GOP Officials Just Can't Quit Making Racial Jokes About Barack and Michelle Obama

Funny ha-ha number one:

Rusty DePass is under fire for his Michelle Obama gorilla comment on Facebook. The gorilla comment has been since followed by DePass issuing an apology by saying “[t]he comment was clearly in jest”.

DePass, a GOP activist and former chairman of his state’s elections commission, wrote of the First Lady Michelle Obama on Facebook this weekend.

First, an aide to state Attorney General Henry McMaster had authored a Facebook post about the escape of a gorilla from Riverbanks Zoo Friday. DePass then posted the following response on Facebook:

“I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors - probably harmless”.

DePass reportedly told WIS News thereafter:

“I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest."

Um, yes, it was clearly in jest, which is immaterial. All jokes are "in jest," by definition. Letterman's tween-rape-fantasy jokes are also "in jest." That doesn't change the fact that some jokes rely on taboo, offensive, or over-the-line suggestions to make their "in jest" point.

Funny ha-ha number two:

Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin). The email depicts the Presidents of the United States with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.

I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the job.

...

“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

"Wrong button." Okay.

Eh, I don't feel like launching into a lecture. Either you think this is acceptable public behavior or you don't.

I guess I'd point out that the MSM, and a good fraction of the public, has this image of Republicans as racists, and some Republicans are far more to blame for this state of things than the MSM.

So, yeah, slam the MSM for bias and all that or for highlighting Republican scandals of this sort while giving Democrats a pass. There's truth in that. But no one should have any illusions that this stuff isn't exactly made up out of thin air, and we have a lot of our fellow conservatives and Republicans to thank.

2 Well, how about this joke then.

I was noticing all the talk about Michelle's arms. All of the flattering comments, all of the fawning praise. Yet, I wonder what the press would say if Laura Bush had arms like Michelle Obama.

I can see it now: President's Wife Does Steroids.

8 In before the inevitable racists show up to tell us that this is no big deal.
Seriously- what the hell were they thinking? Sure, jokes are just jokes, but when you are in a position to represent a group- the Republican party in this case- making even borderline racist jokes is not acceptable.
Fire the both of them- if not for the nature of the "joke",then for being too fucking stupid and irresponsible to belong in any position of responsibility.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at June 16, 2009 04:05 PM (plsiE)

9 I don't know if I would call them GOP "officials" - a legislative aid and a former elections commission chairman - but yes those were definitely tasteless and offensive and shouldn't have been said. You would never see the real Republican party leaders say those things or spreading those emails on facebook or whatever.
I would also consider the timing. After Letterman's "jokes" MSM seems to be saying "well, Republicans make racial jokes so there!"

Yeah, but any time this happens, the MSM elevates the offender into The Chief Spokesman For The Republican Party.

Remember Ted Haggard? He was some preacher who got caught sword-swallowing a couple of other guys, so the MSM made him out like he was a Major Figure of the Religious Right. I never heard of the guy before the scandal, and I'm a so-con, so you know how desperate the left and their MSM allies were to make sure the entire GOP got tarred.

Posted by: OregonMuse at June 16, 2009 04:17 PM (FnH/u)

30 Scrapiron, I totally agree that the descended from apes thing is a valid joke to make about folks who believe in evolution. However, it really needs to be done to white liberals in at least equal measure if one wants to make that defense.

Still this is nothing compared to where race relations are going in this country once Barry's approval drops past 52%. Because that will of course prove that we're not post racial after all (any more) and need more racial healing, best achieved by bowing to Barry. And that will occur when folks are least willing to take that crap any more.

42 To #8 Ido believe those are rasict and horrible jokes. Don't want you to think I'm racist because I said the thing about them not being GOP officials.
I didn't.
Even if they're not technically "officials", the point still stands.- one is a GOP activist and former official, the other works for one as an aidefor an official. If they do stupid, racist shit, it reflects not just on them but on the party and/or official they serve.
On my Offense-O-Meter, these jokes don't really score that exceptionally high (no "N-word" at least), but there was nothing at all to be gained in sharing them- but definitely something to lose.
And while I think Obama has turned out to be a gutless, naive, dishonest, cluelessand overall lousy President, he still is the POTUS. Even if one doesn't have much respect the man, at least a little respect for the position is in order.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at June 16, 2009 04:23 PM (plsiE)

