24 You take your doggies for a walk.
They expect to go for a walk.
They demand to go for a walk, NOW.

I got more nagging from my dog than I did from anyone else.

Time to get up.
Time to go outside.
Time for a walk.
Time to check on the neighbors.
Time to go to work; there is yard work to be done.
Time to eat.
Time to check the perimeter, and check on the neighbors again.
Time for bed.

Like a friggen alarm clock.

26 You know about a decade ago the NSA was probably 'state of the art' in sniffing out terrorists communications. But the terrorists have evolved and realize what the hell is going on. So they're never going to find the really bad guys anymore.

I know Rick Perry will be harded hit, by having another acronym to forget, but the NSA needs to go. It's a dinosaur.

More 'boots on the ground' as in FBI agents seems a better investment than assuming some super geek with an unfathomable amount of data will somehow pause from pr0n surfing to find a bad guy.

33 "The nation's middle class, long a pillar of the U.S. economy and foundation of the American dream, has shrunk to the point where it no longer constitutes the majority of the adult population, according to a new major study.

The Pew Research Center report released Wednesday put in sharp relief the nation's increasing income divide, which is certain to be a central issue in the 2016 presidential race. It also highlights how various economic and demographic forces have eroded long-held ideals about maintaining a strong, majority middle class."

35 One conservative pundit wrote something like, "It is stupid to say all Muslims are terrorists, but Hillary is equally stupid to say terrorism has nothing to do with Islam".

There seems to always be this need to apologize for the stupid tea partier (or whoever), even though they NEVER say ALL Muslims are terrorists. Most conservatives really want to live with Muslims, despite Mohammad having been a murdering conqueror. But a percentage of American Muslims do indeed have sympathies, and many mosques act as a breeding ground that will spit out the occasional terrorist. We discovered the peaceful Farook extended family was supportive of the terrorist, for instance.

But still "we" (Joe Sixpacks) only want to pause the inflow, not expel citizens, for which we are called bigots, or stupid, even by "conservatives".

There are people saying ALL real Muslims are terrorists. We call them "radical Islamists". They support the killing of their Muslim brethren even, for not supporting violent jihad. But they are not "stupid" for saying that, they are quoting chapter and verse.

I refer to it as having to think for the listener. By that I mean, you have to preface whatever you are going to say with something like "of course not ALL Muslims are terrorists, but..."

Or "I'm not saying ALL gay people are perverts, but..."

Or "No, surely not ALL black people are idiots who voted for Obama, but..."

People are stupid. You have to do it, otherwise you waste all your time having to explain the preface, rather than discussing whatever point you really wanted to make.

It would have been more honest to just say, "Send us your money. We need it more than you do, and you left us you bastard."

A report of a man brandishing a weapon in the 14000 block of La Paz Drive was called in at 5:09 p.m. Monday, and deputies found Elrawi had gotten into a dispute with the victim, believed to be a neighbor, and allegedly began to chase the victim around with a sword and threatened to kill him, according to the newspaper.

Elrawi said he would "die and kill for Allah" before he fled, authorities told the Daily Press."

An interesting painting, considering the slaughter going on that year.

BTW, have I ever mentioned Frederic Morton's book A Nervous Splendor? It's about Vienna in the 1880s, during the short life of Crown Prince Rudolf, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. But it also delves into the other fascinating people alive at the time, Freud and Klimt, just to name two.

I think Morton invests Rudolf with too much promise (he all but says that, had Rudolf not killed himself in 1889, WWI would have never happened), but it's a good book just the same for a cold, wintry day.

a) If you can reconcile the Islamic faith to the Western traditional-liberal tradition, welcome.

b) If you are a little discomfited by those who have co-opted that Western traditional-liberal tradition to mean that we have to let parents 'transgender' their five-year-olds, welcome to the club, we've got a lot to talk about over...club soda. I'll buy the drinks.

c) If you believe that the appropriate response to this is to withdraw completely, to 'other' yourselves, to grow a broom out of your chin and put your wife in a Hefty bag and make sure your daughter marries some second cousin who'll slap the bag on her right after the wedding, to build an underground system of Sharia that you'd intend to impose on others one way or another, then we've got a problem.

d) And if you believe that 'othering' entitles you to take up arms against the culture and society that gave you a chance to move up the economic ladder, despite all its faults, then I've got a box for you and your friends.

Why do I think this? 131 There has always been "anti-Semitism", but it's more dangerous now.

