WaPo Exclusive: Pentagon Inspector General's Report States Conclusively That Bush Admin Official Cooked Pre-War Intelligence!!!
Oh, Minor Correction: It Was A Report From Anti-War Democrat Carl Levin Which "Concluded" That. Whoops, Our Bad.

Long headline, but for one of the most egregious "twisted intelligence" debacles of all time.

The correction, of course, does not quite capture the enormity of this error -- breathlessly labeling a partisan liberal Democrats' "conclusions" as if they were the indpendent, nonpartisan official conclusions of the Bush-run Pentagon. How could they really convey how massively they fucked up here? This is, in journalistic terms, simply catastrophic.

"Confirmation bias," they call it-- the press simply will run anti-Republican stories that ought to sound a little implausible or sketchy because, to them, they sound pretty darn reasonable. Such "facts" are "self-checking" -- they just prove themselves by how wonderfully they fit in with the liberal worldview.

Meanwhile, anything that shows the Democrats in a bad light is vetted, checked, confirmed, re-confirmed, and subject to a complete full-office rewrite to insure all appropriate mitigating "context" was included before ultimately being buried on page A37 beneath a short blurb on Icelandic geese migration.

Carl Levin Wouldn't Lie To You: Consider how astoundingly easily it was for Levin to get this false report on page one of the Washington Post. He just had to claim what he was reading was from the IG report. (Or be unclear about which report he was quoting.)

No need to see the actual document. Nope -- if Carl Levin tells you something, that itself is auto-confirming. Liberal Democrats don't lie to other liberal Democrats, and they never make errors. So really, who needs to see the actual document?

The standard "two sources" verification rule is apparently suspended if a liberal Democrat is your source.

Better Headline For the Washington Post:

Charges Carl Levin Has Been Making For Three Years Completely Vindicated By 2004 Report Authored By Carl Levin

So their front page story wasn't merely based upon a partisan document written by Carl Levin, misattributed to the Pentagon IG -- it was based on a 2004 partisan document written by Carl Levin.

I think this is where Dave from Garfield Ridge is supposed to step out from behind a wall and say, "It's old."

The first-to-market effect should be fun to watch-- the media just got a late Christmas present in a report confirming everything they believe (which is, of course, also everything Carl Levin believes).

One problem: None of it is true.

But they don't want to give back their Christmas present. Who would?

So it will be enjoyable to watch the media spin the actual report as "substantially" confirming Carl Levin's various charges even though, you know, it actually doesn't.

But they now have that idea in their little pointy immune-to-contrary-facts heads: Report proves Bush twisted intelligence. That idea is in there (as it always has been) and they'll be damned if stupid little facts get in the way of "The Truth."

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE WASHINGTON POST: DUKE LACROSSE PLAYERS FOUND GUILTY!!!!

Oh, wait -- they are "guilty" according to charges filed by DA Mike Nifong.

Sorry, minor mistake of attribution there. Could happen to anyone, really.

See, Mike Nifong was reading his indictment to us over the phone, and he sort of gave the impression that he was reading from the jury's verdict, and, see... well, who has time to check on these things.

It sounded pretty good when he was reading it to us.

Reporting is hard, man.

Geezus what an ass, Carl Levin.

2 Carl Levin is a freakin' jerk. I was on a plane with that A-hole in 1998 and he was truly an impolite prick. As Kos might say: "Screw 'Em."

And let's be honest. He's got the worst comb-over in the Congress. Joe Biden is nobody's slouch with the hair-fakery but Levin scoffs at his lack of "fakin' it."

God. I hate that SOB with an intense passion.

3 Heck, if a made for TV movie based on the 9-11 Report puts Clinton in a bad light, then you may lose your broadcast license. So why would the Post have any incentive to print things that could be negative to the Democrat Party.

My reply from now on is"well by looking at a tea leaf, or my morning stool.......you've got your facts all wrong". How about a flame thread on how to verify stories. "GDP must down because a sparrow flew into my sliding glass door, sparrow=GDP". "It's that simple, thats why you have me at the MSM to take all the relevant info, and bring it to you as I see fit".

too bad humility isn't a characteristic of journalists, how about front page corrections collumns?

whenever I fuck up? It has to be loud and obvious, when I correct myself.why is it that everyone with a 6 figure salary can get off with just ignoring their failures, and later be praised for their failures?

