12 Mornin, 'rons and 'ronettes.

One of the great, if unknown, American wits was prospector, writer, gambler, fight manager and all-around raconteur Wilson Mizner. The New Yorker writer Alva Johnston did a series of profiles about Wilson and his brother, architect Addison, which formed the basis for the fascinating book The Legendary Mizners, and composer Stephen Sondheim used the brothers' lives as the subject for his musical Bounce.

At one time, Mizner was married to Mary Yerkes, widow of multimillionaire Charles T. Yerkes, and the two lived together in the Yerkes' lavish Fifth Avenue mansion. During the marriage, Mizner wanted to insure Mary's life without her knowing about it, but the insurance company required a sample of her urine before they would write out a policy.

What to do?

The indomitable Mizner approached a demure young librarian of his acquaintance and asked her for a small favor. "If you do this for me," he promised, "I'll treat you and your mother to a first-class, round-trip all-expenses-paid tour of Europe."

When the lab report came back, it seemed that the pretty young librarian had a. . .well, let's just say a rather awkward Sandra Fluke-type disease. After a little while had gone by, she called Mizner to ask about her trip to Europe.

"Europe!" Mizner bellowed. "You couldn't pee your way to Hoboken!"

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Did you hear that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed an "alliance" with a "national social justice advocacy organization for transgender people" primarily to promote gender-appropriate restroom access? Part of a larger OSHA program to partner with groups "committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries, and illnesses."

The poor dears are facing fatal discrimination. Massive widespread discrimination. Hundreds of millions, possibly billions, of transgenders are having huge sadz because their cow-orkers don't like them in either bathroom and they have to hold it in, threatening bursting. Government to the rescue!

I went to a newly opened restaurant not long ago, and there were ten individual restrooms in the basement. "Keeping meat consumption to levels recommended by health authorities would lower emissions and reduce heart disease, cancer, and other diseases," [former UN Sec Gen Kofi no Cream] Annan told The Guardian Sunday.

"And of course there are alternative sources of protein. For example, raising insects as an animal protein source," Annan said. "Insects have a very good conversion rate from feed to meat. They make up part of the diet of two billion people and are commonly eaten in many parts of the world."

"Eating insects is good for the environment and balanced diets," Annan said.

It might be possible to argue against Annan's point factually, although you gotta admit the mockery is a lot more fun.

He's talking about raising insects. Now, eating bugs you find in the woods is eco as hell, just on the face of it. Once you put bugs in a factory farm environment, you get some problems. They produce one hell of a lot of CO2, for one thing. Hyuuge. Possible worse than the silage-stomached bovine methane thing. I suspect Certain Parties have not thought this through. Shocked?

Think of the misery inflicted on the poor insects. This will come up, bet on it.

In a place where people still speak of honor and honor heroism you might occasionally produce a man who advances in the face of rifle fire, while outnumbered and meets a threat head on.

166 Give us this day our daily bread bug...

Actually chickens eat a lot of bugs. I saw some program on new age farming techniques where an area is fenced off with low weight portable fencing. Cattle brought in to Plot A. Then they get moved to Plot B. After three days the cattle crap is all nicely fly and maggot infested and the chickens are brought in to Plot A. Then turkeys. Then Plot A rests until it grows nice and tall and is cut for hay. Lather, rinse repeat with Plots B - Z.

The farmers dollar yield per acre was pretty phenomenal.

My dad's unit was one of the ones who liberated it. He wasn't there, as he was wounded a few weeks before and was recovering in England, but I have a photo of his army buddies at Mauthausen.

169 Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of my mother's liberation from Mauthausen.
