Who proposed that? Oh yeah, I did. And so did thirty thousand economists.

Two years ago. On the theory -- see if you can follow this logic, because it gets twisty -- that if you reduce the cost to employers for hiring and maintaining staff, they might actually hire and maintain more staff.

Did you follow that? I know, it's heady. Let me try again:

If costs for a thing go down, you can afford more of it.

No? Still too complicated?

Here, here's a talking sandwich then.

You get it? Yeah, well, see, Obama didn't get it, and I think they had to invite time-travelling baloney sandwich Johnny Coldcuts to the White House to make him understand.

But now, facing a double-dip Great Recession largely of his own design, suddenly he's willing to confront all sorts of disturbing scenarios, such as the bizarre notion that when taxes are reduced, economic activity increases.

The staff-level discussions are in preliminary stages. But with the unemployment rate expected to rise again in new jobs numbers due out Friday, such a move could serve both to spur hiring and to combat Republican charges that Obama’s tax policies would hurt small businesses.
More spending on infrastructure – particularly transportation projects – is also under discussion, sources said. But a person familiar with the talks said it would be easier for a package consisting purely of tax cuts to “avoid the stain of a ‘bailout’ or ‘stimulus’ label.”

I had a number crunching blogger run the numbers for me, and he said that the "Stimulus" of around $900 billion could have paid for a full and complete payroll tax holiday for employers for 2 1/2 years, or a full payroll tax holiday for both businesses and employees for 1 1/4 years.

$300 billion is... well, it's a lot less, isn't it?

Meanwhile Mike Pence says extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone. And then some.

"Well, we're going to stay focused on Election Day. But I think before that, we're going to continue to demand that this administration and this Congress make it clear that no American will see a tax increase in January of next year," Pence said during an appearance on CNBC.
"So the first thing that we will do is try to preserve the tax relief of 2001 and 2003 for all Americans — for all small businesses and family farmers. But we also want to look at the kind of across-the-board tax relief, the kind of tax relief that will encourage capital formation, to get this economy moving again," the Indiana Republican and potential presidential candidate added.

On Twitter, Steven Hayes is writing to Gibbs, confronting him with Obama's past declarations that raising taxes during a recession would be disastrous.

Industries that run on an efficiency of 90% plus like refining are extremely sensitive to market forces (supply and demand). Since demand lowers in a recession, and we've been in a near constant one for two years, hence moderate gas prices. If other countries economies take off while we remain stagnant, we're gonna be doubly screwed.

143 The problem is that the Payroll tax goes to Social Security, it is "technicly" a different fund, than the General Fund...
When they "rob" the Soc Sec fund, they replace it with Fed Bonds... which is actualy a large part of the National Debt.
So, this would, on paper, take money from Social Security, which is already in trouble with the Boomers retirings.
UNLESS they would replace these funds from the General fund... you would make Soc Sec even more unstable.
Better idea is a Tax Holiday for BUSINESS Taxes. Same result, but it would then come from the General Fund.

I think most people will instinctively believe that Obama's worst insticts will be neutered, and maybe, just maybe things will begin to pick up.
If they do, of course Zero will attempt to take all the credit, but the R's/Sarah/Beck/Rush etc must not letup so that people don't forget the real story as we approach 2012.

In places like NYC, you can be two teachers, a teacher and a cop, two cops, two firefighters, two ems, or any combination thereto and make over $250 grand together and since everyone's mortgage is based on the inflated property values, it is difficult to live within the city limits (city or boroughs) on $250 grand. Everything is expensive. And you give an enormous amount of money to city state and federal taxes. Really in places like NYC, over $500 grand might be fairer.

OK dougf, I know you're not an economist but try to think logically for a second. You own a hypothetical business and because of a tax holiday you have more cash because your expenses are the same and your expenditures are the samebut your taxes are lower. Let's go with the idea that you don't want to grow your business, you're happy with where you are, you have no desire to buy more capital (buildings, machines, software, goods, whatever) and you are willing to stay at exactly the capacity that you are at the moment because you are either lazy or made a death bed promise to never get any bigger to grandpa. Still you have extra cash. You willeither invest the money, put it in a bank account, or spend it. In each of these scenarios,or combination thereof, the money goes into the economy and is either available for borrowers or allows someone else theincreased income to buy more capital or hire moreemployees or grow. WHEN THE GOVT TAKES FEWER TAXES THE MONEY IS AVAILABLE FOR GROWTH.

My mother-in-law is on a very limited fixed income now and when she sent us our birthday checks this year, they seemed a little large (for her situation), so I mentioned to her she really doesn't need to send anything.

Anyway, she said that it was ok, because the VA had decided that ALS is a service-related disease, so she now gets $1000/month from them.

I'm glad she has the extra income - she certainly needs it - but my f-i-l was in the Marines for a couple of years and he was stationed in the U.S. He was a supply sergeant. So unless Spam has some kind of bizarre neurotoxin in it, how is that a service-related disease?
