Ohio Officials Lied About The Reason For Checking Joe The Plumber's Records

Routine? Kind of thing that just sort of happens as a public service? Mmmmm....not so much apparently.

Vanessa Niekamp said that when was asked to run a child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted the state agency about his case.

Niekamp didn't know she just had checked on "Joe the Plumber," who was elevated the night before to presidential politics prominence as Republican John McCain's example in a debate of an average American.

The senior manager would not learn about "Joe" for another week, when she said her boss informed her and directed her to write an e-mail stating her computer check was a legitimate inquiry.

The reason Niekamp said she was given for checking if there was a child-support case on Wurzelbacher does not match the reason given by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Director Helen Jones-Kelley said her agency checks people who are "thrust into the public spotlight," amid suggestions they may have come into money, to see if they owe support or are receiving undeserved public assistance.

Niekamp told The Dispatch she is unfamiliar with the practice of checking on the newly famous. "I've never done that before, I don't know of anybody in my office who does that and I don't remember anyone ever doing that," she said today.

Sue Joe Sue! The depositions will be fun.

Oh and I'm not a lawyer but this sure looks like grounds for a criminal investigation, no?

Hey Ohio GOP or Team McCain...how about an ad in the state about this crap?

Everyone make calls tmr to the battleground states.

Posted by: politicalmuse at October 31, 2008 10:15 PM (ShJoD)

6 It may be grounds for a suit, but Joe should just shut up and go away. And hope they don't persecute him any further. There is a reason for the old saying 'You can't fight City Hall.' (Unless you are willing to use RPGs.)

7 Chcck Drudge NOW!!!!

Zogby puts McCain ahead in one day polling!!!

9 Sorry if this is old news, I just got back from trick or treat party ... Anyway, Drudge says Zogby has McCain ahead of Obama 48-47... strange times we live in.

Posted by: spypeach at October 31, 2008 10:19 PM (QwWKI)

10 Fuck that, Glenmore.

Joe has access to plenty of lawyers who'll take this case for him.

He'll win, too.

Posted by: Dead Career Sketch at October 31, 2008 10:21 PM (JTN0y)

11 It won't even go to trial. Joe's going to settlement city

12 I'd love to see the douchenozzle Jones-Kelley in front of a Grand Jury ...If Obomber flames out, who's gonna cover her back?

13 I smell an Obama pardon.............

Hah! McCain will pull it out. Then who'll be up shit creek, eh?

Posted by: Techie at October 31, 2008 10:28 PM (EVMm7)

14 toby928,

If Joe wants to press matters he can't be forced to settle.
That might piss off the judge but he's free to pursue matters in open court.

Beside that, the depositions will be where all the fun is.

Posted by: Nom de Blog at October 31, 2008 10:31 PM (nOQ1R)

15 Is it me, or has Helen Jones-Kelley done the McCain folks the biggest favor in the world?
I mean,I assume thestink from thishas got to be all over Ohio, and is probably good for giving McCain at least 3-5 points in an essential swing state.
Thank you Jones-Kelley foryour lame attempt at Chicago hardball. You just might win John McCain thePresidency.

Posted by: Lee at October 31, 2008 10:32 PM (Xb3DR)

16 If Joe wants to press matters he can't be forced to settle.

True, but I predict they will back a dumptruck full of money up to his house. He's not made of stone you know.

That and cash.

18 Joe OWNS the state of Ohio. All the lawyer needs to do is write a letter essentially saying "send us a check, we'll fill in the amount".

Posted by: GarandFan at October 31, 2008 10:53 PM (eJ32B)

19 Joe can force a civil settlement and be a victim in a criminal case.

Posted by: Jean at October 31, 2008 10:56 PM (HVRSA)

Joe can force a civil settlement and be a victim in a criminal case.

Correct... if the Ohio privacy laws are anything like the Federal UNAX laws on data like tax information, then there are provisions for both criminal and civil cases on the same incident.

