As for buying you a drink, I'm on SSDI; I have heart issues (as in my heart pumps at 50% power) and am the 'proud' owner of my second ICD (I've been shocked 10 times now, which means I've died 10 times since the first one was implanted in January '10). I don't even go to bars anymore, except for the bar in my living room! (See: Southern Irish Coffee)

IrishEi, I'm twelve blocks up from that address, 87th St and 35th Ave. You wouldn't recognize the place now. Hell, I moved here in January of '85 and I don't recognize the place. I cant believe people defend this guy Prieto they executed in Virginia. He murdered 9 people. In Virginia he kidnapped a young couple shot the guy, the girl ran, shot her in the back and then raped her while she died. Raped and killed a 15 y/o in California. Was here illegally from El Salvador. He was not mentally retarded as the nutters claimed. The courts do not have to entertain endless appeals. They cut him off when he challenged the use of pentobarbital - the drug used every day in hospitals and in prior executions. The judge said you had 5 years to challenge it but waited until the day before the execution to do so? Denied! They also whined that the drug was not tested for sterility. LOL

Listening to Fox while driving to the airport this AM, I heard the Huckster make the excellent point (often made here as well) that Utah and Texas, two states with the highest rates of gun ownership, also have the lowest rates of gun homicide, while California, Illinois and New Jersey, all with terribly restrictive gun laws, have some of the highest.
Lefties say that's because you can buy guns in other states. But how is that even a rational response? It doesn't address the evidence (low rates in high gun ownership states) and it's nonsensical to punish inoffensive gun owners in Idaho for Newark's violence anyway.
What is obvious is that the Blue social model has failed. Just like everything else about Progressivism, foreign policy, economics, centralized government generally, the Blue model in Newark or Chicago leads directly to gun violence.
If people want to end mass shootings, those people should inculcate conservative values in their kids and advocate Red policies in their towns. Mostly, anyone against gun violence should vote against Democrats.
Pretty straightforward.

IrishEi, back in the late '80s, there was a serious cocaine problem here. There was one time a body bodies dumped from moving car as it turned a corner. One man, Manuel de dios Unanue, ran a newspaper called El Crimen, which took on the drug dealers. He was assassinated while sitting in a bar on 83rd St near Roosevelt. The hit man came all the way from Colombia; he was caught. Also, there used to be a restaurant down around 78th St and Roosevelt called Chibcha Restaurant, which was more of a nightclub. A night there for a couple could easily cost $200-300 dollars. Back in the late '80s, I was watching some football on tv from Medellin with my ex MiL. Next to the goal was an advertisement for 'Chibcha Restaurant of Jackson Heights'. Now why would a restaurant in Jackson Heights have ads at a football game in Medellin? And just who from Medellin would travel to a restaurant in Jackson Heights?
There was a guy from Argentina who had opened a laundromat on 85th St and 37th Ave. He had on the sign the logo of a team from Argentina called Huracán, a hot air balloon. He was shot and killed right on the sidewalk in the afternoon in broad daylight (his blood was on a parking meter for a while). I thought the porsche lawsuit was based on it exploding in flames after impact. They are assuming he survived or wd have survived the impact.

The lawsuit alleges that the car was defective because it didn't have a crash cage and a racing fuel cell. Basically, the daughter is saying it should have been designed as a race car. But it wasn't a race car, it was a passenger car that was being driven on a public street as if it were a race car, at speeds of over 100 mph (LA investigators estimated the speed on impact at 94 mph). Walker may have been alive long enough to inhale smoke from the fire, but he had multiple crush injuries from the force of the impact, and it's doubtful he would have been able to survive them.

It's a strange situation because, being a beach town, homes are rented on a seasonal basis. You can get a 4-bedroom Winter rental which runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day for about $1,000/month. Then that same home will rent for perhaps $20,000 to $30,000 for the Summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day.) So these families move in after Labor Day, send their kids to school here. Where they go for the summer, I have no idea.
Nearby Asbury Park (which never recovered from the riots of the 60s,) has had a huge influx of gays from New York. Most of the locals are very happy with this since they are purchasing lots of the (formerly) beautiful old Victorian homes that were sadly turned into drug infested rooming houses, and renovating them to their former glory. They have also rejuvenated the Asbury Park commercial area and there are many great restaurants and shops popping up. And slowly but surely, the gays are replacing the obscenely corrupt local government there.
At the same time, there are several storefront mosques that have appeared, seemingly overnight, and more than a few halal butchers. Even a pizza shop with a "halal" sign in the window.

