Renee Ellmers: I Won't Increase Your Taxes. Bob "The Strangler" Etheridge Already Did

So many races... so many within reach.

I met Renee Ellmers, candidate for Representative of NC-2, at BlogCon. She wanted to get her name out there, I guess, and certainly didn't mind mixing it up with silly bloggers to do it.

She doesn't mind mixing with her constituents and the common folk -- you know, like Barney Frank.

She needs money to run an ad defending herself against Bob Etheridge's latest smear.

After graduating from Madison High School, needing to work her way through college, Renee trained as a Medical Assistant. For the next eight years, working full and part-time jobs, she attended Oakland University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

A year later, working as a Surgical Intensive Care Nurse at Beaumont Hospital she met her husband, Brent, a graduate of the University Of Indiana School Of Medicine.

After their son was born, while visiting family in Cary, Renee and her husband decided to move to North Carolina. Today she works with her husband as Clinical Director of the Trinity Wound Care Center in Dunn.

I asked her what she did, mostly, and she said, "Wound care."

Wound care?!, I said. That's kind of a graphic image to drop on a voter. What the hell kind of knife-fighting hillbilly-feud district are you in down there in North Carolina? Say "Special treatment," I advised.

She laughed, or pretended to, which makes her cool in my book.

But what about the substance of the charge? Does she support a "national sales tax"?

Well, it is precisely as I thought, and precisely as you would have guessed: Yes, she supports the so-called "Fair Tax" to replace the income tax, not be piled on top of it.

Do I support that? Hell, I don't know. Maybe. Right now it's hard to say because it hasn't gotten the vetting, the big national scrutiny and analysis, it needs before I think the decision is ripe. But it's definitely a conservative, low-tax idea. It is not, as this unmitigated dickhead suggests, a "new national sales tax."

The idea, of course, is to get rid of the IRS completely in favor of a point-of-sale collection system, taxing expenditures, not income, not wealth, not savings. Quite a few conservative economists think that such a tax could lead to enormous gains in economic growth (and of course -- no more IRS and no more April 15th hell). And that 23% number is not picked at random; it is supposed to be a number which will result in tax revenue remaining equal to the current (Bush) rates, so it in no way raises taxes. (Actually, the main criticism of the plan is that that rate is too low and will not be revenue-neutral-- so, as presented at least, it's arguably a tax-cutting plan.)

So, there you go. This choke-y bastard lied, flat out, and he's doing so in ads, and this good woman needs your help to combat that.

By the way, here's Anderson Cooper attempting to berate her and look foolish. I find his flacking for Etheridge... unpersuasive.

So here Anderson Cooper suggests that it's okay for the Victory Mosque to be built, because "all religions do it," apparently. That is, build triumphal religious centers upon sites of military victories. So we should all be cool and chill out about it being done to us, now, not 1500 years ago.

And then of course he keeps talking over her and over her.

And then tells her, condescendingly, that the Victory Mosque isn't at the WTC, but two blocks away. Score, eh?

Another point: Because Renee Ellmers isn't willing to swear to the good intentions of a provocative, terrorist-coddling Imam she doesn't know, she's the bad guy?

And then more, "You do know, don't you..."'s. Liberals love those.

At the end, Anderson Cooper piously instructs the audience, "I'm not here to take a position against Ms. Ellmers..."

Right, Anderson. Right. And I suppose when liberal mosque-enthusiasts came on you similarly peppered them with...

"You do know, don't you, that Imam Rauf refuses to call Hamas a terrorist organization, right? Right?"

Or:

"You do know -- or were you unaware...? --- that Imam Rauf has called America an 'accomplice' in 9/11?"

No, I don't think that Anderson Cooper, who just wants to correct people's factual misstatements, noted any of those facts for his liberal guests to squirm with.

7 Buck is getting smeared in CO for the same position and with the same implication that it would be a new tax rather than a replacement of income tax with credits for low income folks like we have now with EITC programs. Hopefully people are smarter than that but Buck and Gardner here in CO do not seem to be using their web sites to counter. I think its a mistake for them to rely on others to fight their battles on these smears.

