THE MORNING RANT: It’s Shutdown Theater Time Again! Let’s Look at What Government Spending Will NOT Be Cut

Because the federal government is about to run out of money again, we are about to have another round of government-shutdown theater, and if Congress does not appropriate more borrowed money, then “non-essential” government services will be suspended until this “crisis” is resolved.

And how will the crisis be resolved? By Republicans capitulating to more spending, without any cuts, as is the tradition.

White House Asks Congress for Short Term Funding.JPG

Here is CNBC’s reporting on the next edition of Shutdown Theater:

A spokesperson with the U.S. Office of Management and Budget said a short-term continuing resolution will be needed in the next month, keeping government funding at its current levels while negotiations continue over longer-term appropriations bills.

“…keeping government funding at its current levels…” Well, of course.

Funding for the federal government is set to run out on Sept. 30 unless action is taken by Congress.

Deep divisions remain between the parties with Republicans looking to implement large spending cuts unlikely to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Forcing the Democrats to capitulate on spending cuts rather than having the Republicans capitulate on deficit spending would be a new twist. But the truth is, most Republicans are not ”looking to implement large spending cuts.” That is posturing for the voters back home, and is part of their “budget hawk” charade.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden requested a stopgap measure to cover standard government programs and an additional $40 billion — $24 billion for Ukraine and other foreign policy challenges, nearly $4 billion for border and migration issues and $12 billion for disaster relief to boost the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

And there it is, we have to channel another $24 billion through Ukraine, and we must also continue to fund ”other foreign policy challenges.”

Regarding that ”$4 billion for border and migration issues,” do you remember when all the “budget hawks” in both parties were adamant that there was not $5 billion to fund Trump’s border wall, but now that Joe Biden has thrown the border open we are going to spend another $4 billion, on top of all that has already been spent, dealing with the domestic humanitarian crisis his policies have unleashed.

But let’s circle back to the ”other foreign policy challenges” that require additional emergency deficit spending to avoid a government shutdown.

Oilfield Rando (@Oilfield_Rando) does a fantastic job highlighting wasteful government spending at his randoland.us (@RandoLand_us) website. He goes straight to the source, www.usaspending.gov, to get this information. The comical descriptions of how your tax money is being squandered are not his, they are direct quotes from the government’s website. Here are just a few of the ridiculous ways your State Department is financing “foreign policy challenges”:

The budget hawks in Congress have the Constitutional authority not to fund “gender discrepencies in the energy sector labor force in high emitting countries with significant gender gaps.” But they won’t withhold funding, because they are frauds who actually support using US tax dollars and deficit spending in this manner.

Here are a couple more appropriations for “foreign policy challenges” that were highlighted by Mr. Rando, with embedded links to the federal government’s spending website:

In 2022, the Department of State awarded $499,827 to NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY to ENABLE GENDER PARITY FOR FEMALE ENVIRONMENTALISTS IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND TO BUILD A PAKISTANI WOMEN UNIVERSITY CLIMATE CHANGE CONSORTIUM WHICH WILL DEVELOP PAKISTANI CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO AND MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE

In 2023, the Department of State awarded $39,984 to DIPLO US to FOSTER A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AND THEIR POLICY IMPLICATIONS IN HUMAN AND GENDER RIGHTS, EQUITY, EQUALITY, AND INCLUSIVITY.

Examples like these go on and on and on and on….

It’s obviously not just the State Department…here is an example of how the federal government spends money on “education”:

In 2023, the Department of Education awarded $572,126 to SISTEMA UNIVERSITARIO ANA G. MENDEZ, INCORPORADO for PROYECTO ABRAZO: EMBRACING DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND A SENSE OF BELONGING THROUGH ACADEMIC, REAL-LIFE SKILLS AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT

Don’t forget, the inflation nightmare that we are going through was precipitated by government deficit spending. As your paycheck’s purchasing power erodes each month due to inflation, you can take solace in knowing that North Carolina State University is repurposing your lost purchasing power to build a Pakistani women’s climate change consortium.

Can cutting these ridiculous appropriations alone fix the budget deficit? Of course not. But there will never be support for making more painful cuts if our government continues to fund absolute nonsense, especially when we are facing a “government shutdown” because the government has run out of money.

Oilfield Rando is a roughneck whose hobby is investigating government spending, and also making us laugh at the woke ruling class. He does better investigative work on wasteful spending than I can find from full-time writers at traditional conservative publications. Yes there will be graft. Perhaps a lot. But at least you have something at the end, unlike now.

Better to be maseively in debt with a huge industrial base than massively in debt with nothing.

