I'm here on Tuesday and what do I get? Some Frenchman yelling at a bunch of ermine-tressed dudes.

29 "Languedoc" was a name for a dialect of French, not the Parisian dialect which later won out, but another which used the word "oc" (instead of "oui") for "yes." So "languedoc" = "language of 'yes'."

Not sure which dialect, though. Occitan? Something from the southern part of France.

She was the heir of a foreign dynasty in Egypt that failed to keep her realm independent.

Yes, she had an interesting life story but...she lost. Why is it so important for a certain set of "intellectuals" to pretend she was black?

Note - there was at least one dynasty in Egypt that possibly was black since they came from the South...why not make some new story about that?

Posted by: 18-1 at May 16, 2023 09:48 AM (lc5cP)

75 Translated by gookle from French:

Main character of the work, Bernard Délicieux is a Franciscan monk from Montpellier, born in 1260. He was one of the most virulent opponents of the Inquisition, during the repression carried out against the Cathar heresy at the end of the 12th century. century to the fourteenth century. This work is part of a series of canvases executed around the figure of this character, and comes as a sequel to two other paintings: The Deliverance of the Walled-off Carcassonne and The Interrogation . Jean-Paul Laurens was to conclude his cycle on Bernard Délicieux with the representation of his defeat in Le Torturé or Après la question.

77 contd
Jean-Paul Laurens was inspired, for this series of paintings, by a text by the historian Bernard Hauréau, "Bernard Délicieux et l'Inquisition albigeoise", published in the form of articles in the Revue des Deux- Mondesin 1868 and taken up in book form in 1877. Jean-Paul Laurens chose to represent the scene of the judgment here: in the front row in the center, facing Bernard Délicieux, the Grand Inquisitor is surrounded by two monks; behind them sit the representatives of the Church, cardinals and bishops.

Wiki says he died at Carcassonne. I sympathize. I've wanted to die many times while playing that game too.

Posted by: Kris at May 16, 2023 09:53 AM (OyyDO)

112 The main character of the work, Bernard Délicieuse, was a Franciscan monk from Montpellier, born in 1260. He was one of the most virulent opponents of the Inquisition, during the repression against the Cathar heresy from the end of the twelfth century to the fourteenth century. This work is part of a series of paintings executed around the figure of this character, and intervenes as a sequel to two other paintings: The Deliverance of the Walled of Carcassonne [andy: Big Bang Theory credits painting] and The Interrogation. Jean-Paul Laurens was to conclude his cycle on Bernard Delicious with the representation of his defeat in The Tortured or After the question.

119 Hey, TJM, I enjoyed your weekend post about Lubitsch.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at May 16, 2023 09:54 AM (uLZl0)

120 Jean-Paul Laurens was inspired, for this series of paintings, by a text by the historian Bernard Hauréau, "Bernard Delicious and the Albigensian Inquisition", published in the form of articles in the Revue des Deux-Mondes in 1868 and reprinted in book form in 1877. Jean-Paul Laurens chooses to represent here the scene of judgment: in the front row in the center, facing Bernard Délicieux, the Grand Inquisitor is surrounded by two religious; behind them sit the representatives of the Church, cardinals and bishops. The monk, dressed in the Franciscan bure, raises a vengeful arm towards those who accuse him, and whose mummified faces, disapproving or indifferent, appear as the very embodiment of the narrow-minded repression.

123 I like this style: The realism, the use of light and color, how each figure is an individual, the detail in the objects, even the somewhat melodramatic poses. The way the scene slants from upper left to lower right suggests movement, not a static image. It all combines to suggest stories to the viewer beside the one that the scene is based on.

That this reminds me of a classic book illustration, worthy of Wyeth or even the Sunday color panels for Prince Valiant, is a strength. There is a dynamism that is very effective and appealing.

127 This attitude is underlined even more explicitly by the attitude of the two monks with concealed faces, while the inquisitor, dressed in ermine, seems scandalized by the Franciscan's remarks. Originally from Languedoc, Jean-Paul Laurens, attached to his provincial roots, could not but be particularly interested in this dramatic episode in the history of his country. To this interest was added a republican anticlericalism, which found in Bernard Delicious's struggle against the fanaticism of the Inquisition a very natural support for his own convictions.

Nicolas d'Abbeville, of the order of friars preachers, exercising the office of inquisitor of the faith in the district of Carcassonne, claims he was there to defend the faith of the dead friar, Castel Fabri.

210 I suspect they didn't vote for it, that they didn't vote at all and the Chicago Machine stole elections for decades.

I think a core part of the Dem machine is to get lists of people that don't vote and then vote in their name.

That's how the voting numbers can be so high - and always for the D candidate - in places full of drug zombies.

In theory this system breaks down if those "I never vote" people actually show up and vote.

The one thing a Republican governor can do to really make changes to political power in his state is to audit voter rolls in cities.

Queen of Palmyra who became regent after the death of her husband... Odaenathus- who essentially 'leased' with imperial consent the eastern portion of the empire after defeating a Persian army. When he was assassinated by a... younger cousin(?) she took over as regent of their son and tried to break the entire eastern empire off. BUT, she went too far when she took over egypt and Aurelian said 'oh no. No No No No No.'

So, he stomped on her and the Palmyrians like a narc at a biker rally. Twice. Then destroyed the city.

Wikipedia, in part: Bernard Delicieux. 2nd arrest and trial: Following torture and threat of excommunication, confessed to the charge of obstructing the Inquisition. Was also found guilty of treason, but not guilty of murdering Pope Benedict XI. No verdict was given for being a Spiritual Franciscan, the original reason for his arrest in Avignon.  As punishment, defrocked and sentenced to life in prison in solitary confinement.  Though the judges sentencing Délicieux ordered that his penance of chains, bread and water be omitted in view of his frailty, age and prior torture, Pope John XXII countermanded their order and delivered the friar to inquisitor Jean de Beaune. Serving this harsh sentence, Délicieux died shortly thereafter in early 1320.

Whether we say sufficient amount of caution, abundance (plenty) of caution, or overabundance of caution, it's a question of degree. The phrase tends to be divorced from the particular circumstances for which caution is being exercised. Whose purview is it to determine how much caution is enough? In a free society, for most circumstances it should be the rational self-interested decision of the individual. Up to a point.