43 I never understand even slightly racist jokes. That aspect of thought never enters my mind. Right now the GOP should be busy fighting the racism that has been caused by BHO. They shouldn't be adding to it. Racism, in all forms, is disgusting and only reflects the character of the person thinking it. It bolsters the group they are trying to make fun of/insult, IMHO.
Once I was in a store and my son was climbing on everything so I said, 'Hey monkey, plant it.' The non-white person beside me jumped down my throught and told me that I was a racist bitch and that I had offended her greatly. She knew I was talking to my son. She knew I was comparing him to a monkey because he was climbing. So I asked her what was wrong with comparing my son to an animal and she just kept up with her rant. I was so disgusted but I also felt extreme pity for this woman. She wanted to push me to the point where I would say something like that. Instead, I complimented her outfit, wished her a good day, and walked away.
I think that people are racist because they have no self-worth. But, I also think that some people need to find racism in the world to give them an excuse (in their own mind) for their unhappiness. I cringe when I hear black on black racism just as I cringe when I hear white on black racism or vice-versa. Unfortunately I have heard a lot more black on white racism lately. I refuse to listen to any of it.

Yeah, once again I am all over the place, and have forgotten my point, but hopefully you get my drift.

Posted by: Capt. Numbstick at June 16, 2009 04:24 PM (voIlD)

47 These guys (racist and/or stupid though they are) are NOT "far more responsible" for the racist stereotype of the right than the MSM. The MSM fabricated that out of whole cloth; the fact the some people actually fit the stereotype is nothing.
I repeat, nothing.
I mean, remember the whole "Bush hates black people because he caused Katrina" thing? Does this do "far more damage" to the conservative image than that? And there isn't even a reflected grain of truth in that smear.
Stories like this are a convenient illustration; without relentless and decades-long cultivation of that racist image, this story wouldn't be worth anything.

Posted by: Ella at June 16, 2009 04:25 PM (gQ4Zh)

48 So, yeah, slam the MSM for bias and all that or for highlighting

Trouble is, they're never going to go away. There are racist and sexist and anti-semitic pigs on either side of the aisle, or at least in some way associated with either side of the aisle. 95% of the time, the media will play up the ones on the right. All we can do is shame the ones who spout this crap unmercifully and make sure we highlight when the left does it as well.

No one thinks that. I personally know of a couple very loyal Dems who didn't vote for Obama based soley on his race. I don't doubt for a second that there were at least a few racially insensitive e-mails and jokes told amongst the Hillary camp during the primaries.
However it's much more likely to make news when it happens on the Republican side, and is going to be more damaging. That may not be fair, but that's the way it is- conservatives justcan't get away with the same things that get swept under the rug when done by liberals.

Posted by: buzz at June 16, 2009 04:37 PM (kwhut)

70 there's plenty of things for those worthless paid staffers of the GOP to talk about.

Such as Conyers wife taking a plea deal for corruption and bribery.

Detroit --Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers has been
offered a plea deal by the federal government in connection with a
corruption investigation at City Hall, four sources with knowledge of
the deal confirmed.
The federal authorities have told Conyers
they want an answer by the end of today, but the wife of U.S. House
Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers hasn't made up her mind,
sources said. The bribery-related charge that Conyers could plead to
carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, although she
probably would receive less time. Two sources who have spoken with Conyers said she is reluctant because she doesn't want to serve time in jail.

Conyers mostly ignored reporters when she left City Hall in an
unmarked car after 3 p.m. en route to her weekly television show "Ask
the Councilwoman With Monica Conyers." But when asked if she would
accept a plea, she murmured that The Detroit News was "full of (it)."
Conyers
seemed to briefly allude to the allegations during a live broadcast of
her show on WHPR-TV (Channel 33). She acknowledged that she's been in
the news, but challenged detractors, saying, "If you aren't praying for
me, then you are just adding to the problem."
"First and
foremost, I am a child of God," Conyers said. "All these things going
on right now, I believe in my heart, God will deliver me from."
Later
in the show, Conyers brushed off a caller who asked directly what she
thought about the "latest scandal" involving Synagro. "I don't have a
thought," she said.
Steve Fishman, Conyers' attorney, declined to comment.
Conyers
was not identified in federal court documents nor by developer Rayford
W. Jackson when he pleaded guilty Monday to bribery conspiracy charges
in federal court, but sources say Conyers is the official known as
"Council Member A." Jackson pleaded guilty to paying more than
$6,000 in bribes to an unnamed member of Detroit City Council in
connection with a $1.2 billion sludge contract approved in late 2007.
He admitted to using a courier on four separate occasions to deliver
bribes to "Council Member A" -- the same council member that former
Synagro official James R. Rosendall Jr. earlier admitted to bribing.
Conyers,
who showed up to the regularly scheduled meeting City Council meeting,
declined to speak to reporters and was primarily silent during the
meeting except to pitch a community event this afternoon. She looked
worried.
After Conyers left the meeting, Councilman Kwame
Kenyatta said he hoped those involved in the scandal are identified

