Obama's Spokesman Gibbs: We Just Don't Have the Time to Patrol the Stimulus for Wasteful Spending
Update: Obama's Inaugural Promise to Spend the Public's Money Wisely Already Broken

We need to act. Now.

Do something, even if it's stupid as fuck. Obama and the Democrats have a plan for the economy: They're going full-on retard on it, coming at it like a whirlwind of badly-aimed punches and tapioca-studded drool. Giving it their full retard strength.

Thanks to CJ.

A Forty-Year Wish-List: Democrats are wasting no time wasting all the money they were prevented from wasting since Reagan.

This has probably already been linked, and it repeats most of what you know. But still. Repetition is sometimes useful.

In selling the plan, President Obama has said this bill will make "dramatic investments to revive our flagging economy." Well, you be the judge. Some $30 billion, or less than 5% of the spending in the bill, is for fixing bridges or other highway projects. There's another $40 billion for broadband and electric grid development, airports and clean water projects that are arguably worthwhile priorities.

...

Add the roughly $20 billion for business tax cuts, and by our estimate only $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus. And even many of these projects aren't likely to help the economy immediately. As Peter Orszag, the President's new budget director, told Congress a year ago, "even those [public works] that are 'on the shelf' generally cannot be undertaken quickly enough to provide timely stimulus to the economy."

...

This is supposed to be a new era of bipartisanship, but this bill was written based on the wish list of every living -- or dead -- Democratic interest group. As Speaker Nancy Pelosi put it, "We won the election. We wrote the bill." So they did. Republicans should let them take all of the credit.

Not only is the money being pissed away now, the bill commits us to pissing away future dollars, too. The nice thing about fixing a bridge is that once it's fixed, there is no ongoing demand for additional federal dollars every year.

But the crap the Democrats are spending your money on are, of course, intended to be -- and will become -- permanent additions to the federal budget. And will increase every fucking year.

All Obama Promises Come With an Expiration Date, Part 427: From his inaugural address:

And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account -- to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day -- because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

That was a week ago.

Thanks to Slublog for that.

And Fish wonders if this gives him the license to go full-on Geithner on his tax returns:

[GIBBS:] "If we get focused on this number and that number, and two-one-hundreths of one percent of the spending...

Right on Gibbs, and when I complete my 1040 this year, I will also not focus on this number and that number. It's just not important as you so in-eloquently stated. Gibbs, you unconscionable prick.

It's not that they lack time. It's that Obama lacks balls, leadership, and executive experience. And anything resembling a Clintonian impulse to hug the center.

1 So even though 90% of it is complete and utter waste, akin to tossing bushels of cash into an incinerator, it's full steam ahead into a looming ice berg with O! and co. the first ones into the life rafts, while feeding the hoi polloi to the sharks.

2 Gibbs is full of shit. They wrote it, they better know what is in it.
One week or one month won't make any difference. I can tell you now. Just pass the tax cuts and we will look at your list of democratic handouts after that.

9 WASHINGTON – Looking beyond expected House approval of an $819 billion economic stimulus plan, President Barack Obama said Wednesday the nation is at a "perilous moment" requiring swift and decisive action.
"We don't have a moment to spare," Obama said in the East Room of the White House, just hours before a crucial House roll call vote.

So we don't have a moment to lose on something that won'tgo intoeffect for a couple of years? Got it.

16 This is becoming a kindergarten school play in which everyone will be told to sit up and applause because they are children but they aren't, tthey are slick agenda driven dirtbag politicians of both the D and the R flavor, who are either robbing us blind to secure their political fortunes or worse yet...selling out their supporters to quietly ride the Obama wave, so they can last a year or so more.

Whereas, I'm glad to hear the Republicans are voting in mass against this stinking robber baron bill, I fear they don't have the backbone to stick it out until something that even ressembles a stimulus package hits the table.

Republican elected officials need to simply state their side of how this should take place and vote NO, NO, NO on this garbage until it reaches a 10% pork filled bill (which is still unacceptable) and all funds are releases instantly as to ....stimulate.

Make this Obama's bill, make it the Democrats bill, do NOT give them any cover what so ever....please.

Regardless of what either party does, I will be an Independent until the Republicans can get their acts together and keep them together.....we are watching.

20 I heard that only 6% of this money is spent in the first year.

And that the only money relevant to true stimulus, is whatever is spent in the first year.

If this is correct, why can't republicans focus like a laser beam on the fact that this isn't a stimulus bill at all? It has nothing to do with stimulus!

Posted by: Village Idiot at January 28, 2009 03:54 PM (pflbj)

25 The main issue is that the Democrats think they have to do something because Dear Leader wills it to be so. No matter how much money government throws at something, the only thing you get is waste and fraud all the way down the line.

I'll say it again and again: The TARP funds should have gone to retire/pay down as many mortgages as possible. That's some real stimulus, with real continuing results.

The government should be out of the mortgage business, the housing business, the education business, and anything else that isn't specifically stated in the Constitution.

27 Five months ago, most people in the US would have said that the national government was not in private enterprise and should not be in private enterprise.

Four months ago, the national government told us that it would use tax dollars to suck the poisonous bad loans out of the financial markets and eventually turn them into a profit for the treasury.

Three months ago, the national government told us that it preferred to use the money to purchase or prop up financial institutions.

Two months ago, the national government told us that it had to give our money to nearly bankrupt automobile manufacturers without requiring any specific operating changes beyond the curtailment of the use of private jets by company executives.

One month ago, the national government told us that they needed to spend another 800-plus billion dollars on projects that would create new jobs, have a net positive return on investment, and otherwise "get economy moving again."

