Early Morning Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Good morning.

Yesterday we took a look at a couple of extraordinary dads. Today, not so much.

Imagine a man such as he sullying the good name of Congress.

Geraldo has been running off at the mouth again. First he tweeted out about how Obama got his ass beat by a bunch of "angry old white folks" in the midterms. Then he tweeted this:

Yeah. He's talking about this guy:

Oh! But Geraldo has a new selfie of his own to post:

Have you ever met a grown man so desperate for attention?

Heck I could do an entire post based upon Geraldo's cries for attention, but I won't. However, and I'm only partly ashamed to admit this, I probably will watch a few episodes of the new Celebrity Apprentice just to see how long before someone jacks him up.

Lorenzo Lamas, Kate Gosselin, and Terrell Owens also join the cast. That's a lot of douchebaggery in one place!

Speaking of goofy:

I see a Movie Night With The Morons in our future.

Have a good day, folks.

3 I knew Geraldo Rivera when he was Jerry Rivers and he and his Puerto Rican "Young Lords" were a wholely owned subsiderary of Nelson Rockefeller's Liberal Republicans. He was a blivet then and still is a blivet today.

Gupta has a segment on CNN about Dementia Village, aka De Hogeweyk or Hogewey, which is a gated model village setting in Weesp, in The Netherlands.

It's pretty cool.

An enclosed community, with a grocery store, post office, etc on acres of land, but it is enclosed, so that the people living there can move around "freely" but never get lost.

24/7 care by dementia trained staff.

It's very nice.

We can never read into these things.

If they take the law word for word, how could they rule otherwise, but we saw it before, so I am a bit nervous about this.

All of the squishyness shouldn't be injected into this case, but again, it happened before.

I thought they had a number of cases of "proof" that this was how the law was intended, as a strong-armed tactic to force states to comply. I think that is the only thing that will save us, coupled with the actual text. Tying the text with intent.

So much for that equality under the law thing:

Minneapolis public school officials are making dramatic changes to their suspension policy by requiring the superintendents office to sign off before students of color can be sent home.

Beginning Monday, every proposed suspension of black, Hispanic or American Indian students that does not involve violent behavior will first be reviewed by Johnson or someone on her leadership team. The school district is also reducing its police presence at its schools after finding inconsistencies and questions in how schools used police in disciplinary matters.

"Changing the trajectory for our students of color is a moral and ethical imperative, and..."

Meanwhile, over at one of the internet's tentpoles, star courts are a thing:

Twitter has granted moderating superpowers to a tiny feminist nonprofit. On Thursday, the nonprofit organization Women, Action, and the Media, abbreviated WAM!, announced a new initiative with Twitter, to try to make the service safer for women.

WAM, in effect, got super powers within Twitters moderating environment. After submitting an abuse report to Twitter, users can now also submit one to WAM. WAM will make sure the userss claims are credible, then escalate the report in Twitters system, flagging it for immediate handling by the companys moderators.

Boy, equality under the law really taking it in the neck this morning:

We should stop putting women in jail. For anything.

The case for closing womens prisons is built on the experiences of formerly incarcerated women and activists who recognize that women who are mothers and community builders can find their way forward when they respected and supported. It is possible to imagine a future without womens prisons; whether its achievable will require a bigger shift in thinking.

Meanwhile, your Canadian tax dollars at work:

The University of British Columbia is building an exclusive new college at a cost of more than $127 million, but Canadian students need not apply. The college will house only high-paying international students, most of them from China.

The website for the college, which targets wealthy overseas Asian students, promises round the clock support, a "custom curriculum, and lower class sizes. Students will pay more than $50,000 a year for the privilege which includes tuition, accommodation and health care. "You can only apply to Vantage College if you are an international
student, not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident," says the
Vantage College website.

The Canadian Federation of Students says UBC's priorities are wrong and the university should be looking at supporting existing students.

245 1. Objects on the surface of the earth at the Equator travel at a higher linear speed than objects closer to the poles (they have to travel a larger circumference in the same length of time)

2. In the Northern Hemisphere, as something (water, air) moves from south to north, it tends to migrate to the east because they are traveling faster than objects to their north.

3. At the same time, if something is moving from north to south, it is going slower than the objects to their south, and they tend to lag behind, or to the west.

4. So, if there is a low pressure area such as a hurricane (or a sink drain), the air (or water) moving toward the center of an area will initiate a move toward the right as it approaches the center, thus establishing a counterclockwise spin. Hence low pressure weather systems rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and high pressure systems rotate clockwise.

5. The opposite happens in the Southern Hemisphere.

6. This phenomenon does not hold true with toilets, because most toilets have a pre-formed shape and directionality to the flushing jets that overwhelms the hemispheric effect.

Thank you very much.

Nearly $67 million of the money raised by the PAC has been contributed by Steyer himself. Every dime spent has been spent either in favor of Democrats or against Republicans. "

286 246 >>Atheist to sue military over denial of application to become a chaplain

Uh, don't they already have them? They're called psychiatrists.

What expertise and training could this so-called "Atheist Chaplain" provide the troops?

I suspect it's simply an attempt to get rid of chaplains altogether.

Ours at Quantico was a beast. Triathlete. Used to run up and down the column encouraging everyone while we were puking and passing out from heat exhaustion, while he barely broke a sweat.
