Inappropriate Relations With Those Firms: Charges of White House Threats to Persecute Chrysler Creditors Corroborated

Remember, the White House has categorically denied this. As Clinton denied Lewinsky.

But just as in that case, the back-up defense is already being pushed; It's no big deal, liberals are arguing. What's a little hard-ball? So as usual we have two inconsistent defenses at the same time:

Of course Obama wouldn't do this; it's too egregious to even credit as being possibly being true.

and:

Of course Obama did do this; that's why we elected him.

I wish one of these days they would limit themselves to just one defense.

Anyway:

Although the focus has so been on allegations that the White House threatened Perella Weinberg, sources familiar with the matter say that other firms felt they were threatened as well. None of the sources would agree to speak except on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of political repercussions.

The sources, who represent creditors to Chrysler, say they were taken aback by the hardball tactics that the Obama administration employed to cajole them into acquiescing to plans to restructure Chrysler. One person described the administration as the most shocking "end justifies the means" group they have ever encountered. Another characterized Obama was "the most dangerous smooth talker on the planet- and I knew Kissinger." Both were voters for Obama in the last election.

One participant in negotiations said that the administration's tactic was to present what one described as a "madman theory of the presidency" in which the President is someone to be feared because he was willing to do anything to get his way. The person said this threat was taken very seriously by his firm.

The White House has denied the allegation that it threatened Perella Weinberg.

They both voted for Obama. Proof again of the truism that the government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take everything away.

Thanks to Anti-Harkonen Freedom Fighter Geoff.

More Intimidation: Perella Weinberg feels the heat, and asks Tom Lauria to start "no commenting" everything.

Note his comment at 3:00 -- "I'm sure if people keep pressing, the truth will come out."

Ah, there's the rub. Who in the press corps will press? A few here and there. But by and large the press will allow this to slide. After all, they have to conserve their editorial resources for the time when Obama sics them on a creditor who won't play ball.

Thanks to WTF Capital Investments.

Obama = Nixon: "The madman theory" was invented either by Kissinger or Nixon or both, and used by Nixon. Nixon's idea was to scare the North Vietnamese into a truce by having the word put out that Nixon was crazy, he might just use the bomb, everyone at the State Department is worried sick about his stability, etc.

Good to see Bammy has found a good use for it.

2 Why is it that every businessman that has walked into the White House and had a conversation that he later publicly discusses has immediatly been labeled a liar by the White House? There is a pattern here, anyone who disagrees with The One is a liar.

8 The Democrats sound a lot like small children. They show up with chocolate on their hands and face before dinner and you ask them where they got the cookie. They deny ever having eaten it until you show them the mess on their face and hands, where they promptly blame their sibling for giving it to them. This is especially tricky when they're only children.

I noticed this also on a report about Obama's "only people making over $250,000/yr will see a tax increase." They were interviewing people where they were making that much but not exactly living the sweet life. Basically due to their cost of living, and it didn't seem like they were in excessively large houses either. They were in the I voted for Obama boat, and weren't all that happy that he had classified them as the rich that gets to bend over for his policies. I don't think it was enough to get them to change their minds on him though, which is really amazing to me.

BTW - Off Topic:

I've run into a big problem at the Rotten Tomatoes Off Topic Forum:

http://tinyurl.com/d924mt

There is a troll there that is 'policing' the board for ANYBODY that makes a pro-military comment on ANYTHING, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He claims he is a former Army Vet that served in 'the Iran-Iraq War' and in the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

He is '66% disabled with Gulf War Syndrome'. He lives in Germany at present, and regularly regales the board with tales of his socialistic free 'health care' and the great big check he gets from Uncle Sam every month for being disabled.

He is relentlessly pursuing every conservative on those boards ESPECIALLY those who make pro-military comments and either:

1. attacking them for not having enlisted in the Military

or

2. if military service is claimed, he'll begin tirelessly demanding information such as MOS, DD214 stampings, VA paperwork, etc. etc.

I ended up getting into a flame war with this guy .

