Hello Barbie, Let's Go ONT.

Hi everyone! Welcome to Thursday night. Do you think we'll have fun on tonight's ONT?

Tonight's Feelgood Story: FAFO Edition

Living In America

The Best Small Towns Across America

I dunno about this list. The choice for Texas, Marfa, is way the heck west. It's got artsy stuff for the weekenders out from Austin, but they've been having trouble with the water table and I think it's kinda close to the routes the coyotes use for human smuggling. Ocean City for Maryland is way off base. 300,000 people stuffed into a 4.5 sq mi spit of land is not exactly “small town living”, yet that's what you get all summer long. What do you think about the choices from your state?

Tonight's Debate Question

Oregon’s Brutally Hard Lesson about Decriminalizing Drugs

Legalizing drugs. Where should the line be? I generally define my political leanings as “conservatarian”. Conservative, but with libertarian leanings. The more libertarian the solution to a problem is, the more likely it is to be the correct one. Doesn't mean it's the right one, but I think that generally speaking solutions with less government involvement are better than the opposite. So, legalize drugs then, right? Problem solved.

Not so fast.

The libertarian argument that resonates the most with me is “Hey, drugs were basically legal for the first 150 years of America, and caused far fewer problems that the war of drugs does for us now” (CatGirl Kulak makes this argument here) . And I'll concede the argument, but there are a few big problems with the it:

#1. The moral character of the country in the 19th century was vastly different than the moral character of the country today. A work hard, seize opportunity, delayed gratification, personal responsibility society based upon Judaeo-Christian principles is very different from a me first, instant gratification, I deserve anything I want because I want it society whose “moral” foundations are hedonistic. The two will react to the availability of drugs in vastly different ways.

#2. Social services. In the past they were provided by private, voluntary organizations. There was no 911, no Narcan, no ambulance ride to a million dollars worth of medial machinery to keep you alive, all of it funded by the government from the pockets of the productive citizens to the benefit of the non-productive ones. Sure you could buy laudanum from the pharmacist, but if you OD in an alley or checked out of life and wasted away, well, you did, that's all. Legalizing drugs with that level of safety net in place is an invitation for people to abuse it.

#3. Drug strength. As I said, you could but laudanum easily. But nobody was selling fentanyl. Smoking pot with a natural THC level of 5-8% is a far cry from the 40-50% that we have today. LSD wasn't invented until the 1940. Meth goes back to the very end of the 19th century, but it wasn't widely used recreationally until much later. We're not talking about the same drugs.

So what are your thoughts on this? Where's the line?

Musical Interlude

Please understand that I am in no way being critical of these people and their song ministry. They are lifting up their voices to the Lord, and more power to them if their brand of Christian pop reaches people. Personally, however, I just don't enjoy Christian pop. Church music should sound like Bach, not ZZ Top.

Related: Read. The. Room. I have no idea who this woman is, but addressing the prayer meeting by saying “I was so eager to get here that I didn't even stop to bang my boyfriend this morning” is being tone deaf on an impressive scale.

Pedo Pete

The Biden Family Caricatures

Women as diverse as former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Biden’s own daughter-in-law Kathleen Buhle, have both alleged in their memoirs that Biden made them feel uncomfortable through his intrusive touching and embraces.

On several occasions, Biden developed a strange tic of becoming too physical with young girls. He habitually attempted to hug them while blowing in their hair.

His daughter Ashley wrote in her diary that she feared her past adolescent showers with her father had been inappropriate. Even as president, Biden has weirdly called out young girls in his audiences to note their attractiveness.

On one occasion, the president interrupted his speech to address a female acquaintance—enlightening the crowd that, “We go back a long way. She was 12 and I was 30, but anyway…”

As a result, Biden has likely been warned repeatedly to forgo intimate references to young women.

He has no doubt also been advised by his handlers to stop all close, supposedly innocent contact with young girls and children—if for no other reason than to prevent his political opponents from charging that Joe is “creepy,” “perverse,” or “sick.”

And yet like some addict, Biden cannot stop—regardless of the eerie image he projects around the world.

On the best small town list, VA's was Middleburg. A rich enclave in Hunt Country. Just the description of the boutique shops and and fancy restaurants and spas means that it's more like small town Martha's Vineyard than small town Middle America.

Now on the worst things about states list, VA is 'Con: You're getting a bit too close to those rich men north of Richmond.'

Middleburg is full of those rich men just north of Richmond.

