Saturday Morning Oddities [Misanthropic Humanitarian]

z 5 stages of waking up.jpg

Good morning, grab a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage and enjoy some different things going on in the world.

  • Gingers deserve a break
  • Nap bar, will it catch on here?
  • My kind of teacher
  • Whiskey, photographic science
  • Valu-rite chuckle of the day
  • A good Saturday afternoon project

Feel free to discuss these oddities or whatever is on your mind. Consider this an open thread.

    1 Yay! Morning oddities!

2 As a Floridian, I always have a sense of dread when clicking the link of a story that has a messed up headline.

As I click, I say "please don't be Florida. Please don't be Florida"

Then the story loads, and I read the first few details.

    Fuck.

11 Morning morons, just some weird things to put a smile on your face or make you shake your head and say, WTF?

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at April 02, 2016 08:57 AM (voOPb)

12 I was hoping the teacher story was going to be about a hot babe, not an actual, you know, educator.

Posted by: Weasel at April 02, 2016 08:57 AM (e3bId)

13 You've got to hand it to Florida. At least they're trying.

15 Actually the five stages of waking up are....

    1) Got a woody
    2) Do I want to use the woody?
    3) Can I use the woody?
    4) Is there someone here who wants to use my woody too?
    5) If Not then I guess I have to do it myself

    Coffee!

20 jsg wife on the way out the door : I took the old Durango to Lowe's yesterday and there's a couple of things in the back. Can you put them in the garage for me while I'm at work ?

    Me : No problem

One hour later when I go out to unload the truck.

10 bags of garden soil, 4 bags of potting mix, 8 potted flowers, and a few new garden decor items. That's a couple of things.

But shit on me when I ask what's for dinner when I got home from work last night.

Posted by: jsg at April 02, 2016 09:08 AM (qUpoE)

21 Managed a tiny bit more sleep. Plus, no drinking, rare for a Friday night.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm at April 02, 2016 09:10 AM (AroJD)

22 Uh... regarding the nap bar... one of the secretaries at my place used to curl up under her desk with a little inflatable pillow and this huge pashmina and sleep during her lunch hour. The way the desks are situated you'd never know she was under there.

I like those lump/chaise things. They look comfy.

23 "Whats the plan of the day?"

My mood upon rising, at a painfully untimely hour, was such that the plan of the day should by rights incorporate a crew-served weapon and lots of ammo.

Instead, the plan involves a Weed Wacker.

Oh, noesss! The little donut/bagel shop 2 blocks from me is closing. It's been there for at least 25 years. The landlord doubled his rent and he cant afford it. It's owned by a Cambodian family (most donut shops in SoCal are) and they work hard. It had all my needs: closeby, parking, opened while still dark, bagels, croissants, soda, milk, lotto tickets....

    Just shoot me now!

40 So, on the previous thread, the matter of middle-school pupils being assigned serial fiction writing was brought up. Wherein each adds a new sentence and then passes the developing story to the next student.

This immediately brought to mind the classic story of university students "Rebecca" and "Gary" whose tandem writing assignment showed up on the amazing new Internet back in the 1990s. Yes, shortly after Al Gore first created it.

Suffice it to say that Rebecca and Gary had... divergent authorial styles.

In thee Air Force we use to make tennis ball cannons. Soda cans tops and bottoms would cut out and we had a rubber tape that would connect them to around 4 feet. The first can bottom was kept on and the top of it had a hole cut in. This was the chamber which lighter fluid was sprayed in. A touch hole was on the top of the chamber like a muzzle loading cannon. A tennis ball was shoved down the barrel and a lighter was used to fire it. A tennis ball could be shot down the hall end to end in the air. Old school I guess.

112 Bwah ha haah! Fault: drone operator.

"If you're going to be flying a drone and it happens to be in a neighborhood and you're there because you're working, let people know. As much as you can, let the people around there know, hey I'm going to be flying my drone around," says Mark Opgrande, spokesperson for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office.

Ostensibly, contractor was just inspecting gutters. Sure, that's all. The moments when it also sort-of wandered over and peeked in the neighbors' windows was purely operator clumsiness.

I am proud to note that in Oklahoma the person shooting down the drone will likely not be charged!

128 I blew a round thou on a whole-house steam humidifier some years back. Honest to God, it looked like a good idea. Little bitty stainless steampot, let steam rise into the stream of the hi-v air circulator system. And the effect was luxuriant. Pretty soon, I was having to take the heat coil out for a soak and scrape every day -- and our water is not noted for particularly (get it?) high lime content. So there's that.

A larger tank would have helped, but that would have taken some serious wattage to flash-boil. A pre-heater, but, again, wattage. Or a filter, and frequent and expensive changing of filter elements on humidifiers was what led me to the steamer in the first damn place.

As it turned out, "something" I did in further insulating the house took care of the winter dry problem, and after abandoning the project I found I did not need it anyway. But my wallet was still dry.

At the very least, I would feed that steam generator from the hot side, and monitor it closely for a while for mineral build-up. Make sure you make it accessible.

Couple days ago, they found a body by a country road.

    Today, I read, they've arrested a suspect.

That zombie post was great. A little too complicated for me, or maybe I'm just lazy.

It's true that most criminals have poor impulse control, and seem to be incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions. In my opinion the Coen Brothers do a great job of illustrating this in their movies.

174 There was a horrible murder in Ohio. Atty and wife adopt daughter and let her explore her black roots. Unfortunately, this meant hooking up with violent assholes. They went out of their way to help her loser bf and his family. BF rapes daughter and she breaks up with him. He stabs and beats her. While she is in a coma in ICU, parents refuse to allow bf to see her. He goes to their house and sledge hammers the father to death. He then texts the mom who is at the ICU to come home He sledge hammers her to death when she arrives.

