Debating Trig Trutherism

At the Journolist. The Daily Caller has the raw emails.

A sample, from Ryan Donmoyer, "objective" journalist:

Again, statistically speaking, I believe it is highly more likely that a teen mother would have a child with Downs than it is for a 44-year-old woman to conceive without fertility help.

As far as I can tell, the following is the circumstantial evidence, and not all of it is vetted:

1) Sarah Palin doesn’t look even remotely pregnant in photographs that are supposed to be her third trimester.

2) The state of Alaska yesterday removed official photographs of her the months that coincide with her third trimester.

3) Her staff was surprised to find out she was pregnant when she announced at 7 months.

4) Her teenage daughter disappeared from school for months, claiming mono during the time that coincided with her third trimester.

5) She opted to take a long flight after her water broke which probably isn’t consistent with anything any doctor would recommend. (But her daughter might have needed her).

6) She returned to work 3 days after the baby was born.

7) In undated photos, the daughter looks like she definitely could be pregnant. People who saw the daughter yesterday tell me that she def looks like she could be post-partum.

8 ) It’s far more likely for a teenager to have a child with Downs Syndrome than it is for a 43-year-old woman to conceive naturally.

9) Supposedly, the baby’s grandparents refused to issue any kind of statement when the baby was born, for whatever little that’s worth.

There was some pushback, but overall many of those participating in the conversation seemed to think the idea that Palin was covering up her daughter's pregnancy was, as the Mythbusters might say...plausible.

The thread also contains some important parenting advice from Dylan Matthews, whose name matches that of a researcher for the Washington Post.

I understand the impulse to dismiss this as non-news. But assuming the baby is Sarah Palin’s, her conduct was the equivalent of punching herself in the stomach. It’s gross, gross negligence. I still remember when a family friend delivered her baby, knowing from the amnio that it had Down’s, and the surgeries went on for days. The baby was declared dead, revived, etc., etc. It’s a horrendous process. It was hard enough for her at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the best hospital in NE north of Boston, but doing that in Wasilla? Doing it in Wasilla when she very well could have stayed in Dallas? That offends me. That sort of thing warrants a social services call.

So I’m inclined to believe that the girl’s the daughter’s, because Palin is an absolutely wretched parent otherwise. Believing it’s the daughter is probably the most flattering possible angle here.

Remember, though, Journolist is just boring shop talk. Nothing to see here.

If nothing else, this thread exposes the total contempt many in the media had for Sarah Palin. They were perfectly willing to believe the worst of a woman they had only known of for a short time. The only reason for their hatred was that Palin threatened the political fortunes of the guy they hoped would be elected president.

I've always wondered why Andrew Sullivan kept on the Trig story, even after the election. Now we know - it seems Trig Trutherism was kind of the norm among his peers. Sullivan was just more open with his conspiracy theory-mongering.

7 Downs Syndrome is rare in teenage births. It is common in 44 year olds! And plenty of 44 year old women have unassisted conception and pregnancy. A simple internet search will provide the data.

This is the stupidity of a journalism school grad who thinks that he is far, far smarter than he actually is.

Just because you 'believe it' doesn't make it so. As a matter of fact, that's one of the most stupid statements I've ever heard.

9 And notice the complete reliance on a false assumption -- the probabilities of a teenager having a Down's Syndrome baby versus a 40-something conceiving.

13 I believe, statistically speaking, that it is more likely that Trig Palin faked the Apollo moon landings than we will ever find a lefty with a functioning brain.

On this front, check the irony meter busting column from E.J. Effing Dionne in the WaPo today that breathlessly castigates the right (i.e., Fox) for propaganda and not news. Was that douchebag one of the listies?

14 Down syndrome increases when the mother is over 35... that's why all moms over 35 get amnio tests. Moms under 35 do not.

As far as flying home... She had 4 other children..and she is from Alaska.. she could have birthed the baby all on her own. Libs cant imagine woman that tough.

I don’t know about you guys, but I think we should let the left have these kind of ridiculous, intellectually empty stories. Let them waste what ever intellectual capital they have left on them. In fact, if there is a way to do it, we should encourage them to spend their time on them.

