For Congress: Chris Gibson, NY-20

(Part of an Ace of Spades HQ campaign to highlight races that can be won but need your help)

Chris Gibson NY-20

Gibson NY-20_2.jpg

The Race-
This is the seat Kirsten Gilibrand held before being named to the Senate.

After a close special election race in ’09, in which Democrat Scott Murphy was elected, the GOP is trying to win the seat back with candidate Chris Gibson.

Gibson is a recently retired Army Colonel (he was in Haiti with the 82nd Airborne doing relief missions, just weeks before retiring and announcing his candidacy). He’s running on an anti-spending, anti-tax and pro conservative/market based reform of health care platform.

The Candidate
(from his website)-

Chris Gibson grew up in Columbia County in the town of Kinderhook. He was the Point Guard and Co-Captain of Ichabod Crane’s High School Basketball Team and went on to graduate magna cum laude with a BA in History from Siena College while earning a ROTC Commission there.

Over the course of his 24 year Army career Chris rose to the rank of Colonel and deployed 7 times; including 4 combat tours to Iraq, and separate deployments to Kosovo, the Southwestern US for a counter-drug operation, and most recently (just prior to his retirement) to Haiti where he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team during the opening month of that humanitarian relief operation.

Chris holds an MPA and PhD in Government from Cornell University and is the author of Securing the State, a book on national security decision-making published in 2008. Chris has been married to Mary Jo, a NYS Licensed Clinical Social Worker, for over 13 years and they have three children.

Why Gibson can win-
The district was tailored made for Republican John Sweeny . Cook lists it (pdf) as R+2 and Obama barely carried by only 3 points,( he won the state as a whole by 27%).

The district only went to the Democrats as part of their takeover year in ’06 and then mostly because Sweeny self-destructed over allegations of domestic violence and several DUI incidents.

A lack luster campaign in the ’09 special election by state GOP Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, (he took weeks to say whether he would have voted for the stimulus) enabled Murphy to keep the seat in Democratic hands. Murphy originally opposed the health care bill but after being buttonholed on the House floor by Nancy Pelosi, he flipped to a yes on the final bill.

Gibson is a novice candidate but he’s been working the ground game hard for several months and is now starting to get ads up on TV (about 3 weeks behind Murphy). The largest county in the district, Saratoga, is a Republican stronghold and Gibson should do very well there.

It’s been a fairly quiet campaign (though the DCCC is starting to run attack ads against Gibson, so they are getting nervous), but Gibson’s impressive personal story of service, the Republican leanings of the district and the overall favorable environment for the GOP are all working in Gibson’s favor.

8 DrewM., I would love to help write these profiles for any number of races. (I can think of several candidates -- ME-2 (Jason Levesque v. Mike Michaud), CA-43 (Van Tran v. Loretta Sanchez) spring immediately to mind. Ryan Frazier in CO-7 could DEFINITELY use more money and attention to get over the top (remember the drag that the governor's race is going to be...)

Good idea for a series. Would love to contribute.

14 Please forgive my boy Pete and please don't be so rough on him. He's never been quite right in the head and not too smart either; I blame it on him being conceived during a wild night of passion with all the boys down at the state mental hospital. After seeing the results, I have up on sex with those boys and took to hanging out with Bertha and the girls at the Women's Reformatory instead.

The only one I've seen is from back in late August/early September, so it's useless.

I think the biggest indication that it's a competitive race is the DCCC ad buy. I can't find anything on the size of it but they aren't spending money on guaranteed winners or losers at this point. It may be leaning to them but if the DCCC is still spending on it, it's still a race that's up for grabs.

38 I'm in this district. The last official poll was a Siena poll from nearly a month ago that showed Murphy up by 17 (54-37). This seems insane for this district and Siena tends to overweight Dems. Murphy's flip-flopping on Obamacare was not looked upon well here in upstate.

Gibson's campaign released another poll showing it 45-40 in favor of Murphy about 2 weeks ago. The problem here is money. Murphy has around 1.5 million with Gibson having around 600k. I see one Gibson commercial for every 3 Murphy commercials on the air yet 60% of the yard signs I see are for Gibson. This is very winnable. I've already given Gibson a few hundred bucks but I'd hope the RNCC would throw some more money into this.

Posted by: John J at October 12, 2010 01:50 PM (2dffX)

39 You know, we'd be in a much deeper shithole if the imbecile Dems had nominated Hillary instead of Obimbo.

I think she still would have beaten McCain, but she'd be running a lot closer to center than the jug-eared fuck would. Pelosi wouldn't have been running the agenda for the last two years, and we might be looking at gains, but probably not the eclipsing tidal wave this is looking like, leaving us in the minority again and Hilly free to creep us toward socialism at a rate the American people would have ignored.