12 The "Fair" Tax is NOT the flat tax. It is a tax increase for 90% (or more of the tax paying public). It is also not 23% as they advertise. When this POS first came out I went to the library and got the book, which turned out to be almost worthless except for the FAQ in the back. The rest of the book is spent talking about how bad the current system is.

You have to go to the web site and review their "calculations" and studies to figure out what they are doing. The you have to get the actual bill that was submitted to congress and read that closely.

This bill would be an unmitigated disaster for retired people and a huge screwing for almost everyone else. I say almost because the same non-taxpaying freeloaders we have at there now who suck from the public tit and who don't pay any taxes will not pay any taxes under this bill.

A flat tax means that everyone (yes all) will pay a flat percentage of tax on all income that they have, regardless of source. No deductions, no write-offs, and no social engineering with the tax code.

Oh and BTW, the bill that was submitted to the House has NOTHING in it about repealing the income tax amendment before it takes effect. You will wind up with this tax and the income tax and be right where the liberal want.

Europe with both income tax and a VAT, and we add all the State, country, and other taxes as well.

This is a piece of shit as it is currently written.

16 Wound care can be anything from post op sites. burns to decubitus ulcers (bed sores). The skin is an organ and any open or damaged area needs treatment--- and for some, it needs specialized treatment regularly to help it heal, prevent infection and the onset of complications such as gangrene.

I'm a huge fan of wound specialists (but then again, they're often fans of mine )
Just for that alone I'd vote for her.

21 I saw that Anderson Cooper interview and posted about it in one of the threads in real time. And the next day I posted the interview. I thought she was great, handled herself beautifully. She got him so upset that he went and got an expert to prove that somehow what he was spouting about the Catholic Church was right, when in fact, it wasn't. Whenever it's your show and you feel the need to get an "expert" to back you up after you've been owned totally by a smart as a whip nurse from the south....then you know you've lost. She is one smart cookie and no matter how Anderson tried to intimidate her, she didn't back down. I think Anderson was shocked that someone didn't bow to his prowess. Anyways...would love to see her and Michelle Bachman on the same team....as they go searching for the remaining dems to come out for the "discussion".

30 Okay, it's probably already been noted, but I will note it again. It is NOT the FLAT TAX. It is called the Fair Tax. Please educate yourselves on it before joining the legions of people demagoguing it. There are 2 books on it, both written by Congressman John Linder, and radio host Neal Boortz. There are all kinds of lies out there about it, including the notion that it would be an additional 23% sales tax above and beyond what is already being paid. It would instead replace all all current federal withholdings and, by removing the tax component embedded in practically all consumer goods sold in this country, will cause the price of these goods to drop, making it a near wash when these goods are sold in the retail marketplace. I can't do it proper justice, I would just suggest that before people attack the Fair Tax, they read about it. If, after you have read all the explanations, you still don't like it, then hey, that's all I can ask. Just don't do what this administration of liars does and condemn it without all the facts. Thanks.

After all the high tech shit and the "research triangle" shit kicked off it exploded, the property taxes went through the roof, and all those things that the northerners moved there to escape started being implemented.

The last time I went to Raleigh on business I didn't stay or go to Cary.

Rush had an article about the Russia's "Flat Taxksy" in a Limbaugh letter.

Part of the reason why Russia instituted the Flat Tax was that it was easier to pay the flat percentage instead of hiring people to finding loophole around it. I have next-to-nil economic knowledge, so I have no idea if a Flat Tax vs a National Sales tax would be better (or some yet-unheard of tax system), but the current tax scheme sucks monkey balls and needed to be replaced (or vastly simplified) yesterday.

75 Part of the reason why Russia instituted the Flat
Tax was that it was easier to pay the flat percentage instead of hiring
people to finding loophole around it.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at October 06, 2010 07:56 PM (c0A3e)
Yeah. The compliance and payment percentages went through the roof. That's the point Flat Tax proponents always make. That even though the rate goes down, revenue would go up from tall the tax evaders coming out of the woodwork.I buy that argument after the Russian experiment.

Posted by: Editor at October 06, 2010 08:00 PM (pUfK9)

76 You are confused, aren't you. Both taxes were explained upthread. The flat tax is an income tax. The fair tax is a fixed tax on purchases.