Posted by: BrandonInBatonRouge at October 31, 2008 10:59 PM (U7TcP)

21 Oh yeah... string the bitch up... no trial, no judge... give her a taste of the commie criminal justice system she is trying to help install

Posted by: MikeC at October 31, 2008 11:04 PM (XWJh5)

22 Joe needs a good lawyer. And after he takes them to the cleaners, he shouñd run for office. He could start with mayor of his town to get some executive experience, then he could run for govenor to get some more executive experience. If he can't manage to tar and feathersome Democrats along the way then he ain't the man I thought he was.

Posted by: Harry at October 31, 2008 11:05 PM (n8RSd)

23 Joe, it's kinda funny that you've gone full Warbucks upstairs because pretty soon you'll be able to turn a pinkie to your mouth and say "$1 Beellion dollars, BWAHAHA!"

Posted by: adamthemad at October 31, 2008 11:05 PM (aVVGO)

24 Where's the ACLU when you need them for the real travesty cases? Sounds like Joe the Plumber needs to have a telethon to raise some money for a good attorney.

Posted by: smartsy at October 31, 2008 11:13 PM (pq986)

25 i'm an ohio attorney. i once represented a girl who worked with the bureau of motor vehicles and accessed the state computer to find the address of her deadbeat ex-husband so she could collect child support. she ended up pleading guilty to a felony for that.

26 So maybe the 20% of Republicans who supported Ted Strickland for Governor can finally see that he's a piece of shit and the people he appoints are also pieces of shit? Can we get some Republicans to support the Republican nominee this time around please?

32 I'd like to hear from Ohio residents on this. I'm pissed, but I'm not in Ohio. What say you OHIO?

Posted by: Topsecretk9 at November 01, 2008 01:23 AM (V1E6L)

33 Remember people, we went through 4 fake years of Valerie Plame bullshit...SUE JOE, Really fucking sue, you WILL have a legal defense fund

Posted by: Topsecretk9 at November 01, 2008 01:29 AM (V1E6L)

34 Sure, if Joe sues, it helps Joe and makes the point about the Nazis in Ohio, which might help Republicans in Ohio, but it does not solve the problem.

Recall. That's the solution. Recall Brunner and Strickland. Amputate the rot to save the patient.

Come on, Ohio, clean it up. You ain't gonna remain an important state if you get sucked into Democrat corruption. You are just going to be the next Michigan, a a festering pustule of corruptocracy . More important than not becoming another Michigan, it shows that citizens are willing to clean up politics when the federal judges, including SCOTUS, and the Obama sycophants in the Justice Department are not willing to enforce the law.

Ohio: the Venezuela of the Midwest. Ted "Hugo Chavez" Strickland, dictator. Jennifer "Che" Brunner.

Strike a blow for freedom.

35 I'm fromOhio and I say go Vanessa! I used to work for ODJFS in the Child Support office before I was laid off due to budget cuts. Do you know the director, Mr. Thompson, tried to not be there to let his own staff know they were being laid off? He tried to go to some out of state meeting in order to dodge us. He also didn't even show up on our last day. If you ask me, what goes around comes around Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Jones-Kelley!

The election itself will soon be in the past tense, yet itwill stillbe most interesting to learn exactly who-all get fired over this, in what order, and exactly why. May we hope the Columbus Dispatch (non-MSM newspaper?) folks, etc. keep us posted up.

38 It’s just beyond belief that the Obama campaign and its operatives and surrogates can get away with numerous illegal, immoral and unethical acts, and the people who are so intent on show horning Obama into the White House could care less. They spend all of their time trying to defer the concerns of astute Americans to something a Republican did 10 years ago. They just don't get that they are putting this guy into the most powerful position in the free world and they guy most likely is not a natural-born citizen, he has a close relative who is in the country illegally, he has been close friends with a domestic terrorist, a member of the PLO (another terrorist), has proclaimed an affinity for 'Marxist professors' and has absolutely zero executive decision making experience. No one else with this background and these associates and any question of citizenship would even be in the running for president. Any Republican who had a family member in the country illegally would be the scorn of every news organization. The Obama campaign is so close to the communist party in their secret-police and Gestapo tactics, it’s frightening. Anyone who votes for this guy is not capable of critical thought and needs to spend some time in real introspection.