Rather than simply admit I was deaf and take the 'neo-con chickenhawk' treatment, I lied. I told the guy I had been in the Marines.

Oooh. Big mistake. It took him less than 3 questions to expose me. Yes, yes, I know I shouldn't have done it, lie to an internet troll and all. It was embarrassing.

Still, I've seen him relentlessly go after several other people the past few weeks.

Apparently this guy has done this to several conservative posters; the moment ANYBODY makes a pro -military comment they get the "You're just another neo-con chickenhawk that never served" attack or the "Oh you claim to be a vet eh? Prove it!" attack. He practically goads people into lying to him then calls them on it. He does seem to have a deeply detailed knowledge of military matters.

Since this guy has taken it upon himself to personally vet EVERY SINGLE PERSON that shows up on that board to post as a conservative so he can give them either the 'coward chickenhawk' or 'fake vet' treatment, I'd like to steer some actual conservative vets his way.

Any takers?

p.s. - I DON'T have to tell you this guys screen name. Just post something related to current events that even remotely identifies you in the Off Topic Forum as either a conservative, or even worse - a conservative military vet - and trust me. HE WILL FIND YOU.

85 I really question the accuracy and the methods used for the polls that show astronomical approval ratings.
I haven't seen any astronomical approval ratings. By all polling accounts Obama is about as popular as W was at this stage. I don't know where the idea comes from that he's hugely popular, unless it's the impression given by all the fawning press he gets.

92 Related, tangentially, to the Chrysler situation, why isn't there more curiousity about how disconnected the stock market gains/losses now seem to be from what is actually going on? Now ain't looking too rosy financially, and given the news about Chrysler, the stress tests, what happened to BOA, the Chinese buying less treasury bonds, and the new taxes on overseas profit for business, as well as a bunch more companies teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, the future ain't too bright either so there isn't really a good explanation in my mind for why the market shot up at the end of last week.

Seeing as how Obama and friends have already given trillions of dollars to those "rich bastards", who were also Obama contributors,I have a hard time feeling too sorry for the poor things. But you cry yourself to sleep over them if you like.

94 Oh I'm sure it will come out, sure it will. The press will get right on that.

I understand their position, I really do. President Obama must be protected. Think of it this way: if a popular conservative president took office after 8 frustrating years of Obama in which he did what you considered damage to the country and its reputation, its very soul, how bad would that president have to get before you'd turn on him? How much would you put up with before you started reporting the bad stuff?

For those of us with integrity, not much at all, but if your entire worldview is caught up in who is in office and what political party has power in government, that line can get pretty distant.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 05, 2009 02:01 PM (PQY7w)

95 When you hit people in the pocketbook, it's personal, and Bammer just made it personal with a lot of influential folks. Lots of political liberals are only liberal as long as it doesn't cost them anything -- once the Feds put on the fiscal hurt, the liberal scales fall away.

Remember, this whole Chrysler deal is mainly a warm-up act for the big GM bankruptcy yet to come, and Bammer already fucked it up by putting the skeer into senior bondholders. Obama was just trying to scratch the backs of his Labor constituents in the good old Chicago way, but it turns out that political patronage at this level has some pretty ugly fallout. Hedge funds aren't like banks: they're not going to kiss Uncle Sam's ass. They have a fiduciary duty to their clients (as do banks, but they're rotten with conflict-of-interest problems due to TARP). And senior debtholders have good reason to think they'll do better out of a Chapter 7 re-org than they will out of any government-mandated cramdown. (Does anyone here think the UAW can credibly return an automaker to profitability, given the huge burden of retiree pensions and benefits -- and the UAW's complete unwillingness to cut those benefits?)

And this whole Chrysler/Fiat thing is a joke in itself. The notion that Fiat will somehow provide Chrysler with some kind of creative or financial leverage going forward is just ludicrous. Chances are that both companies will be back in bankruptcy before long.

