The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“We apply the same laws for everyone. Our job is to pursue justice without fear or favor. Our job is not to do what is politically convenient. Our job is not to take orders from the president, from Congress or from anyone else about who or what we criminally investigate.” US Attorney General Merrick Garland

What actor's strike. That Son of a Bitch said that with a straight face. The actors are in DC and not LA.

SMOD with a catch.

Will an asteroid change life on Earth as we know it in just 159 years?

That’s the fear NASA scientists have, and the situation sounds like it’s straight out of the movie “Armageddon.”

Scientists at the organization believe a huge asteroid known as Bennu could take out an area the size of Texas in the year 2182,” according to the New York Post.

The Post reported, “On September 25, 2135, Bennu will make a close fly-by past Earth and has a miniscule chance through a pass through a “gravitational keyhole” that would send the space rock on a collision course for the planet in 2182 — 159 years from now.”

Scientists Working in Antarctica Unwittingly Started to Develop a New Accent

The distinctiveness of the accent heard in a place reflects that place’s isolation. It’s probably no coincidence that, as almost every place in the world has become less isolated, accents have become less distinctive. In these days of vanishing forms of regional speech, if you wanted to hear a new one coming into being, you’d have to go to the ends of the Earth — or one specific end of the Earth, anyway, as demonstrated not long ago by researchers from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Taking and analyzing recordings made over the course of one winter, they discovered that a new accent has begun to take shape in English as spoken in Antarctica.

Chattering while speaking is not an accent.

Median voter theorem, again

Sweden looks set to miss its legislated climate targets, the latest sign of how combating global warming is slipping down the policy agenda.

The nation — the first globally to set a milestone target for net zero emissions — won’t reach that goal for 2045 with current measures, according to the center-right government’s 2024 budget submitted on Wednesday. It cited the tough economic climate along with a plunging krona, expecting to also fall short on other targets for protecting the environment.

What a web that was weaved.

A true crime book writer from Lincoln, Nebraska, working on a project about the 2017 dismemberment murder of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe allegedly developed a “romantic interest” with the Tinder killer inmate responsible for the horrific crime and extorted a corrections nurse at his behest before he was even sentenced to death row.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Chipmunk Emporium

On 21 Sep 1971

The first edition of the new BBC TV music show 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' was aired. Presented by Richard Williams, the show included; film clips of Jimi Hendrix from Monterey Festival playing 'Wild Thing', Bob Dylan playing 'Maggies Farm', plus America and Lesley Duncan 'live' in the studio. The influential show went on to enjoy a run from 1971 to 1987. According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys—doormen in grey suits. The songs they could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. via thisdayinmusic.com

Interesting tidbit of history there. I did not know that about the show.

41 Currently reading a great book by one of my favorite famous people - Mike Rowe. It's a collection of stories and vignettes that he has told on his podcast of the same name - "The way I heard it". There's a story about Jim Croce in there -- he had written a letter to his wife and mailed it before boarding the private plane that would crash and end his life. She received the letter 5 days after he died.

Outstanding book. I will likely read it again when I finish it.

__________

Concerned enough to send a probe to grab a sample and return it to earth. Launched years ago. The idea being... what is the asteroid made of and can it be nudged out of an orbit that would impact earth, or otherwise be destroyed.

The sample is due to land in Utah... I think in a couple days. Pretty cool. First asteroid sample return mission.

Most of us will be dead and gone when/if this thing hits... so YMMV.

89 Somewhat on topic, like words out of the actor's mouth, I've had it with the deconstruction of language fans. Without a common understanding of and agreement to meaning of words, communication is impossible.
It helps to remember that without words, the most common means of communication is hitting each other. Ask any toddler.

The "Saros" is a period of exactly 223 synodic months, after which point the sun, earth, and Moon return to nearly identical alignment. The term was first used by Edmund Halley back the day, although his usage may have been a little incorrect.

This is different, but close to the Metonic Cycle of about 19 years.