There are subtle indication (and not so subtle) that it is getting worse even in this country. I see two things that worry me quite a bit. As a pretty avid social media skimmer, I see what I believe to be, a steady rising tide of anti-Jew rhetoric in this country, and another thing that I'm seeing is a pretty constant push back against Jews who would try to counter anti-Semitism.

I admit that my impressions could possibly be skewed by the fact that, as a Jew, I may be hyper-sensitive to anti-Semitic rhetoric in general, but I don't really think that's it. I believe that anti-Semitism is getting worse in this country and I think that there is less tolerance for those who would defend against it.

Here's why I think that anti-Semitism is much more dangerous for most people now. Everyone is familiar with the, "They came for the Jew first..." cliche. This time I think it will be proven out. Because of the hyper sensitivity to 'Islamophobia' Christians are already, and will be more so, targeted as much as Jews, but it is broader than that. Bigotry is being redefined. Today you can be a bigot for not being against something, but for not being against being against something.

Today, if you do not take the side of feminists, for example, you are a misogynist. If you are not pro-Black Lives Matter, you're a racist. If you're not pro-socialist you're a Nazi.

Eventually, as this redefined hyper anti-bigotry sentiment is allowed to propagate, a very large segment of society - most likely a majority of society - will find itself marginalized and the minority hyper anti-bigots will dominate over the majority.

The point that I wanted to make is this: Jews will not win out against anti-Semitism. They are to small a group to be able to prevail against it and their partisanship on the matter would be naturally viewed as hypersensitivity. Only non-Jews, who see not only that anti-Semitism is wrong, but also see where this will likely wind up, will be able to prevail against it.

Like I said, there is a good chance that I am already hyper sensitive to this which increases the odds that I'm wrong. I actually hope that I am. But if I'm not, a lot of people will lose by letting anti-Semitism continue to gain steam. Not only Jews, or for that matter, Christians.

My soap box for the month.

Two male Afghan air force students did not report for duty yesterday at their regular maintenance training at Moody AFB in Valdosta, Georgia. Both are assigned to the 81st Fighter Squadron. They have been at Moody since. February 2015 and were screened prior to their arrival in the United States more than a year ago. The students have trained alongside American counterparts for the entirety of 2015 and do not pose any apparent threat. There is a well-coordinated process among federal agencies to locate the individuals as quickly as possible and return them accordingly to the proper authorities to manage their present situation.

Be aware of them. Not as targets but focuses of trouble.

They are like bacteria. Harmless (or the body can control them) below a certain population.

Once that population reaches a critical level (determined by the health of your police and local government) then start the demands and the interference with other citizens.

The anger over the lack of acceptance of their death cult.

And then they begin to politicize what ever positions they can either get hired to or elected to.

And before you know it, you've got another Dearborn or Hamtrammck and all the Christians and Jews either flee or live in fear.

Several of the founders expressed concerns about importing too many "others" that don't share our foundations. Waters, that look of contorted hatred on Rachel Corrie's face as she was yelling at something or other.

I don't think its anti-semitism so much as something akin to PETA. Pro-palestinian leftists project an idealized innocence onto Palestinians, similar to PETA's romanticized, exalted notion of animals.

Of course PETA doesn't expect much of animals, it doesn't care if they kill each other or kill humans, but because they possess "innocence" it is always wrong for the human to kill them, even if in self defense.

The left has similar blind spots towards Palestinians and Muslims in general. How they treat each others or outsiders is irrelevant, but we, OTOH must never harm them.

PETA and these lefties are both rage-aholics, and taking up the cause of these darling innocents gives them an excuse to vent their hatred as "righteous indignation" against their fellow men.

Father, I am so thankful that You are our defense and so, I pray for everyone whose feet are planted in the soil of a fierce battlefield today. And for those who are weary and think they can't face another day, for those who are ready to give up or take a shortcut out, I ask that You would be their strength, that You would hold Your shield in front of their heart so that they can see clearly Your plan and purpose for the battle they're facing.

We know that You are the God Who does all things well and that You won't waste this time, so I pray that You would give each one of us faith to see the end, faith to see what will be on the other side. We love and worship You, in Your name we pray, amen.

This could be why we lose. We have consciences, we are constantly engaged in self examination, self criticism, examination of motives, etc.

Muslim rage is however, unreflective. It is merely anger directed outwards, and they don't care, or are in fact incapable of being aware of whether what motivates that anger is based on spite, envy, fear, bigotry, injured vanity, immaturity. They will not hesitate or pause in their quest.

But they are canny enough to observe conscience at work in the West and leverage it as a weapon against us, causing us to hesitate or falter, instead of assessing the situation accurately and acting decisively.