The reason we can't "get away with it" is that there are far too many Republicans eager to be the enforcers of the lefts double standard. Look at the Trent Lott nonsense for example. Sure, Lott was a big government squish, but you don't smear your own to curry favor with your enemies. Unless you're the stupid party.

86 Put me in the no big deal camp. We're not going to lose any black votes. A poll a few weeks ago indicated that Obama's unfavorable among black s was a big 0%. I'm sure that individual blacks disapprove but the black vote belongs to Obama, period, therefore we have nothing to lose. By emphasizing this, we acknowledge that racism trumps every other issue. Obama and the Democrats have hollered racist about every disagreement with Obama and our response here tells them that it is working. Obam is corrupt, incompetent, dishonest to an extent that is ltierally putting the existence of the country at stake? No problem. His opponents are racists. If we falgelate ourselves we are merely empowering them.

And afterall, does anybody remember Crazy Jerry Wright's House 'o Hate? That was hateful speech and they got a pass on it. This is not.

I charge them with stupidity for which they deserve to be fired but that is all.

I sometimes think we should embrace racist speech but not racism. That would remove their biggest arrow form their quiver. And nmow would be the time to do it. We have nothing to lose.

110 Props for teh post, Ace. These folks should be canned.

Here's my problem, though; and it's been touched on by other comments- why is it that everything is suddenly RAAAACIST!!!111eleventy? As mentioned above Chimpy McHitler=Bush=acceptable joke vs. Michelle looks like an ape=horrible racist comment & proof that all Republicans are KKK scum (while ignoring that Byrd is a D).

Further, the MSM is demanding that "aids are terminated for a racist email" vs. reporting on "Palin's feud with Letterman over a joke"

The double standard is deafening. Personally, I despise political correctness. Yes, there are many jokes that lack taste & are innappropriate, but this should not be used as political leverage. All that is gained is the further dumbing-down of our society while the facts of which party has consistently supported racism, opposed equal rights & progess and currently has a KKK member in Congress continue tobe ignored.

'Guess we can't do anything about the first person if he's not employed for the GOP, but the attempt at humor was lame and stupid.

Now, as for comparing the FLOTUS to a mythical creature or space alien, personally I don't find the complaints that those jokes are inherently racist compelling... but, then again, I wasn't raised to believe that black people are inferior people (who might be more closely related to primitive organisms) nor do I have any knowledge as to which human race a Klingon or Wookiee is meant to resemble. (JarJar Binks, on the other hand, was the most racist depiction I've seen on a major motion picture in a really long time... What were they thinking?!) Same thing with Sasquatch. It's not part of any phylogenetic tree I know so I see absolutely no bearing on a Sasquatch and any particular human being or racial group.

140 Maybe someone with a better memory than I have could name the verses, but I recall a whole lot of teaching in church and Sunday School about how what was done in secret would be shouted from rooftops. And besides which, Jesus always knew. Always. No matter how careful you were to make sure no one knew your shameful secret, Jesus knew. The moral lesson was very clear... don't do anything that you don't want people to know about... don't say anything about anyone that you wouldn't want them to hear.

It's not a bad way to live.

And it's a VERY good way to stay out of trouble.

What fucking world do people live who think it's not racist to compare black people to monkeys or apes?

People who are firm believers in context?

You
can couch it in some sort of tit for tat over the Bush=Chimp thing

I'm not couching anything. Are you saying it's impossible for me to call Obama a chimp without being racist?

but
that requires either being ignorant of or ignoring hundreds of years of
racial crap in this country.

First, I'm not American (though I don't think it makes a difference; even if I was, I didn't enslave or discriminate against black people and thus do not think I should be held responsible just because my theoretical ancestors may have been guilty of it, which in reality they were not because they've been in east europe for as far back as I remember). But if you follow this logic and if you're gonna say I'm just using excuses to hide my racism, at least have the decency to answer my original argument:

1. Black people were also called stupid. As in mentally inferior (to white people in particular).
2. Due to the history of racism, which includes considering blacks to be mentally deficient, is it OK to make insults regarding Obama's intelligence? If yes, how is it different from calling him a chimp?

