Governor ProgBot

As virtually everyone is now aware, the historic wildfire that has ripped through the Hawaiian island of Maui has been devastating for parts of that island. Hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed. Nearly a hundred people are confirmed dead because of the blaze (as of the time of writing). It is a nightmare scenario of compounded problems and complexity from the speed of the fire's spread to the absence of effective warning.

The devastation of a major fire calls for competence, leadership, sympathy and calm. If you have happen to have a progressive robot governor, however, any of these will be hard to come by. Hawaii has such a robot. Governor Josh Green has an unremarkable resume. Undergrad in anthropology followed by med school, followed by a residency. From there, into the HHS' National Health Service Corps. This program helps pay off student loans for doctors in exchange for participation. He was deployed to Hawaii to work as a doctor in rural parts of the Big Island.

After three or four years of this, he ran for office and won, entering the Hawaii House of Representatives. After four years in Hawaii politics - longer than his stint as a subsidized doctor in the state - he ran for the state senate and won. He lasted longer there, racking up 10 years before running as Lieutenant Governor for David Ige. During his time in that office, he also headed up the state's ineffective and oppressive COVID policy - after all, he's a doctor! - and in 2022, he finished rolling up the government ramp and landed in the governor's mansion.

Governor Josh Green has responded about as well as should be expected for a long-term professional politician with zero real-world experience in anything. His entire career from academia to doctoring to politics has been marked by lurching between one subsidized appointment to the next. He has no knowledge of the real world or real people, and it showed during this fire. It started out okay (sort of). He gave firm warnings to those who had fled that they needed to be prepared to witness total devastation:

"We will continue to see loss of life," Green said during a news conference late Thursday. "We also have many hundreds of homes destroyed, and that's going to take a great deal of time to recover from." ... "Now I want to caution everyone, Lahaina is a devastated zone," Green warned Friday in an interview with local station KHON. Returning residents "will see destruction like they've not ever seen in their lives. Everyone, please brace themselves as they go back."
Fair enough. That's the reality right now and those going back into the burn zone to sort through the wreckage should be forewarned that it's going to be bad. But what to do about it now? What are causes? How do Maui generally and Lahaina specifically recover? Here's where it goes off the rails. There will, of course, be an investigation - ahem, I mean a "comprehensive review" - of the fire to "understand" it:
Green said he has authorized a "comprehensive review" of the response to the fast-moving fires. Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez will spearhead that review, her office announced Friday.
"My Department is committed to understanding the decisions that were made before and during the wildfires and to sharing with the public the results of this review," Lopez said in a statement. "As we continue to support all aspects of the ongoing relief effort, now is the time to begin this process of understanding."
We must "understand" the events leading up to and following the blaze. Being nice and gentle and loving and progressive, however, the governor and his AG dare not call it an "investigation."

Not that an investigation is needed when the causes are already known. It was, of course, professional incompetence on the part of the telecommunications companies and the Dread Global Warming that are to blame for the apparently poor response and the fire itself, respectively:

"The telecommunications were destroyed very rapidly," the governor said, blaming the rapid spread of the fires on "global warming, combined with drought, combined with a superstorm."
On rebuilding, Governor Green keeps up the talking points. Recovery will be slow and expensive due to Hawaii's remoteness, but we can't forget the ongoing devastation caused by the hangover of COVID policies (policies he himself helped to develop and push with grotesque abandon), which will make everything harder:
Green added that restoring utilities will likely to be a lengthy process because of Lahaina's remote location, as workers and raw materials cannot simply be driven to Hawaii. "This is not to make an excuse. This is just to explain the realities of the island, especially in the post-Covid era," he said.
I am sure the families of the dead and those who have had their way of life reduced to cinders will find comfort in the governor blaming global warming, telcos and a severe chest cold a couple of years back for what ails and will continue to ail them.

But eventually, after great time and expense, Lahaina and the other destroyed areas will be rebuilt. The residents there can rest assured that it will be a progressive undertaking - one in line with their "values:"

"All of those buildings virtually are going to have to be rebuilt," Green said Thursday. "It will be a new Lahaina that Maui builds in its own image with its own values."
Whatever the hell that means.

None of what Governor Josh "ProgBot" Green has said has any meaning whatsoever. Every statement is a platitude that shows no knowledge or understanding. The excuses are as rote and predictable as the politically-sanitized statements of mealy-mouthed pseudo-sympathy. There is nothing that Governor Green has said or done that could not have been generated by any of today's currently available - albeit deeply flawed, often incorrect and sometimes deceitful - "AI" systems. Other than Green's physical shell, there's little evidence that he isn't one.

51 Blow me. Hawaii is a welfare state. They have the most generous programs of any state in the nation. The state government spends almost a full 25% of their budget on handouts, more than on education. The rest of that budget is wasted on the typical blue state garbage. For a state that prides itself on its nature preserves and ecology, they spend almost zero on reducing the forest fire risks. No money for that, when everyone has their hands out. They picked their priorities. They chose badly.

