  • So, that new room-temperature superconductor announcement? Maybe not, say other scientists. (Science)

And one of the tests supposed to illustrate its superconducting properties might just be demonstrating Lenz's law. Superconductors respond in interesting ways to static magnetic fields, but regular conductors can respond in similar ways to changing magnetic fields, so the actually demonstrate superconductivity you have to keep your field static, which they kind of completely failed to do, at least in one particular video.

It's not fraud or anything, since the paper describes exactly how to create the alleged miracle material, just possible bad research.

Seems they finally did it, incandescent light bulbs are soon to be banned
“I’m happy the Department of Energy is out here, making sure that we can all save money because we’re too dumb to figure out how to do it ourselves,” Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R- Penn., said.

I went for a Samsung A53 last year when I needed a 5G phone because my internet got blown up by a lightning strike. Pretty decent phone, not too expensive, great screen.

16 Biden's Dog,

I was dumb enough to buy a Nord OnePlus N10 5G. I have tried undoing this, but it will only boot up for less than a minute at a time, and the reset button, like many other features, simply isn't responding.

23 I didn't know they were re-starting the ban. I'm running out of my stash of incandescent bulbs. They are already hard to find in stores

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at July 30, 2023 04:57 AM (qqZ/9)

24 At least LED bulbs aren't actively terrible, just overpriced, unlike the compact fluorescent bulbs which were both.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 30, 2023 04:59 AM (BLOW1)

25 One of the reasons they wanted incandescents outlawed was that they throw heat off when in use.

I guess none of the outlawers live in a cold climate where the heat is an added benefit 7 months out of the year.

I also think that a lot of the current lampshades in your house were designed to diffuse the light from incandescent light. The LED give off a light that makes it harder to see. Which is kinda of negative in the light department.

Posted by: Bruce at July 30, 2023 05:04 AM (9/UYM)

I like a well lit kitchen so I installed six eyeball fixtures over the countertops. With incandescent bulbs it fried my scalp, with LED's my scalp stays cool. I can even use a dimmer on them. Somewhat. A narrow range before they complain.

34 I also found out that LED bulbs won't work with my garage door opener. The bulb found in the opener itself.

I guess they emit a radio frequency that can interfere with the opener.

But, the one right next to you head while you're reading is totes okay

Posted by: Bruce at July 30, 2023 05:11 AM (9/UYM)

35 I had stocked up on incandescents about 10 years ago.

I still have a lot of incandescent bulbs left in closets where I hardly turn them on. A few when we cleaned out the in-laws house when they passed. But mostly when one burns out I'd rather replace with an LED. At some point in the next 20 years I'll break even on the electricity cost vs the outlay.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at July 30, 2023 05:23 AM (enJYY)

40 Another room temp superconductor experiment that was poorly done?

I don't mind the LED's, except when it comes to a reading light or ones for the actual living areas.
The LED's also don't seem to fill the room with light.

I know, I'm weird.

42 I did replace the overhead garage light with one of the 3 blade type lights I had seen advertised. Looks like a small fan, but you can move each of the blades to point in a different direction if you want. That works well.

My new one is a Samsung Galaxy, and it is much easier to use than the LG I had for three years. I can actually text and type on the screen without frequently hitting the wrong keys, and the "accept an incoming call" where you slide the green handset icon up actually works. And I can delete old calls without accidentally calling the number. Much better all around.

58 Re phones...I have 2 samsung s10e phones. They work well but support will end. I don't mind being stuck at this last update. The reason I have the s10e is because I got it for $179. 60 The bulb ban has me fit to be tied. Setting aside the whole totalitarian forced change to WAY more expensive bulbs that actually do not last the 10 years fraudulently claimed, the bases on the new bulbs don't fit in the carriage lamps on the front of my house. So when my stash runs out, I'll need to spend a couple thousand dollars to replace them with cheap chinese shit that will likely not fit the mounting holes in the brick. Bad enough when that happens in drywall, and it has every time I've tried a simple bathroom update. I want these totalitarian nannies/nazis shipped off to the soylent green factory...

64 I've been doing this for a very long time, and every time Microsoft changes the Windows shell people lose their shit - until the _next_ shell change, where everyone who bitched about the last shell change suddenly decides the last shell was perfection incarnate.

It's tedious. Why the hell are you spending that much time in the shell anyway? Don't you have work to do?
