[When I Want An Art Critic's Opinion I'll Beat It Out Of Him]

thorns caravaggio.jpg

The Crowning with Thorns
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

As one would imagine, the the crucifixion and the events leading up to it are a common theme in religious art, so it was difficult to choose just one. The portrayals of Christ are enormously varied; why not make it simple and stick to my favorite Renaissance painter?

27 So I was discussing the major world faiths with a friend the other day, and she just had to come out with the tired trope that Islam respects Jesus Christ as a prophet, and therefore we all are really having the same religion. Just a few differences around the edges, but other than that...no biggie.

Then we got into the true religious meaning of the historical events leading up to, and culminating with Jesus rising from the grave.

Prophets don't do that.

She almost saw the light.

67 I particularly like how the artist made it look like Jesus was just out getting his hair done that day. Makes for a pretty painting, but far removed from reality.

Too many depictions of Christ and his crucifixion miss the mark by light-years. Consider that Pilate ordered Christ flogged before turning him over to the Romans, and so by the time they put the crown of thorns on him, he would have been a bloody, shredded mass, nearly unrecognizable as a man.

Mankind apparently cannot comprehend the sheer agony our Savior endured, both spiritually and physically, as evidenced by "art". Mel Gibson got close with his depiction of Christ in The Passion, but I suspect he was still off by miles...

96 If you're not tired of winning, there's a Politico article whining that Trump is using an "obscure" law to wipe out Obama's last-minute regulations.

So terribly unfair of him to use the law to do what he promised.

Of course, being Politico, you'd think that the regulations are better than mom and apple pie--no hint whatsoever of any downside.

And they go to great pains to play up how he didn't let the press photograph him signing these "unpopular" bills "muscled through largely on party-line votes."

Yup.

All of these bad optics and losses for Trump just keep getting closer and closer to dismantling the Obama legacy.

He keeps losing like this and he may have nothing left to do after reelection except nominate more Supreme Court Justices.

I think it is because of how pigments were formulated and the varnish overlay, and they were much brighter when painted. After cutting cable several years ago, I started using a Leaf 50 amplified flat panel indoor antenna. Not bad, with about 20 channels, all in glorious HDTV.

So part of the recent work at Fortress VIA has been to put an attic antenna up, and see what it does.

And the results are just now in.......

35 channels.

Baltimore as well as a good bit of Washington D.C.

Cost?

$39.00 for the antenna

$19.00 for the amplified RCA four port splitter.

Several days to work up the courage to drill through, and go from basement to attic with RG-6Q coax.

155 Years ago, as a kid on a trip to some art museum, there was a display of Medieval art. There was a very primitive painting of Christ, just the head and upper torso filling the canvas, wearing the crown of thorns and purple robe, looking straight ahead, crying large, almost cartoonish tears. It was very striking - I've never forgotten it. In many ways, more effective than this, where the emotions are not very apparent, although of course this is technically superior.

I'm not sure of the inspection cycle of public or private restaurants, but I suspect it's at least yearly. For elderly facility with restaurant, I believe it's every three to six months.

Don't forget, there's always the insurance company and government collusion with all these regulations. The insurance company doesn't want to pay out claims, the government is willing to do the inspections, and the taxpayer foots the bill.

Now inspecting abortion clinics? That never seems to happen, for some reason.

152 I'd love to see the battle damage assessment for the MOAB strike.

Drone photos showing the little Taliban dogs running frantically and then -- BOOOOOM -- gone.

A fine pink mist mixed with dust and dirt.

Others on the edge of the blast zone writhing in pain for their short remaining 15 minutes of life because their internal organs burst from the pressure wave.

Inshallah, pal.

Inshallah.

I'm no theologian, but I imagine the answer would be, had human beings been virtuous enough to prefer Jesus to Barabbas, they would not have been in need of redemption, and Jesus would not have needed to subject himself to that situation in the first place.

But Jesus was fully human, as well as fully God. He must have laughed. And so should you.

197 Note the name Barabbas: Bar+abbas = "son of the father". There are some liberal theologians, like Richard Carrier, who point out that this seems to be an artificial name, which indicates that perhaps the whole account was fabricated - maybe just a story form of the OT account of sending away a scapegoat and sacrificing the other.

That's easy. The last line "He'd risen to show he's the boss!" - that idiom in normal usage always has the connotation of sinful human impulses being involved (enjoyment in wielding power and humiliating others), and Jesus is supposed to be sinless.

So they want the readers to do the work for them. Which the leftist brigade will eagerly embrace. Gone - an story which doesn't adhere to leftist memes.

Under the bamboo, bamboo, bamboo, under the bamboo tree.

Two live as one. One live as two. Two live as three.

Under the bam.
Under the boo.
Under the bamboo tree.

And the sound is the sound of the sea.
Under the bam. Under the boo. Under the bamboo tree.

Where the Gauguin maids in the banyan shades wear palm leaf drapery. Under the bam. Under the boo. Under the bamboo tree.

Tell me in what part of the woods would you like to flirt with me? Under the breadfruit, banyan, palmleaf, or under the bamboo tree?

Any old tree will do for me.
Any old wood is just as good.
Any old isle is just my style.
Any fresh egg. Any fresh egg. And the sound of the coral sea.

You want to ask a different question? Fine.

Once they get here, you find them and your deport them.

Are you really struggling with finding answers to these questions, or are you trying to justify a quaint, naive, and failed attempt by Bush and Co. to keep the fight over there.

Because if you need it explained to you how that failed, we can talk about that next.

Not sure how many of you spend any time in S.Florida in hoity toity locales, but even the best of them are typically in dire need of 'quality" employees. Truthfully, check out who is working there. Lots of Haitians, Bahamians, Dominican Republic, etc. Between the language barrier and the culture(sorry, it's the truth) who left their islands because the places are absolute pits , sterile sanitation is not taught easily.

I would also point out that Trump is no longer in charge of any of his businesses, because, shriek, conflict of interest. He has zero ability to do anything or to even know much about what goes on there day to day.

This is why there are restaurant inspections. Now when they go back and reinspect, if there is no improvement, that is a problem.