I'll come back after a while, turn it on, and it will boot up normal. That seems weird. Otherwise, it runs like a trooper. It's on now. I do like Linux. At some point, I'll need to actually learn it so I can troubleshoot properly. My UNIX knowledge is limited.

Good. This takes the matter squarely out of the hands of any Court, as the State's POWER to quell an Invasion is clearly enumerated IN the U.S. Constitution.

All TX A.G. Paxton has to tell the Court now is: FYNQ.

It forces the D.C. Executive to HAVE TO ACT. (we probably won't like the acts he directs.)

Legally, this is now a matter of Sovereign to Sovereign, and Executive to Executive. The Courts have fuck-all to do with it, insofar as Jurisdiction is concerned. The Courts have NO Jursdiction here.

This world is not your home.

As with all things built by men, they ultimately fail.

There is a world where justice and righteousness hold sway. What you actually loved about America were the rights acknowledged by the Founders that actually stem from the Creator of all things in that righteous kingdom.

And you mourn the destruction of that acknowledgment, perhaps consciously because you despise the men and women that would enshrine themselves as the gods of this world.

But spiritually, intrinsically, in the recesses, you mourn because you long for the home you belong in, even if the conscious mind doesn't always grasp this,

All people are fish out of water on this side of the eternal divide.

259 Very small progress on the Hotrod Ford today. Modified the 1949 steering wheel so that it ought to work with the '74 signal switch and horn circuit. Cut the signal switch cup off the '74 column tube, and set to weld it onto the '49 column tube. Had to go that way, as the bearing in the '74 column tube would not fit the '49 steering column shaft. I will have to make a plastic skirt for the bottom of the '49 steering wheel to line up with the signal switch cup, so it looks right esthetically. A ring cut off a PVC drainpipe tee might do the trick.

And I spent 6 hours getting that little bit done.

Unfortunately for us today, The Founders took a lot of liberties with what would be considered common knowledge when our founding documents were written. Another is the accepted meaning at the time of 'natural-born citizen'. They didn't envision us ending up having a government run by never-too-old lawyers who rarely willingly leave office.

No, not nearly. I wanted the upper part of the '74 column jacket so I could have the turn signal switch and shift quadrant for the automatic. The '49 steering wheel will be bolted to the shaft from whence it came, and turn the original steering gear, just like before.

That word "UNLESS" is the key here. UNLESS has just been DECLARED, and the matter will no longer admit delay.

Abbot, Paxton, and TEXAS are on solid ground here, the evidence is the Invasion itself. MILLIONS of invaders makes it an INVASION, Q.E.D.

279 DB. U.S. Constitution says Fuck All about any "National Guard".

The Governor has just declared an Invastion, the state of "UNLESS" now exists, and the State of Texas shall excerise it's POWERS (not rights*), to employ ANY AND ALL MEANS OF WAGING WAR AT ITS' DISPOSAL to REPEL said Invasion. And will be within it's Constitutional Boundaries to do so.

Your Section 8 cite was completely off the mark, inaccurate to the application and legally irrelevant, withal. My citation of Section 10 was deal in the Bullseye, in clear English, and provides for no wiggle room or equivocation as to what a Governor may or may not do in response. Note, there is NO LIMITATION written, as to what a Governor "may not do" to repel such an invasion.

* (all through the U.S. Constitution, ONLY the Citizens have RIGHTS. Governments have ONLY "powers" and there is not one word or phrase in the entire document which endows the Government with any "Rights", whatsoever.

And those "powers" of the Governments, are GRANTED only by the Consent of the Governed. And, are SUBJECT to change or further LIMITATION, by the WILL of the Governed.)

312 At this point, at all levels of government, was have rule by revenge. They're still going after Trump for just talking about the things Joe Biden has done and now he wants revenge. Paxton has all but stated he's after revenge. Some R's in Congress are looking for revenge against the two-tiered justice/censorship state. Schumer and lying Dems against the conservative Court, each of the parties of the first part harboring practically hatred for the party of the second part and vice-versa, with I'm sure revenge bringing a certain schadenfreude to both sides. Look at the revenge that NM scrunt of a governor is engendering by her blatantly unconstitutional decrees. Rule By Decree seems to be the cool thing these days, thanks to COVID-1984.