I should also add that both of these is so much better than the tax system we have now. But first and foremost, before any national tax is legislated, the Income Tax ammendment in the Constitution needs to be repealed.

Posted by: Soona at October 06, 2010 08:00 PM (uDqmh)

77 Taxing consumption is a slow death to the free market system. The more it's taxed the less you spend and the more they need to raise the tax to generate income lost due to lack of consumption...it's the same as we have now in net effect of the economy. The only thing that will truly free the market is a low single flat tax on income. Everyone pays regardless of income or corporate. status. I would love to hear such talk, even if its only a mumble, from a solid candidate.

Another cost saving in favor of the flat tax is the coin saved from paying accountants, attorneys etc. for preparing returns. And time saving. Today, per the IRS, the average individual tax return takes slightly over 4 hours.....if I remember the latest IRS bulletin correctly.

Uh, well, the argument made by Fair Taxers is that the price of goods would necessarily go down (see what I did there?), because the restrictive taxes on businesses would be gone, thus losing the hidden taxes on goods, etc., etc.

I'm sure he would love it. As I said, it is a tax increase for everyone above about 30K and below 500K. That is from various test cases that I calculated out using how the law was written. My taxes would actually triple and if they included sales tax on drugs (not clear in the legislation) I would have to go back to work because I couldn't afford to remain retired. The taxes would be too high.
The other thing this stupid tax would do if implemented as written, would be to create a huge black market in "used goods".

88 Mallamut - yes, Huckabee was/is for the Fair Tax. I count that as a plus in his favor rather than a minus for the Fair Tax though, because the Fair Tax is definitely better than the bullshit we have now.

BTW, Flat Tax is not "everyone pays the same amount," it's "everyone pays the same percentage." Freedom Works used to have a tax calculator for it but the link is dead now; that alone made a quite convincing case. For those thinking this would screw the poor, it is not so. I am the poor. I don't want Fair Tax because the stuff I buy costs enough already, and it will end up like a VAT, which I experienced firsthand when I was stationed in Germany (US military is eligible for exemptions, but it was a major pain in the ass filling out forms just for everyday purchases). VAT sucks BIG TIME. I don't trust the gubmint to keep "Fair Tax" from becoming like the European VAT in a big hurry, all good intentions aside.

Lot of down side to this. I admit, for someone in the tax business, I have not studied the Fair Tax that much. Again, I just remember Huckabee being a proponet of it. His ads "I will close down the IRS" which I laughed at every time I saw one. Really....hey, Mike, who is going to process those sales tax returns, gonna put everyone on the honor system. And the IRS collection process can be switched over to collect in Fair Tax receiots as well as income. In fact, it could be worse...if the IRS adopts the fiduciary rule associated with 941 returns to Fair Tax returns, a lot of negotiated resolutions are taken off the table.
On the upside....maybe ACCORN will get into the used goods market and we can get more Hannah............

You can get the book from the library and read the FAQ in the back, skip the rest. But definitely don't buy it.

After that, if you have an electronic banking system use your last annual rollout of purchases indexed by category and tax those purchases by 31% (not 23).

If you are paying social security taxes you can add the 7.1% back + the 2.5% for medicare/aid. But don't add your employer's contribution because that is an unwarranted assumption by Boertz. Also don't assume that all the prices of your goods are going to go down because corporations are no longer paying taxes. In fact, don't assume a damn thing that is NOT actually written in the bill; and that includes the income tax going away because that isn't written in the bill.

From her website, and it's good enough for me.
The government’s answer to double digit jobless rates has been more spending and higher taxes. The result has been an expansion of the already bloated federal government with additional public sector jobs, at the expense of jobs in the private sector. We cannot spend our way out of recession. Only by cutting taxes will we create an environment where the free enterprise system is allowed to flourish. I am for lower tax rates across the board and am in favor of tax reform. We must cut taxes and cut spending NOW.

121 James Carville's polling firm has released a poll that show running hard against Governor Palin will fail. Take a look at questions 44 and 53.

