This Is Actually Great

The Mystery of the Bloomfield Bridge

This pedestrian bridge crosses I-494 just west of the Minneapolis Airport. It connects Bloomington to Richfield. I drive under it often and I wondered: why is it there? It's not in an area that is particularly walkable, and it doesn't connect any establishments that obviously need to be connected. So why was it built?
I often have curious thoughts like this, but I dismiss most of them because if I answered all of them I would get nothing else done. But one day I was walking out of a Taco Bell and found myself at the base of the bridge.
That only raised MORE questions! Why did the bridge just lead to some grass? Why isn't there a sidewalk? What is the point? It makes no sense!
Obviously I had to walk across it to see where it went. I found that it connects that Taco Bell... to a Grainger.

I found this to be a thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable read, as this guy spends months trying to solve the mystery of Chesterton's Bridge. I wish he were training political reporters.

You Will Apologize For Existing

We are all criminals? I don't think so...

The Stearns County Human Services Department recently required all of its employees to attend a training on how they are “all criminals.”

The training was mandatory, according to internal emails obtained by Alpha News, and employees who were unable to attend were provided a recording.
“This training is mandatory for all staff, however, if you are unable to attend the in-person training, we will have a recording available for later viewing. Nevertheless, I encourage you to attend in person as it is a very powerful training (and it’s always fun to connect with your co-workers about all of us being criminals)!” Human Services Administrator Melissa Huberty wrote in an email to staff in the department.
The Aug. 14 training was called “We Are All Criminals” and was put on by a nonprofit of the same name.

The group wants to help criminals get a second chance, easing their way back into the working world. Nothing wrong with that. But being leftists, of course, they can't do that by encouraging them to take responsibility for their action and repent, no, they have to stigmatize everyone else for the “privilege”. The only difference between you and Rico “The Shark” Gionelli, who just got done serving 12 years of a 20 year sentence for putting an old man in intensive care while collecting for a loan shark, is that you weren't caught that one time you jaywalked in high school.

A Taxing Thread

The Income Tax is Chattel Slavery.

13th Amendment outlawed slavery, 16th made it universal.

The income Tax is Chattel slavery.

It is an infinite debt that can never be paid off, a debt that no amount of money can ever make you free of, and instead, you and all your descendants will eternally be having your wages garnished and all your transactions tracked and subjected to reporting requirements as if you are a parolee from a debtors prison, you have no right to avoid self-incrimination, no right to be secure in your private papers... you MUST report and it must be accurate and volunteer information on any crime you may have committed if you gained a single dollar via it.

You are not free, your children are not free, and you have none of the rights any of the founders would have considered the basis of being a free man... you are a chattel slave and as chattel so are your children.

She's not shy about making her case, and frankly, I see where she's coming from.

Amusing History

Ships of Note: PC-815

It chased a known magnetic anomaly.

Sounds suspicious. I’m guessing it was quickly defeated?

After a fierce battle lasting 68 hours, during which PC-815 dropped a mere 37 depth charges and called in reinforcement from two airships and four other surface vessels, the dangerous anomaly was declared neutralised. Its commander claimed one definite kill and one probable.

Like making stuff up, did he?

The commander was one L. Ron Hubbard. Yes, that one.

Believe it or not, there's more.

I'm Surprised They Didn't Call In Geraldo Rivera For The Reveal

A muddy reveal for mysterious West Point time capsule from 1820s

Staff and students at West Point, the famed US military academy, gathered on Monday for what was supposed to be a historic moment: the opening of a mysterious 1820s time capsule, discovered months ago at the base of a campus monument.

The event was live-streamed, starting with pre-recorded remarks from academy historian Jennifer Voigtschild, inviting the audience to "literally uncover a piece of West Point history". Cadets were filmed offering their own predictions for what was inside the nearly 200-year-old lead box: an American flag, boots, or maybe a class ring.

Read to find out the rest. So maybe it wasn't a time capsule. What was it then? We need to get the bridge guy on this mystery, stat!

I made a corn pie for supper tonight. Nope, not a euphanism. Fill a proper pie shell (lard crust of course) with butter, fresh corn stripped from the cob and add a bit of milk, butter, S&P, and you can cut up a few hard boiled eggs into it. Oh, did I mention mo butter? Put a lid on it and bake it hot for 10 minutes and then back off the heat for 25 minutes more. Delicious!