Nice thing about many trades is one can start one's own business, allowing freedom and profit. Using a degree means debt and moving to an employer, usually away from roots. There are always compromises.

In July 2010, Qosi plead guilty to charges of conspiracy and material support for terrorism before a military commission. His plea was part of a deal in which he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors during his remaining time in US custody. Qosi was transferred to his home country of Sudan two years later, in July 2012.

Qosi joined AQAP in 2014 and became one of its leaders. Qosi and other AQAP commanders discussed their time waging jihad at length in the video, entitled "Guardians of Sharia."

Agreed.

One of my better friends is a Messianic Jew, like Nicholas Thalasinos who was killed at San Bernardino.

My friend is actually the leader for a couple of congregations. He is very well traveled in the middle east. Conversations with him are always fascinating. He brings perspectives and insights that are not obvious to a typical WASP, or at least not obvious to this WASP.

Generally, I feel myself to be a pretty poor Christian relative to my Jewish friend. I take solace from C.S. Lewis's observation that there is a great yawning gulf between even a bad Christian, and a non-Christian. Rationalization is one of my strengths.

Whoops!

There is another aspect to Islam that many people don't grasp and that is that since it is a bellicose doctrine at it's core, it respects when others defend their doctrines and cultures and takes full advantage of those who don't.

This "Islam is a religion of peace," bullshit being spewed by western leaders is completely viewed by Muslims as weakness.

Every time Israel gives in to international demands for land for peace, Muslims see that as weakness. They lose respect for it and double the intensity of their hostility.

That's another reason why we have to begin to get serious with out leaders to start telling the truth about Islam. Muslims as snickering out of the sides of their mouths at our stupidity.

He said it would be a long, hard, bloody affair--a bloodbath--and people thought he was crazy. Remember those gentlemen and ladies in their finery, spreading out blankets for picnics overseeing the First Bull Run battlefield? Yeah, that.

So no, I strongly doubt a second civil war along those lines would be short. Unless, of course, someone employs nukes or nerve/bio agents. Hypothetically, if evil shit like that comes into play, there wouldn't be a country left to save.

Two things I always point to proving pisslam is not an Abrahamic faith are:

1) The concept of eternal paradise/heaven. In pisslam, paradise is a frickin' drunken whorehouse, a place of earthly desires. Heaven? Not so much.

2) The use of the word 'martyr' when discussing those who die for their faith. In Christianity, a martyr is murdered for his faith, while in pisslam a martyr deliberately kills others and themselves for their faith. In other words, pisslam's martyrs murder Christianity's martyrs.

363 Rubio moves upward in my estimation:

"Marco Rubio Quietly Undermines Affordable Care Act"

http://tinyurl.com/hw9829o (goes to NYT)

The risk corridors were intended to help some insurance companies if they ended up with too many new sick people on their rolls and too little cash from premiums to cover their medical bills in the first three years under the health law. But because of Mr. Rubio's efforts, the administration says it will pay only 13 percent of what insurance companies were expecting to receive this year. The payments were supposed to help insurers cope with the risks they assumed when they decided to participate in the law's new insurance marketplaces.

Mr. Rubio's talking point is bumper-sticker ready. The payments, he says, are "a taxpayer-funded bailout for insurance companies." But without them, insurers say, many consumers will face higher premiums and may have to scramble for other coverage. Already, some insurers have shut down over the unexpected shortfall.

Plus, he outfoxed the Smartest President Evah!

Mr.
Rubio says Mr. Obama compounded his problems by diverting risk corridor
funds to quell a 2013 furor over canceled insurance policies. That
year, the president announced that states could let insurers renew
canceled plans and continue coverage for several years even if those
policies did not meet the requirements of the federal health law.

Insurers
were shocked by the sudden change. They had set 2014 premiums on the
assumption that healthy people with old insurance policies would move
into the new marketplace, but Mr. Obama allowed many of them to stay
out.

Oopsie.

Like the new enemy, Trump hits us -verbally- very, very hard.

There's no lengthy, calm, measured, professorial thesis on big issues, of the kind we regularly see from Obama.

Trump just takes a firm position and smashes it into the public consciousness in brusque, simple, uncompromising language that everyone can understand.

And when it comes to ISIS, the American people are desperate for some kind of clarity.

As Obama is seen to be fiddling while Rome burns, Trump is seen, whether you agree with him or not, to at least have an understanding of the immediacy and scale of the threat and a clear determination to try and deal with it.

