General Alexander Meigs Haig Jr., Dead at 85

Somber update: Alexander Haig has passed.

Korea. Two Silver Stars. Bronze Star with Valor device. Seven campaigns in the coldest war. Vietnam. DSC and Purple Heart. An excerpt:

When two of his companies were engaged by a large hostile force, Colonel Haig landed amid a hail of fire, personally took charge of the units, called for artillery and air fire support and succeeded in soundly defeating the insurgent force...the next day a barrage of 400 rounds was fired by the Viet Cong, but it was ineffective because of the warning and preparations by Colonel Haig. As the barrage subsided, a force three times larger than his began a series of human wave assaults on the camp. Heedless of the danger himself, Colonel Haig repeatedly braved intense hostile fire to survey the battlefield. His personal courage and determination, and his skillful employment of every defense and support tactic possible, inspired his men to fight with previously unimagined power. Although his force was outnumbered three to one, Colonel Haig succeeded in inflicting 592 casualties on the Viet Cong... (HQ US Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 2318 (May 22, 1967)

21 From an old soldier's perspective, General Haig was a "soldier's soldier", the man you had every confidence in to do the right thing in a highly stressful environment. Old soldiers and government service seldom, if ever, get along and that was undoubtedly the case for General Haig. I'm sure he was as frustrated with government service as any man could possibly be. And I agree, his "in charge" statement was meant to show that despite the chaos of the moment, someone had the presence of mind to think clearly and to act accordingly.

22 What is little know is that Haig tried to get the Argentinias to back down over the Falklands. He tried to prevent the war that followed but couldnt get it done.
That said I think he played a major role in switching the emphasis from a peaceful solution to backing the Brits and Thatcher. Thought Reagan himself was the major force behind that decision.

Absolutely. Haig said nothing about taking over anything, as the slimy press had tried to imply. He merely stated that the White House was not in chaos or lacking appropriate leadership. The press' twisting of Haig's actual words (cutting off the actual quote is what most of them did) was just pathetic. His quote was:
"As of now, I am in control here in the White House, pending the return of the vice president."
As usual, Haig was only being factual and reasonable.

As far as I know, Sanford's a good governor and a good conservative Republican. Cheating and lying were shitty things to do, but I'm not part of his family. From my selfish point of view, speaking strictly politically, I want Sanford to keep governing and not give in to the Democrats and the pussy-Republicans who are trying to force him out.

Sanford not resigning set a precedent. It might have chipped away a little at that awful double-standard our side has to live by while the Left does whatever they want.

I hate to break it to you Jane, but when Comcast sells to somebody else, which they inevitably will, that new owner will scour the accounts for anybody getting free stuff. We had Comcast for years and got free movie channels and a friend of mine actually got free cable, every damn channel, but when Time Warner bought them out all that stopped, they actually came out to my buddies house and tore down his cable lines and threatened him with legal action. So methinks Comcast is just not very diligent in that regard while other companies are.