By a margin of 50-43, voters believe the statement that "I'm more worried that the Democratic candidates are supporting President Obama's partisan and extreme agenda" is closer to their own view than the hilarious statement "I'm more worried that the Republican candidates are supporting Sarah Palin's partisan and extreme agenda."

Carville also finds by a margin of 57-41 that voters have no serious doubts about a Republican candidate that "is a strong supporter of Sarah Palin's agenda for Washington, and with the support of President Bush's top operatives, is doing everything possible to obstruct President Obama's efforts and tie Congress up in knots."

Carville couldn't even get voters to bite with his incredibly leading questions.

Posted by: beelzebub's burp at October 06, 2010 08:09 PM (7+pP9)
I'm curious: what is the fair share that rich white men should pay? Is it different from rich white women's fair share, or rich Black people's of either gender?
And how does a fair share from a rich person differ from a fair share from a non-rich person? What notion of fairness says that the rich person should pay a higher share -- that is, a higher marginal rate -- than someone who makes less?
If everybody paid the same share -- ten percent, say -- then if person A earned ten times as much as person B, person A would pay ten times as much in taxes as person B. Isn't that quintessentially fair?
A troll pipes in to advocate that rich white men should have their property expropriated and given to the "deserving classes." Color me bored.

159 Divide and Conquer. The current system is the main vehicle to control our lives. Would anybody say that the Fair Tax or the Flat Tax or even a singular VAT wouldn't be better than what we have now? We need to think of this in stages like the libs have done with their program to regulate and take over so many aspects of our lives in which they have no business (like Obamacare). Let's call this REAL Tax Reform:
Step 1. Put a stake through the heart of the current system with a repeal of the 16th - End Income tax as a part of all competing agendas
Step 2. Put the competing systems up for a vote: Flat, Fair,VAT, Current System, Other
Step 3. Have a run off between the top two and go with the winner. The second best can't complain because they've had two bites at the apple and there will be an acceptance of the winning system after the run off.
I have my preference but I don't think anyone could come up with a worse system for taxation than we have now. It's politician's dream and a citizen's nightmare. If any one of us were audited they'd have cause to take us to tax court because the complexity and contraditions of the tax code.

163 Oh, joy. Guess I'll have to get up early, put on my Excellence in Broadcasting t-shirt and mosey over to the Farmer's Market to pick up some produce and take a couple of pictures:
Stuart --The "enthusiasm gap" is shrinking fast.A lot of the Washington, D.C. pundits claim you don't care about this year's election -- that the right-wing is more invested in what happens to our country than you are -- but you and I know better. When 26,500 fired-up Americans showed up to hear President Obama speak in Wisconsin two weeks ago, there was no enthusiasm gap. And when folks like you make calls and knock on doors to get folks to commit to vote this week, there will be no enthusiasm gap.Click here to RSVP for a voter contact event in Walnut Creek? Here are the details:
What: Vote 2010 EventWhere: Walnut Creek Farmers Marketcorner of Lacassie LocustWalnut Creek, CA 94596When:Sunday, October 10th9:00 am
If you can't make that event, see if there's another one near you.President Obama has often reminded us that change doesn't happen overnight -- and there's good reason to be fired up. This movement -- along with the President and his allies in Congress -- has helped employ three million Americans and passed important reforms for health care and Wall Street. Now we're working together to pass immigration reform, create green jobs, and repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell.Compare that record to the Republican candidates who are promoting the same agenda that drove our economy off a cliff, demanding that we return to the failed policies of the past.Like Joe Miller, the Alaska Republican Senate nominee who has called for the elimination of the minimum wage. Or Rob Portman, running for Senate in Ohio, who helped shape the Bush Administration's economic policies. And at least five Republican Senate nominees have said they would support getting rid of the Department of Education. These people are not some fringe candidates -- they are the new Republican mainstream. And we cannot let them win.But we need you to join other volunteers in Walnut Creek on Sunday to pull it off:

194 All the fair tax backers keep saying it would REPLACE the income tax,
but NOTHING in the bill prevents it from being enacted without getting
rid of the income tax first and nothing in the bill calls for repeal of
the 16th amendment.