NB: I know no one agrees, but US gov debt is not same same as an individual's debt.

It made sense, but experience over the last 40+ years tells me the debt bomb is not gonna explode. I can’t point to any economic principles to explain why we’ve been able to get away with defying economic gravity for so many years, but we’re just hanging above the canyon in midair like Wile E. Coyote. I suspect we’ve been getting away with it because the US economy is still the most productive in the world and the dollar remains the worlds reserve currency. Honestly I don’t worry about the debt anymore…. I’d just like it to be spent on different things….. I’d greatly reduce that DoD budget, stop the Ukraine funding…. And of course cut off all $$ to FIB CIA DOJ… Hey, maybe I am a budget hawk!

But what it shows, is that the final fall-back will be "I did everything out of Patriotism and for the US!"

This is patently absurd. But! But, it remains to be seen if Biden et al had their crimes officially blessed by the relevant Institutions.

I think they did. It would have been trivially easy to do. I think there are documents authorizing everything the Bidens did in the name of National Security.

And if no docs, ppl will swear that they approved everything and it was all "legit".

Since we're only doing CRs now, just fund the things you want and with hold funding from those you do not want. Then base the next CR on delivery. No delivery or slow walking the deliverable gets you no funding or significantly reduced funding.

Yes. I'm a hard-right Modern Monetary Theory guy. It's ideologically neutral. It explains it to a large extent.

Post 1971, the US became an exporter of USDs. This was because our subs could decap strike most of the world. This enabled us to force project from Carriers. This enabled us to secure the sea lanes. That enabled us to require USD use. We told Saud "you can get glassed or allow only USD use". They said ok we use USD.

That sub threat appears gone. Hence, BRICS expansion.

We're fucked in the med term absent some new outside-the-box Kissinger "petro"-dollar (submarine dollar).

202 ah budget debates. Of course there is 100 billion or so of complete BS that 99% would agree should be cut. But inevitably fed employees think *their* department actually does valuable work and maybe could shed a few percent from the HR staff but no way should be eliminated.

Intertubes tells me federal employee is 'only' about 2.5 million outside of military while state and local government employees are 19 million. That gives pause but of course with most cities even the trash service is all government employees, and teachers, police, fire department.

and I suspect that the people whose jobs are funded by the feds although they aint "federal employees" is at least twice that 2.5 million #. My own job falls into that category. And yes I think at least my subgroup provides service that is worth our funding cost

At some point we will collapse just as the Roman empire did but I have no idea if that point is a few years out or many decades.

I may have made a mistake. There was an old National Lampoon story and cartoon about a kid with an STD standing in front of a urinal and spraying everywhere, to the horror of the kid at the next urinal. I googled it, without luck, but now I'm expecting a call from the CDC.

252 Excellent rant.

Saved an article from almost 15 years ago (published November 14, 2008, by the Inquirer) entitled, 'A right-wing look at Obama agenda through Easter.'

It begins, "Every new president tries to emulate Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous "100 Days" strategy of 1933 with a blitz of new initiatives. But Barack Obama is so special that he'll need only 83 days.

Based on in-depth research on right-wing Web sites, here's Obama's agenda from Inauguration Day to Easter:" (Only a sample, below.)

Jan 26: Bill Ayer's Medal of Freedom ceremony.
Jan 30: Redistribute wealth.
Feb 1: Hugo Chavez at Camp David.
Feb 3: Repeat Second Amendment
Mar 19: National oil companies
Mar 25: Legalize gay marriage
Mar 26: Legalize transgender marriage
Mar 29: Create National Leftist Militia
April 12: Cancel Easter

It's still online in its entirety.

Also an article, Thursday, January 29, 2009, "House passes $819B economic stimulus" People were "shook" by the "outrageous" amount of funding.

If some are to be believed, they don't just dance around nekkid. They engage in acts of depravity, designed to seal the pact between Gopes and their oligarchs.

I guess they should get some credit, as far as I know they don't bring in children, like the Democrats do.

Well, I mean - maybe it will get built, maybe it won't. But a large chunk of the money at minimum IS going to woketards at various universities.

It's simply a new priesthood. And like just about every priesthood, especially goverment-backed ones, it's just a vehicle for sucking up money and power.

'$4 billion for border and migration issues,”
' do you remember when all the “budget hawks” in both parties were adamant that there was not $5 billion to fund Trump’s border wall, but now that Joe Biden has thrown the border open we are going to spend another $4 billion, on top of all that has already been spent, dealing with the domestic humanitarian crisis his policies have unleashed."

And how much do you want to bet that most of that $4 billion will go to Blue mayors and governors squawking about migrants being sent to their cities and states?