Daughter takes her inheritance and hooks up with another loser bf. She pops out a kid and they both get arrested for posession for sales of a large amount of drugs. She is let out early from prison but thrown back in when she lends her car to some thug to do a robbery.

Any way, the sledge hammering bf was the subject of a BBC documentary so all the weenies are boo hooing over him.

Yesterday afternoon, Charles Payne of Fox Business Network was interviewing Rove and wasn't having any of his so called consultant expertise.

He prefaced the following with " people have the perception that you are part of the establishment Karl" and then point blank asked him if he was. Rove puffed out his chest and started bragging about if winning two presidential campaigns means you are part of the establishment, then yes. Payne said, " and you have lost the last two". Rove started sputtering that he wasn't in charge of the last two campaigns and so he can't be held responsible for those. Payne kept interrrupting his "it wasn't my fault" whine to say, "but you were a consultant, you were heavily involved in those campaigns on behalf of the Republican Party" and it went on and on with Rove starting to turn purple.

Charles Payne was my hero last night.

180 There are a few aspects of this website that I find abhorent, and no not the hobo hunting, or Drew, or Ewok flashbacks, no it is the anti red head sentiment.

Growing up in the old Southwest where the genes of the Gael used to be celebrated. I never encountered this, but then as ginger hatred spread in the declining crapistan called England, the stupid lowest form of anglophiles started aping it. The sort of people who think Cadbury's is good, and like to pepper their speach with such loathsome words as "chums", "smashing", "bloody", and among the younger generation: "brilliant". Of course all the badass K___s of England were red heads, from Richard the Lionheart to all the Tudors, to Prince Harry, a man whose curse is that the modern world is so degenerate that they will pay him a pension to play polo but won't let him hunt jihadis.

This was a way for smug non Celt, non Viking white people to sneer at the wrong sort of white people and pretend it is just a joke. They also get to feel sophisticated and oh so English, which I am sure they feel "is just ever so lovely"

And now I see this unamerican predjudice is becoming entrenched, my 75 yr old mother was actually in tears around Christmas after coming home from a business meeting where everyone was mocking someone for being red haired, she puts up with all their elitist leftist I'm too good for Houston, crap for the sake of her business but amid their denunciations of anyone who criticizes Hilary, these supposed professionals were going tge old fire down below route.

Now I am no white nationalist, but red haired people have built our nation, from Erik the Red, and Christopher Coumbus to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Calvin Coolidge, great red headed American presidents.

Sure there are evil red heads, but for every Kathy Griffin, Judas Iscariot, or Esau, there have been other red heads such as a Andrew Jackson or Ghenghis Khan or Cromwell. Well maybe they were evil red heads too...

But for every Lenin, Trotsky, or Danny Bonaduce there is a Cump Sherman or Winston Churchill.

Look at the red heads in this country, and I tell you there is no group that better represents the ace of spades lifestyle and old fashioned Americanism than red headed red blooded Americans, which is probably why it is so fashionable to go after them.

Oh and the next time someone tells you gingers have no souls, remember Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, William Blake, and for the gays, Judy Garland.

So lay off the red heads, and stop mocking them, after all this child of a red head knows that is dangerous. You have to be careful around them, you never know what will set them off.

Anyway after she had her little cry she asked me to drive her to the range, since she can't drive at night since she is half blind.

233 How can the thought fail to occur to the Germans that if they are capable of feeling guilt and the Muslims are not, that they are better people, and therefore have no reason to feel guilty before them. If they think violence is evil and hate that aspect of their ancestors, they should have no problem feeling the same towards Muslim culture.

It's a very simple thought, yet for them it is unthinkable.

Many German advances in aviation and rocketry were born out of desperation more than anything else. The military bureaucracies in the UK and especially the US were loathe to interrupt the the production of systems already in the field. Hell, even an upgraded P-51 (the P-51H) was ready almost full year before the end of the war in Europe, but didn't go into production until after VE Day.

244 There is an argument that the reason the Germans were so good at engineering intricate devices is because they weren't so good at designing things that worked well.
The mindset was to get things to work thus through application of science instead of going around the problem by modifying the approach.

Simplicity and functionality is achieved through maturity of design, the saying goes, not by adding a secondary intermittent spring detent and two toggle arms to retard the oscillation interval.

248 There is an interesting doc film that was recently aired on TV called My Nazi Legacy. It's about the sons of Hans Frank and Otto von Wächter and a jewish human rights lawyer. It gets annoying in that Wachter's son refuses to acknowledged that his father is a war criminal. The guy is old and so what. But later you see how the neo nazis glom on to him bc of his father and then you think okay, enough. A lot of the filming takes place in Lemberg which is a beautiful city and once was mostly Jewish. Both Frank and Wachter became uber Catholics after the war. I think they did it bc they thought it would save their miserable lives. Both were opportunists and even before he went Nazi, Hans Frank was stealing the savings of widows and orphans.

250 I saw a program once about an early rocket plane used by the Germans in the the final days of the WWII.

It was a stubby affair with a total flight time of about 2 minutes. Launched from a ramp. Piloted by a crazy s.o.b. with a 20mm cannon and maybe a dozen rounds.

It was deployed straight up in to a bomber formation, the pilot would fire until out of ammo (or rocket fuel, or both), then bail out as the damn thing fell to earth.

    Wild.

Yes, they do, for purposes of comparing Italy to Germany. According to Wikipedia, Handel "was a German, later British Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London".