Posted by: Johnny at June 16, 2009 05:58 PM (xVKXy)

145 "What fucking world do people live who think it's not racist to compare black people to monkeys or apes?'

I am aware of this past, but in what fucking world has a "black" person ever been President of the United States? I am sick of this shit.

I think that the Michelle jokes are unacceptable, but if put in context, comparing Barack "I like to fling shit, shriek, and beat my chest like all liberals do" Obama to an ape is acceptable.

"As for the fact that blacks don't vote Republicans so who cares? Again,

148 On a complete tangent....

The idiocy that some races weren't as evolved as other races was the Global Warming of its day.

It was the height of science and reason, along with Eugenics, no one questioned the Truth of the scientific consensus of Evolution and Darwinism except for those very pesky Christians. I've heard, and would love to confirm, that compared to the brief mention of Evolution in the "Inherit the Wind" textbook, the bits of consensus wisdom about breeding better people and inherited traits in that textbook were significant.

And who would be so anti-science as to question it? Why so hostile against Science?

A little bit of understanding about inherited traits and people were all over that... sloth and moral weakness were considered inherited, poverty was considered genetic, and people who were not white European were *definitely* considered less evolved and genetically inferior. The "enlightened" in our own country were looking for (and finding) test cases to prove in order to force sterilization of the morally and mentally weak. The foundation of Planned Parenthood was to encourage Black women to stop breeding. The cases of sterilization without consent on Indian reservations is completely shocking.

This was SCIENCE.

And it was consensus... unquestioned by modern and forward thinkers who weren't afraid to embrace the truths Science gave us and reject the superstitions of the people who came before.

Of course it was all entirely an excuse to embrace pre-existing racial attitudes about superiority and inferiority and all under the unassailable auspices of Science and Progress.

As for not being an American I think that makes a difference. Not because you have some magical moral authority (my impoverished Irish ancestors who came here 40 years after the Civil War didn't own any slaves) but foreigners may not be aware of the societal meaning of certain things.

Certain insults are related to specific times and places. For example, the whole shoe thing in the Mideast was a new one on me. It's just not the same in the US.

Americans however know exactly the history of comparing blacks to apes and monkeys.

I think that makes a difference. Not because you have some magical
moral authority (my impoverished Irish ancestors who came here 40 years
after the Civil War didn't own any slaves) but foreigners may not be
aware of the societal meaning of certain things.

I am perfectly aware of the societal meaning of it, as it's not the first time it's popped up. I just think that the left calling bush a chimp overrides it. Just because some racists were using it as a racist slur doesn't mean me or others are using it for the same reason. I already explained why I'm using it: payback for bush. You can either accept it, whether you like it or not, or you can keep smearing us as racists just because you don't like it. And anyway, it's not much different from Ace calling Michelle a wookie (which are fairly ape-like) or a klingon.

Certain
insults are related to specific times and places. For example, the
whole shoe thing in the Mideast was a new one on me. It's just not the

I notice there's a distinct lack of an answer to the "obama is an idiot" question I asked, which is identical to comparing blacks to apes and monkeys in every relevant way.

I still don't buy it. Obama is black (in a social sense, not necessarily in a purely racial sense). There's no escaping that.

Given the history of race relations in this country, it's simply not the same as calling a white man a chimp

Try this...go up to a random white guy and call him a chimp, monkey or ape. Then try it with a a black guy. I'm willing to be you will get very different reactions because of who they are and what that means in the context of 200+ years of history.

Posted by: DrewM. at June 16, 2009 06:34 PM (iTt2X)

160 POTUS=fair game. exactly.

After the chimp cartoon controversy, I saw a commenter at the NYT say "You will have to pry out of my cold, dead hands my right to compare a politician to an ape". It is at that point that I was finally proud of my country : )

I'm going to say it: I don't think that Michelle Obama looks that bad (she isn't the hawtest as the press would lead you to believe). I think that the Obama's are more intelligent than most americans (white or black or whatever), I just think that Barack should've have taken more Math classes (and History classes, and classes in Constitutional Law) and that they, as liberals, are generally misinformed.

Thinking that someone is inferior because of the color of their skin is racism.