We waste out energy responding to, or countering their absurd arguments, imo.

Posted by: chemjeff at July 26, 2010 11:21 AM (Ps41e)

18 I've wondered if there's a conservative analogue to Journolist, and am now convinced there must be.

Every time focus sharpens on the racist and treasonous actions of the Osama Obama regime, some "pundit" drags out another Palin so-called story, thus drawing attention away from the important stuff and getting back on trivia, where they can natter away freely, unencumbered by any responsibility except typing in links correctly.

Someone, somewhere in Conservative Central has to be behind this. It happens constantly at Tepid Air, and apparently now here.

I don't give a shit about Trig, Track, Truck, Dogsled, or any of the other Palin children. Nor, frankly, do I give a damn about Palin herself, at least until the she stands up and renounces the Trailer-Trash Media. Watching her saga is worse than watching Huckabee on his TV show singing and playing with some tenth-rate country band or palling around with Zombie Robin Leach.

Posted by: Timbo at July 26, 2010 11:24 AM (ph9vn)

24 You have to understand the minds of liberals. They really believe they are the smartest people in the room. So when a threatening conservative woman like Palin appears, they concoct some story about how she must be illegitimate, a bad mom, a terrible person, etc., and they will actually delude themselves into thinking their story is absolutely unquestionably right. And because they are the smartest people in the room (in their world), nobody else has the authority to tell them otherwise. It is an exercise in psychosis if you ask me.

A note to journolisters who may not be aware of this: “Downs child”
is NOT an appropriate or sensitive way to refer to Palin’s son, who has
Down Syndrome. Please use “people-first” language here. I’m not at all a
fan of Palin, either, but as liberals and decent human beings, we
should be respectful in how we refer to people with disabilities.I think we should stop using this non-"people-first" language here at AoS ("people second" well, top five anyway.) and from now on they are not "Liberals". but voters who have Liberal syndrome. Not "Obama Supporters," but people who have obama support condition. and so on.

41 Just how sad isit when Ezra Kleinis the far more reasonable one of the bunch when he says, "Seriously, folks? Best case scenario, what’s your outcome here: Her daughter, hounded by the tabloids, breaks down that it was her child, and her mother heroically took on the burden and welcomed the disabled boy as one of her own? Palin’s relationship with her children — however they may have come to her — strikes me as pretty far out of bounds. By all accounts she’s a wonderful mother, and devoted to her fifth son. Leave this be."

52 From his Wiki entry, circa 2037: Trig Palin, First Overlord of the Conservative World Government, 2008 - present. His Grace, Lord Palin, was born in 2008, as the result of the union of an unknown, benevolent spirit (who some have dubbed "Sharkman" for obscure reasons)and The Conservative Godess, Sarah Palin. Todd Palin acted as "Second" in the conception process, much like in ancient days of yore, when a man facing a duel would have a second help him out.
His Grace was born with Down's Sydrome under what many on the now defunct (and exterminated - Yay!) left called "suspicious circumstances." I.e., it was alleged by these commie vermin that His Worshipfulness was actually the son of Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, rather than Her Rightleaning Perfectness, Sarah.
Little did the world know at the time the Exalted One was born, that he was actually an alien (not in the sense of being "illegal," but rather, as in "Other") from a parallel, eternally Conservative (and thus, perfect) universe where gold grew on trees, puppies could talk, and all were happy and content.
His Gloriosity eventually grew to manhood in the fullness of time, and ascended to power in ways unprecedented (and also not covered herein), after many years of fighting against the lies of insane lefties, the leading light of which was Andrew Sullivan, who is forever now known only as "Vox Gluteus Insanae."
It is written.

She was nothing short of brilliant. She, by far, outshinedObama in what weas his onlyasset..that he could give a good speech....that and the fact that he was clean..and had no discernible Negro dialect
I read the entire email trail this morning and it looks like the decision to destroy her was based on fear. Several of the Journolisters had extremely positive things to say about her performance.