IrishEi, as for the muslim/Indian situation, we have plenty of Asian Indians here, too, and boy do they hate the muzzies. I try to frequent them when I need something from a bodega. I stay away from the halal restaurants and grocery stores. They are down around 75th-73rd Sts. Be glad you moved. That mosque I mentioned is at 71st and Roosevelt. 74th St, between 37th and Roosevelt is called Little Calcutta. There are more sari palaces than you can shake a stick at. Supposedly, years ago, Jackie O purchased a sari there for a wedding. I even once worked with a woman from Jersey City who travelled to Little Calcutta to do her shopping.

All the shit that is being leveled at VW (& their subsidiary Porsche) is a direct result of their refusal to unionize.

Army retires green service uniform after 61 years
As of Oct. 1, the "Green Class As" are no longer permitted for wear.
The Army Green Uniform of 1954's dark green color, specifically "shade 44", was a throwback to the distinctive color for rifle units back in Revolutionary times, and was recommended to the Army by scientists and fashion experts.

What was always amazing to me was that GM must have made a gazillion of the 6-71 industrial diesels that were workhorses in all sorts of applications, so if any US manufacturers made a diesel that was reliable you would have thought it would be GM.

Not uncommon with diesels. It's the high compression ratio. Incidentally, for ethanol to produce its potential energy, you need a similar compression ratio. Can be done with a variable supercharger, but not back in the day.
The batteries were not the problem. There's just no reason to think that an otherwise pretty-good gasoline V8 would perform well as a diesel. And yes it's true, GM built some awesome diesels. There's no evidence of engineers from their diesel divisions having anything to do with the morphodite. Sad chapter.

first 4-stroke engine until 1980. They did produce the 6.2/6.5-liter diesels offered in GM trucks between 1982 and 2000.

I knew some band members who were based on the Jersey Shore and who would go on the road every summer when the rents went up and when there were more gigs at state and county fairs around the country.
I haven't been back there in a long time. I have heard that it is a lot more built up and has been for years.

Recently saw 'the Rock' in 'San Andreas'. Pretty decent special effects. 'Everest' was good but would be awesome on an imax size screen. There's one scene where they have to cross a 20 foot wide ravine, with a hundred plus foot drop, on an aluminum stepladder that would be bloodcurdingly scary on a big screen.

I have seen many, many cities including, but not limited to: Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, London, Sydney, Dublin, Amsterdam, Munich, Zurich, Innsbruck, Caracas, Valparaiso, Mexico City, etc.
I have no problem with others referring to their nearby city as The City because I am secure in the knowledge that New York is the only true CITY. I have seen many others and they just don't measure up.

This guy was Aspergers or Autistic. Certain of it from the Daily Mail article. He had no business going into the military or ever having a gun. His mom should've known this. The idea that a spectrum kid can do well in the military is a Forrest Gump fantasy made in Hollywood.
My kid has Aspergers. I think a lot of these spree killers were spectrum. I really wish an Aspergers/Autism diagnosis would disqualify for gun ownership.

Even though statute is clear gun manufacturers have 0 liability for what idiots do with their product. A loser I may have been and may remain, but I don't see that I would have been less of one by taking on a financial obligation that I couldn't meet just to get away from my parents' house.

Once my doctor suggested Chantix to help me quit smoking. I looked it up and the list of potential side effects made my hair stand on end.

I think I'd rather take my chances with lung cancer, thankyouverymuch. If I try to quit smoking, I'll probably have all of those side effects anyway. I don't need Chantix to amplify them.

More people are killed per month by doctors and nurses than are killed by spree killers over years. Google it and do research. Exactly so. Extended families living under one roof were the norm for most of human history. I think it was the rise of the youth culture and the sexual revolution that started the idea that you needed to move out the moment you turned 18.
My dad lived with his parents until he joined the Navy at age 20 in 1940. He fought in WWII, then got out in 1946 and moved back into his parents' house. It was only after he got a job and got married that he bought a house of his own. I don't think anybody would have considered him a loser at the time.
With today's economy and crushing student loan debt, I think we're going to be seeing more and more 26 year olds living with their parents. What other choice do they have? They're not all losers; they've been robbed.
