This week's video is Day 1 of the Twelve Days of Carry Well, one cigar left from the year's supply in the variety pack Mrs D. snatched for me from Santa last Christmas. I think I have written about these before and if so, nothing has changed that a year in the humidor hasn't made better. Never underestimate the ability of the A. Fuente Hemmingway Short Story cigar to provide you with 20 minutes of smoking pleasure. Yes, it is funny looking and yes it is a small cigar. (Pictured here next to one of those airline bottles.) But it is packed with flavor and a wonderful aroma. The immediate hit is cinnamon, and pepper and they provide the background for a very smooth tobacco finish. This is the perfect cigar for when you don't have an hour to kick back, or if you are down to your last shot of whiskey to drink while smoking. Easy to light, easy draw, and an even ash throughout. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. At age 65, I've noticed that it's not a decline in muscle memory or pistol control that erodes my results at the range.
It's diminishing visual acuity which is the culprit. Before I $pend Dollar$ on eyeball doctors, I think I'm going to try a rather wide array of "cheaters", all pretty much in the +1.75 zone, but see which maker's "grind" tends to give me the best results. There's also the huge refractive differences between simple, clear plastic, Polycarbonate, Lexan and the newer, more exotic (and expensive) specialty optical plastics. I'll pass on glass, due to weight and fragility. Then, various coating technologies come into play. Might end up with a $200 set of "cheaters", but it's still gonna be le$$ than the eyeball doc. Reminds me, of when I quit a job over a similar issue. Told the boss: "I just can't see working here anymore.", and left. MERRY CHRISTMAS, HORDE! I will put in a little plug for Bobro engineering. I mentioned one of my scope mounts on my long rifle had a complete shearing of the threaded stems on one side. Couldn't figure out if it happened during the move or if I somehow screwed up the torque on the FAT wrench.
Pretty sure I didn't because the wrench was still set to the same setting as when I last mounted that scope and it was to spec. But still, all four stems sheared in half. Anyway, they agreed to replace the mount if I just covered labor and shipping, which was a good deal since it's a hundred and fifty buck mount. Thankfully the new design doesn't use press fit threaded stems. It's tapped and uses machine screws instead. Kudos for a decent company and check out their mounts if you need one. Probably won't get to the range over the holidays. They tend to be very busy with folks trying out their new toys and bringing their house guests along.
Instead I've been doing a lot of reading about reloading. I want to duplicate the load my 9mm pistols prefer in commercial ammo: a 147 grain bullet at circa 1,000 FPS. I'll be using X-Treme or Berry's plated bullets which I treat as cast, not jacketed. Also, I want to load more accurate 38 specials. I have guns capable of superb accuracy such as a K-38 and a first generation Contender but the 'historic' 148 grain wadcutter load isn't cutting it. (It could well be me.) So I'm checking on powders and charges to tweak the loads. It's a fun part of the hobby. Posted by: JTB at December 24, 2023 07:48 PM (7EjX1) 55

This is another reason I like flintlocks (besides they are just so cool). If I were a hunter and wanted a smoothbore, I would look for a flintlock fowling piece. Evening, folken! Miss Linda and I just had our Christmas Eve dinner, baked shrimp with brown rice-based macaroni. Yes, it was good. She is an accomplished cook, though she keeps referring to her concoctions as "gruel."
Anyway! 'Tis raining and in the mid-'60s here. We plan to go to the Christmas Eve mass at her church about 3/4 of a mile away. If the rain doesn't slacken, though, I don't know if we can do it. Regarding cigars: I bought a tin of Romeo y Julieta cigarillos (the blue tin) earlier this year, but have not had the nerve to light one up. I figure I should do it outdoors; pipe tobacco usually smells pretty good indoors, and mild to boot, but I'm not sure about cigarillos. Anybody had these? Are they strong? 59 ... "Mainly black powder shotgun loads. Solid brass shells. Hand loading. Very slow going."
Those brass shells are wonderful and reloadable but aren't always available and are expensive. There are videos on reloading regular plastic shells with BP. They might be good only once but once fired shells are very cheap and the various wads are inexpensive or can be made at home. Those brass shells are wonderful and reloadable but aren't always available and are expensive. There are videos on reloading regular plastic shells with BP. They might be good only once but once fired shells are very cheap and the various wads are inexpensive or can be made at home. Don't talk to the police? This should be your default position, especially if you feel like you have to explain yourself or defend yourself. If the police ask, you can tell them what you are Right Here and Right Now. Beyond that, say that you are invoking your right to remain silent. Exceptions? Sure, but use caution.

Pipe tobacco: I've tried only two C & D blends. First was Gentleman Caller, which has deer tongue in it (no, it's an herb; no deer were harmed during the production of this blend). It sounded good in description but did nothing for me. The other was their Christmas 2021 blend Alpine Lodge, which came to me as a freebie when I bought a Peterson pipe that December. Sort of chocolate-ish and strong. I mixed it with other, milder tobaccos and made the cake last ten months. That one I wish they'd bring back.