Now they're bleating everything from climate change to attacking the power companies and every other liberal shibboleth.

Maybe they can ask Oprah for a few million, because any Republicans throwing money at that state without some very big strings attached should be primaried.

57 They took over land and changed it bringing in grass and all sorts of non native plants and tried to make the place look like upstate New York. $hit dried out in the summer and caught on fire.

Not quite - Lahaina used to be surrounded by sugar cane and pineapple plantations. Since the sugar cane fields were burned every year, there were firebreaks around the fields.

The plantations couldn't compete with the Philippines and elsewhere, so they were abandoned, and fire-prone non-native grasses were allowed to take over.

So, you have kindling on the hills behind Lahaina, prevailing winds towards Lahaina, and Lahaina gets little rain, because it is in a rain shadow.

Who could have predicted a problem?

Their homes, not so much. (One is hosting many of the others in their home.)

Shockingly, one of our favorite businesses survived: Maui Ku'ia Estate Chocolate. Their farm was damaged by the winds, but spared the fire and the buildings literally across the street from their factory burned down, but they were untouched.

Because a rich guy who moved into Maui founded it (you can read the history there), he donates all profits to local charities. In addition to straight donations, buying from them (it's high-end, expensive chocolate) would help recovery by paying salaries and donations to charities if anyone is looking other ways to help. (I just checked their site. They are giving 25% of all sales to recovery efforts- not profit, revenue.)

Another option for people to help.

Posted by: Diogenes at August 14, 2023 04:01 PM (hv9bm)

102 @35 that article seems pretty comprehensive. The fires seem almost inevitable, reading the conditions set-up by Hurricane Dora and Lahaina being already so dry. I suppose the electric utility will end up taking a big share of the blame, too (at least for the fires). But the main fault for the death-toll obviously lies with the inaction of authorities.

The National Weather Service noted in a tweet before the fires started that significant differences in atmospheric pressure between the hurricane and the air north of Hawaii formed a pressure gradient over the islands which, when combined with dry conditions, posed a serious threat of fires as well as damaging winds.

"While Hurricane Dora passes well south with no direct impacts here, the strong pressure gradient between it & the high pressure to the north creates a threat of damaging winds & fire weather (due to ongoing dry conditions) from early Mon to Wed," the agency said at the time.

109 Someone at DU posted this Saturday...only 3 responses since lol:

Hawaii Officials Were Warned Years Ago That Maui's Lahaina Faced High Wildfire Risk. Nearly a decade before a wildfire destroyed the coastal Maui town of Lahaina, a report by Hawaiian fire researchers warned that the area was at extremely high risk of burning.

Another report, in 2020, tied fires to winds from a passing hurricane—similar to the ones that fanned the Lahaina blaze. And the state’s electric utility had for years worried about wildfire risk in the area. It even flew drones to monitor conditions.

Yet local authorities said in the aftermath of this week’s devastation that though they knew wildfires were becoming more frequent in Hawaii, they weren’t prepared for one to roar through Lahaina.

Someone snipped a report countering that SOME of the recommendations had been implemented, like brush clearing and a landowner education campaign, but other things like "improved emergency response capabilities" were skipped due to lack of funding. I'm sure the Feds will pour money in now!

The report recommended a thorough risk assessment of fire hazards, but it’s not clear whether officials heeded the recommendation. "

118 How do Maui generally and Lahaina specifically recover?

The answer is what it always is: with a great deal of taxpayer money, much of it wasted, and with no lessons learned.

Green added that restoring utilities will likely to be a lengthy process because of Lahaina's remote location, as workers and raw materials cannot simply be driven to Hawaii. "This is not to make an excuse. This is just to explain the realities of the island, especially in the post-Covid era," he said.

This is not true and should not be spread as the truth.

Per the commander general of the National Guard:

"We don't know what actually ignited the fires, but we were made aware in advance by the National Weather Service that we were in a red flag situation — so that's dry conditions for a long time, so the fuel, the trees and everything, was dry," Maj. 179 Invasive highly flammable grasses in Hawaii have been key to fueling the deadliest wildfires in the US in more than 100 years, experts say. While factors such as extreme weather events from climate change and the state’s local power grid have been blamed for helping to cause the blaze, large plots of land in Hawaii have been overrun by volatile non-native fire-prone grasses that are fueling the deadly flames, according to experts. Land that was once occupied by irrigated pineapples and sugar cane was taken over by the grass species as those businesses began to decline.

Once they get "activated" the Navy has to round up all of the medical people to man the ships which is a time consuming operation that leaves other US Navy medical facilities short handed unless they call up Reserves.

