13 Gruber was committed to realism and to Communism. Job was painted for an exhibition which opened shortly after the liberation of Paris in 1944. Gruber uses the Biblical story of Job's suffering as an allegory for the survival of hope under the Occupation. The inscription, which comes from The Book of Job, translates as: 'Now, once more my cry is a revolt, and yet my hand suppresses my sobs.'

67 Letter reads:
REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

70 Most of the lines in this work are severely vertical. Combined with the narrow picture space, this work feels oppressive. Then Gruber breaks up the verticals with sharp diagonals--in the worn fence and in the man. I like how the man's pose combines both line patterns and how his leg repeats the angle of the fence slat to its immediate left.

The colors are also pale and sickly.

I am writing this letter to let you know that I'm seeing another man. I'm sorry that things didn't work out between us but I cannot put up with your 'no clothes' policy any longer. It was cute at first, especially when you were frying bacon, but now it's just weird. Naked in the store. Naked at work. Naked sitting in alleyways. There is something wrong with you and I just don't have the patience to help mend your broken thinking. Good luck and God Bless.

173 A Turkish homeowner chasing his chickens through a hole in his basement during renovations came across an abandoned underground Turkish city that once housed 20,000 people.

In an effort to recapture his escaping poultry, the unidentified man knocked down the wall in the 1960s to reveal a dark tunnel leading to the ancient city of Elengubu, known today as Derinkuyu.

Derinkuyu, burrowed more than 280 feet beneath the Central Anatolian region of Cappadocia, is the largest excavated underground city in the world and is believed to connect to more than 200 smaller, separate underground cities that were discovered in recent decades.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at June 15, 2023 09:58 AM

I'd say no one on Earth could be that stupid, but I read DU regularly. I think the GOPe has a few puppets they want to see succeed in the primaries, and they'll lean to support in small ways, but they'll be just as happy to see Trump win the nomination and lose the general, too, so no need to be as obvious as the Dems were with the party clearing all competition to ensure Biden won.

I don't know why the mayor of Miami would run. Money? Increase name recognition? It's looking like 2016 again, with a huge pool of candidates, that will quickly whittle down to Trump, the traditional "conservative" (Cruz/DeSantis), and the last Establishment person standing (Kasich and....Haley, maybe?)

No fewer than two persons have been reportedly buried alive for allegedly being behind the lightning believed to have killed one Henry Ihwakaa, his wife and a two-week-old child in the Konshisha Local Government area in Benue State, North Central Nigeria.

It was learnt that Ihwakaa, who is said to be the father of Henry, was accused by the youths of targeting people in the area with lightning strikes any time it rained.

209 The eye has it.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) pulled out his glass eye to protest what he thought was poor officiating during a congressional soccer match Tuesday night, despite Republicans’ 4-2 triumph over a team of Democrats.

“The refs have two eyeballs, but they don’t use them, so I’m just going to give them one of mine,” Crenshaw said before tossing the faux eyeball into the winners’ trophy, prompting laughter from teammates Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.), Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) and former Minnesota GOP Rep. Erik Paulsen.

The US Soccer Foundation and US Soccer Federation hosted the 9th annual Congressional Soccer Match at DC United’s Audi Field. Democrats have traditionally dominated the rivalry and won last year’s game 5-3.

2 Dead After 18-Year-Old Trainee Opens Fire On Soldiers At Firing Range On Japanese Army Base

A deadly shooting took place Wednesday at a firing range located on a Japanese army base, where an 18-year-old army trainee shot three fellow soldiers, resulting in the deaths of two of them.

According to the police, the suspect was apprehended at the scene in Gifu prefecture on charges of attempted murder. During a shooting exercise at the Hino Kihon firing range, the suspect opened fire, targeting the soldiers, officials said.

The Ground Self Defense Force, commonly known as Japan’s army, confirmed that two of the wounded soldiers succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a hospital.

Gen. Yasunori Morishita, the Army Chief of Staff, revealed that the suspect had enlisted in the military in April, and the three soldiers who were shot were serving as instructors, assisting him during the shooting exercise.

An investigation is underway to determine a possible motive.

Democrat Los Angeles Councilman Faces Corruption Charges

CALIFORNIA (LACDAO) – Los Angeles Councilmember Curren Price was charged today for having a financial interest in projects that he voted on and having the city pay for medical benefits for his now wife while he was still married to another woman. [...]

Price was charged with five counts of embezzlement of government funds, three counts of perjury and two counts of conflict of interest. Arraignment will be scheduled for a later date.

According to a criminal complaint, Price’s wife allegedly received payments totaling more than $150,000 between 2019 and 2021 from developers before he voted to approve projects. He also is accused of failing to list the money his wife received on government disclosure forms.

Price is prohibited from having a financial interest associated with any project that was before the City Council.

Additionally, Price is charged with receiving about $33,800 in medical coverage for his wife while he was still married to another woman.

Traditionally, the military is the last bastion to protect Democracy, overthrowing dictators and tyrants, and installing a caretaker government until new elections can be held. Except:

A: the military often doesn't want to relinquish power after attaining it, or

B: the elected leader corrupts the military to back his power grab

Weird how the Left is suddenly so pro-military, and installing all sorts of non-traditional leaders (both in uniform and civilian positions).

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have created model embryos from mouse stem cells that form a brain, a beating heart, and the foundations of all the other organs of the body. It represents a new avenue for recreating the first stages of life.

The team of researchers, led by Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, developed the embryo model without eggs or sperm. Instead, they used stem cells – the body’s master cells, which can develop into almost any cell type in the body.

415 freebeacon:

ESG ratings are supposed to guide investors, and their money, toward ethical enterprises. But Big Tobacco has lapped Tesla in the ESG ratings race more than once: Sustainalytics, a widely used ESG ratings tool, gives Tesla a worse score than Altria, one of the largest tobacco producers in the world. And the London Stock Exchange gives British American Tobacco an ESG score of 94—the third highest of any company on the exchange's top share index—while Tesla earns a middling 65.

How could cigarettes, which kill over eight million people each year, be deemed a more ethical investment than electric cars? It may have something to do with the tobacco industry's embrace of corporate progressivism.

Companies like Altria have gone out of their way to emphasize the diversity of their corporate boards and the breadth of their social justice initiatives, from funding minority businesses to promoting transgender women in sports. But Tesla, whose executives are overwhelmingly white men, has resisted that bandwagon, going so far as to fire its top LGBT diversity officer last year.
