The Saturday Night Joke

An American soldier, serving in World War II, had just returned from several weeks of intense action on the German front lines. He had finally been granted R&R and had made it to Southampton, England, there to board a train bound for a few days in London.

The train was very crowded, so the soldier walked the length of the train, looking for an empty seat. The only unoccupied seat he found was one directly across from a well-dressed, middle-aged lady and was being used by her little dog. The war-weary soldier asked, “Please, ma’am, may I sit in that seat?” The English woman looked down her nose at the soldier, sniffed and said, “You Americans. You are such a rude class of people. Can’t you see my little Fifi is using that seat?”

The soldier walked away, determined to find a place to rest, but after another trip to the end of the train, he found himself once again facing the woman with the dog in the opposite seat. Again he asked, “Please, lady. May I sit there? I’m very tired.”

The English woman wrinkled her nose and snorted, “You Americans! Not only are you rude, but you are also quite arrogant. Imagine!”

The soldier leaned against the swaying wall of the train and again asked if he might please sit down. The lady said, “Not only are you Americans rude and arrogant, you’re also very inconsiderate.”

The soldier didn’t say anything else. Instead, he leaned over, picked up the little dog, tossed it out the window of the train, and sat down in the empty seat. The woman shrieked and railed, demanding that someone defend her and chastise the soldier.

An English gentleman sitting across the aisle spoke up, “You know, sir, you Americans do seem to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You eat holding your fork in the wrong hand. You drive your autos on the wrong side of the road. And now, sir, you’ve thrown the wrong bitch out the window.” (H/T TN Deplorable)

Investigators allege that an “irate” Andres Perez, 34, and his spouse had been arguing about “financial and infidelity issues” when the lawman “stormed into the kitchen in [his wife’s] direction throwing a McDonald’s cheeseburger at her.”
The victim told police that Perez then struck her with a closed fist “to the right side of head behind ear” during the incident in their Miramar residence, according to an arrest report.

If they're unhappy now, imagine how unhappy they'll be when they have to go to a suburb to shop, which is the direction things are heading in.

Not only walked to and from school, I used to go home for lunch. Parents lived less than a block away from the school, so they allowed it. Mom would have tomato soup and grilled cheese sammiches ready to rock.I mentioned this innocently to some cow orkers once, and they couldn’t believe it.

165 I started school in September 1952 and that article is pretty much on target. Full day Kindergarten, with a nap in the late morning or right after lunch (on the floor on a blanket you brought from home). There was a piano in the classroom and the Kindergarten teacher would gather all the kids (around 40 of us) around the piano as she played songs we kids could all sing along with. That first year of school taught many of us valuable lessons, lessons that would carry over to first grade and beyond.

As an aside, three of the teachers I had in elementary school also taught my mom when she attended that school in the 1920's. The principal was one of her teachers as well. A damn good education back then.

I have a driveway full of Apache Tears, well I used to. I started polishing them and they were a huge hit with the nieces. They would come over and mine a few hundred and expect next time they came over they would be polished.
One time I found a bunch of heart shaped ones in Virginia City so I bought them, took them home and put them in the polisher. When those kids came over I played it good. They were convinced those rocks had turned into hearts for years. Now.. it's the reason they think I am full of shit about everything.

I grew up in Phoenix, and had a grandfather from Wisconsin who had a little rockshop in his basement back home. He'd come to visit us and my dad had learned about this volcanic site out in the desert where there was a huge bank of hard ash that was packed full of apache tears. They would go out there and fill up the back of a station wagon with hundreds of pounds of that stuff, bring it home, and we'd sit out in the back yard and help them break all the apache tears out of the ash matrix. It was actually kind of fun, it felt like gold mining. Then Grampa would polish them up in his tumblers. Don't remember if I still have any around.

Same here, though my grade school had kindergarten but I didn't go, so first was the beginning. My problem was that, as I sat quietly in Mrs. Lindemann's classroom (funny how some things/names are just automatically remembered), I was just looking around the classroom, taking it all in, softly whistling. Next thing I knew I was in the nun's class (two classrooms a grade, one with nun and one without). I ended up with the nun home classroom the rest of my 8 years there. I have no idea what any of that means. Whistling as an indication of future disruptive behavior (which wasn't me at all)?

It's been one heck of a week, when it rains, it pours. Today, Miley and I went to the funeral of the wife of my cousin, the retired meterologist this afternoon. She died early Thursday morning, just 72.