89 The thing in the pedestrian bridge eventually boils down to the fact that the building of freeways severed previously cohesive neighborhoods. Go through major cities and you will find pedestrian bridges that were built in the hopes of ameliorating that issue. Go down I-27 in Lubbock and you’ll see one. I-10 in San Antonio and Houston has a few. I-35 on the south side of San Antonio has one, and so on.

I am holding in my little hands what appears to a genuine Patek-Phillipe ladies watch. It was discovered this afternoon in my aunt's jewelry box, which my mother got after she died in 2008. It hasn't been looked at since until today.

Also, in that jewelry box, Miley found a odd style of bracelet, the exact same one, she bought in '76 and lost (or was stolen) in the '80s. It was the exact same type of odd (looking to me) bracelet.

I'm trying to identify this watch.

104 One interesting part of the bridge thing - so the government built it to meet the reasonable needs of a group of people impacted by a federal initiative. Fine.

If I understand the subtext of the story - sixty years later the government still maintains it even though usage is low and the people living in the area mostly want it gone.

And likely in another 100 years usage will be lower and still it will be maintained...

110 It is hard to disagree with the libertarian maxim that taxes are theft.

Yes yes we need to spend some amount of money through a government and yes it has to be taken somehow.

But *most* of our tax dollars are spent enriching politicians and their allies and the government intentionally targets taxes at disfavored groups.

If there is ever an America 2.0 there should only be two avenues for taxes

1) Import duties
2) Per capita flat (not rate, but absolutely flat) taxes. Every adult pays the same amount.

I did not know this was a Patek-Phillipe until I looked at the tiny print with glasses on. It appeared to be a "locket" style and my mother wanted me try to open it.

I was a bit, well, unconcerned, until I realized it was a Patek-Phillipe, then got skeered of touching it.

I figured it out. No "locket". The front crystal is hinged, and the back is hinged as well. On the back side inside is all the numbers. Two numbers are hand etched into the gold. The others are stamped.

There is a little button on the side to set the watch hands. The stem doesn't pull out. Press that little button and the stem adjusts the hands. Release, and it winds. Took me a bit to figure that out.

I probably wouldn't have messed with it in the slightest had I known it was a Patek-Phillipe.

Here's the thing. If you like the watch and you will wear it, then keep it, no matter what its potential value. The value is what you make it to be.

If you don't care about it and would sell it, then treat it with kid gloves and get the biggest price for it.

I'm continually amazed at things like the Roadshow where a thing is given a monetary value and then they say they would never sell it. If it matters to you, that's the value. If it doesn't, then it's just money.

Property tax depends on the county. I pay about 40% of what King county (Seattle) residents pay, about 65% of what Spokane county residents pay. What we do have is a Business and occupation tax. Businesses are taxed on gross revenues. Chew on that one. We also have some of the highest employer payroll taxes. Washington is definitely not business friendly, unless you're one of the big boys, Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, Weyerhaeuser, and get some nice exemptions.

It's worth some money, that's for sure (provided it's genuine, which it appears to be), the question is how much. It's certainly not one of those million dollar ones.

Really good investigators will do this sort of thing, as will very committed lawyers who are chasing legal citations, original intent and precedents. One lady I knew had to get transcripts of the legislature committee meetings of some subcommittee to try to determine intent for some statute modification that affected some minor sub paragraph in the late 60s and if it was congruent with federal law.

Some of those records are on media that is no longer supported by any existing equipment. The Oregon State Archives actually had a person on staff looking at eBay for archaic recording equipment that matched some of the old spools they had in files.

233 My trusty Dixon mower let me down this afternoon. Tried to start it, and the engine spun over real fast on the starter; no compression. Some backfires through the carb. Stuck intake valve? Poured some oil/gas mixture into the carb. More pops, then none.

Took out the spark plug. With a small offset screwdriver through the spark plug hole, I was able to feel around in there. Found the exhaust valve, and determined it moved when the engine was turned. Determined by feel that the intake valve was wide open. Figured I got the offset screwdriver resting on the top of the valve head. Gave it a tap with the ratchet handle, and heard a "snap". Put the cleaned spark plug back in, and it cranked a while, snapping and popping, until it suddenly caught, and settled into running. Smoked out the barn REAL good. Drove it to the shop, fueled it up, made sure there was enough oil in the crankcase, and mowed for an hour. Seemed to run fine. Maybe I dodged a bullet, there.

