Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | On the Record With Chuck Devore, Part IIIn the second part of my interview with Assemblyman Chuck Devore, we dug into some substantive issues out here in California. I wanted to get a sense of where the senatorial candidate was on recent state-level controversies before moving on to issues of national importance. The third part of the interview, which includes his thoughts on national issues including energy policy and illegal immigration, will go up tomorrow. [Editor's Note: the third part is now available here.] If you missed it, the first part of the interview, which was about election strategies, is here.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
THE ONE down to 45% on Rasmussen. We always knew this Emperor had no clothes. Now apparently he doesn't look good naked either.

I still expect support for Obama to increase today on Gallup. Gallup (the polling division of the DNC) will pretty much REFUSE to EVER show Obama below 50%, no matter how much they have to adjust their sample to make that happen.
They may surprise me, but, well,I would be surprised. Posted by: Bill Mitchell at September 01, 2009 09:34 AM (3QH//) 3

So far he sounds good on paper. The next question is “how has he actually voted in the past?”.
After all, both Mitt and Huck currently sound good on paper but their past records are liberal. Posted by: Vic at September 01, 2009 09:49 AM (CDUiN) 6
Manboobs will get him back up to 46%!

So far so good Gabe, very good job.
I would take issue with him on this though: Unlike most conservatives who hailed the Supreme Court ruling, I sent out a statement condemning it on the day of its issue, saying that what the Supreme Court has done by this ruling is once again a miscarriage of justice just like they’ve done in the past. It has laid the groundwork for the invalidation of the constitutional amendment because of this Fourteenth Amendment equal protection problem. I agree that the CA SC did this on purpose to pass the buck and let the feds do the dirty work but it will be their ruling which is overturned, not the ammendment. I don't see how a Federal Court can invalidate the ammendment over a bad ruling. In the end the 18,000 "marriages" will be reclassified as civil unions or whatever CA has which is what should have happened to begin with. Posted by: Rocks at September 01, 2009 10:30 AM (Q1lie) 8

Re: Prop 8, The Kalifornia Supreme Court purposely allowed same-sex marriages to occur prior to the vote on Prop 8. There was no other reason other than to cover their asses should Prop 8 be approved (which it was). This then set up the 14 Amendment challenge. The court could have stayed any same-sex marriages (IIRC, it was only 6-7 months later that the Prop 8 vote took place). This will probably wind up in SCOTUS. I can only hope the flaming liberals will see that any 14th Amendment problems were created by the court and therefore Prop 8 should stand.

The only piece of recurring, non-tax revenue that was in the budget was something I authored. It was a bill that would have opened up the first off-shore oil leases in California in 40 years. It passed the state Senate and then the Sierra Club and other radical environmental groups did a full-court press to kill it. They were able to succeed in the Assembly where it died, I think, on a 43-28 vote. So 43 no, 28 yes. There were a couple Democrats voting for it. And then, of course, the vote was expunged, which got me on Stuart Marty’s show and talking about that.
Gabe, can you expand upon that? The vote was "expunged". What's that mean? Posted by: Jim in San Diego at September 01, 2009 11:16 AM (H7Rlw) 16
Gabe, great job. Just don't start wearing a bow tie and staring at Obama's pants.
Posted by: Jean at September 01, 2009 11:18 AM (L64A6) 17
As to the expunged vote, an official voteof the legislature had the motion and the recorded votes removed from the record.
Why? the legislators didn't want a public record of opposing a revenue source. They hoped that the MSM would also not bring it up and they didn't. Posted by: Whitehall at September 01, 2009 11:23 AM (htrmr) 18

And that is one of the biggest problems I have with our legislature here in California, no one is held accountable for anything. The enviro wackos are going to send us under. People in Santa Barbara complaining of tar in the water blaiming the rigs offshore. When Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's expedition was exploring the coast in the 1500's, they wrote that in Santa Barbara, tar could be seen bubbling to the surface. That is how much fricking oil we have offshore, but no, we can't fucking touch it....... Posted by: Todd at September 01, 2009 11:44 AM (h4WsY) 23

That's what DeVore commands. You don't luv'himm, you don't whine or beg. You send The Man You Respect to the Senate to serve your interests in lower taxes, a strong defense, and smaller government. Think you'll get that from Carly? Do yea punk? Posted by: Whitehall at September 01, 2009 07:08 PM (htrmr) 26

Chuck DeVore is obviously a social conservative who believes in big government when it comes to moral issues -- continuing the wasteful, expensive "War on Drugs", legally discriminating on the basis of nationality, legally discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, etc.
He'd probably be mostly all right in an office that was strictly concerned with economic issues, but otherwise watch out for your civil liberties! Typical Republican, I suppose -- "I'm for limited government except when it comes to my moral agenda." Posted by: Starchild at March 25, 2010 08:39 PM (A3PZn) 29
Republican politician, I should say -- many grassroots Republican voters are getting less enthused about the big government social conservative agenda these days. The question is, how long will they continue to stick with a party dominated by people with views like DeVore?