83 The amount to which these reporters colluded is criminal. They should be fired.

This also reinforces Sarah Palin's great strength in a presidential election. She's already being torn apart by the media. The way I see it all the "frontrunners" like Newt and Romney think they're buddies with the media. Sure the reporters are dems but they'll give me a fair shake. I was invited to all the best cocktail parties. I sat on the couch with Nancy. I trashed Palin through an intermediary. McCain thought the media would give him a fair shake. And they did - until the primaries were over. Then they tore him apart. I'm not saying it was the sole reason for his numbers dropping but it was a big one. Any GOP candidate will have to face the media's fire eventually. Palin's numbers are competitive despite being trashed daily by the media. I keep hearing people say she isn't popular enough, or that the media will have a field day. But the media will have a field day with any GOP contender and if you take away the media support Huckabee, Romney or Newt will have in the primaries they cannot win. Not only will their numbers plummet but they have little experience facing the full force of the leftist media. When it comes to Palin, they've done all the damage they're going to do. She's a lot stronger a candidate than I've been giving her credit for.

85 I don't mind taking nutty conspiracies seriously. It's part of intellectual honesty to be willing to consider this shit, I guess.

But so much of Andi and Journolist's argument is based on Bristol being post partum, being ill from school, and the scandal of having a pregnant daughter.

And we know it's not possible for Bristol to be the parent of Trig. Most of the argument is gone now. All we are left with is Sarah Palin pretending to have a child for no benefit to her. This Down's likelihood issue actually strongly bolsters the logic of Sarah being the mother, too. The fact that someone could have easily come out and made millions selling this story also is strong evidence. It's not like Sarah has a huge circle willing to keep this secret... the GOP has tons of people who want to take her down, so do hospitals, etc etc.

Same reason why I don't mind seeing birther claims discussed. I think Obama was born in Hawaii, but it's OK to have the discussion even if it's an extreme kind of conspiracy. It's OK to ask if we have spaceships from Pluto at Area 51, or if Saddam helped terrorists learn to hijack planes. I think the solution to wrong speech is more speech, and sometimes you actually learn something amazing.

But Andrew probably can't abide a birther.

101 Downs Syndrome is rare in teenage births.
Rarer still are teenagers who get pregnant with one child who get pregnant again with a second 8 months later while they still have the first one in the womb. So rare, in fact, that it has never happened once in the entire recorded history of mankind. And no, to all you libertard fucknuts out there, it didn't happen this time either.
All on has to do is a take five seconds to look at the birthdates and this whole ridiculous notion that Trig is Bristol's son is easily debunked.
Trig was born to Sarah on April 18th, 2008. Tripp Palin, Bristol's son, was born December 29th, 2008.
So, all you little libertard conspiracy theorists out there, take out both hands and lets count shall we?
May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December.
See? See how many fingers your holding up? That's only 8 fingers, now isn't it? So Either Tripp was at least a couple of monthspremature and that was never reported in the media (ya, like that would happen), or somehow Bristol got pregnant with Tripp while she was still pregnant with Trigg.

Rick,

I think the big issue is whether Palin used her position, authority and
the tools of government to cover up a personal “shame.” When tied to
the ongoing debate about the firing of the state police head when he
wouldn’t fire her ex-brother in law, then we have a pattern of
governmental abuse for personal gain. And I think that is the only
reason that it should be discussed in a negative manner.

Exactly... what's so amazing about the democrats is their default pretend science. They always pretend to have some scientific argument to prove their points, such as trig trutherism or global warming or Iran not building nukes in 2007.And they seem to rely harder on this 'we're being scientific' when they have no case at all. That way, their insane paranoia rantings aren't coming from their imagination, but rather from a disturbing truth revealed by science. Of course, their science is just their imagination, though.Birther hysteria involves a lot of conspiracy from state level workers, similar to the Joe the Plumber harassment from state level workers. It also involves someone planting an ad in a 1960s paper. And Hillary screwing up the research (though Phil Berg, Hillary's attack dog, started this birther claim). It's extremely likely Obama was born in Hawaii, and yet that conspiracy theory is infinitely more likely than Bristol being Trig's mother. Like it or not, but Andi is extremely more demented than any Birther you meet.