She had a time the last decade. In '91, she got breast cancer. That and the treatment induced lymphedema. They had it under control until about 2019, when it got out of hand. A little over a year ago, she just got sick of having to deal with keeping her legs elevated and all that. She ended up at Augusta Burn Center due to 3rd degree burns induced by uric acid build up, then was in a nursing home.

Sores on her legs got infected all the time, and this week, they overwhelmed her system. She was in the same hospital, a few rooms down from my father. My cousin came in the room, while my mother and I were in there with my father, and said it didn't look good.

They put her in ICU, and she passed the next morning.

My mother went to Furman U in her youth in the early '50s, women's college (that was a separate thing back then). Home Economics was a college level course for young womyns in college back then.

That is, they taught the young womyns in college a higher ed level of the subject.

We have a favorite vegetable beef soup recipe that comes from that home economics course at Furman my mother took.

At that college level Home Economics class they taught things like canning, and food preservation. Household budgeting. Proper nutrition. These young womyns was likely going to be wives and mother, and these were skills they needed to know.

In the Auld Lang Syne frame of mind I'm in now, Miley, my mother and I got to looking at old pictures, including my mother and father's wedding album.

1957. It tied in with my cousin, as there were pictures of his parents there, and him, as a 9 year old boy. There were some funny ones. One of my father and mother, just married leaving for their honeymoon. There was the throwing of the rice. My little cousin there, 9 yrs old, picked up a handful, stepped up and threw a wad as hard as he could at them. He hit my mother right in the face.

The photographer captured that moment. My cousin is laughing, and his mother is reaching out to grab him, and pull him away. She gave him a little smack on his little behind according to memories.

And finally, the best one of them all. A shot of my father and mother, in their primes, 1957, about to leave on their honeymoon, standing in my maternal grandmother's living room.

My father is wearing a pair of two-tone wingtip shoes, black and white. My mother is beside him, all spiffed up herself, with white gloves on. My father has a look on his face, proud of himself. "Look at what I done did."

With those two-tone wingtips, he looks like something Barney Fife would be wearing about to take Thelma Lou to the big hootenanny.

My weedeater repair job was a great success; got the little two-stroke engine running like a pup, and was able to buy a spool of .105" trimmer line at the local ag dealer. Got nearly all the grass on the shoulder of the road going into the ditch mowed with, too, before the string got too worn down to continue, and I called it a day. Engine never missed a beat. The wheels are set too close together for it to work really well on a sidehill, so I had to torque on the handle a lot to keep it from toppling over. A few modifications are in order...

I'll have Miley send those three I mentioned to you. It's very good. Late '50s America. Those two-tone wingtips my father was wearing are just a hoot. I see you can still get some shoes like that, very expensive, and a bit different, but it was a hoot.

I'm not objective, but Miley is a little more than I am, but I must say my young mother in her prime there was not a bad looking woman. Not at all.

My father was just beaming, "Look at this gal I done married! I done good!"

Another funny story about that wedding, lo so many years ago. My cousin's father there, my uncle -- ah, hell, doesn't matter, Uncle Alvin.

Uncle Alvin, in his youth and on up, was quite the prankster. He'd pull all kinds of shit, and went Too Far more than once with his prank pulling.

Now, my young father had entrusted Uncle Alvin with keeping his car safe, keeping it in an undisclosed location, so "the gang" couldn't mess up it, "decorating" it with all sorts of "Just Married" stuff.

Well, guess what. Uncle Alvin didn't do that. He spilled the beans, and was even the ring leader in putting all sorts of "Just Married" stuff all over that car.

Now, young Daddy got quite pissed at Uncle Alvin about that. While he was still in his right mind, he could still get worked up about that. Apparently they messed his car up a bit, and he had to Spend Money to get it cleaned up.

In that photo I mentioned of my father and Uncle Alvin, in their prime, all spiffed up, you can see it. Uncle Alvin had a look on his face that he was just about to Pull Something. You can see it. Like he had just put a whoopie cushion under somebody.

I'm remembering a funny story about ol' Uncle Alvin. In the mid-'70s with Jimmuh Carter running for President of these here United States, there was Playboy interview.

Well, Uncle Alvin bought a Playboy to read that interview. His wife, Aunt Madge, was not too pleased about that. "Hell, honey, I just wanted to read the Jimmuh interview -- I wasn't lookin' at them nekkid womyns! Honest!".