Bammer has essentially declared war on private businesses with this act. No one is going to want to take Federal money now for fear that it will bring them under Bammer's iron heel, and bondholders are probably scrambling to buy bond-insurance this very moment. (Remember that whole AIG counterparty fiasco a few months ago? Get ready for a repeat.) It'll also be interesting to see what happens to Chrysler in bankrupcy court -- I have a feeling that Bammer's 30-60 day window is way, way off the mark.

But the Chrysler drama is interesting only as prologue -- the real interesting fireworks are going to be in the GM bankruptcy. I suspect that lots of senior debt-holders are going to tell Bammer and the boys to fuck right off.

105 Another thing that's pissing businesspeople off is Bammer's intent to take away offshore tax shelters. Bammer again displays a colossal misunderstanding of how multinational corporations work: all this will do is drive more big corporations' HQs overseas. And I'm sure the Swiss, for example, would be glad to have them.

This is a dick move on another level, too; it means that Bammer has no real intention of implementing real tax reform. Thus, a business is not only encumbered by a Byzantine, confiscatory, and contradictory tax-code; it's also being demonized for trying to reduce that tax-burden without relocating to another jurisdiction.

110 92-PGIS- so there isn't really a good explanation in my mind for why the market shot up at the end of last week.

"Further, this rally has all the earmarks of a major short squeeze. Regulators have recently (and correctly) been enforcing short selling rules that require stock to be delivered and settled on short trades. This may be a one-time event. When the short squeeze is over, the buying will stop and the market will drop. Remember, it takes buying and a lot of it to move a market up, but only a lack of buying to create a bear market."- John Mauldin, Pres Millennium Wave Advisors

129 its a little long and dense, but here's one man's honest defense of his hedge fund brethren vis a vi Obama's mob tactics:

Unafraid In Greenwich Connecticut
Clifford S. Asness
Managing and Founding Principal
AQR Capital Management, LLC

The
President has just harshly castigated hedge fund managers for being
unwilling to take his administration’s bid for their Chrysler bonds. He
called them “speculators” who were “refusing to sacrifice like everyone
else” and who wanted “to hold out for the prospect of an unjustified
taxpayer-funded bailout.”

The responses of hedge fund managers
have been, appropriately, outrage, but generally have been anonymous
for fear of going on the record against a powerful President (an
exception, though still in the form of a “group letter”, was the superb
note from “The Committee of Chrysler Non-TARP Lenders” some of the
points of which I echo here, and a relatively few firms, like
Oppenheimer, that have publicly defended themselves). Furthermore, one
by one the managers and banks are said to be caving to the President’s
wishes out of justifiable fear.

I run an approximately twenty
billion dollar money management firm that offers hedge funds as well as
public mutual funds and unhedged traditional investments. My company is
not involved in the Chrysler situation, but I am still aghast at the
President's comments (of course these are my own views not those of my
company). Furthermore, for some reason I was not born with the common
sense to keep it to myself, though my title should more accurately be
called "Not Afraid Enough" as I am indeed fearful writing this... It’s
really a bad idea to speak out. Angering the President is a mistake
and, my views will annoy half my clients. I hope my clients will
understand that I’m entitled to my voice and to speak it loudly, just
as they are in this great country. I hope they will also like that I do
not think I have the right to intentionally “sacrifice” their money
without their permission.

Here's a shock. When hedge funds,
pension funds, mutual funds, and individuals, including very sweet
grandmothers, lend their money they expect to get it back. However,
they know, or should know, they take the risk of not being paid back.
But if such a bad event happens it usually does not result in a
complete loss. A firm in bankruptcy still has assets. It’s not always a
pretty process. Bankruptcy court is about figuring out how to most
fairly divvy up the remaining assets based on who is owed what and
whose contracts come first. The process already has built-in partial
protections for employees and pensions, and can set lenders' contracts
aside in order to help the company survive, all of which are the rules
of the game lenders know before they lend. But, without this recovery
process nobody would lend to risky borrowers. Essentially, lenders
accept less than shareholders (means bonds return less than stocks) in
good times only because they get more than shareholders in bad times.

