Slate: Joe Miller's Embarrassing Defeat

Politico wanted to call it over, too, because Politico was determined to write the storyline that insurgents (read: Tea Party) went down in flames. First they claimed all insurgents lost, then Scott won in Florida, so Politico changed that to say he was the exception that proved the rule that all insurgents fail.

Mickey Kaus was giving them smack about it all night.

Two days ago, Slate went full-retard.

Mama Grizzly Man

Why the candidate of Sarah Palin and the Tea Party Express is losing in Alaska.
By Alexandra Gutierrez

Posted Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at 5:54 PM ET

UNALASKA, Alaska—On Tuesday, in her home state, Sarah Palin's favorite will probably get trounced. Joe Miller is widely expected to lose by a large margin to incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary—an embarrassing defeat for the former governor, who has endorsed Miller, but also to Miller's other major backer, the Tea Party Express.

...

Not surprisingly, Steve Wackowski, a campaign spokesman for Murkowski, agrees that backing from Palin and the Tea Party Express is more of a liability for Miller than anything else. "It turns Alaskans off when outside groups from the Lower 48 like this California Tea Party Express come out and try to tell Alaskans how to vote and what they should be doing," says Wackowski. "I'm from here; I grew up here. And whether it's extreme environmentalists telling us that we can't drill in ANWR or that we can't do predator control to manage our game stocks, I think that really rubs Alaskans the wrong way. On Tuesday, you're going to see evidence of that."

Despite the long odds, Miller's team is still feeling optimistic. On Friday Sarah Palin wrote yet another Facebook post extolling his commonsense conservative values, and campaign spokesman Randy DeSoto says internal polls show that the campaign is within one point of Murkowski. The race is "pretty much neck and neck," he says. On Tuesday, we'll find out exactly how close those necks are.

In fairness, there was some polling showing Miller behind. But... This was an article written to describe what the author wished to happen, and what the intended audience joined him in wishing with all their hearts would happen.

Earlier tonight, someone called The Politico's claim of insurgents (again: by that they meant Tea Party favorites) failing so disastrously a case of spin.

I don't even think it's spin. Spin is when you know you're lying. These guys aren't lying.

They're wish-casting. They are not telling you any sort of objective reasonable assessment of likelihood; they are just telling you what their shriveled black hearts wish would happen.

This is 60% of media "horse-race" coverage; it's 40% genuine likelihood-assessment by checking with statisticians and pollsters, and it's 60% just wish-casting. I want Joe Miller to lose because she was endorsed by Sarah Palin and I hate her, so of course that's what I think will happen.

They're not broadcasters, they're wishcasters. They're so partisan they can't even separate this function out from their driving rah-rah impulse.

Yeesh.

10 I can't believe how far Slate went out on the limb there. But I don't suppose there's enough shame in the whole organization for anyone to take note of how bad the call was.
The power of wishing. Wasn't Angela Lansbury in a fantasy movie that dealt with the power of dreams? Or was that Jiminy Cricket?

12 Hopefully the absentees don't break too hard for Murkowski. Seems like Miller's surge happened late and people who mailed in early might not be rifing the miller wave.

13 gah, rifing = riding

14 Seems like absentees always break for the more conservative candidate. But I get that idea from general elections with a D and and R, not primaries. I don't see why it wouldn't hold up, though.

16 Seems like absentees always break for the more conservative candidate.

Hope that holds true. I've just experienced the disappointment of too many King County elections where as more ballots come in - the conservative loses. Hopefully AK doesn't have the same track record.

Posted by: some wench at August 25, 2010 05:00 AM (uJBct)

17 Based on the numbers already, top of my head math , you'd have to have 10% absentee ballots (not very likely in a normal primary, but who knows in AK) AND that breaking 2/3 to Murkowski for a change in the election results

Posted by: JFH at August 25, 2010 05:00 AM (cPQlR)

18 According to the Alaska Daily News tweet:

"Not sure where confusion came from, but Division of Elections now saying they'll continue counting through the night."