Maybe it's cuz failure is the common denominator of these FUCKS!

12 Ace:
One problem: None of it is true.

WaPo:
The two reports employ similar language to characterize the activities
of Feith's office: Levin's report refers to an "alternative
intelligence assessment process" developed in that office, while the
inspector general's report states that the office "developed, produced,
and then disseminated alternative intelligence assessments on the Iraq
and al Qaida relationship, which included some conclusions that were
inconsistent with the consensus of the Intelligence Community, to
senior decision-makers." The inspector general's report further states
that Feith's briefing to the White House in 2002 "undercuts the
Intelligence Community" and "did draw conclusions that were not fully
supported by the available intelligence."

So, really at least some of it is true. The actual report supports Levin's facts if not his conclusions. But yes, they fucked up royally.

Here's the good news in of all this. If the WaPo hadn't screwed up on reporting this, the story never would have been mentioned here at all. No?

And while you suggest WaPo only had one source, you might mention that they talked to the most important source of all. They interviewed and quoted Douglas Feith. Certainly, nothing in the official report counteracts anything Levin has said. So, it would seem to me that it is a bit silly to claim that this sloppy reporting proves that everything Levin says is false when really the report actually bolsters his opinions (if less so than we were led to believe).

Flame away. I won't be around a computer for the rest of the night, so I will enjoy the comments at a later time.

Cheers.

15 there is a difference between true and known.

For something to be a lie, it must have been known to be a lie.
For something to be untrue, it mearly must have been believed to be true at the time statements were made, absent the deliberate manipulation of things that were known to disseminate a thing that is untrue.
See? Dems get away with lying, because everyone assumes they are retarded, and they probably are, but CLEARLY some of them actually are lying. However, it is almost impossible to make that statement since noone presumes to assume that the false statements made by dems are deliberate manipulations of things that are known, but rather that they are just too stupid to see the truth even after they've spread untruths.

See, it's a cyclicle thing with dems, thats the advantage of "nuance"/a history of lying through your fucking teeth that gives them that sort of cover.

19 Levin suckered the post, and got a whole day of the negative headlines his career is based around. The retraction won't be mentioned on hardball or anywhere else it was reported. Business as usual.
No, the post didn't 'lie', instead they just once again failed in their duty as journalists to fact check and verify. They are gullible fools for the likes of Levin, because he "completes" them.
Print media is not geared up to break stories like blogs can, so they have dropped all attempts at superior credibility and are desperately grasping for some small relevence in the new media. If only they can be the ones to break the equivilent of the Monica story against a Republican, they can get back to their Watergate days!
I really don't believe it is 'intentional' bias. Its just who they are. Who they have always been, but due to the net people can see it now. They just never were very unbiased. Or good.

21 They don't care about these mistakes, because they aren't mistakes. They make these stupid statements and run these factual lies with FULL knowledge of the falsity of what's said and written: They support the underlying message whether the story is right or wrong factually: witness the Dan Rather 'My facts were right even if the documents were faked' fiasco a couple years ago.
They took a good long time to put the Piss Stained CBS newstud out to pasture, and CBS never actually completely disavowed the documents story. CBS just said the copies they had were faked, not that the entire story was faked and utter bull-crap.:
Truth in journalism in modern day America? Keep wishing, folks: that standard died with Watergate. Look at how Scooter Libby's getting a gov't sodomy job. No one on the right is ever going to be safe again.

Of course they lie, and they obfuscate, and they willingly print this obscene garbage...simply because they agree with it, so it has to be right, even if the facts at hand contradict their version of the story.

Conclusion: the MSM are smear artists, and lying pieces of s**t, and complete sellouts, and not a damned thing more.

Sadly yes. The left. I had a guy stay at my house for a couple day recently who was very liberal. He couldn't understand why I would look at the internet for my info. he said I would be a lot more informed if I read the newspaper or watched CNN.

Levin knew he was lying, the WaPO knew he was lying, and the story has been pushed for days now as if it were the truth, which everyone knows is itself a lie.

Hence: collusion to lie. A by God conspiracy, if you will.