The
above is how it works in America, or how it’s supposed to work. The
President and his team sought to avoid having Chrysler go through this
process, proposing their own plan for re-organizing the company and
partially paying off Chrysler’s creditors. Some bond holders thought
this plan unfair. Specifically, they thought it unfairly favored the
United Auto Workers, and unfairly paid bondholders less than they would
get in bankruptcy court. So, they said no to the plan and decided, as
is their right, to take their chances in the bankruptcy process. But,
as his quotes above show, the President thought they were being
unpatriotic or worse.

Let’s be clear, it is the job and
obligation of all investment managers, including hedge fund managers,
to get their clients the most return they can. They are allowed to be
charitable with their own money, and many are spectacularly so, but if
they give away their clients’ money to share in the “sacrifice”, they
are stealing. Clients of hedge funds include, among others, pension
funds of all kinds of workers, unionized and not. The managers have a
fiduciary obligation to look after their clients’ money as best they
can, not to support the President, nor to oppose him, nor otherwise
advance their personal political views. That’s how the system works. If
you hired an investment professional and he could preserve more of your
money in a financial disaster, but instead he decided to spend it on
the UAW so you could “share in the sacrifice”, you would not be happy.

Let’s quickly review a few side issues.

The
President's attempted diktat takes money from bondholders and gives it
to a labor union that delivers money and votes for him. Why is he not
calling on his party to "sacrifice" some campaign contributions, and
votes, for the greater good? Shaking down lenders for the benefit of
political donors is recycled corruption and abuse of power.

Let’s
also mention only in passing the irony of this same President begging
hedge funds to borrow more to purchase other troubled securities. That
he expects them to do so when he has already shown what happens if they
ask for their money to be repaid fairly would be amusing if not so
dangerous. That hedge funds might not participate in these programs
because of fear of getting sucked into some toxic demagoguery that ends
in arbitrary punishment for trying to work with the Treasury is
distressing. Some useful programs, like those designed to help finance
consumer loans, won't work because of this irresponsible hectoring.

Last
but not least, the President screaming that the hedge funds are looking
for an unjustified taxpayer-funded bailout is the big lie writ large.
Find me a hedge fund that has been bailed out. Find me a hedge fund,
even a failed one, that has asked for one. In fact, it was only because
hedge funds have not taken government funds that they could stand up to
this bullying. The TARP recipients had no choice but to go along. The
hedge funds were singled out only because they are unpopular, not
because they behaved any differently from any other ethical manager of
other people's money. The President’s comments here are backwards and
libelous. Yet, somehow I don’t think the hedge funds will be following
ACORN’s lead and trucking in a bunch of paid professional protestors
soon. Hedge funds really need a community organizer.

This is
America. We have a free enterprise system that has worked spectacularly
for us for two hundred plus years. When it fails it fixes itself. Most
importantly, it is not an owned lackey of the oval office to be scolded
for disobedience by the President.

I am ready for my “personalized” tax rate now.

Well do not make the mistake of thinking that large corporations are capitalist. They tend to be more monopolistic than anything else. Corporations get along fine with statist regimes as they benefit from legally enforced monopolies.

149 Posted by: Travis Well do not make the mistake of thinking that large corporations are capitalist. They tend to be more monopolistic than anything else. Corporations get along fine with statist regimes as they benefit from legally enforced monopolies.IBM and Microsoft are good examples of the monopolistic tendencies I am talking about.

I'm talking about individuals like Clifford Asness Obama supporter and the very people this thread is talking about who -- well, see my #130. Can't have too many cuss words.

But each time, she returned to Vancouver feeling disappointed.
Finally she decided that she could not play that game any longer. <a href="http://www.myshoess.com">puma mens shoes</a> Therefore, she confronted him and professed that after all those years, he was still the only man that she had ever loved. <a href="http://www.myshoess.com">mens puma shoes</a>Although the guy knew of her feelings for him, he was still taken back and have never expected her to react that way. Then, he came upon one of his many girlfriends whom he once requested to pose as his steady. She was slightly tipsy..... must be from the whiskey on her hand.