168 If you birth in April and get pregnant in May, you start counting in JUNE. Seven months.
If you have a baby that is two months premature, it's not going to be the same size as a full term baby, and probably will spend time in the hospital due to probable complications, even if minor.
If it's probable that a woman is less likely to get pregnant statistically in her 40s without 'help', then what are the odds of getting pregnant TWICE at that age without help? They argue against their own premise.
If a woman is an athlete, she's going to look physically different than someone who is not or who is just a weekend warrior. Less likely to carry overall extra weight and they're going to carry it differently. There are those of us that look like dough boys and then there are the women that just have 'bumps'. They usually have strong abs. If a woman is long waisted, they've got more perpendicular room than someone who is short waisted and has no place to go but 'out'. So body type, shape, and exercise habits play a big role.
As to DS, my stats are dusty, but from the last time that I looked, the odds of a 20 year old having a DS child is like one in 2500. The odds of a 45 year old woman having one, 1 in 25. Amniocentesis is routinely recommended for women at the age of 35 because the risk of misscarriage and the risk of DS intersect at one in 250 at that point. Anyone from that point on is considering being of 'advanced maternal age'. Not old in a cultural sense but old in a birthing sense.
From an anectdotal point of view, I had two kids, one at 35, the second at 40. Both times in the first attempt. Some of us out here are reproductive rabbits and fly in the face of the stats. If you're menstruating, you can theoretically get pregnant because oftentimesovulation accompanies it. Just because there is a large infertility cottage industry, doesn't mean that there are women that cannot get pregnant on their own, and 'at an advanced maternal age'. I would also argue that having a healthy lifestyle like Palin, the odds of her having increased chances of being pregnant increase.
Pregnancy chances decrease as women in general age, but make no mistake, if you're one of the fertile ones, those stats mean jack when you're staring at a pink stink. The definition of menopause is when a woman hasn't had a period in a year. Being post menopausal at 44 would be considered EARLY. So if you have not completed menopause, you can theoretically still get pregnant. Even if your periods are starting to get irregular, if you ovulate one month and have unprotected sex, if sperm and egg meet, there you go...Words to the wise if you're in that age category. If you assume that you are probably less fertile and throw caution to the wind, you may end up with a baby that you didn't expect, because of all of the bad information that gets thrown around by the likes of the idiots that are the sparks of this discussion.
These people are seriously ignorant about the issue at hand and it's just about gossip mongering about someone that they personally hate. It ceratinly has nothing to do with medical information, they are sadly lacking in that regard.

183 Why, because she came home to have her baby?

For both of our children, my wife basically had a 'contract' with the obstetrician which included all the monthly, then weekly, then almost daily checkups, the delivery, and some followup visits. We paid a set amount for every visit, so that when the baby was born, it was all paid up. We didn't travel too far, because if we had to deliver with a different ob/gyn in another city it would have cost us another small fortune. Our insurance back then had very limited coverage for pregnancy. But then my employer covered husband, wife, and children with health insurance.

There's nothing strange about her wanting to deal with the same ob/gyn.

To me, it's all smoke and mirror diversion from the fact that we're supposed to believe that Barack's mom was flying halfway across the planet in her eighth month.

184 Perhaps something terrible could have happened on SPs ride home. Unfortunately for the left Trig is alive and well, loved and cared for. I always thought the real aim of ASs campaign was to somehow convince the world, and especially pro-lifers, that Sarah wanted her baby DEAD!!!

It's a shame that men expect someone Palin's age to be decrepit and infertile. There's nothing surprising at all about this woman being pregnant. I wouldn't be too surprised if she were pregnant again.

Mark my words: this is an attack I've heard from a Mittbot in person and I bet we hear it again. What if she's pregnant while serving as president? Oh No!

The left will love that one, too, even though it contradicts the trig truther crap.