They keep saying that, but there is nothing to back it up.
Posted by: Vic at October 06, 2010 08:25 PM (/jbAw)
Sorry for the mass-quotage, but I can't let this go unchallenged.

These sections are directly from the current bill:

18 (f) FINDINGS RELATING TO REPEAL OF PRESENT

19 FEDERAL TAX SYSTEM.—Congress further finds that the

20 16th amendment to the United States Constitution should

21 be repealed.

[...]

4 SEC. 101. INCOME TAXES REPEALED.

5 Subtitle A of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (re

6 lating to income taxes and self-employment taxes) is re

7 pealed.

8 SEC. 102. PAYROLL TAXES REPEALED.

9 (a) IN GENERAL.—Subtitle C of the Internal Rev

10 enue Code of 1986 (relating to payroll taxes and with

11 holding of income taxes) is repealed.

[...]

8 TITLE IV—SUNSET OF SALES

9 TAX IF SIXTEENTH AMEND

10 MENT NOT REPEALED

11 SEC. 401. ELIMINATION OF SALES TAX IF SIXTEENTH

12 AMENDMENT NOT REPEALED.

13 If the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution of

14 the United States is not repealed before the end of the

15 7-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of

16 this Act, then all provisions of, and amendments made by,

17 this Act shall not apply to any use or consumption in any

18 year beginning after December 31 of the calendar year

19 in which or with which such period ends, except that the

20 Sales Tax Bureau of the Department of the Treasury shall

21 not be terminated until 6 months after such December 31.

So, the bill calls for the repealing of the 16th amendment (which can't
actually be performed by this bill as it's not a Constitutional amendment), crushes the currently implemented income tax code, and sunsets
if the 16th amendment isn't repealed within 7 years... which directly contradicts your entire statement.

218 Regarding the flat vs. fair tax, I really have no quarrel with either but if I were to implement one I would probably go with the flat tax because it's easier to explain. Plus, one of the claimed benefits to the fair tax is removing the hidden taxes that are built into the price of consumer goods. It seems to me that you could accomplish the same feat by abolishing the corporate income tax and payroll taxes (SS Medicare/Medicaid) altogether. Just set it up as follows:

1. One flat personal income tax rate, everyone pays, rate maxed at somewhere around 10% to 12.5%. No deductions for anything. No separate SS and Medicare/Medicaid taxes, everything is rolled into the same payment.
2. Peg the capital gains tax rate to the income tax rate so that everyone is still paying the same rate.
3. Maintain tax-deferred retirement accounts and increase tax-exempt medical accounts. This would allow the individual to invest for retirement and pay medical coverage, care, and prescriptions with tax-free dollars.
4. End the quarterly projected payments for self-employed. You pay your taxes after you make your money.
5. And while I'm at it, move tax day to the last Friday in September. It puts Tax Day very close to Election Day, which I'm certain is the main reason why Tax Day is currently in April.

Or pretty much any balls...

226 Uh, well, the argument made by Fair Taxers is that the price of goods would necessarily go down (see what I did there?), because the restrictive taxes on businesses would be gone, thus losing the hidden taxes on goods, etc., etc.
Posted by: Editor at October 06, 2010 08:05 PM (pUfK9)
Price of goods would be irrelivent, it's the funtion of the tax that counts. If a apple is 1dollar but the tax is .25 cents then the 1dollar means nothing. People who could afford the apple for 1dollar but not at $1.25 would not buy the apple, therefor the .25 cent tax would not flow to the Government. Thus the need to recoup that .25 cents would become very important to the Government so they would have to again impose a progressive system to recoup their losses. Its the same shit as what we currently have.
furthermore; such a tax has built in sound bites for politicians to use to justify a progressive system. Things like the tax on a Chevy is less then the tax on a Rolls, therefore if a rich person buys a Chevy instead of a Rolls they are screwing over the little guy because the little guy can only afford a Chevy. And people wuld buy it and vote for the guy who is gunna stick it to Richie. And before you know it, Richie includes the guy who can afford a 52in plasma but decideds he only wants a 32in plasma. That leads to crazy folks talking about demanding you buy items that reflect your income level so that you are not screwing over the poor fella. You see a consumtion tax doesn't tax savings, therefore anyone with money could avoid the big taxes by changing their spending habits thus greating a gap in tax income that would need to be addressed and you start the whole cycle over again.
I know, scoff if you like, but crazier shit is going on today.
The nastiest 4 letter word that starts with an "F" is "Fair".
Nope, you need to carve any tax in stone, make it easy to lower and hard as hell to increase. Something along the lines of a 15% flat tax that requires 2/3 vote to raise but only a simple majority to lower. Now we're talking, THAT would turn this country into an economic superpower, again, over night.