71 Drug strength

The problem with using “but today’s drugs are stronger” is that the reason they’re stronger is the war on drugs. Heroin was an obscure medicine until opium became illegal. Crack was a direct result of cracking down on cocaine. The needs of smugglers are very different from the desires of consumers and lead to more concentrated product that take less space to traffic.

I don’t know whether the meth problem or the fentanyl problem can be put back in the bag by relegalizing more benign drugs. But I can be pretty sure that if we keep everything illegal, in another thirty years the new scourge will be even worse, drug warriors will continue using that as an excuse to continue propping up drug traffickers.

95 Marfa, Texas mentioned by Weird Dave is world famous for its legendary ghost lights, which have been making appearances there for centuries, way before the advent of automobiles and electricity.

In fact, it is the most well known Ghost Light site in the country, though there are many other locations with Spooklights such as Gurdon, Arkansas; Paulding, MI; Raynham, MA (right in the heart of the Bridgewater Triangle), Brown Mountain, NC; Oxford, OH; Bragg, TX; Joplin, MO; Bucks County, PA...

Ocracoke is definitely small and fairly isolated (except for those summer tourists like myself). But then summer tourists pay the winter's bills.

103 Texas not to long ago decided the way to go after prostitution was to focus on demand rather than supply, making being a john a state jail felony. I favor the same approach to the drug war: imprison users, strip them of their rights. See what that does. I can't agree to a "libertarian" approach because in today's America that really means a socialist approach: taxpayers pay for all the externalities. Social services, child welfare, crime. No thanks.

105 So you're a state government bureaucrat sitting in Honolulu with operational control over Hawaii's water supply, and you get a call from the West Maui Land Company, which runs the water districts in West Maui, saying:

"There was a fire near Lahaina that has been put out, and we'd like to draw extra water from a local stream to refill the water tanks, since the fire department drained our water tanks fighting the fire."

Do you say:

"Absolutely! Take as much water as you need, and let me know when you've successfully refilled the water tanks!"

Or do you say:

"Gee, I don't know - you need to check with the farmer who also uses the stream to make sure he's OK with the extra water diversion, and you need to confirm with the Maui fire department that they need the water tanks refilled."

You then finally give permission to take the extra water from the stream five hours later, after the fire has restarted.

As bad as you think your state government is, Hawaii's is worse.

Legalize all drugs for adults
Ban all social welfare programs for people on drugs

You'd see large number of dead junkies. Potentially enough to persuade some people of the dangers. But there is no way to reduce, let alone get rid of, social programs in Soviet America.

So then how to you handle a world when non drug addicts will be forced to pay to keep junkies in physical comfort and with enough money to get more drugs?

Counterpoint on Christian music: Christian pop (and rock, etc.) isn't the same as ecumenical or liturgical music. I agree that the latter should sound like Bach, or John Owen, or John Ashcroft, or something you'd find in a hymnal.

I have several beefs with "Contemporary Christian" music, but none are related to genre. Mainly that almost anyone who makes it to the top has done it the same way as all the popular secular artists have, right down to the obligatory and ubiquitous one-eye photos which signify elite Club membership.

I grew up with CCM, went to the concerts, attended the festivals, bought all the cassettes and t shirts. After Amy Grant went secular, Stryper did too, Hillsong became a scandal, ASCAP became a racket, I'm done with all of it. Petra stayed true, I suppose.

But honestly, none of the artists even approached the quality of Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top. Not even Phil Keaggy.

The male host makes the observation...what is the point of even doing science if you aren't trying to discover the truth? Why don't you just go write a fiction novel instead? Professional forest fire fighters from a nearby California Division of Forestry station told the Oakland fire department that they needed to keep an overnight watch on the fire location, and keep playing water on it, even though it seemed out.

The Oakland fire department said: "Shut up, we know what we're doing", and removed their equipment overnight.

another reason I go out of the EMT field when I left the Army. Land survey is far less scary.

You know, except it's usually a land surveyor who finds a body in a culvert.

In my field days I ran across tweakers who were passed out. Did not want to find a corpse.

No there's no easy way to enforce it and yes I like certain addictions myself, and yes alcohol is legal and trying to make it illegal was a giant facepalm, and yes the War on Drugs like every other government boondoggle has been a miserable failure.

And I also agree that other things have the capacity to be a addictive - (relatedly, I also think programming Dopamine Websites like TikTok, FB and Twitter that treat users only like lab rats should be illegal for similar reasons) and we can't enforce *everything*.

BUT as a society we have to try. We have to try to keep people on some kind of balance between entertained, medicated and hard working. The bottom line is the country's gone and it little matters. However I do think the wide availability and legalization of certain substances is contributing somewhat to our recent terrors.