Earlier they reported:

"Division of Elections says counting will stop at 12:30 a.m., resume in the morning."

Posted by: Jon at August 25, 2010 05:02 AM (4NDwx)

19 wench,
We're talking about Republicans not Dems, they don't have the Dem organization skill or experience at throwing close elections (no matter how corrupt you think the Murkowski's are)

Posted by: JFH at August 25, 2010 05:03 AM (cPQlR)

20 According to Alaska Daily News:

7,600 absentee ballots had been returned. The first count of absentees will be next Tuesday.

The Alaska Division of Elections said over 16,000 absentee ballots were requested.

Absentee ballots will continue to be counted as they trickle in on Sept. 3 and on Sept. 8.

22 What all the news outlets are deliberately avoiding is that even if Tea Party backed candidates don't get past the primary, they're going to pull enough support to pull the actual nominee rightward. They're ALSO driving massive turnout in PRIMARIES. Democrats should be shaking in their boots, even moreseo than now.

Could that be a record for sitting senators that are primaried?

Posted by: Smapty at August 25, 2010 05:12 AM (bAySe)

24 Yeah, I saw that Jon, but I really doubt we're going to get above 10K as the absentee ballots STILL must be postmarked before the election. Some of those are Dem absentee ballots, and the existing ballots would still have to be more that 70% to 30% to make the future ballots in play

Posted by: JFH at August 25, 2010 05:15 AM (cPQlR)

25 Politico wanted to call it over, too, because Politico was determined
to write the storyline that insurgents (read: Tea Party) went down in
flames.

Oh, no.

Not at all.

I just got done writing a condolence e-mail to "my guy" who lost his primary bid for a House Rep. seat to some guy who was very much a Tea Party candidate.

I had been hearing about Jessy Kelly, for months before "my guy" even entered the race, at Tea Parties.

(One major difference, here in AZ, which may end up being very salutary, at least in this environment, is that the credible major state and local Tea Party organizers refused to endorse particular candidates.)

I made a decision some months ago, in favor of a more established Republican State Senator to go up a against the incumbent Dem for a U.S. House Seat for a variety of reasons but one amongst them was my feeling that he was more ready to play in the "big leagues" than the "grassroots" guy.

Still. The enthusiasm (and frankly, word of mouth name recognition) was solidly behind the Tea Party guy simply because he showed up, pretty early and pretty often. I'm betting that "my guy" had him beat on access to funding too.

Honestly though, this primary was a goddamn embarrassment of riches. So many decent damn candidates, all at once!

Where the hell have you southern AZ (R's) been all of my political life?

People think of AZ as being some sort of deep-red conservative state, that should be an automatic gimme for the GOP but I don't think that it is.

Not counting the blatantly ethnically gerrymandered districts, I've not seen my local GOP even make an effort to field even one candidate in far too many local elections, never mind organizing some support for those who do run, if at least to counteract the teacher's unions.

It's like conservative leaning voters in AZ exist simply to vote (R) for national candidates and we can just rot in some 3rd world shanty right next to Mexico as far as the people in D.C. are concerned.

I'm not a lunatic, nor a racist, nor a bigot.

Certainly, I could never be classified as some sort of "purity conservative".

Neither am I some sort of unlettered, naif, unsophisticated in the workings of a too confusing, cosmopolitan, modern, global world.

“Or they fear the wrath of Obama, which, on Wall Street, by the way, feels like the wrath of Nixon.”

“…nobody wants to criticize this president other than the people who are paid to criticize — the Republicans in Congress and various news entities that cater to the right. You take your public life in your hands the moment you do.”

“It’s dangerous. The national media’s warmth toward the president and Congress extends to the business press so no one wants to draw the line to say “OK, the data is bad so we are going to get the GOP in and so we have to hope the data stays bad.” No one wants to say, “Goodie, we may be doing worse than we thought, let’s go buy stocks.” You will be nailed nine ways to Sunday by the adoring press.”