Last week, we learned part of this stimulative injection envisioned by our representatives was to take the form of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of government rubbers.

To recap, in four months, the people in private business have gone from generally believing that the government only affected them through regulations and taxes to now seeing that they could at any time suddenly be in competition with a four-trillion-dollar, retardedgorilla.

All the flailing about that the retarded gorilla is doing -- all the ever changing plans to do something and do it now; all the ever changing suggestions about what the new tax policy will be; all the clear signaling that the road to financial success has been re-routed to pass through Washington; and especially the statement that this trillion-dollar-deficit state of affairs will likely prevail for years -- all of that has made it impossible for private business people to predict what next week is going to bring, let alone next quarter and next year.

Rational businesses do not take risks without having a reasonable expectation that the risk will result in profits. At this point, no one has any idea which areas of the economy the retarded gorilla is going to trample next.

When people cannot evaluate the risks; they cannot make plans. When they cannot make plans, they just hold what they got. This will continue until the gorilla calms back down.

28 I never thought I would be saying this but Thank You Henry Paulson!
Thank you for making the whole TARP process so needlessly fucking scary and end of the world shit that now Congress and the President pretty much have to actually trot out one of the 4 Horsemen to get people to believe it's the end of the world.

Perhaps that was the plan all along. Ask for what in the past seemed like a huge damn number, 750 BILLION, and scare the shit out of people with it. This way when the Democrats ask for the TRILLIONS when they control Congress and the White House they end of America would be off the table.

Or maybe it was just Karl Rove.....YMB!

34 What's amazing is that they don't seem to have any real desire to actually stimulate the economy. 41 Their money for the “smart grid” is another bullshit boondoggle so that they can demand that we wheel power from the midwest and the southeast to the far west and the northeast because the nimbies will not build plants in their own area. This is total bullshit people and the money they are dedicating to it are far short of the amount needed.

So where is the remaining money going to come from? The individual utilities will have to provide the money which means the ratepayers in those regions will have to provide it. A nicely hidden tax so that power can be wheeled hundreds of miles to green turds who want the power but not the plant.

This entire bill is a worthless POS.

42 Repost, since it's more applicable here:
NY Times:
The economic stimulus plan that Congress has scheduled for a vote on Wednesday would shower the nation’s school districts, child care centers and university campuses with $150 billion in new federal spending, a vast two-year investment that would more than double the Department of Education’s current budget.
This is an utterly dishonestway to implement funding he could not otherwise implement. Americans supported an “economic stimulus” plan because they wanted to hire more teachers and day care workers? Of course not.

He’s using a crisis for fundamentally changing how the country funds education – forever. (Thanks W. for opening the door to this with your unprecedented trashing of Reagan’s view of education and the federal government.)

Barry is overreaching. This is not what Americans signed up for. We can beat him on this.

73 Troll Feeder, I agree. Currently, I'm sitting pat and watching the markets with interest...why they were up today?....(ostensibly on Obie's remarks about 'creating banks to soak up bad assets') -- you just can not make this shit up!

I'm not spending and am hoarding every dollar I can possibly find, and I'm keeping my business lean for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

74 Jeez. Did you people actually believe him about the fiscal responsibilty and transparency stuff? He's a Chicago fuckin' politician, fer crissakes!

75 I know that the immigration bill was a lot of conservative's political Rubicon and if it passed they would have abandoned ship no matter the consequences.

A big part of the reason we are in this hole and sinking deeper all the time is immigration. According to a post at NRO, if Americas ethnic composition was the same today as it was in 1992, Obama would have lost.
I wait with dwindling patience for people like you to grasp the direct connection between immigration and bigger government. If you care about the latter you'd damn well better start caring about the former.

But... but... but... I thought he was going to go over the ENTIRE federal budget, line by freaking line???

Why are you people so dense? Get out of the caves, you troglodytes
and introduce yourself to the 21st century. Obama and the Democrats
know exactly how to fix the economy -- by going Green. Obama
is going to spread prosperity, save the planet, and end war in the
middle east by investing in green technology. Obama has many
supporters. And Obama has a plan.

Do you know my libtard co-workers?

BTW, it is a waste of time to explain to these people that green technology is just another scam, and that no, in most places, wind and solar energy are not as effective as natural gas and electricity. Sad, but true.

84 Give us just a little cash for remediation, Lord Obo
And by remediation I mean the Two Tarp Protocol
One tarp protects the wall, preferably stone, and the other is used to wrap up the trash that's been "remediated" If their "esteemed colleagues" wish, they may claim the trash. Since we always think "green,"the wall tarp likely will enjoy a lifespan over the remediation of dozens of the Trash
Line them up two at a time, shoulder to shoulder to facilitate expeditious trash-handling. Mmmm !.... HopeyChangey visualization !

C'mon, man! Haven't I suffered enough over the last year? You want guys like me to contact Juan McLame, as if he would actually acknowledge and/or listen to his, you know, constituents? I've been flipped the bird enough these past months. At least in my case, you're fucking cruel even for asking, Erik....

87 This is just like that 1st bailout that started it all- we were told we had to 'act now' or the economy would collapse and asteroids would hit us and cats would start living with dogs. Then the Gummint promptly lost track of $300B. Now we have another crisis and we're told there's no time- we have to throw a shitpile of money at it RIGHT FUCKING NOW because 53% of voters I guess means a STONE COLD MANDATE for change and lies and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
I can't write my Rep or Senator because they're all Democrats- hell, they took one of our senators and made him Interior Secretary Tree-hugger-In-Chief. But we have to impress on the Republicans that if they vote for this shit, we will do everything to see to it that they lose their fucking seats next time around.