I've been gobsmacked over the new narrative about vitamin D ever since it was discovered that D deficiency was a big factor in catching or getting seriously ill from Covid. Soon after that, all the "immune support" supplements removed it from their formulas and the word went out to doctors to discourage patients from taking D supplements because patients could hurt themselves. This is despite the nearly universal serious deficiencies in the population. We've got kids developing rickets, for goodness sake! The official guidance is to avoid all sun exposure and not take any supplements.

Meanwhile, vitamin D studies show that it is helpful for fighting viruses, avoiding cancer, supporting mood and mental function, avoiding diabetes, and a bunch of other benefits I can't recall right now.

Crazy.

260 Ok, I have to inform you that "The Way International" is/was a cult that peaked in the 1980s. The main presence was in Arizona and my hometown, Emporia, Kansas (where they purchased an Presbyterian college that had just went bankrupt), though it appears now they are mainly active in Ohio. They were led by a charismatic leader, Victor Paul Wierwille.

I could go on in one about their somewhat interesting beliefs, or the utter commitment of their generally genial followers (though I will note, 8th grade me, crossing the street between buildings for classes as a kid really liked it when college-aged Way College coeds will chat me up in a flirtations manner and try to get me to attend their musical program that evening (never followed through, though some were stunners and a few of those students were professional models working out of NYC for designer clothing lines).

All of the students at the "Way College" were physically fit (it was required, for "the body is a temple" was a belief that was not questioned, and so the students were always jogging.

After Wierwile died, the ministry declined sharply (as it does with most cults), and they had to give up many of their properties.

Second, read my first comment here about the subject. I'm not saying you have to execute everyone who commits a crime under narcotic influence but they need to be legally punished harshly for their choices and the actions they lead to.

Yeh, we're farther away from that world (faith, family, law & order) than ever before. And there lies the source of society's ills.

I have a lot to say on this, but I was eating lunch.

There is one very big difference Poly, the "war on drugs" has been perverted into a way to charge criminals for mere possession when they are caught with property or violent crimes. It is also a cash cow for local lawyers for kids caught with a joint in the car.

I hold that that is the main problem with the WOD. Possession of small quantities is doing no harm -- keep the laws against public intoxication, increase vagrancy laws to make that a crime (with drug testing) and eliminate all social services for a number of years if any drugs found in a person's system.

320 The drug thing is weird, because it falls under the "potential" crimes thing.

If I shoot someone, that's an actual crime and should be prosecuted.

If I drive 75 in a 65 zone, that's still a crime, but it's a potential thing, since I've done nothing physically a crime. I haven't run anyone over or crashed into another car, but I get a ticket because I MIGHT have done so.

I think it's kind of the same with drugs. I might smoke weed and back my truck over some homeless person....hang on, that should merit a medal, but it's still considered a crime--or I might smoke week and do nothing harmful at all.

But if I'm caught smoking weed, I get charged with a crime.

PS: I've never smoked weed. Drugs scare me.

PSS: I've been drinking too much...which is essentially smoking weed!

It's just odd that there are laws about actual crimes (murder) and potential crimes (speeding).

I'm sure they're all there to keep us under various heels.

332 On our numerous road trips when our sons were kids we saw towns that nobody has ever heard of, but are beautiful.

America is a wondrous nation. And, I will say this: the movie Red Dawn. Imagine that times 10,000. America has a shit-ton of places like that. Except for that the cast had access to blow-combs and showers and razors, and clean clothes.

Other than that, we'll be like wolverines and stuff!!

Man, I would love a shave right now.

The Way was recruiting on my college campus. I checked it out to see what they had to say for themselves. They torture a lot of Greek to get the Bible to say what they want. It was interesting to see them make their case -- I had only had two years of Greek, but they had only had two weeks. Their basic heresy is that Jesus is not God the Son.

To give your point a proper legal explanation: "The distinction between malum in se and malum prohibitum offenses is best characterized as follows: a malum in se offense is "naturally evil as adjudged by the sense of a civilized community," whereas a malum prohibitum offense is wrong only because a statute makes it so."

349 Well the other thing to remember about "possession" is it's the way that many of the worst thugs and criminals - people who destroy neighborhoods - are gotten.

They don't get caught raping, murdering or stealing, the cops knows who they are and can't or don't do shit, but they *do* get caught with drugs, and then they go away.