On that point, and I know some of you will think I am racist by even bringing it up (though it may just be ignorance, when did we start confusing the two?), but how is pointing out a salient characteristic racist as in the black background cartoon? What if the caption were "The Most Transparent Administration Ever"?

Posted by: blackrockmarauder at June 16, 2009 06:37 PM (GvgvT)

161 That's not context, it's justification.

They justification pretty much describes the context.

Dude A calls Obama a chimp.
Dude B calls Obama a chimp.

Dude A calls Obama a chimp because Obama's black.
Dude B calls Obama a chimp as payback for Bush.

See where the context comes in? The reason (or justification, if you will) of why you're calling Obama a chimp pretty much dictates the context.

Calling a white man a chimp simply isn't the same as calling a black man one.

I'm not calling "a black man" a chimp. I'm calling the Democrat President a chimp. His race is irrelevant.

Even
in post racial society (which is more an aspirational notion than a
likely future given human history), it's still simply not the same.
Yes it is. I agree that it's not a post racial society though, hence the double standard.

And for the third time, is it OK to call Obama a moron? If yes, how is it different from calling him a chimp in light of a past of America in which black people were considered dumb?

Posted by: Johnny at June 16, 2009 06:37 PM (xVKXy)

Which says what about my intentions and the intentions of others who call Obama a chimp? That's right: nothing. Meaning dictates racism.

So who is causing the problem here?

"because of who they are"

Isn't that a bit prejudiced?

Posted by: blackrockmarauder at June 16, 2009 06:41 PM (GvgvT)

164 Oh please, this is cause for excitement? If Michelle was white the joke would still be insulting yet somehow not rascist.
As for the second gag, are we going to retroactively have a hissy fit about the movie 'Hair' in which the same gag was used in a dance sequence in a darkened tunnel. Not to mention the endless Bugs Bunny cartoons and others of the sort using the same sort of gag. But do those not count because Bugs isn't black?
It's time to learn you can never win with people whose first instinct is to play the race card. Everything is somehow to be interpreted racially and you're always guilty. The only working reaction is to tell them to screw themselves if they can't take a joke. I refuse to walk on eggshells for offenses I never committed to people I've never met.

172 You realize that blacks take special offense to monkey/ape references

I'm not "excited" about anything. The only emotion I have right now is annoyance at your rush to flippantly call me and others racist over this. As far as I remember, the only time I actually called Obama a chimp was when I made a collage similar to the Bush one with different obama expressions next to similar monkey expressions (a collage that I seem to have lost, sadly).

And "blacks" routinely take special offense at a lot of things. Some consider any criticism of Obama to be racist. Some consider Ace's wookie/klingon jokes to be racist. Feel free to do that "call a white man/black man a wookie/klingon" test of yours to confirm it if you want. Most blacks are very sensitive to being called just about anything by white people and routinely take any attack on them as racism (and yes, I witnessed and experienced this routinely as I went to a mostly black high school and my city has a decently sized black population). If I went out of my way to not do anything some blacks might find offensive I wouldn't be allowed to call Obama anything at all and a world where I can't call obama a drooling mentally deficient cockholster isn't a world I want to raise my kids in. I don't call blacks as a race names. I don't call specific blacks names because of their race. I don't use insults that are explicitly racist (IE: the N word). That's all I should be reasonably expected to do.

party have no need to go near these lines.

I agree, not because I think it's wrong but because politicians need to be likable and stay popular with the idiot drooling masses who vote based on superficial appearances rather than substance and competence. However, the point I responded to was directed at people like me, not politicians.

185 I don't know what toby believes, except what he divines in his shit every day. But I believe this country gives us all the greatest opportunity to succeed, by taking from the productive and giving to the unproductive.

That's why us Democrats love to keep people on welfare. For the votes.

186 "What I'm saying is, why would you want to do this?"

I don't. But I am sick of being held intellectually captive because my skin isn't the right color.

And I don't think that portraying Barack Obama (or Edward Kennedy, for that matter) as a shrieking, shit flinging, chest-beating lib-oops, ape- should be off-limits.

Posted by: blackrockmarauder at June 16, 2009 08:37 PM (GvgvT)

187 OK, I'll come clean: I crave latino cock, mostly because it is less expensive than white cock. That is the specific reason why I, Moloch, am an illegal immigration supporter. Flooding America with twelve million illegal penises willing to be sucked cheaply might very well be the greatest thing that has ever happened in my life, hell, I "keep 6" at the border sometimes to help smuggle them into America.

