  • Cisco is acquiring Splunk in a $28 billion deal. (Bloomberg)

If you were thinking Elon Musk overpaid for Twitter - and he did - then rest assured that the market hasn't come to its senses.

What is Splunk? I was under the impression that it was a log aggregation tool, which would never be worth $28 billion.

    It is.

7 I think the last several Windows 10 updates ate my laptop. It started locking up and getting slow. It eventually just became a brick and did nothing. I fixed it with Linux Ubuntu. I had success with Mint on an old HP workstation (a 15+years old ws), so I thought I'd try Ubuntu on bricked laptop. Laptop is running fine now. Well, so far. I just did all this on Tuesday and Wed.

27 Today would have been my mother's 108th birthday.

She said all her life people had trouble remembering the exact day, because the 22nd is often the first day of fall -- but not always. Thus people thought her birthday could be the 21st or 23rd. I found it easier to remember after reading Lord of the Rings. Remember, Bilbo's birthday, and Frodo's, both fell on Sept. 22.

40 Wifi in the area was out yesterday. A service truck was in the parking lot, and I talked to the tech, who was just taking care of another tenant's cable issues. He said the wifi outage was widespread as part of their system has to coordinate with the power company (OG&E). OG&E has three guys in their whole operation that work on that system, all in OK City. Evidently they did their magic or last night's brief power outage rebooted everything. That sounds technical.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at September 22, 2023 06:14 AM (9UlRk)

80 Sorry, you are usually spot on with your comments but you don't understand Splunk. When the company first opened its doors 20 years ago, it did sell a log ingestion and query engine but a) the ingestion and querying engines were orders of magnitude speedier than anything else on the market; b) the engine made it relatively easy to directly query the logs rather than having to go through pre-packaged aggregation and filtering layers; and c) the engine was initially aimed at IT operations professionals rather than security professionals and, at the time, the concept of using logs for activities like performance and availability management was revolutionary. Over the years, Splunk did expand into security information and event management and, on the IT operations side, built a platform that ingests and analyses metrics, traces, end user experience data as well as logs. Validating its efforts in both of these markets, Splunk is a 'leader' in the Gartner Magic Quadrants for both Security Information and Event Management and Application Performanc Monitoring and Observability. So, actually, Cisco 's acquisition makes sense.

Posted by: Will at September 22, 2023 06:15 AM (V852N)

81 According the Google, "Splunk," is headquartered in San FranCISCO, where it is run by Gary Steele such that it has revenue, (gross?, annual?,) of $3.65 billion. Carry the one, and that comes out to about $10 million per day; which means that if Splunk has no overhead, then Cisco can expect its acquisition of Splunk to pay for itself in about two thousand eight hundred daze given a zero percent time value of money.

"Bukkake" must have been taken, so it was named "Splunk" instead.

Federal prosecutors have charged Hillary Wang, a National Security Agency employee for 14 years, with theft of government property and unauthorized removal and retention of classified materials.

It is believed Wang used her Top Secret security clearance to illegally download an estimated 16 million pictures of sexual nature off of unsuspecting Americans’ mobile phones and computers.

181 Sixteen million.

Let's say you download one a second, all day, during work hours. 40 hour "work" week, that's 144,000 a week.

For 16 million pics, that's 111 work weeks, or over two years, worth of doing nothing but downloading dicpics.

That's just dedication, man. And ever second spend doing that is a second not spent harassing and oppressing people.

Let's make a quota for them.

Do many men actually say this (?) because I cannot imagine FenSpouse doing so. He'd put it in a different way unless he was going for a laugh. There's this girl-probably in her early twenties who runs around the neighborhood. She has long blonde hair and is very pretty. When I'm in the car he says "Hey, Bloooooondie" as in the Eli Wallach voice from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and I laugh. I say, "Hopefully, you don't shout that out to her when you're alone"because 1. She might not know the reference and 2. She will send her father out to punch your lights out." 😉

I say that because he might consider her bangable if he were single and much younger but he wouldn't use that term.

263 Musk DID overpay for Twitter.

The problem was, he had second thoughts, and was trying to back out. Recall the discussion on the # of bots on the platform, and other issues with the system, to get the price lowered or to scuttle the deal.

But they forced him to either buy it, or be out a lot of money. I'm not sure the amount, but they probably had him legally over a barrel.

My opinion is: they forced him to buy it out at that high, inflated price. And if you're going to pay $$Billions of your own money (not Disney as a company, not Microsoft as a company, you as a you), then maybe it is now his very expensive toy. And he's going to play with it as much as he wants, because he was forced to despite later misgivings.

Makes me wonder how much SpaceX (and thus, Musk) is making, launching the payloads of other organizations into space. Probably a hell of a lot, since they've seemed to have mastered both quality and quantity in delivery systems.