Posted by: Jean at October 12, 2010 01:53 PM (bJevO)

41 Scott Murphy clearly believes he is vulnerable, as he just made headlines by refusing to commit to backing Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House next term. (Of course he ultimately would, that's not the point...). You don't touch that sort of third rail with your party leader and benefactor unless absolutely necessary.

53 Chris Gibson is my neighbor in the little Village of Kinderhook, NY (hometown of Pres. Martin van Buren, the first machine Democrat to get to the White House).

Gibson is a good guy and would be an excellent replacement for Scott Murphy. Like many Dems who pretend to be "conservative", Murphy would cast one vote that looked good (against Obamacare for instance) and then when it mattered (the final vote) would line up with Nancy Pelosi (which is what Murphy did with Obamacare).

Siena College said that Murphy has a big lead but that is belied by the fact that Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, appeared with Murphy at a local farmstand last week; and Cabinet Secretaries do not appear in person with candidates three weeks before elections in safe seats!

Go Chris Gibson! He can win.

The way I understand it, the first few will be good strong ones in case the rescue thing doesn't go great. They don't want weak people stuck in the drill hole. If three or four get out OK, then come the weakest, and last, more fit ones.

pleasures) - I want in on the wave action so would gladly help in NY
where I could make a difference.

90 I just looked at the pictures and on a Raciness Scale of 1-10, they definitely get a 1. Embarrassing, yes but nothing most adults haven't ever been around.

That's the problem with the cornucopia of cheap, plentiful internet porn. After awhile, you get so jaded that you don't even plump unless someone's getting a Cleveland Chili Dog or having their balls beaten bloody with a wire grill brush. I mean, c'mon - hands?

91 I have a problem with that weak chinned boy friend of hers and trusting a friend with a camera, those things call her judgement into question more then the photos.

Awesome how she lets some other chick have a go. Great morals there.

Also, I think this is going to be much more prevalent as the Facebook/Myspace age starts running for office. At least when we were young, we weren't dumb enough to post this shit on the internet.

The man was in Ft Edward a week ago, and I had a chance to talk for a minute. He just came across as a really decent guy. Also looks like he could put the uniform back on with no problem.

Having the military show interest in the political process has gotta be a huge plus for the country. At least you can be sure there's genuine love for the country.

He's only been out like 6 or 7 months. He went right from the 82nd Airborne in Haiti to this race.

Amazing that he'd want to jump right into this. A guy with his skills, education and experience could do well for himself (even in this economy). Says something about him that this is the path he's chosen (maybe that he's nuts!).

Yeah.

I flogged this race here on more than one occasion. I'd really like to see him win.

98 @38, I live in Rensselaer County. In myarea there are probablythree Gibson signs to every Murphy sign, and that's only because the Demonrats have just set up a new HQ in East Greenbush andarenow busily littering the roadsides with their signs. Then again, we tend to be rural, backwoods bitter clingers around here.
I've thrown his campaign a few bills, and will again on Thursday when I get paid. He definitely deserves moron support!

99 Ace, thanks for pointing out this candidate, I'll send him and Steele a contribution. Please keep posting names of any candidates who you think need help - maybe you could actually do a long shot list for morons. I am trying to send contributions to as many long shots as possible. I sent to candidates onDick Morris's list and to his www.Superpacusa.com
Thanks Again!

101 Good grief, just reading his bio made me want to lay down and take a nap. Can you imagine a Washington DC chock full of people as awesome as this guy?? OK, now I need to lie down before I swoon at that thought.

Now I'm just going to go take a nap for no reason. I love naps.

102 THIS RACE IS WINNABLE! I live in Northern Dutchess county, which probably has the most democrats in the district, and the yard signs are easily 5 to 1 in Gibson's favor. I, a registered Republican, am getting spammed by the Murphy campaign - they are pretty desperate. This is one race that could benefit from an ACE appearance.

104 This guy is the real deal. His wife is great, his kids are normal and he is very very dedicated, intelligent, and ready to serve us. Again. Although we are a family of modest means, we have contributed to his campaign, and hope you can too. We live in the district and look forward to manning the phones on election day.

105 I am in the farflung northern edge of this gerrymandered bugsplat that is NY-20, and while the Gibson local coordinator planted a yard sign the same day I spoke with her (thank you very much), I have had no callback as to what else I can do.

Murphy's campaign called me and asked for help, and I told them I was a Russian citizen and how could I get them the 20 grand I wanted to donate, then hung up.

I am about to start making my from-home 40 calls I signed up for through the 40 Calls website, but thought it might make more sense to wait just a little.

What else should I be doing? The email addy listed here is a good one.