The islands are all volcanic in nature. This means they tend to have "rain shadows" where rain is relatively scarce compared to the other side. You can see an extreme example of this in South America. The east side of the Andes is very lush and tropical. The west side (e.g., Chile) can be dry as a bone. Satellite view of Google maps shows this quite clearly.

262 I've read comments that say the roads there suck -- there are only two of them and one is so bad that rental cars won't cover damage caused there.

The main road is OK - there is even a fast bypass so you can avoid the development along the coast.

The alternate road along the north part of West Maui is famously awful - not wide enough for two cars in some places, on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, and no guardrails.

Apparently there are signs up saying "Locals Only" on the bad road.

I'm not sure why the governor is making it sound as if Lahaina is on the far side of the moon - there is a perfectly serviceable road to Lahaina an hour from the port and airport.

331 Yes, I devour any reading about Capt. Cook. Locals treated them like gods. Then Cook had one of his crew die on board ship. Cook asked the locals for permission to bury his dead on the island, in a Christian ceremony. That's when the locals caught on, hey these ain't gods, they are mortal. They bleed and die just like us. Talk about a massive cluster fook...

3 weeks ago, HONOLULU (KHON2) — Governor Josh Green, M.D. is touting Hawaiʻi’s sustainability accomplishments at the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council which is taking place in New York City between Wednesday, July 12 and July 19.

In part, “We try to lead on energy and climate, we’re the first state to mandate 100% renewable energy for electricity,” said Gov. Green to the UN forum. “So, it’s again an opportunity as a small state with technically a small footprint; but we do punch above our weight a little bit because of our position in the Pacific.”

382 Sirens on the Hawaiian islands (all of them) are to alert the populace of an approaching tsunami. You hear that, it means to get the hell away from the water and go as far upland as possible. I'm not sure what triggers them, probably a notification from the Tsunami Warning Centers to Hawaiian Civil Defense. Seriously doubt that it would occur to anyone to use them to alert about a wildfire, and likely no one would understand it was about a fire, anyway. Besides, when people are ingrained to go inland upon hearing the sirens, they'd be headed straight for the wildfires which were burning inland, and that would only make the situation worse.

Is it really bad luck? Or government policies incentivizing cheap labor and less regulation elsewhere in the world?"

My understanding is that under the sugar tariffs (quotas?) that were put in place to protect mainland beet-sugar producers, Hawaiian sugar does not count as domestically produced and is subject to a price floor.

Had a coworker who worked and lived there for five years. Hated it. He couldn't wait to get out. So much for paradise on earth, eh?

Same here. He said they are the most racist people on earth. Escaped the island with the shirt on his back and not much more. Talented dude. Apparently that doesn't count there.

417 The State of Hawaii and Western Maui in particular are what most if not all of the United States awaits. The competent fraction there who keep the utilities working, mostly natives and multiple generation white residents (in Maui, not the rest of the state, which is more Asian American), are retiring. Those coming behind them simply do not have the capacity to operate complex systems. These once-coveted utility jobs are filled by people hired on the basis of political connections; illegals from the mainland go there to work. I haven't scanned the comments yet, but the once reliable water system has grown more and more spotty. "Green" considerations are paramount when infrastructure is discussed. Back to the water, a complex and ludicrous system of "consultation" with Native Hawaiian "leaders" is required before expansion; riparian rights are literally viewed through the prism of race.

As for the failed communications system, this in not a one-off. On Oahu during heightened tensions with Korea, false alarms of incoming missiles went out in Honolulu causing people to run for cover and to put their children into sewer drains and so forth. Reverse situation, same problem.

"All of those buildings virtually are going to have to be rebuilt," Green said Thursday. "It will be a new Lahaina that Maui builds in its own image with its own values."
Whatever the hell that means.

Virtually rebuilt, not literally rebuilt, which is the more correct and meaningful phrase to use here.

What a putz.

420 What caused it? Easy.

1) Eucalyptus trees, a non-native invasive species that have been on the island for decades. Stuff burns like gasoline.

2) poor roads and infrastructure.

3) poor forestry management.

4) Put metal roofs on the buildings and underground the electrical dummy.

423 "It will be a new Lahaina that Maui builds in its own image with its own values."
Says the haole.

And, yes, let's focus on the tragedy and not the politics for a few more days.

424 The main problem is that when the sugar cane business collapsed the land was not utilized but held in reserve to exploit land values and sales for new neighborhoods. If you had been to Lahaina in the 1970s or 1980s you would have seen lots of cane fields all around Lahaina town. When they let the land fallow these grasses grew and made for dangerous conditions for wild fires. As another commentator said without the sugar cane properties being maintained it created a bad situation. It's galling to hear the Governor Green blame climate change. And no, hurricanes are not any different today in the pacific than 100 years ago, it's a combination of natural events and malfeasance on the part of Maui and State governments not making mitigating actions to prevent this horrible, horrible tragedy.
