The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

‘Because the statutes and regulations in question are not consistent with our nation’s history and tradition, they, therefore, cannot stand,’ Robert Payne, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia

Quote II

But when you’re talking about a serious issue like that, and laughter and mocking and all that, that’s, it’s completely inappropriate, without a doubt. And it doesn’t shine a in a positive light on New Hampshire. But again, I understand what the audience makeup was. Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH)

Quote III

So when you mess with Uncle Ted, you lose. [T]he Michael Moore, Joe Biden, Hunter Biden fan club always gets upset when good people are happy." Ted Nugent

Quote IV

“They could force entry to my house and confiscate all of my instruments, which are my livelihood. It was really upsetting. I felt so betrayed and so attacked, because I really had done everything I could. I didn’t know what they expected me to do. It’s my job. I’ve got things to learn, things to practise.”

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's pizza! Drone delivery in Seattle and Tacoma could soon become reality

It might seem like a pie in the sky idea, but that’s because that’s exactly what it is — pizza delivery using flying drones. A plan is cooking up in Seattle to make pizza delivery via drones a reality, and that’s just for starters.

"Obviously, it seems pretty sci-fi and a lot of customers think this is totally insane when they first hear about it,” said Keller Cliffton, cofounder and CEO of Zipline, a delivery drone company. “But what has really struck us is that there are about seven days of sci-fi magical amazement, and then on day eight people are basically bored of it — bored of it in the way that there's no way they're ever going back to the old way of receiving things."

Even when Evil is out to Destroy good and normal, there are still good people left standing. Daniel Penny face's persecution by the unethical and woke NY DA will be able to afford a decent defense.

More than 23,000 donors gathered to donate money to the GiveSendGo campaign created by Perry's attorneys. By Saturday, that support reached $1,400,314, with donations averaging $821 a minute, causing the website to disable for over an hour.

Donations averaged more than $1,100 per minute at one point before the site got overwhelmed and shut down.

Penny is facing second-degree manslaughter charges in New York City stemming from the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man with a criminal record and over 40 arrests reportedly threatening subway riders who died after being subdued by the Marine veteran.

Well this isn't a good development in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Will MushHead flex his super-duper masculine muscle?

Video footage captured the massive explosions of a Russian strike on a Ukrainian weapons depot, where Ukraine was reported to be storing depleted uranium shells supplied by NATO. The shells, which were sent to Ukraine to attack Russian tanks, are radioactive and known to cause massive outbreaks of cancer and birth defects while turning the places where they’re detonated into a wasteland.

The ONT Musical Interlude & DIY Emporium

With an ego like this, he would be a perfect politician.

Lil Wayne abruptly ended the final show of his “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour” at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on Saturday after accusing the crowd of disrespecting his fellow performers.

“We appreciate it, but we ain’t about to be bending over backwards for these folks. We work too hard for this shit. We work way too hard,” Lil Wayne told the audience.

Wayne’s concert got off to a rocky start after the rapper took the stage more than an hour later the scheduled start time. After playing for about 30 minutes, Weezy left the stage so that members of his Young Money label — including Lil Twist, Yaj Kader, and Allan Cubas — could perform.

On this day in music, May 14, 1998, it was the end of an era when 82-year-old Frank Sinatra died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, following a heart attack. Known as the “Chairman of the Board” and later “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” the singer and actor was among the most popular entertainers in the 1940s–1960s. Today, he remains one of the world’s best-selling recording artists. Sinatra first rose to fame in 1940 with “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” and signed to Columbia Records in 1943. During his lengthy career, he placed over 25 Top 40 singles, including 1966’s chart-topper, “Strangers In the Night.” Among his many honors, Sinatra won 11 Grammys and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. via thisdayinmusic.com

Bluetooth technology isn't difficult. Even I know how to use it. Not our Genius Award Winner.

Here is a tip for perverts everywhere:

If you are planning to masturbate while watching a porno on your phone while at your apartment complex’s outdoor pool, do not connect your device to a Bluetooth speaker because amplified moaning will bring unwanted attention.

Florida police were summoned to The Palms of Clearwater development Sunday night after a witness reported seeing a man “pull his pants down” and “begin to masturbate to a pornographic video on his personal cell phone.”

Cops identified the accused masturbator as Christopher Harris, 51, a resident of The Palms, which describes itself as a “Mediterranean Oasis” only minutes from the Clearwater beaches.

Absolutely untrue. When the British announced that they were shipping depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine, they announced that that the depleted uranium was perfectly harmless, and was therefore perfectly appropriate to use in Eastern Ukraine.

Therefore, having the DU shells blow up in an arms depot in Western Ukraine is also perfectly harmless.

It was a couple of really impressive blasts when the Russians hit the depot:

82 The Washington Post published an interesting article this weekend, which begins:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has won the trust of Western governments by refusing to use the weapons they provide for attacks inside Russia and prioritizing the targeting of Russian forces inside Ukraine’s borders.