I do admit I'm a bit embarrassed to be an illegal immigration supporter, that's why I'm so desperately trying to change the topic and try to paint all illegal immigration opponents as emittered angry white people. I'm an ethnic by the way, with a grudge against white people, in case that wasn't obvious.

So, to summarize, I, Moloch, crave affordable latino cock, and that is why I, Moloch, am a big, big illegal immigration supporter.

I'm sorry, I know the cartoons that you are referring to Drew, but in my mind there is a huge disconnect, conceptually, between a black person and an ape (hence the "probably racist").

It's like a little kid running around yelling hell and when his parents tell him not to curse he claims he's talking about the biblical Hell, so it's not a curse.

207 I don't understand you people. The libtards have done the following:
*an unrepentent klansman in lauded as the conscious of the senate
*jane hamescher puts Michael Steele in blackface and is invited to party at the white house
*several cartoonists draw Condaleeza Rice as a buck-tooth Aunt Jemima
*the prez of NOW wishes that Clarence Thomas gets high blood pressure and dies
*they hung Palin in effigy, and Obots wore "Palin is a cxnt" t-shirts at rallies
*rev Wright said "them Jews won't let Obama talk to me"
*Perez Lavanderia calls Prejean a b@itch and a cxnt
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. For all of this racist, gutter behavior, these people are lauded by their fellow libtards and get a standing ovation for their courage and audacity.

Two unknowns send a stupid joke and your knee jerk reaction is to note how conservatives bring this on themselves. Stop the handwringing. Maybe if y'all stopped believing that republicans are racists, then you could convince others of that fact. How about this? The next time someone calls you a racist, how about you get angry at them and tell them to STFU? My favorite response to libtards is "I refuse to be lectured on morality by gutter rats."

Just for the record, the Sharpton crowd thinks ALL whites are racists (basically any nonblack). The libtards just give them stuff.

We have to be quiet about Rev Wright according to party leader McCain and we hear the same refrain now. Why? When the other side acts like responsible individuals and show some respect I will respond. Till then I take great pleasure in acting just the way they do, actually I haven't made a giant paper mache doll nor attempted to firebomb a democrat meeting nor rioted when their leaders speak. But one lives in hopes that someday Hamas will acquire a small nuclear tactical warhead and deposit it in the midst of a Joy Behar laugh fest while the president yukking it up.

210 I loathe white people, but good god I love white cock. I'm not sure what I'm doing at a nearly conservative blog, seeing as how I'm a race hustling faggot ethnic who supports illegal immigration, but...oh, right, white people support the GOP, and I go where white cock goes.

I'm sort of the white man's psycho ex girlfriend, simultaneously hating the white man and craving his cock, following him everywhere he goes screaming iloveyouihateyouiloveyouihateyou. I can't compete with the white man, so naturally I support race quotas.

214 the fuck up morons. This political correctness/ skating on thin ice bullshit has actually inhibited racial/political interaction. It may be difficult, maybe impossible, to have honest discourse while adhering to this PC nonsense. This old person is going to present one of many areas - comedy. Go back to the 1960s, 70s and maybe in the 80. Listen to early Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, very early Lenny Bruce, Redd Foxx and many others. Ah! They would have been shunned, humiliated and banned (well, some were banned and arrested) in the current brave new world. Social and political satire made people laugh and think. You might not have agreed with everything said but these words allowed for civil discourse and respect of several views, much more so than with the PC Police, the fake reverends and especially the loony left. In fact, almost everyone united against the far, far let because they knew they were nuts. Hum... is the far left responsible for today's climate, which, in my opinion, wanted to create a divide as wide as an ocean between different groups. There was much more tolerance as opposed to the "you are with us or against us" mentally now. I suspect the loons studied "Rules for Radicals" because the climate of hate and name calling was one of the main blueprints for 'tards to take over. Bright side - let them rant and rave and hope "joe six pack" figures out that they are insane.

216 I think you're way more likely to hear Democrats targetted for spouting sexist stuff than using racist language. And the MSM does actually call them on it. Remember both Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton's treatment in the recent primaries and election? And people on both sides of the aisle were pissed. And the MSM did comment on it. Hell, Saturday Night Live was doing skits about it.