There's better ones out there for quick jobs, ones with plastic drums that are set up like big wheelbarrows to be rolled to and tipped into the pour, but these are actually decent and routinely available on sale in the $170 range.

Heh. It's been a while, but there was a scene in Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ where Jesus builds a table and Mary asks Him what it's for, to which he replies along the lines of, "you eat off it." She shakes her head and answers, "it'll never catch on."

The guy who did the framing on our remodel and some of the other work had some big long water levels.

Took one look and the bulb went on.

Need to know if the frame of your project car is flat? Bingo!

Went out and bought a hundred feet of 3/8in plastic tube and some blue food coloring...

And speaking of Jesus, I just remembered an Irish musical comedy called Return of the Winemaker, which postulates that Jesus was born in Galway and, instead of being a carpenter, the townspeople have him use his powers to turn water into wine and provide free booze to everyone.

Oftentimes I think the DIY job would be not too bad, if the situation were just like the one they depicted. But in repairs typically there's an unexpected snag: plumbing parts corroded open or shut so that a tactical nuke won't free them, idiosyncratic funky angles, inaccessible locations, warped wood, things out of true.
How do you deal with those, DIY shows?

481 Speaking of talented handymen, I worked on our house with a guy who was incredibly talented, and could do/fix anything. If I found out I had an inoperable brain tumor, I'd hand him my Dremel and ask him to see what he could do.

JEM @ #91, outstanding. I think that probably represents the common sense, open-minded reaction of most people. Doesn't translate instantly and easily into a visa or immigration policy, but it could be done. Think of how powerful an issue this would be, if a set of policies reflecting that sensible and very American ("who we are") approach, were in fact translated into specifics and spouted from the campaign stump. Sadly, doubtful we'll see that.

483 It's like those TV shows that make any and all house construction and repairs look like child's play.

What I get out of those shows is that every house in Canada has one or more of asbestos, black mold, shitty wiring, shitty plumbing, or water in the basement.

Also, all the walls they want to remove are always structural, and the code inspector will make shit up to nuke your budget.

484 Carpenters...

I don't often admit it, but in the mid-1970s, out in New Mexico, we tried selling Pyramid Greenhouses. Yes, official pyramid-power-channeling Cheops-angle pyramids!

Long story about our almost getting conned into working with another scam Pyramid Power company (honest to God con man, who went to jail), but through that we met Frank, former Hollywood set builder. Among his stories were building a whole Western town in So NM, and a working elevator for an episode of Mission Impossible. Had his blueprints for the big penis from Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex hanging in his bathroom. Wonderful man, he and his wonderful wife, Jean, befriended us idiots.

Anyway, we asked Frank about designing a pyramid greenhouse. Gave him just the "Cheops" angle, and that we wanted a same-angle base (four trapezoidal panels). Frank took a pencil, did a few figures on a 2x4, built a jig, cut the frame pieces, which included some crazy angles at the peak, assembled them in the jig, we added the plastic cover in the shop, then trucked the pieces out to his back yard, built the foundation, set up the diamond-shaped structure, put on the flashing, and finally added the doorway.

We walked inside, he looked up at where one panel met another at the corners and noted that there was an almost indiscernible gap (on the inside of course). He said, "I'll have to adjust that by 1°." Stunning!

We actually sold a few. They were genuinely good greenhouses!

Then an employee sabotaged and wrecked us, but that's another story.

Now maybe it's just me, but I don't recall Ali issuing any statement after the Charlie Hebdo killings or the massacre in Paris or the nightmare in San Berdoo. But he's right up off the mat and into the ring when it comes to Teh Donald.

Go away, Clay.Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at December 10, 2015 11:51 AM (X6fMO)

The Nation of Islam is using Mohammed Ali's name (and credibility) to advance its message. Ali suffers from Parkinson's Syndrome; rather, that variation of it called Dementia Pugilistica. Given the known course of that condition and the length of time with which Ali has struggled with it (since at least 1980), I suspect Mohammed Ali, one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, is at a pont where he doesn't know his own name or where he is at any given moment. I strongly doubtAli is in any shape to discuss immigration issues.

So you're essentially smearing a couragous, brain-damaged fighter who showed more heart than you ever will. Fuck Donald Trump.

If there was a fix, it's certain Ali didn't know about it. Insofar as Liston is concerned, the mob had its hooks into him for years.Liston had a drug problem (and women problems and gambling problems) andran in some dark circles. I think he used that brushing punch to the temple as his cue for the dive. He didn't try too hard to make it look believeable.