But behind closed doors, Ukraine’s leader has proposed going in a more audacious direction – occupying Russian villages to gain leverage over Moscow, bombing a pipeline that transfers Russian oil to Hungary, a NATO member, and privately pining for long-range missiles to hit targets inside Russia’s borders, according to classified U.S. intelligence documents detailing his internal communications with top aides and military leaders.

None of this is a surprise - the surprise is that the Washington Post published this. (Most of the comments to the article denounced the Post for publishing the article).

Methinks that we've gotten wind of a Zelensky plot to do a spectacular attack inside Russia, and the Washington Post, as the official media outlet of the Deep State, is publicly warning him off of this.

146 It’s not so much that the depleted uranium is radioactive. The half-life of U238 is so long that it’s just barely radioactive. The problem with DU is that uranium is a highly toxic heavy metal. They use it in shells for piercing armor because it’s heavy, it’s dense, and it’s pyrophoric, so it ignites and burns through armor. But that leaves toxic dust all over the area.

191 Publius, I missed the tire talk yesterday on the ONT.

One thing to try on a small tire that won't seat the bead on the rim is to use a tie around the middle of the tread, all the way around. I have used bungee cords and swearing but I suspect a ratchet and a strap would be easier.

When you run a tie around the tire on the middle of the tread, all around the wheel, it compresses the tread down and deforms the sides of the tire out to contact the bead, it will hold a bit of pressure and start to inflate and seat the bead tighter until you can take off the bungees.

I used dish soap and water to try to make a better seal, no idea if that did any good.

192 I missed the Gun Thread tonight because I was watching Sisu. The 200 or so seat theatre was a good 70% full, surprising my friend as he'd read it wasn't getting good turnout although he admitted that maybe the reviewer he had read had been at an odd time or the like.

It was alot of fun especially as I'm not a filmgoer at all. [Dunkirk, 300, Master and Commander being the only in-theatre films I've seen in 20+ years!]

Suspending disbelief for some military/weapons aspect aside, that 90% of regular audiences wouldn't recognize, that I had no difficulty doing despite being a military history buff.

Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at May 14, 2023 11:08 PM (Vwz3I)

193 Looks like they had an undersized T-55 reproduction [perhaps disguised as a StuG self-propelled gun?] with stowage boxes and the like surrounding the turret so the gun only pointed forward and masked that it had a turret at all.

And I might have to rethink getting a 9mm carbine considering the efficacy of Schmeisser bullets in the film!

But seriously, a fun revenge/survival movie. I liked the acting fine although not outstanding. [It helped that the main protagonist looked alot like a bearded friend of mine!] So worth the ticket price if you're not in the mood for a serious film.

Now that you mention it, I remember my father and I were having trouble with a full sized tubeless tire seating. My father did that trick -- we used a small chain and a chain tightener, IIRC, to tighten it up.

I use Dawn and water on tire beads all the time as a lubricant. That helps when breaking one down manually with a tire hammer as well. Slick the edge next to the bead down good.

They make a solution just for that -- the tire machines at the tire places have a reservoir and brush just for that.

But...did the ethnic Russians in Ukraine tell him they were at the literal breaking point? Did he fear that the US was cooking up COVID 2 in those bio labs? Did he decide that the US couldn't afford to pay all this money and would choose to let him do what he wanted to avoid bankruptcy?

I think Putin looked at the world of 2020, terrified of its own shadow and preoccupied with forcing the peasants into ridiculous social experiments as the elites debauch themselves into moral oblivion, and figured that he could get away with anything. Not unlike how Hitler probably saw the ineffectual, depression-addled world of the 1930s. He really should have known that nobody tarpits invaders like the Slavs, though, seeing as how he is one.

There was a guy hanging "Vax the Jews" signs from highways. The media handled it as a "white supremacy is on the march" story.

I actually went and looked into it. It wasn't that hard to find the guy behind it. He was a former rapper who was marginally successful (he's got a couple of videos on youtube) who partnered with other marginally successful black rappers. The claim was he made enough money from selling "white supremacist literature on the internet to pay for his house, his signs, and traveling around the country."

I ended up on leftist boards to get info on him, because as you point out the left often doxxes people they don't like...but in this case the doxxer was told by other leftists to knock it off...which was interesting.

Was he a glowie? I think its hard to argue no. Not only did the guy not look the part, but he'd got money from nowhere, a profile where white supremacy doesn't fit, and leftists saying to leave him alone (just like Ray Epps)

And tires be black, yo!

Posted by: Diogenes at May 14, 2023 11:54 PM (anj39)

280 One thing to try on a small tire that won't seat the bead on the rim is to use a tie around the middle of the tread, all the way around.

Posted by: Kindltot at May 14, 2023 11:07 PM (xhaym)

The "ether trick" is easier. If a tubeless tire won't bead, simply spray some ether (starting fluid) into the interior of the tire, and ignite it. I use a twist of paper towel soaked in solvent and set alight, on the end of a looong stick as the ignition device. You get a loud pop! and the pressure developed beads the tire. Too little ether, and you get a weak pop that doesn't bead the tire. Too much ether, it displaces most of the air from the tire, and you get a weak pop, and a brief fire. Pretty safe, really.