“It is amazing to me that no one will break ranks and say out loud what they say to me 10 times a day: “This president hates business, hates successful business people, and hates the basic way business is done in this country!””

No shit. I watched one of the primary counts one LD over and I was astounded!

The gal I liked got the GOP win but Jesus, is she so fucked!

Raul Grijalva got more Dems to come out and vote for him, in his district than he got Dem voters in Pima County to vote for any other office, up ticket or down, in the state or county by insane margins.

This creep doesn't even need campaign funds nor contributions over $3,000 dollars and he still gets almost 17,380 jackholes to show up and vote for his ass in an uncontested primary?

No!

Look at his district! Look at the precincts!

They neither voted up nor down ticket!

68% of these tools voted for him, exclusively.

The same guy who said that he was all cool with, even encouraged an international economic boycott on AZ, because that's what we so deserve for being so racist and stupid as to be Arizonans and not wealthy enough to live in D.C....

Sorry, as much as I adore Ruth McClung, she's soo fucked so long as she keeps fighting for this territory.

Never gonna happen, not in this district, ever.

I don't see how anyone can overcome stats like 17,380 voters for an uncontested Dem incumbent in a super-safe gerrymandered district compared to 10,754 voters total on the (R) ticket.

How the hell did Grijalva get even 10,000 people to show up and vote for his ass?

That's a fucking fascinating question.

It's gotta be organized fucking labor somehow.

The federal dollars going into AK are a myth from the liberals and the MFM, just like they are for all the other States. They like to add up ALL of the federal dollars and call it pork which is an outright lie.

This skewed counting hides the fact that States like NY are getting the lion's share of pork from a variety of sources. AK gets a lot of federal dollars because they have a lot of federal jobs since the feds own almost ALL the land in AK and there is a lot of military in AK. Those are not "pork" jobs. Sure Stevens and this scrunt brought in some pork but compared to some of the more blue States it is a drop in the bucket.

Time for the 30% Highly Educated White GOP to leave the room and go home to do homework since these Ruling Class Republicans are as out of touch with the American people as is President Barack Obama.

Even though AZ 25th is ONLY DEM +6, it is 50% Hispanic Mexican and Grijalva is a full-on amnesty loon and post-Mexican voters would vote for a rotting corpse over an Anglo if that corpse had a Hispanic surname.
It also has seven Indian tribes, and they typically swing about 85%+ Dem.
Yeah, it's an almost hopeless district that was created in 2002 and has gone Dem on every election since then. The best the Republicans ever did there was in 2002 (post 9/11 effect?) and even then it was 59% Dem.

Also...why do states not count absentee ballots until the end? If those are in early, why can't the be counted early? (Yes, I know...then the dems wouldn't know how many they needed to 'win')...but other than that.

But I don't know if the mailman counts all of the absentee ballots I get from the states I used to be stationed in, so I didn't want to attract attention.

Can't help being charmed though.

Not my fault.

I am just an innocent 28 year old shop-girl, wearing a subtly tight skirt, not terribly flattering glasses, and a high-piled hair-do connected to the third button on my blouse.

I dunno, I guess it could happen.

A gentle caress of my cheek by a sensitive, intense bookstore soul, could lead to the gentle brushing aside of my limiting glasses, to reveal my amazing eyes and the simultaneous cascade of my flowing hair and popping of the 3rd button on my blouse.

(No. In practice, that pretty much ends up a call to security, or a fight plan to try to crush some dude's larynx, if you have to go to your car alone.)

91 I don't think the Krautman could be counted in the "Repub" column. He is more of a Lieberman Dem. Support for Israel but likes big government.

As for why they wait until last to count absentee ballots it is because if the race is a blow away some States do not even count them. For example in the FL R primary it would be a waste of time and money to count the absentee ballots.

And me and Herr running on the Moron ticket??? If I am still around the next time Lindsey is up maybe I will.

