I went to a new dentist a month or so ago. They didn't say I needed it but they asked me like 3 times if I had ever had a deep cleaning? Something like that, where they numb you up and clean aggressively below the gum line. I aint doing that unless I start having mouth pain. I HATE that hour or three of numb mouth afterwards when I have to get a filling, I aint doing it just for extra clean teeth.

I have a couple of questions for the Horde. We have any dentists? Little went to the dentist this week for an exam and to get his teeth cleaned. They told him he had “a touch of gingivitis” and they couldn't do a regular cleaning, they would have to do a super special cleaning for $250. He declined. Is there anything to that, or were they just trying to rip off a teenager?
Not a dentist but probably a ripoff. Super special cleaning is usually reserved for severe calculus buildup (higher pressure water cleaning like a Cavitron) or periodontitis (deep cleaning requiring anesthesia). Hi WD! Great ONT. My bride happens to be a dental hygienist. What you're describing is a more in-depth procedure where they clean deep under the gums. I believe it usually requires local anesthetic. And yes, it does cost a pretty penny if insurance doesn't cover.

My dentist is pulling the same thing. The hygenist screams number at me like "OMG 5! 5! ", then runs out of the room to talk to the woman who handles the insurance. Ten to twenty minutes goes by, hygenist tells me they have to wait to get a preauthorization from my insurance. And it's not $250 total, it's $300 PER QUADRANT. And my teeth still haven't been cleaned, and I've wasted another morning. I then wasted another morning changing my dental insurance so that periodontal scaling is covered. I like this dentist, because I appreciate that he can machine crowns on site, but that hygenist...

The dog zoo reminded me, there was a woman in my old neighborhood who was a dog groomer. She had a white standard poodle. She would dye it pink and give it that fluffy trim and brush out. Hi WD! Great ONT. My bride happens to be a dental hygienist. What you're describing is a more in-depth procedure where they clean deep under the gums. I believe it usually requires local anesthetic. And yes, it does cost a pretty penny if insurance doesn't cover.
I should clarify. I know deep cleaning is a thing, I had it once, but what sounded like a scam to me (and to Little too, he didn't buy it and left. Smart kid, proud of him) was the "we can't do a regular cleaning because you have mild gingivitis" Posted by: Weirddave at June 23, 2023 10:45 PM (dYOvA) 121
My dentist is pulling the same thing. The hygenist screams number at me like "OMG 5! 5! ", then runs out of the room to talk to the woman who handles the insurance. Ten to twenty minutes goes by, hygenist tells me they have to wait to get a preauthorization from my insurance. And it's not $250 total, it's $300 PER QUADRANT

My husband has periodontal disease. Fortunately for us the major expensive stuff was done while he was active duty. But now he is diabetic and has given up sugar (sucks, but he was determined to have it controlled by diet) and all of the sudden his teeth are much, much better. He doesn't need the deep cleanings anymore. Diabetes is awful, but it looks like it is going to save his teeth.

Cleaning under the gum is for when there is gum disease. Nasty bacteria. I had it done, no big deal. If your gums bleed easily when you brush your teeth then you most likely have periodontal disease. Under local anesthetic the gum is lifted and a particular antibiotic mixture is injected in the space. They did one side of the mouth in one session and the other side in a separate session.

Randalls is famous for convincing Boris Yeltsin that communism was a failure. Even plebes in the United States had better stores than the party bosses in the USSR. Square was going out of business when they released Final Fantasy for the NES and it was their last chance.
It was popular, so they got to make more. Of course, now they make God of War clones rather than turn based RPGs, but whatever. Posted by: Methos at June 23, 2023 11:47 PM (kOpft) I believe that story is more urban legend than not. Square wasn't in great financial shape at the time, but the word choice in the title was more a desire for alliteration for marketability. Their first choice, Fighting Fantasy, had copyright issues they wanted to avoid, so the name changed to Final. Posted by: Sjg at June 24, 2023 12:25 AM (Lstct) 307
Well, I got the parts truck started, and took it for a short drive. Transmission goes through the gears smartly, as it should. No "check engine" light! Steering was a little vague, but a roll-over can tweak the front end a bit. Not an issue, since this truck is to be parted out. Got it on the hoist, and it barely fit. There is barely an inch of wiggle room between either a front tire or a rear tire rolling off the end of the ramp. I may try to rig some chains and boomers to stop it from rolling, so as not to rely completely on the wheel chocks.

Spent the afternoons on the beach or golfing. I had my car so I explored the Gulf Coast. I ate, drank, played golf, got sun burnt. Oh, and went to that class. Eventually completed it and went on leave and then the UK. I never used Morse Code after that. Greenham Common closed and they sent me to Croughton AB instead. A taxpayer funded vacation. Dental health is a much bigger thing than a lot of people realize. We have had to do heart valve replacements on people who got endocarditis from dental infections that became septic. I wouldn’t dismiss the dentist out of hand. If you think your kid was being scammed, he can ask to see what the measurements of his gums were. And anything beyond 4 may be considered periodontitis.; beyond 5, and it needs care beyond the routine.