Posted by: BuckNutty at June 16, 2009 04:04 PM (ZY6M2)
Nah. sasquatch is used as an insult to someone's hairiness and/or overly creature-like physical characteristics.
Monkey/ape/whatever has been used as a racist term to describe black people, at least in the past, so totally different.
There's no way to interpret Rusty DePass' "joke" as anything but racist. Guy's a douchebag (and not even funny either)

Posted by: mandible claw at June 17, 2009 05:20 AM (QKrrS)

218 Did Charles Johnson write this post? WTF?

The first "joke" was just stupid. But the second joke (actually, a forwarded email) was pretty funny, in my opinion.

Do you honestlybelieve that Congressman Bobby Rush (a former Black Panther) and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee (just to name two black elected officials off the top of my head) don't have black stafferswho regularly makejokes about white peopleand Asians, or forward the occasional Black Nationalist email? Of course they (almost certainly) do. But that wouldn't be considered "newsworthy" to the MSM.

Hell, the fact that the (black) Attorney General of the United States (who was appointed by a black President who attended a racist and anti-Semitic black church for 20 years) recently overruled career lawyers and dismissedlegal actionagainst armed Black Panther thugs who harassed white voters with racial slurs at a Pennsylvania polling place last November isn't considered "newsworthy" to the MSM either.

We need to stop this counter-productive in-fighting over bad jokes and politically-incorrect emails forwarded by people no one has ever heard of, and focus on the fact that the current administration is, you know, runningour Constitution through a fucking shredder.

Posted by: Andy at June 17, 2009 07:47 AM (vQdwt)

219 Ok, racist jokes are a sad reality of life -- probably never going to get rid of them. Just like ethnic jokes, gay jokes, joking about women -- never going to go away, might as well just acknowledge that they exist, that they probably won't go away, and it's incredibly crass poor manners to be saying them in public. Give the rude ass people who think it's somehow okto act like gutter snipes and not be polite a major slap down for just that -- being uncivil, entitlementcreeps.
What I findunacceptable about this is that two people working for a political party, knowing full well that it was a stupid thing to do and just rude as freaking hell, went ahead and pulled this shit. For being rude, stupid mofos they should be censured and perhaps fired. And then anytime the party of the opposition pulls this sort of shit, they should get called on the carpet too, in exactly the same manner: like the oreo incident with Michael Steele, the allusion to a very lame ass "beaner" joke by our resident, the comments concerning "those Joos" or calling Italians "garlic noses", and just the presence of Sen. Robert Byrd. And that's just the tip of the iceberg -- the misogyny is pretty rife too.

Posted by: unknown jane at June 17, 2009 09:03 AM (EpmMs)

220 I know I'm in the minority here, but I just don't see "racist" jokes as some sort of horrific social crime. They are, after all, JOKES.

There is a difference between someone saying something politically-incorrect in jest about a black politician, and, say, a neo-Nazi rally where people are seriously calling for the reinstatement of slavery and referring to blacks as sub-human animals.

One is a joke, the other is serious. That's the difference. Get it?

And again, if you don't think that blacks make fun of whites and Asians on a semi-regular basis, you don't know what the hell you are talking about. The difference is that no one seems to give a shit about "racist" jokes against whites and Asians made by blacks, whereas everyone goes all "Two Minutes Hate" against any white person who says anything politically-incorrect about blacks.

Why this double-standard? It's largely because of the MSM. They have conditioned the sheeple to react one way in one scenario, while reacting in a completely different way in another scenario. The MSM is the problem. Let's fight the real enemy, not each other.

222 I don't get why the cartoon was ' racist'?

Doesn't 'racist' mean 'hateful'? This joke references race, but it doesn't seem hateful to me, am I wrong?

The Michelle Obama was in bad taste, but if the Dems are so very pro-evolution, anti-creation- AND if Michelle has chosen to 'put herself out there, on the national stage( just like the Palins). The according to the lefty line of thinking doesn't Michelle then DESERVE the joke??

The left assures us that Sarah, Bristol, and Willow Palin all deserve the 'slut, and knocked up' jokes because the right espouses abstinence and morality, and because they 'put themselves out there'.

I don't get the difference.

Does the mere fact of being black allow for no humor at all? If I were the target of either of these 'racist' jokes, I would not be offended. If the cartoon were a group of black folks on a white background with only eyes showin' I might not laugh my ass off, but I wouldn't be OFFENDED.

I didn't find the Sarah is 'slutty looking' funny- but I wasn't OFFENDED.