96 New orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods rose far less than
expected in July and, excluding transportation equipment, posted their
largest decline in 1-1/2 years, according to a government report on
Wednesday that pointed to a slowdown in manufacturing.

The Commerce Department said durable goods
orders rose 0.3 percent after a revised 0.1 percent fall in June.
Excluding transportation, orders dropped 3.8 percent—the biggest fall
since January 2009—after rising 0.2 percent in June.Analysts
polled by Reuters had forecast orders increasing 2.8 percent last month
from June's previously reported 1.2 percent fall. Orders excluding
transportation had been forecast to increase 0.5 percent from a
previously reported 0.9 percent fall.

Frankly I'm going to watch Charles Krauthammer tonight on Bret Baier's show because it is definitely going to be interesting. Krauthammer had an interesting analysis pre-primary that Palin had the power to give candidates exposure but not the credibility to close the deal. 150 Well, now that Joe Miller has won (by the looks of it), The Daily Beast writes in Palin's Prey Lashes Out by Shushannah Walsh that it is "Mike Huckabee and the Tea Party" and just to drive the point home "which came to Alaska and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for
Miller mostly spent on radio and television commercials. The group sent
out e mails several times a day urging supporters to donate money.
Earlier in the day, Murkowski believed Alaskans would reject what she
saw as Miller’s negative campaigning and his help from outside the
state." But now it is also a personal vendetta from Sarah Palin, who has always hated Murkowski. The feeling was mutual when Lisa Murkowski, upon Palin's July resignation, released a statement saying she was “deeply disappointed” that Palin had chosen to “abandon the state and her constituents.” Add another RINO to Cuda's body count, regardless.

151 Jim Treacher a ka The Daily Caller is pointing out that what-her-name is Dave Wiegel's girlfriend.

Those two must really make the rounds gathering insight into the conservative movement in American politics.

152 Btw, this seems to be how Democrats are hoping to win this November, by framing everything as local matters aka the Ground Zero mosque, so that the opposition is portrayed as carpetbagging astroturf, locals are reminded who makes the sausage and nobody talks about how unpopular DC is right now. This upset in Alaska was a real blow to that narrative, because Sarah Palin is the hometown girl making good. But at least they could call her a vindictive bitch, which is a compliment coming from Democrats.

153 All I want for xmas is to see Miller crushed like a roach under the heel of my big ass saddle oxfords.

Dear Liberal idiot (redundant),

God doesn't answer the prayers of godless atheist cheesedicks who refuse to call His Son by His name Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and Santa thinks kids who don't understand the meaning of Christmas get a big lump of coal in their stockings. But maybe you can stick that coal up your tight, judgmental prudish ass and shit out a diamond next year.

Best wishes,
Bitter, Clinging, Racist Right Wing America Who Will Destroy You This Fall

156 I really didn't care about this primary, but I sure want to see Miller pull it out now sothis witch Gutierrezhas to EAT IT. Oh, and it's just delicious to find out that this "grizzly woman" is actually Dave Weigel's girlfriend!!
Who needs JournoList when you are actually fucking each other?

157 So does this mean that McShame will lose to the dem?

Posted by: curious at August 25, 2010 08:50 AM (p302b)

In the same Arizona where the Democratic former governor appointed to run DHS called veterans terrorists and the President is suing the state and a sitting Republican governor who want to see our border laws enforced? No chance. In a year where Republicans can pick up between 6-12 Senate seats including Harry Reid's, the Democrats should spend their money elsewhere. Hayworth losing the primary was their last shot at that seat.

158 #156, Krauthammer is wrong about Palin 9 x out of 10.

159 So, now, Murkowski's gonna go full "Zombie Suntan Charlie" if she loses?

Wonderful.

These RINO's don't take "drop dead" for an answer.

160 no, They're LYING, not wish casters. You assumed those polls were accurate. Miller himself mentioned that Alaskan pollsters are notorious at being wrong by wide margins.