Are you going to be looking for TARGET ammo, or HUNTING ammo? You gotta be in the Right Bullet Zone as to your options, there. Sierra does make an alternate to the Match King bullet, it's called the Game King. The literature says it's made to the same standards, and should produce very nearly the same exterior ballistics. But, the bullet is made to hold together and properly "mushroom" as it transits Mr. Deer. Trick is, then, finding a manufacturer who might produce Match Grade Ammo, while using the Game King (or other super-premium) hunting bullets. Posted by: Bonecrusher at December 24, 2023 08:47 PM (u0OdI) If I'm reading you correctly, you're wanting the best possible accuracy, but with the filling of freezer, as your primary purpose. In which case, I'd advise you to avoid any "match" ammo, completely. Dive into how Hunting bullets are made, vs. Match (target) bullets. Hunting bullets are made with a great emphasis on bonding, (mechanically, chemically or both) the lead core to the copper jacket. The jacket is often "skived", creating pre-existing failure points, so that the jacket will peel backwards on impact, creating a "mushroom" shape. This will transmit the most energy to the game, and do the most physical damage, in hopes of a Quick Kill. Conversely, target bullets, though made with great precision and care, simply ignore any post-impact physics in their design and construction. Once they've pierced the paper, they've completed their job. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 24, 2023 08:55 PM (e6UQI) 128
#114, 120: Bullet weight at the constant velocity is the deciding factor. The degree of expansion is really important, however, a 400 yard ice pick, if well placed, will kill just as dead. Ideally, I would like lots of expansion and really accurate, predictable, and linear in its profile.

Try C and D's Autumn Evening blend. It is available in tins or in bulk. I get a pound at a time. It is VERY flavorful but the strength is mild. It is my favorite C and D offering in bulk. I haven't tried Early Morning Pipe for many years but it has a great reputation. I should pick up a tin to try it again. I love Amphora tobaccos, especially the full aroma and original styles. Evenin' Horde and Merry Christmas!
Santa isn't bringing me any gun stuff because I'm the only gun nut in the family. But I officially have funds in hand to start looking for my very own Highway Patrolman. And perhaps a 12 gauge. Maybe another 1911... But first, the Highway Patrolman! As of Wednesday my gubs, ammo, mom, cat, and I will all be relocating to SiD (Half) Acres. I've only met one neighbor so far, but she is a gun owner. I'm gonna like this 'hood. Posted by: screaming in digital at December 24, 2023 09:34 PM (WSDq0) 163

Merry Christmas SiD - I took the Missus over to the Laramie range a week ago Friday, but Roy had to attend a Christmas party so we missed him. Still had a great time though!
Good luck with your move! Posted by: 496 at December 24, 2023 09:41 PM (SNfTR) 168
Turn on the interior light.
*BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM* "He was trying to blind me and I was afraid for my life!" Roll down your window. "I detect a strong odor of marijuana and alcohol and plastic explosive. Step out of the car. NOW! STEP OUT OF THE FUCKING CAR, BITCH!" Talk to the police a whole bunch. "You're under arrest for murder. Put YOUR FUCKING HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK! STOP RESISTING!!" Anything you do and say can and will be twisted against you. This guy thinks we're living in fucking Mayberry. Posted by: Seriously - ask for your lawyer. Are you asking me as to speculate what was happening in your mind when you decided to pull me over?!?

Merry Christmas, Weasel, Mrs. Weasel, and all the Weasel Critters, great and small.
May the presents under your tree be replete with walnut, blue steel, sharp optics and even sharper blades. And, thank YOU, sir, for the gifts of lo, these past fifty or so Gun Threads, which are surely among the finest shooty literature to be found, online or otherwise. A New Year soon awaits. No matter what all else happens "out there", I'm certain that "in here" shall remain of the best, of the brightest and of the finest of friends, in both pixel and life. Merry Christmas 496!
I have been thinking a LOT about last Christmas lately. Miss going to the range with y'all. Posted by: screaming in digital at December 24, 2023 09:57 PM (WSDq0) 176
SiD.
You get that Highway Patrolman, and I'll send you a set of Pachymer Gripper Pro grips, to adorn that N frame goodness. Best hand-to-grip revolver interface I've ever held and fired. And I've held and fired... how do I say... LOTS of different revolvers. Let me know when you've tracked down and taken your 28-2 prey. I'll arrange shipping, and they'll be on their way. Many thanks, Jim, I'll certainly keep you posted. After Christmas I'll give Stinky's Daddy a call for advice.

He is wrong about Michigan and the Duty to Inform...
Handing the office your weapons permit is NOT sufficient. The first thing you need to say to the officer in Michigan during an OFFICIAL interaction like a traffic stop is: "I am legally required to inform you that I have a Concealed Weapons Permit and that I have weapon(s) concealed about person and/or vehicle." Michigan court decisions REQUIRE that something substantially similar to this be spoken to the officer within 30-60 seconds of the interaction starting... 180: In TX it is highly recommended. The cops will see you have an LTC anyway once they run your license. Cops are prima donnas at best and incredibly evil assholes with an insatiable lust for power at worst, so it’s best to just given them the LTC at a traffic stop in TX.