Oh, and one more thing: When a blogger makes a mistake, if he/she wants to retain any credibility they admit the error right at the top of the blog.By contrast, the WaPo and other wretched socialist rat-bastard lying-scum newspapers can lie like a rug at the top of page one, then print a very small "correction" at the bottom of an inside page.

A leetle detail that makes the story so much worse. In the correction?

References to Feith's office producing "reporting of dubious quality or reliability" and that the office "was predisposed to finding a significant relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda" were from a report issued by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) in Oct. 2004.

See that...it was a Levin report from 2004

What do you bet a copy of that report is/was sitting in the file cabinet in WAPO and whaddya bet the WAPO already did a story with similar quotes on that Levin report way back in...oh...say October 2004?

Newly Released Data Undercut Prewar Claims
Source Tying Baghdad, Al Qaeda Doubted
By Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 6, 2005

In fact, in January 2004 al-Libi recanted his claims, and in February 2004 the CIA withdrew all intelligence reports based on his information. By then, the United States and its coalition partners had invaded Iraq.

Levin, ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he arranged for the material to be declassified by the DIA last month. At the same time that the administration was linking Baghdad to al Qaeda, he said, the DIA and other intelligence agencies were privately raising questions about the sources underlying the claims.

Since then, Levin said in an interview Friday, almost all government intelligence on whether Iraq pursued or possessed weapons of mass destruction has proved faulty. In addition to the allegation of training terrorists loyal to Osama bin Laden, there were government claims that then-Iraq President Saddam Hussein had stocks of chemical and biological weapons, that he had reconstituted his nuclear weapons programs, and that unmanned airborne vehicles posed a threat, Levin said.

He said that he could not be certain that White House officials read the DIA report, but his "presumption" was that someone at the National Security Council saw it because it was sent there.

Administration officials declined to comment for this article.

Levin noted in a prepared statement that, beginning in September 2002, President Bush, Vice President Cheney, then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, then-CIA Director George J. Tenet, and then-Secretary of State Colin L. Powell used the alleged chemical and biological training by Baghdad as valid intelligence in speeches and public appearances to gather support for the Iraq war.

In none of the speeches or appearances was reference made to the DIA questioning the reliability of the source of the claims, Levin said. The doubts about al-Libi were contained in the DIA's February 2002 "Defense Intelligence Terrorist Summary,"which was sent to the White House and the National Security Council and circulated among U.S. intelligence agencies.

"The newly declassified information provides additional dramatic evidence that the administration's prewar statements regarding links between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda represents an incredible deception," Levin said.

Levin pointed specifically to an Oct. 7, 2002, speech in which the president outlined what he said was the "grave threat" from Iraq days before the House and Senate voted on a resolution giving him the authority to go to war.

"We've learned that Iraq has trained al Qaeda members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases," Bush said, an assertion that was based, according to Levin, primarily on al-Libi's material. Other less important intelligence on the training of al Qaeda members, carried in the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs, also came from questionable sources, Levin said.

50 Linda Wirthheimer was subbing for Dan Schorr on NPR this morning. She might as well have been sucking on Harry Reid's dick. Here's a little note I sne her:
Perhaps text time Dan Schorr goes on leave, NPR should bring in Harry Reidinstead of Linda Wirthheimer for new analysis. That way we could get theanalysis straight from the source, without the risk that Linda might flub atalking point.Did I actually hear her say that the last election showed that Americanswant to pull out of Iraq, but "the Republicans in the Senate didnt get themessage"? Linda clearly got the memo however: that the last election isnow offically deemed to have been about the war, and Ms. Pelosis famousclaim that the Democrats "didn't need one position" on the war, because itwas about domestic issues, is no longer operative. Harry could hardly havefinessed that one better.Did she actually repeat as fact the canard that has been flying around allweek about the Republicans "cutting off debate"? Harry would at least knowwhat a motion for Cloture is, since he authored the one that failed to cutoff debate because Republicans defeated the measure - the one to cut offdebate authored by the Harry Reid, leader of the Democrats in the Senate.Should I go over that again? I know it can be confusing when the simpletruth is one way and the Preferred Truth is the opposite. But telling thePreferred Truthis one of NPR's core values.Oh, I know Linda was technically okay because she slipped in "The headlinessaid..." in front of her assertion that Republicans cut off debate. That'sjust classic NPR: keep reinforcing the absolutely false reporting of othersas if it was true, and pretty soon it IS TRUE!And after cooing over Obama like she was his mama, Linda lets us in on herreal concern: she is not quite sure how well a lightweight like RudyGuliani will make the leap from "responding to terror" to "preventingterror". Well, duh, he could always draw on Obamas experience in thatarea, right?!Linda also made the obligatory references to the religious right and theirreluctance to support Rudy, Mitt, or whomever, casting doubt on whether aRepublican can win without the knuckle-dragger vote. Well done. And noticein the whole piece there is never a reference to anyone failing to supportany of the Democrats positions - because their positions are nevermentioned. So smooth, so facile. All in all, Linda did well. But speaking of Mitt Romney, there is one areawhere Harry Reid would have clearly given us better insights than Lindapossibly could. Will people vote for a Mormon? Linda has doubts, veryserious doubts. But Harry Reid the Senate Majority Leader, doesn't have anydoubts about the electability of Mormons at all.Do you know why, Linda? Hint: it is something you apparently aren't allowedto mention on NPR because you don't want to dilute a good talking point, soI guess Ill have to give you the benefit of the doubt here.