282 In 2022 the USAF tested two A-10Cs against tanks fitted with reactive armor. The Warthogs still killed the tanks with their GAU-8 cannons.
Posted by: Anna Puma

Well, the reactive "armor" is only meant to counter-act the penetration "jet" from Anti-armor weapons like the TOW missile. High energy kinetic rounds from the A-10 would just punch through them like a hot knife through butter.

Natural uranium has about 0.7% U-235. Separation of U-235 from Natural Uranium makes "natural" uranium...depleted. Mostly U-238 remains, which has a half-life of something like 4.5 billion years, and is not very radioactive...at all.
U-235 is the isotope with the degenerate nucleus, pretty radioactive and is needed in about a 50:50 weight ratio to achieve fission (shot into a U-238 target).
Plutonium 239, which does not occur naturally (at least in this world), is now used in fission implosion triggers for H-bombs (Deuterium-tritium fusion).
Or fuel for fission reactors, at lower levels.

Posted by: irongrampa at May 15, 2023 12:04 AM (KATBx)

285 I think Pu 239 has been detected in that natural reactor in west Africa, a site where uranium was so concentrated that fission occurred naturally in episodes when water flooded the deposit. IIRC, it was the detection of plutonium that proved the deposit had gone critical at least once in its history.

Oklo consists of 16 sites at which self-sustaining nuclear fission reactions are thought to have taken place approximately 1.7 billion years ago, and ran for hundreds of thousands of years. It is estimated to have averaged under 100 kW of thermal power during that time.

I remember those. Many tire machines now come with a ring of nozzles that blast a huge volume of air into the tire to bead it. 300 Well, made it safe and sound to Helena, MT. Touched base with my friends here, and I have a plan, going forward. The "new" Suburban drove fine other than having twitchy steering. But I think I know what's causing it. One of the pivot points, steering box, idler arm, or a ball joint, is stiff from lack of lubrication. Idler arm is the prime candidate here. Takes a lot of force to overcome the stiffness; then the joint moves, and the truck lurches in that direction. Then I correct, and it lurches the other way. With that much friction in the steering parts, the natural self-centering forces induced by caster in the alignment are negated, giving it twitchy handling behavior. But it's also an easy fix.

303 Minus the warbling tremolo of vibrato at a mosquito-killing frequency, Edith Pilaf did not have a terrible voice.

Even with the recording limitations of the day, she was on-pitch, on time and tempo, and was emotive to the lyric and song.

But yeah, that warble would curdle milk at fifty paces.

As far as "wrecked" voices? Janis Joplin > Stevie Nicks.

The former had the smoke and whisky scorched voice of a low rent barfly. The later had the flat bleat of a barnyard goat in heat.

Janis could bring the Blues and the Rock. What she lacked in voice, she made up for in performance.

308 Anyway, my plan is to to through the legal hoops to import the "new" '99 Suburban to Canada, and licence it there. Then take my '08 Suburban and my own car trailer to Cedar City, and fetch back the dead one. Use the very nice, and correct color interior from the dead one to make the new one nice inside, and sell the hulk of the dead one for parts. Should be a good market for a rust-free Arizona suburban body shell in rust-belt Alberta.

Tires were once all white. They became black when tire manufacturers found that adding carbon black (soot) to the mix got them more tires to the gallon of liquid latex, and made them more durable to boot. You will see completely white tires on some really old antique cars, say 1910 and earlier.

315 As far as "wrecked" voices? Janis Joplin > Stevie Nicks.

The former had the smoke and whisky scorched voice of a low rent barfly. The later had the flat bleat of a barnyard goat in heat.

Janis could bring the Blues and the Rock. What she lacked in voice, she made up for in performance.

Plus, Janis dumped a beer on Jim Morrison's head, which to my mind, puts her above any performer of her day, and beyond..

373 Sorry to show up late.

That story about the anti-capitalist cafe going out of business reminds me of a related story from near where I live.

There was a cafe in Kirkland, Washington called "Terra Bite Lounge" where they posted suggested prices, and you could pay what you wanted, or just not pay.

It wasn't an angry anti-capitalist thing. The founder said he wanted people who are down on their luck to be able to go to the cafe and get a cup of coffee or whatever.

It went quite well for a while! The founder said that most people were nice about it... paying the suggested price and even throwing in a little extra to help the cafe carry the people who weren't paying.

But young people who don't have much money found out about this place, and began systematically going there and getting food without paying. It was close to the Kirkland bus center, so they rode in from all over to get free stuff. Instead of a few people benefiting from the place, a group was exploiting it. The place couldn't carry the extra load and had to close down.

381 "nation’s history and tradition" - Judge is citing SCOTUS' Heller decision, which is a narrow reinvention of the Right documented in the 2nd Amendment.

2A says the Right "Shall Not Be Infringed". Period.

Heller opinion narrowed this to only allow the Right for weapons that Federal Courts had a "history and tradition" of allowing. Very different thing. SCOTUS has no authority to rewrite the Constitution. Only an Amendment can rewrite an Amendment. No federal law, no Court Opinion can ever add new conditions or qualifications to the text of the Constitution.