But government based upon rule by decree and revenge is not going to work out for us short-term. Long-term, who knows? Depends on who's doing the decreeing and the revenging, I guess. But that we're at this point is a Shakespearean tragedy of historical proportions.

Well, my mother wants it published. That was the proper way to do it in her day. I just got to doing that.

A single paragraph was going to run $400+. For one day. Knocking it down to one sentence, $300.

Fuck that. Daddy would be, well. He wouldn't do that.

I was tasked with writing the obituary for my father. I asked about publishing it in the paper. “$500”, the funeral director said. “Fuck that” I muttered to myself. Dad would have approved.

Yes she can!

We're at a fork in the road all right, and I say we can't take the wrong way. We just can't. I can't stand to think of the thousand years of intellectual, moral, and lifestyle retreat the world will take with the West giving in to socialist folly, China taking the world down with it as it shrinks to an unproductive ghost country with a surplus of males, and Africa and the Middle East spewing destructive barbarians into great cities built by people so imaginative and industrious and faithful that no one knows them any more than today's Greeks and Egyptians know the people who built the Acropolis and the pyramids.

That's incredibly well-said. Very thought-provoking. All great empires fall when they let the barbarians in the gates. And barbarians in the Roman sense, foreign. There is a certain confluence of past and present what with who Rome considered barbarians had no idea about baths. Same goes for us today. How many stories of basic plumbing getting fucked up because our turd world 'immigrants' have never seen or, worse, never properly used a toilet?

No. And as for this “invasion” declaration? I’ll believe it when I see it.

He had a border barrier put up - about 12 miles from the border. NG personnel there have been seen helping people illegally cross the border. And busing them to blue cities? Chicken bleep. Send them BACK.

Let’s be a serious country.

I was just explaining to a bewildered Japanese acquaintance why people who fly to the US from other countries have to go through Border Control while millions can stroll across the border illegally. I told her the Democrats don't want anyone who can afford to fly here and who won't get kicked off the plane for shitting in the aisle.

Yogi said a lot of crazy shit, but there was always a logic to it. The fork in the road quote. He was giving directions to somebody, Joe Garagiola the legend says, to his house.

He lived on some sort of circle. There was fork in the road to get there. Either one would get you to Yogi's house.

Another Yogi-ism that makes complete sense!

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at September 21, 2023 03:25 AM (42oo1)

343
Sam Goldwyn, the "G" in MGM, also said a lot of similar Crazy Shit. You could say Yogi was the Sam Goldwyn of baseball, or that Sam was the Yogi Berra of Hollywood.

Some Goldwynisms:

"A verbal contract ain't worth the paper it's written on." "Anybody who'd go to a psychiatrist ought to have his head examined". "Nobody should write their autobiography until after they're dead." "Our comedies are not to be laughed at!"

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 21, 2023 03:29 AM (Mzdiz)

Dorothy Parker also had some interesting interactions with Sam Goldwyn. Look that up, it's a hoot.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 21, 2023 03:31 AM (Mzdiz)

345
And perhaps the greatest Goldwynism: "Spare no expense to save money!"

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 21, 2023 03:32 AM (Mzdiz)

346
My favorite Yogi-ism: Someone asked Yogi, "Hey, Yogi, what time is it?"

Yogi replied, "You mean right now?"

Yogi was no astrophysicists, no Time Lord. He did not know the nuances of the Significance of the Passage of Time. However, he intuited it.

Indeed, "you mean right now?' is a most relevant question. If you want to know what time it is, right now, well that takes time to define precisely. Depends on what you mean by "what time is it".

Interesting phrase from the current press release regarding the new German 400 million euro package. There they have again announced the delivery of 50 Unmanned surface vessels.

The wording of the sentence suggests that these are not surveillance drones but drones for attacks.