Posted by: Legendary Film Star Rick Moranis at July 26, 2010 02:08 PM (dUOK+)

186 Trisomy 21 (Downs) babies are usually undersized, as well.

The rate of identifies Trisomy 21 pregnancies in a 44 year old woman is something on the order of 1 in 29, with live births about 1 in 40.

The live birth rate of trisomy 21 babies for a 15-19 year old is about 1 out of ever 1200 or so births, actually a little less than that.

43-44 yo women who are in good shape can and do conceive without aid, with a rate of about 38% in a year (assuming no birth control and good "coverage".

That's right. More than a third of women Palin's age will get knocked up in the course of a year, without help, if they are trying. ( no birth control, with regular sexual intercourse)

Posted by: SarahW at July 26, 2010 02:17 PM (Z4T49)

187 SarahW, the math is damning. It's just insane that the Andis are saying it points the other way around.

We're talking worse than 1000:1 odds of a Down's baby for a woman like Bristol, and, as you note, extremely normal numbers for any woman in Palin's age having a baby, and much better numbers for a healthy and active woman like Palin who has had several kids before (numbers are well above 51% likely in that case).

The more info thrown into the calculation, the more obvious it is that Sarah is the mother.

And that's taking a ridiculous theory seriously. Why would she make up a pregnancy? It's proven it wasn't to protect Bristol.

Posted by: Legendary Film Star Rick Moranis at July 26, 2010 02:21 PM (dUOK+)

188 Of course, the chance of success in a given month is rather low. If you keep at it, though, and have had several previous children, are in unusually good shape, don't smoke, and don't drink, and enjoy plenty of time with your husband, your chances go way up. You will be more likely to miscarry, and to have a baby with chromosomal disorders, Trisomy 21 in particular.

190 Oh fergawd's sake! This was then and is now a monstrous pile of crap sandwich. Let me start by stating that I am the mother of 4, who worked right up until 10 minutes before one of mine was born. I'm grandmother to several - and attended the births. And I am a medical professional very familiar with pregnancy, testing and the like.

The statistical chances of Bristol delivering a Down's child are so ludicrously small that such a thing would never cross the mind of anyone in the medical field.

The statistical chances of any woman over 35 having a Down's Syndrome child are significant enough that testing for Down's is recommended by virtually all care providers to women in this age group.

Birthing a Down's Syndrome child does NOT involve surgery, dying infants and so on. Whatever the reporter's friend's difficulties with her delivery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, they were not related to the fact that her child had Down's.

Women in their forties have been successfully conceiving children with no help from fertility drugs for as long as women have been conceiving children. The recent difficulties seen by so many women are related to venereal disease that has gone undiagnosed, thus scarring the fallopian tubes.

Once a woman has had several natural deliveries she has a pretty good handle on just how her labor is proceeding - better than the doctor in many cases. The leakage of amniotic fluid is not necessarily a sign that delivery is imminent. Things may prolong themselves for hours or even days afterwards.

Posted by: Granny at July 26, 2010 03:30 PM (jpld8)

191 The Mr. and I were watching "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" on TLC last night. Clearly, there are enough women who don't obviously show signs of pregnancy for TLC to make an entire TV series out of it. Many of these women are either grossly overweight or very fit - Sarah obviously falls into the latter category. Why exactly is it so far-fetched that Sarah Palin wouldn't have the stereotypical huge pregnant belly? Lots of the women on that show were also older - it wasn't uncommon for them to mistake pregnancy symptoms for signs of menopause. These liberals are clearly delusional or completely ignorant of reproduction, or both.

193 To ignorant one at comment 14.

NO, not all women over 35 have amnio during pregnancy.

My 37-year old wife didn't have it done, and while the doctor explained it to me, my wife had to calm me down when his implication was that we might abort the child. She saved the doctors nose.

My son could have come out looking like an iguana and he would have been loved 100%.

The liberals answer to most problems is to kill it and hide it. The ends justify the means. A lot of surprised people in Hell I imagine.

You know what is fun? Asking a liberal to log into the net so together you and them and can watch "Silent Scream". Squirmfest for our oh-so-compassionate crowd.