It's not a fantastic justification but it's a hard truth of our world. These criminals *ruin* lives by the millions. My thoughts on this are ever-shifting and I am less in favor of the "system" than I used to be, but still I retain a soft spot for this and cannot help it. "All poor innocent Johnny did was have a few crack rocks in his possession". No... poor innocent Johnny was a known criminal lowlife thug who had a few crack rocks in his possession.

Like I said, it's like getting Capone on tax evasion. Is it "right"? I don't fucking know, probably not, I just hate these asshole violent criminal shitfucks. If I had the power, I would do a lot worse than "get them" on possession, so I'm probably not the one to ask.

357 Americans reject, and hate, responsibility. This is one reason why government has gotten as big as it has (and why Americans constantly dream up more and more and more things for government to do - have you seen what people expect schools to do now? Never mind that they suck at what we expect them to do now, but I digress...). This is ultimately why I don't like the idea of legalizing drugs. (I eagerly look forward to being screamed at by "libertarians" about what a big Statist I am.) You are right - with the degradation of civil society in America (government is at all out war with civil society, do not kid yourselves) and the rejection of responsibility in society, this is what you get left with. Before people start citing alcohol to me, please note that it is highly regulated. I cannot just open a can of beer and drink wherever I want in public. Tell China and Mexico that there is a drug emergency, and hencforth all cargo will be searched at border. Shut them down. They will crack down on their drug and precursor industry in a heartbeat.

We could add drug charges to carriers and owners of trucks and ships caught (with death penalty) and that outlawing Narcan idea above is cracking good.

No anonymity. I hate that aspect. Teaching in a small town over the past year taught me this.

The way I corrected this (and it is quite easy as there is little to do there) is to conduct as much business as possible out of town. To prevent a store visit from turning into an impromptu parent-teacher or coach-teacher conference, I decided to buy groceries, etc in a neighboring county. And if I ran into anyone from the school there, I just went further out.

At graduation, which I had to attend, the whole town turned out, and the only thing I could think of was a poem by a world renowned Canadian poet and percussionist called "Limelight".

And if and when the left gets its fully socialist system this will be the fate of the FSA...

I've only noticed it being taken out of immune support stuff, not regular multivitamins. It’s called “the web” and I’m pretty sure it’s being used. The web page showed all the good seats as taken! And then they went to theater and only like three people showed up. Clearly something wrong with their system.

425 Wildfire smoke settling in to western Washington again tonight. We have a couple burning right now.

I went to the beach earlier and saw a seagull dying in the sand. It wasn't bloody or mangled. But it looked sad. And tired. I wanted to walk up and comfort it, but thought better and just stood there. And I said a prayer.

On my way back, it looked more tired, the tip of its beak touching the sand and its eyes mostly closed. It was a beautiful bird, Snow White and grey. I said another prayer and wished it well.

But a fun story about Taos: Julia Robert's lived there for a time, and she was not much appreciated. One time she was in a store and at checkout, she claimed she forgot her wallet but she would take her stuff home and she'd be back. The cashier said no. ----

Sometimes people face situations where all the choices are bad. In those situations it is a guarantee that critics will point out that someone made a bad choice. Well, of course they did, because there was not a good choice available.

I feel that way about drugs. Legalization is a bad choice. Criminalization is also a bad choice. Which one is worse? Most likely that depends on a number of things that will change with the passage of time.

However, for now, I think criminalization is the worst choice of the bad choices, but that in now way makes me think that the other choice will ever become a good one.

505 I made good progress on the gin pole setup for my pickup today. The boom, essentially an A-frame with a pulley at the apex, is mostly built, and set into the trunnions I welded to the rails of the headache rack. Nothing will be welded or bolted to the truck box itself. I made the A-frame from 1 1/2" by 3/16" steel angle stock, and it seemed a little wimpy, so I am welding on a second run of angle to each leg to make it a box beam. I plan to use a cable comealong to raise/lower the A-frame, and my electric car trailer winch, with the line going over the pulley, to raise/lower the load.

The simple truth is that there are those with addictive personalities, who cannot avoid indulging, and cannot be trusted to not poison themselves, over and over and over.

I guess it depends on how many dead people you want to know, in the long run.

Next dose, a "2", third dose, a "3". Ain't no fourth dose. If patient's palm is obscured so that presence of absence of tattoos can't be determined, assume it reads "3".

I have never read of a WWII B-24 pilot who actually reported enjoying the flying qualities of the airplane, nor being much in love with it as a machine with which they bonded.

Rather, they universally reported it as akin to flying an ill mannered dump truck, with few redeeming qualities other than payload and range.

The B-17 garnered MUCH love from those who flew it. Won't repeat it here, the histories are replete with it's praises.