We all know that Morse code can be useful to get a message through when propagation conditions are too poor for voice or data. And you can "key" a CW transmitter with nearly any sort of switch.
But with all the computing power we have now, why not use a computer app to generate Morse keying from a keyboard? Touch "a" and get "dit-dah". And so on. And the program could work in reverse to copy a CW signal. It "hears" dit-dah, and displays "a" on the screen. And you could have it record the CW as an mp3 file on the drive, so if the copy was buggy, you could try it again, or copy manually. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 24, 2023 12:51 AM (KVgGH) 351

https://tinyurl.com/47te8vk2 Posted by: mikeski at June 24, 2023 01:03 AM (DgGvY) Heh. I do know that Morse code for telegraphy differs from that used for radio communication. In wired telegraphy, the sounder only clicks when the key changes state, from up to down. Holding the key down yields no sound form the sounder. In radio telegraphy, hold the key down, and your transmitter sends a continuous wave (hence, CW). The coding is the length of the transmitted pulses. Every single person associated with that program knew that. Anyone who is remotely associated with the ocean and diving knows about the extreme nature of the deep ocean. It's one of the reasons we go to space instead of the deep ocean, space is easier. This is our planet and yet more people have been to space than have been to that deep in our oceans and we have been here for a pretty long time. We spend billions to send people into space and we know a lot more about it. They were trying to do something much more dangerous for a fraction of the money. Seriously. From the Horde, it would take AOP, Publius, Mike Hammer, several others with some flair for mechanical design and execution, knowledge of Naval (especially undersea) history, and the sense to discern "oh shit, that don't look right" design insight, to have known. The average, wide and glazed eyed zillionaire who booked onto a tour like that, was not only fucked from the start, but lacked the barest insight as to exactly WHY they were fucked, the moment those hatch bolts were torqued. A more widely distributed set of similar knowledge, are experienced aircraft pilots. They do tend to know a shitty airframe design at first sight. They're attuned to "what works", and are strongly repelled by designs that "don't". Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 24, 2023 01:24 AM (e6UQI) 383

And the best depth was, on average, about 300-400 feet, with some being able to go to almost a thousand feet. That is so much shallower than the 12,000 foot depth the Titanic is located. I've looked at the design, a lot now. Though the viewport and it's 3/4" distortion is a prime candidate, my bet is on the glue joint between the titanium and carbon fiber. THAT, is the least robust point on the whole design. It's not a joint designed to become stronger under compression. And I ain't read shit about computing the distortion differentials between the titanium caps and carbon fiber hull tube. Let's be VERY generous, and assume a 0.001" flex at max distortion from surface to depth. Now, repeat that flex over four, five dives or so. That glue IS going to fail. PERIOD. Pressure got in there, and POP! Both end caps are ejected off of the tube, just as the debris field is described. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 24, 2023 01:37 AM (e6UQI) 389
Actually, the reason the hygienist can't do a "normal" cleaning boils down to liability. If they give you a regular cleaning (when it is known that the deeper cleaning is necessary) and they don't treat the underlying gingivitis, it basically amounts to malpractice.

Posted by: m I think - not 100% sure - that several submersible companies (and the US Navy) tested some preliminary carbon fiber designs and found them wanting so badly as to not continue to secondary design phases. That said, the Titan had made 25 dives, just not all to Titanic depth. With experimental designs, especially one of kind prototypes, the rip it apart tests as done on new models of airplanes can not be done. There is no “line” of identically manufactured vehicles. So the actual “dive hours before failure” can not be observed. Posted by: Adriane the Bad Poetry Critic . . . at June 24, 2023 01:40 AM (jonTH) 394

... I watched them assemble it in one video. The pressure would be the thing holding the ring to the edge of the carbon fiber barrel, not the glue? Maybe the glue joint failed in terms of needing to be a waterstop; was the design hoping that as the pressure rose it would make an incrementally better seal as it descended... In any event the CEO made statements about taking their safety strategy from aerospace not submersibles. That sounds like CEO type BS to me. But even if they were looking at aerospace, your main example right now would be Musk and his testing of things to failure over and over. Jim, my sense is the Navy guys monitoring SOSUS (or whatever is today's acronym) heard the implosion. They knew what it was as soon as they heard it, just not who it was. (I'm no expert, but I would think different sized vessels imploding underwater leave differing noise signatures.) Not until the tourism sub news broke. Then the intelligence analysts put two and two together. But why give that news out immediately? Unless you hate national security. Once you hear an implosion (at around 8,750 feet in depth), there's is no hope for rescue, so there is no urgency when it comes to time nor is there a hurried need to pass on that information. It's already over but for the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

They expected it to be restored as it ascended--therefore they waited until point where they ended their 8-hour time at depth and began to rise. They did wait a couple hours past that but it's not necessarily fair, absent a debris field on the surface, that they didn't call until the end. Did they need a better system? For sure. For fuck's sake guys. I didn't say an off the shelf X-box controller was a good idea. What I said was that that "video game controller" design was damned efficient and ergonomic, and has been loosely adapted for many types of computer interfaces, including in the military.

Threadjacking: when YOU want to talk about what you want to talk about.
Commenting normally: when 'I' want to talk about what I want to talk about. I always wonder at the threadjacking appellation. I think it is very... contextual. We routinely have two or three conversation threads going on simultaneously. Maybe the charge is hurled if you ONLY want people to talk about what you want to talk about- and you only want other people talking about what you want to talk about? I dunno. I have only ever really seen the latter once, maybe twice. And those souls are no longer commenting here. Way late to the dental-advice party. Still wanted to recommend a toothbrush I love, and which is so effective at getting under the gumline and between teeth, that my hygienist thinks I floss.
The brand is Nimbus. They have fine, feathery filaments that probe into tight spaces -- assuming you're brushing properly, that is, slowly and gently. Look them up and order a five-pack for the family. The maker sells them directly and through Amazon. Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at June 24, 2023 10:03 AM (BH/0E) 531
There is a Listerine brand mouthwash you can't buy retail in the US called "Listerine Advanced Defense Gum Treatment" that will clear up the gingivitis. It's available on amazon. It quickly got rid of some redness on my gums around a couple teeth when other mouthwashes and methods including hydrogen peroxide didn't help.
I'm guessing the American dental associations don't want it easily available for obvious reasons and Listerine manufacturer complied. Posted by: SamIam at June 24, 2023 06:26 PM (oasF3) 532
