Michigan contractor finds 14,000-year-old mastodon skeleton in backyard

Daniel LaPoint Jr. made the discovery outside his Bellevue Township home in November and, with the help of neighbor Eric Witzke, dug up 42 bones from the prehistoric creature. The bones will be donated to a local museum, but the two men are keeping a few fragments for themselves.

15 Searcy is a pussy. Last year on FB, during the NCAA tournament, I was rooting for UNC to lose to help my bracket, and for Duke to win, because Jabari Parker was my favorite prospective draft pick. He freaked out, claimed I was a "fraud" because I had previously rooted for UNC to win ( that's how brackets work). He blocked me from FB when I pointed out to him that he was being an idiot.

57 Regarding Duke, you can bet the donors put the fear of God in them (Franklin Graham notwithstanding).

I got called in as a consultant to a university once when their fountain was not running. It was splashing on the floor so they did the easy thing and just shut it off. The face of it was covered in the names of the donors for the building. When one of them found out, he called the university president and told him" "You know that five million I'm putting up for the new sports complex? Well you will not see a dime until I see water flowing over my wife's name" The president then went to Facilities and raised the roof.

You can bet they got some not so subtle back channel calls.

Still, the Muslims are going to do the call to prayer from out front of the chapel in the quadrangle and then move. Once they feel they have territory they don't give it up easily.

89 Local radio guy is ripping Duke. Saying that rather than admit that they made the decision because of money, they "Lied to the country" about the reason for the cancellation. I still haven't read this morning's stories, but this guy is fired up. Really stupid for Duke to get involved in a controversy during the two months when the School is generally in the middle of the national sports scene.

American Sniper, non-epic version.

It's a very good movie. It's impossible not to compare it to Hurt Locker, as the settings and themes are similar. It's different mainly in that being based on a real guy, Bradley Cooper's character is reserved and understated where Jeremy Renner was an outsized personality.

The pacing is interesting. It's more like a European movie than a Hollywood first act, second act, third act story arc. Things happen. You don't necessarily get told how every firefight ends, but when you see Kyle back home you know he survived it.

The Bandersnatch Boys, who fancy themselves film buffs, loved it and thought it was Cooper's best performance to date. I was impressed by his physicality. He gained 40 pounds of muscle for the role, but it's not sculpted body builder muscle, he's just big. I like big guys.

I wondered if it was a little war-porny, but the Boys didn't think so. Again like Hurt Locker it did give the sense of very realistic combat.

95 I'll see some good schools (including Word of God, which has produced John Wall and CJ Leslie in recent years).

I remember when our local boys beat them. Damn fine program there. Almost nobody beats them.

We had 4 future D-1 players including future NBA'er Jonny Flynn and future NFL'er James Starks, who was an excellent B-ball player as well.

Have fun, man! Should be some excellent B-ball.

This is why we took away my grandmother's car keys. She backed out of her garage and then couldn't remember how to drive. Then she claimed she didn't recognize her car (she'd had it for 8 years). My family came to the decision that, nope, no more driving for you.Posted by: nnptcgrad at January 16, 2015 08:17 AM (wrS2o)****************My grandfather had a minor wreck with my uncle in the car and that is when he decided to stop driving. He had been legally blind for years though, so it was kind of insane that he was driving at all. After that he would drive his riding lawnmower to the grocery store. When he was about 80. Wearing a cowboy hat.

101 Thanks, Citizen X, I'm sure I'll have fun. Last time I saw W.O.G., they weathered a furious comeback by High Point Christian to squeak out a win. I believe at the time, their Coach was 88-7 over the last four years. Definitely a big time program. What school do you follow, if you don't mind me asking.

111 "This is why we took away my grandmother's car keys. She backed out of her garage and then couldn't remember how to drive..."

My mother in law will turn 93 in a few weeks and is still driving.

One of her cars is always in the body shop being repaired - always because "someone must have hit it in a parking lot". Of course, the sides of her garage are pretty beaten up.

She pulls out in front of traffic, changes lanes without bothering to look and can't see at all at night.

We can't take her keys away because she thinks it will take away her independence (although with her millions she could easily afford a Rolls and chauffeur. The only thing to do is let them go until they have a major incident.

What is leading to such ineffectiveness? Obama is going full throttle even tho the country said no, and our side is giving in to him. I thought we had checks and balances? Was it all a joke? We really have no way to stop him? Was every a Republican who ran in this last election just shining us on--they really play for the other side? I am seeking some explanation.......

115 Regarding "Kevin Williamson... dissing the entire pseudoscience canon...."

/hops on soapbox

It's absurd to lump all those things together. Wonderful for click-bait, though, I suppose.

Just for one example, NUCCA upper cervical adjustment (a very gentle, specialized kind of chiropracty) relieved my wife from decades of migraines in one adjustment. Most of chiropracty is valueless-to-dangerous, absolutely, but not all.

I have even had too much "anecdotal" experience over three decades suggesting that there's more to homeopathy than we can scientifically validate, yet, even if it's also my experience that 96% of what is popularly claimed for it is crap (and much of what passes for "homeopathy" simply isn't, in classical terms).

It's like vitamins. Most supplements are worthless, and people in their nutritional ignorance are more likely to throw their vitamin balance off with supplements than actually do themselves any good. But, if you are for some reason severely lacking in some fundamental nutrient, vitamin therapy is just what you need. You don't throw the baby of B12 out with the bathwater of moon in Pisces with Venus rising!

The health industry's snake-oil salesmen we have always with us. Finding real health in the haystack is tricky, sorting out the effective from the superstitious, the St John's Wort from the powdered rhino horn.

So, I like to always bear in mind the wise words (paraphrased from memory) of Mark Twain:

Don't believe everything you read in health books. You might die of a misprint.

My grandma occasionally complains about that, but then she calls us at 8 pm asking why it's so dark and where's her morning paper (for the next day). Her lack of independence keeps other people safe.