Anyway, in his dotage, John Henry Harrison threw out the book on traditional clock making, and claimed he had created a design that would be good to 1s in 100 days.

At the time, the Big Shots said he was a fool, and had done lost his mind. His design was garbage.

250+ years later, Harrison's design there was finally realized in something called the "Burgess Clock B". Clock B was tested at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich a while back. It kept time to 5/8s in 100 days. Less that a second.

Here's to you John Harrison, the greatest clock maker of all time.

Clock B is the most accurate mechanical clock with a pendulum swinging in free air every created. 250 year old design, finally realized.

You have to caveat "pendulum swinging in free air" because of what was, until atomic clocks came around, were the most accurate clocks, master-slave (I know that's triggering) vacuum pendulum clocks.

They were good to about 1s in one year. Although recently it turns out the accuracy was an order of magnitude better. 1s in 10 years. Turns out it was sensistive to slight changes in 'g' due to solar and lunar tidal variations. They didn't know at the time, didn't have more accurate clocks to see that.

But I gurantee you, if John Harrison had know about the vacuum pendulum, he could've done better.

I'm wondering just how the hell that aunt of mine (my mother's Big Sister) came to acquire this watch. Unfortunately, anyone who might know something is long dead. Did her husband buy such a thing for her? He was the type who would've appreciated such haute horology.

But I don't know.

Funny thing with that aunt. When she died, out in Alameda, CA in 2008, where she'd lived for decades and was a School Marm out there, my mother found something going through her things.

It was a marriage certificate. My mother's jaw hung open. She did not know about that. She recognized the name of who Big Sis had married way back.

Anyway, verified the marriage was real. Apparently Big Sis had run off with someone, it didn't work out, and it was Kept Quiet. My mother had no clue. And anyone who would've known was long gone.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 01, 2023 03:03 AM (Mzdiz)

302
This aunt had man problems. After that Secret Marriage that ended lord know how, she ran off to CA with another one. She worked and put in through college out there. When he graduated, he ran off, and left her.

She was pretty sour on men and marriage after that, as I understand. She met some guy, while school-marming, who was some sort of electronics engineer type. He like my aunt. Asked her to marry him. She said no.

He told her, well, you're the only gal for me, and every year, I'm gonna ask you to marry me. And he did.

She finally broke down and said yes the year she officially retired from school-marming. They were together until he died.

Yep, he could've bought her a Patek Philippe trying t sweeten the pot, I think. He wasn't all that well off or anything, but he wasn't broke.

Speaking of pendulum clocks swinging in free air, that leads to one of the Unsolved Mysteries of (classical) Physics, the "Synchronized pendulum question".

The great astronomer Christiaan Huygens, who dabbled in Time and Horology, discovered something funny about pendulum clocks.

Huygens is the inventor of the longcase clock, or grandfather clock as we call it now. He was trying to solve the Longitude Problem. He was on the right track...

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 01, 2023 03:49 AM (Mzdiz)

306
Anyway, Huygens observed a curious phenomenon. Two of his pendulum clocks, mounted on the same beam, or support, would get synchronized after around 30 minutes or so. The pendulums would get 180 degrees out of phase, ticking right in time with each other.

This is know as "Huygens synchronization". It's a very subtle, high order coupling of mechanical systems, that was not understood. Still not completely understood, but they've figured a lot of it out:

https://tinyurl.com/yx6q74q8

Interesting thing. Two such clocks that get coupled like that get their accuracy shot to hell. Their coupled frequency is not the correct, standalone one.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at September 01, 2023 03:52 AM (Mzdiz)

307
They knew about this coupling, and had figured out the way to stop it was to make sure the two clock pendulums swung in perpendicular planes.

That master-slave vacuum pendulum clock required the two pendulums be mounted at right angles.

This is still not completely figured out.

Among the few things I have from my mother (aside from the memory of her invaluable guidance and love as I grew up) are two items from her nursing school days. One is a sturdy wool shoulder cape of the kind nurses wore in cold weather then, dark blue with a red silk (?) lining. The other is a heavy bronze desk nameplate with her name and "R.N." on it. Both are testaments to the quality of such accessories then (the 1930s): today the plate would be plastic or thin brass, and the cape would be polyester fleece made in China.