But no WWII aircraft has been MORE converted to Flying Winnebago status than the PBY-5A Catalina.

Back then, the Army Air Corps called those "misses". Only in the mid 2010s, did they fess up and admit that those were TARGETED, as to deny the Krauts of workers in their munitions factories.

A B-29 carrying "Little Man" might've attained the 40,000 ft. necessary to avoid the flak. Carrying "Fat Man" would've been a suicide mission, the 88 mm Flak would've taken it out easily, much less the later marque FW-190s.

But ONE such mission over Schweinfurt might've taken a year or more off of the war.

576 A bit late, but worth noting for posterity: my stance on drugs is basically that the government is a) inept and b) capricious, and therefore cannot be trusted to actually do anything about drugs even if restricting them was some sort of public good. It is failure theater that only punishes otherwise honest citizens while the real bad guys do whatever they want, whenever they want. And that's all before getting into the massive, gilded, glorious cathedral to drug culture that boomer culture built, whose shadow all us young'uns live under.

578 I only mentioned the B-24 because I know a little about them.

My uncle was killed when his Liberator was shot down over occupied France.

My grandfather's B-17 was shot down over occupied France. He dodged the Nazis with the French underground for about 6 months before advancing allied forces after D-day freed him. My mother is named after the little French girl who protected him, wheeling her bicycle slowly along the roads and keeping watch for Germans as he scurried along the ditch beside the road, going from one safehouse to another.

Two members of the crew were killed; three injured and captured.

Apparently the other five, after several weeks, showed up reporting for duty in England.

I, or someone, should write a story based on how they got back. It seems the French Resistance was an actual Thing.

Charlevoix, MI is wildly expensive and part of the NW Lower Peninsula "here's where assholes from Chicago and places downstate in MI come to price locals out of the housing market". I loathe such locusts.

There is an active old-timers v newcomers political war going on in my hometown further north in the sfate that has the "Why can't we all get along?" types wringing their hands. Consider the contempt the newbs have for the old-timers and you'll understand why, bub. It does not help that Northern Michigan University and the Regional Hospital now dominate the economy.

I know for certain, more than the Marines in the Pacific Theater.

Add in the U.S. Navy, and I'm less than certain.

Add in the U.S Merchant Marine? Doff your hats and take a knee, Horde.

Merchant Marine seldom even got to fire back, and then, usually only when a U.S. Navy contingent was on board to fire the few deck guns allocated to the odd Liberty Ship, or such.

And our despicable Govt. didn't give them Veterans' Benefits till most were aged, dead and gone.

Nice idea, but I don't have much. He wrote his memoirs, but after the war he got involved in top secret research, suffered from a brain tumor and died in the late 50s. The entire contents of his office were collected and destroyed on his death, including his memoirs. I have maybe 30 pages, and while they're fascinating to read, it's not much. The story is incomplete.

What's interesting to me is that it's obvious to me that he suffered from the same disgraphia that I do. For me, with modern computers and spell check, it's a very minor annoyance. For him, on a typewriter...yeah, I can see it plainly.

Posted by: Miklos used to write stuff at August 18, 2023 01:49 AM (6PEWs)

Indeed. Read a book by a tailgunner- his daughter was in my sister’s high school class. He saw a Liberator take a direct flak hit over France. Looked like confetti. He never saw any parachutes and reported it back at base. Weeks later the two waist gunners arrive back at his base and are clearing out their gear. They survived with the help of the French Resistance. He had so much praise for them. If an airmen got shot down and captured they’re sent to a luft stalag. If a member if the FR is caught they would be tortured fir information and put to death. The two crewmen were sent home because they knew two much about the FR and werent allowed to fly again.

The author thought those two waist gunners were ghosts at first. Turns out the flak shell that destroyed their plane knocked them unconscious. They free fell that way for a while but came to about 5,000 feet above the earth and pulled the rip chords.

605 Morning, insomniacs! I'm up early after being milk-treaded by the big black cat. That's the way it goes sometimes. ON the other hand, Friday!

Best Small Towns in Each State: Most of the ones I looked at sounded like tourist magnets. Great if you want to start a business catering to them, not so good if you want to get away from crowds. Lousy-ana's pick of St. Francisville, I've only heard of it and have never been there. But the pic of the gigantic oak trees is the kind of thing I can see right here in City Park. No thanks. And Spearfish, SD, sounds like this dump at Mardi Gras time (but the pic of the main street is attractive).

As for the Bee's view of the pros and cons of each state, LA's con of "You have just died of diabetes" is actually spot on. The number of fat people here . . . jeez.