227 Wound care?!, I said. That's kind of a graphic image to drop on a
voter. What the hell kind of knife-fighting hillbilly-feud district are
you in down there in North Carolina? Say "Special treatment," I advised.

I dunno. I'm pretty sure that I never registered to vote before 2001 and when I did register (Thank you, ACORN weirdos, outside the Safeway on Prince Cambpell, that sooo wanted my registration and were more than happy to fill in all of the details like "party affiliation" out for me.

Best decision I ever made was to snatch that registration form out of your hands and fill it out as a NOP (No Party Affiliation) and mail it from my own home.

(Read some of the attached literature. I thought that they were just a shady environmental group at the supermarket, knew they were POVERTY PIMPS when I got home

Anyway...

There are lots of "regular" people who have plenty of reason to get very interested in national politics based on a very "wonky" analysis of the industry in which they swim.

Honestly, I didn't really get engaged until Social Security reform was on the table until after GWB's "mandate".

It impinged upon a sector of public policy that I had made it my special project to STUDY, the first 3 years out of college, for pecuniary reasons!

People do their "jobs", of course.

Most of us are always trying to figure out how to do our jobs better!

"Wound Care."

What does that entail?

Treatment, followup treatment, payment, after-care, payment for after-care, prescriptions for antibiotics etc...

You think that a smart Nurse could be unaware of these things?

A Doctor, sure...

Meh.

If I ever have a wound that needs debriding ( I can't TYPE that term without shuddering), I'd pick her to be in charge of the procedure and the follow-up.

229 So here Anderson Cooper suggests that it's okay for the Victory Mosque
to be built, because "all religions do it," apparently. That is, build
triumphal religious centers upon sites of military victories.

Er, Ace: NOT a "military victory," but a mass murder.

Man, I wished candidates accepted PayPal. I'm no longer enthused about using a credit card online after having my bank call and ask about purchases made in Macedonia...had to reissue the card under another number. That was seriously annoying.

Yes, yes, I know, PayPal has access to that information. But if it leaks out, then I know where it came from.

231 I just saw a similar thing in an ad for Gary Peters here in Michigan. Says his opponent wants to institute a tax break for "fat cat corporations" and pay for it by a 23% sales tax on everyone.
Talk about misleading.

235 A major goal of this research paper writing is the development of effective technical research paper writing skills. To help you become an accomplished research paper writer, you will prepare several research papers based upon the studies completed in research lab. Our research papers are not typical "lab reports." In a teaching lab a lab research paper report might be nothing more than answers to a set of research questions. Such an assignment hardly represents the kind of research paper writing you might be doing in your eventual career.

Our expert research paper writers provide a range of research paper help; they’re perfect to ensure YOU get a top degree mark. Don’t let your research paper pull you down after you’ve invested so much into your university course. If someone is eager to discover the long awaited research degree and just a step away from it and that step is research paper writing, then one should acquire professional help for getting satisfactory outcome. So to take professional editing help for your papers' approval is not a bad idea.

Written and oral communications skills are probably the most universal qualities sought by graduate and professional schools as well as by employers. You alone are responsible for developing such skills to a high level research paper writing help.

When I research a topic, I may be interested in just the methods, a specific result, the interpretation, or perhaps I just want to see a summary of the paper to determine if it is relevant to my study. To this end, many journals require the following sections, submitted in the order listed, each section to start on a new page.

There are variations of course. Some journals call for a combined results and discussion, for example, or include materials and methods after the body of the paper. The well known journal Science does away with separate sections altogether, except for the abstract.
