and see vetoed, and it's a fait accompli, no matter how much the press and Obama run against the Republicans.

Posted by: Soothsayer at October 13, 2010 01:49 PM (uFokq)

25 does VA have a D or an R legislature?
have an R governor. Usually, the process is the legislature draws it up in a bill and the governor signs on. Each state varies. In Illinois we have a completely stupid method. Our Democratic legislature will draw up a map, hopefully our Republican governor (Brady) will veto it, the Ds don't have enough in the state senate to override the veto, so each party will pick 4 members of a commission, who will then deadlock, and the deadlock will be decided by each party submitting one person to be added to the Commission, both names put in a hat once owned by Abe Lincoln and being left completely to chance.
And you wonder why this state sucks.......

38 Va typically has a repub legislature and the governor goes back and forth. In va you can only be gov for one term and then you're out. Right now we have too dem senators. The republicans gerrymandered northern va and put all the kooks into Va8 so that the other Nova districts were competitive--mostly to keep Frank Wolfe and Davis safe. That left all the crazies: Alexandria, Arlington, and the old ugly hippie boomer assholes in Reston in Va8. Reston is 22 miles from Alexandria with many other municipalities in the way but they have been forced into an unholy alliance to keep fairfax co. competitive. In the process, there is no way to get rid of douchebag, corruptocrat, wifebeating, anti-semite, creep Jim "the worst congressman" Moran.

51 Sort of O/T: Maybe I'm crazy but you know who I think has a real chance of winning? Isaac Hayes in the IL-2 race against Jesse Jackson Jr. Back in August phone polls put Hayes ahead by 53%. I haven't see anything more current. On the face of it IL-2 seems bluer than blue and no chance. BUT IL-2 has a lot of middle class suburbs included in it. People are mad or fearful of the shape of the nation. Jobs are insanely tough to get here. Most leftists feel too dejected to GOTV. The black community is pissed at the democrats because they've actively opposed Walmart and the jobs it could bring as well as the insane murder rate. Now, it's a huge long shot but Hayes needs money and support now. With it I think he can capitalize on the anti-big government anger in IL-2.

"With a name like Caligiuri, how long till it comes out that he has ties to the mob and his family owned a bank that loaned millions to known mobsters........Oh...wait....sorry. Wrong state."
Not really the wrong state. Waterbury has been mob run for at least 75 years. Waterbury should never, ever, EVER elect anyone who's name ends in "a"or 'i"to high office again - just on precautionary principles. But they keep doing it.
Around 99-2000 the Waterbury mayor was caught molesting several teens - multiple counts. The reason they caught him was because of anothet financial investigation where they were tapping his phones. When they heard the incriminating evidence re the molestation from the wiretaps, they had to cut the financial investigation short in order to prosecute on the statuatory rape. So the mayor went, the corruption stayed.

During the last local election, the Republicans cleaned up in my town and there are very few Dems in high places. A harbinger of things to come?

If someone thinks the healthcare bill sucks, it's a waste of resources calling them and telling them that the healthcare bill sucks. If someone is already adamantly supporting Linda, there's no reason to waste resources calling them, other than to encourage them to vote or ask for their help.

On the other side, they need to know who to call when the GOTV starts and who to ignore. We certainly don't want to waste resources trying to get people who support Blumenthal out to the polls.

70 I think it is great that Caligiuri is close to or leading in the polls over Lapdog Murphy. I have not seen any TV ads from Caliguiri either. Only lame ads from Lapdog Murphy. Remember Lapdog Murphy first won in 2006 when the Dems swept into office and he defeated Nancy Johnson who was in office for a long, long time. I haven't seen a Caliguiri TV ad yet. I hope they start running soon and remind everyone what Lapdog's record is - he voted for the TARP bailout, Porkulus, Cap & Tax (I believe), Obamacare.