Moron helper hint: Harry Reid is a douchbag Mormon.

51 Sherlock,
Very good. It's too bad, though, that the same letter could be sent to almost any news department with only a slight change of names-to protect the guilty.

I did not realize that Harry Reid is adouchebag Mormon. Why is that never mentioned?

52 You know the biggest problem is that this will be repeated forever as true and obvious and supported by the pentagon no matter what anyone says. There are still idiots around the world that say the Thanksgiving turkey President Bush served in Iraq was turkey, to this day.

The best analysis of this I've read is when someone pointed out that it's like in junior high when there's this one weird kid in class who seems like he'd do anything, he's so freaky and nasty that no rumor, no innuendo, no story regardless of how outrageous is unthinkable about this wierdo.

That's how they view President Bush. He's so obviously corrupt and evil and horrible that some day they'll find actual evidence that shows this and any story that hints at it, no matter how whacky, they'll believe.

54 Carl Levin's fake report falsely reported by WaPo is just another sign that the left has succeeded in taking over our nation. Moral relativism means that if I believe it, it must be true. Facts be damned, full speed the agenda.
The same can be said about the message the voters sent in the November midterms. It was much more about conservative voters unable to rid themselves of the vile taste a spendthrift, illegal alien loving GOP majority had put in their mouths and much less about pulling out of Iraq and surrendering to Islamofascism. I believe that, it must be true.

59 Are we to assume that the "new comments thingy" is now the "official comments thingy?"
I prefer the austerity of the old form, but the e-mail trace is useful just curious, I only ask, cuz I assume thats what Tmi3rd might be looking for pixy for.

60 Meanwhile, anything that shows the Democrats in a bad light is vetted, checked, confirmed, re-confirmed, and subject to a complete full-office rewrite to insure all appropriate mitigating "context" was included before ultimately being buried on page A37 beneath a short blurb on Icelandic geese migration.Yeah, this blatant asymmetry happens all the time. My all-time
favorite example of this is that NPR interview of Michael Moore
by infobabe Terri Gross on her "Fresh Air" program. She was so
embarrassingly fawning and gushing that I thought like she was
about to get down on her knees and give Moore a big ol' slobbery
knob job.

But then a few months later, Gross had Bill O'Reilly on as a
guest and it was completely different. Not only was she not
fawning in any way, but she wasn't even polite. The "interview"
consisted of a barrage of aggressively hostile, agenda-laden
questions designed to make O'Reilly look dishonest, stupid, or
both. It was so egregrious that he walked out in disgust about
3/4th of the way through, leaving Gross to do the lame "empty
chair" schtick for the remaining time. I'm no fan of O'Reilly,
but Gross' conduct was atrocious and I think what he did was
justified.

And when you compare both interviews, the only conclusion is that
Terri Gross is not a real journalist; in fact, she is a dishonest
partisan hack.

Asymmetry? It's what for breakfast.

61 Yeah Pinto, I prefer the old comments thingy to the new comments thingy, too, but it may be gone forever.

62 I don't mind, there has just been no notification of a final solution.
