Top Story

  • The Asus Flashtor (not FlashStor as I had it previously) is in stock right now on Amazon's US and AU sites. I couldn't find it before because I was spelling it wrong.*

Curiously enough the Australian pricing is almost exactly at MSRP when you account for exchange rates and sales tax, while the US price is 8% higher. Usually it's very much the other way around - Gigabyte's laptops for example cost 30% more in Australia.

I want one, but I won't be able to afford to fill it with SSDs until maybe September. I think it supports volume capacity upgrades, though, so I can start with one SSD and then add a couple more at a time. (One reason to go for Btrfs over ZFS.)

    * Wait, no. I had it right. The listings on Amazon are wrong - and it's being sold directly by Asus.

  • Intel is not having a good day. (Tom's Hardware)

Sales for Q1 of 2023 were down 36% over 2022 and profits were down 133%, which is, well, bad; the company lost $2.8 billion. Mind you, that's 30% less than Facebook's Metaverse project lost in the same period.

Server chips usually save Intel when consumer sales are weak, but not this time: Consumer products were down 38%, while datacenter products were down 39%. Mobileye was the only bright spot with sales up 16%

I have no idea what Mobileye is.

LOL. I read the popular tech like the Verge and CNet because I love mocking the journalism majors that convert what should be a technical discussion into something approximating a discussion that usually ends up with "does this dress my ass look big?"

I get more out of your rants about the four essential keys. Please, keep this up. It is lovely.

Morning, LiS,

Yes, the Killer Kittens are here. I've taken to bringing the smaller carrier out in the evenings and letting them play in and around it, to distract them from the window blinds. Unlike most of my cats, they don't hate and fear the carrier, in fact they run right to and into it. Stirling the big black one kneaded and nuzzled me as usual this morning.

21 This is sort of tech-ish. I've had my modern smart TV since Nov. 2020 and have never been able to get the local PBS station over the air. I know, a lot of their programming is woke or in with the climate change scare, but the Nature series has animals that Miss Linda likes, and the occasional British mystery is fun. I've done the re-scan thing several times to pick up new channels; never could get that channel, including after the most recent scan last month . . . until I stumbled across it last night. Peculiar.

Good trip, I think I'm doing something useful for the population and Marines defending the place. Just hope our Junta doesn't fuck it up by the numbers like they do everything else.

Every time my son moves, which is about once a year right now because he attending a university, he has to replace a couple blinds because Nadine, his calico kitty, has destroyed a couple because they block her view outside. In other news Nadine got trained to wear a body harness and walk on a leash. They look ridiculous when they go on walks. In other, other news he takes her the local pub where she rides in on his shoulder and the lays in the middle of the floor because be cause she gets attention. Drama Queen Maximus comes to mind.

I haven't partaken of any of it. 14 hour days, and then sleep, do over. Made myself walk down to the beach today and take a photo so I could say I had done so.

Honestly, there is a 5th column of Chinese tourists here, and I'm very glad to have packed business casual clothes with no logo or identifying shiz on them for who I work for or what I do. I'm paranoid about opsec since I got targeted by the chinks back in 2010 for a project I worked.

Posted by: BifBewalski at April 28, 2023 04:48 AM (JCfas)

27 Personally I don't really care about the blinds here, except they make the place look trashy from outside as well as in if they're broken. I long ago waved bye-bye to my damage deposit. And clearly the mismanagement here doesn't care about the property. When I leave, which I keep hoping will be this year, they can have the joy of replacing blinds, fixing the bedroom ceiling, and swapping out the carpet (which I have kept clean for many years, but it's old).

28 Can't get PBS over the air and then I can. Wasup with that - Posted by Wolfus and paraphrased by the deranged.

This is going to be fun: Maybe you were holding it wrong. Or, the Chicom spies next you moved out and took their surveillance electronics with them.

In case PBS over the air bombs out on you, PBS has an app that should be available across the various platforms (I use Roku). The only complication is PBS has taken to locking up episodes in an attempt to force you pay for them after you have already paid for them with your taxes.

What about moving the antenna? What platform is your TV running? If it is Roku I will look up the "secret code" for you that allows you to see channel signal strength.

Welp, we do have Quemado, NM which translates to Burnt apparently. It is down the road from Pie Town, NM which raises the question was Quemado created as a commentary about Pie Town's pies or anatomy. It is a mystery. New Mexico is like that. The peeps that live in Madrid, NM demand it be pronounced Mad-Rid. The peeps in Los Cerrillos always pronounce it Ma-drid to irritate the Mad-Riddens. I am not making this up. I love living here.

35 LiS, I don't have a Roku. I bought the TV, it sensed my home WiFi network during setup, and that was pretty much it. I can get YooToob and Pluto and Tubi, things like that, but most of my TV nowadays is over-the-air, the geezer channels, and my local CBS and Fox outlets for the traffic and weather in the morning.

By the way: Out of curiosity after your reports about southern NM, I looked on Zillow for homes for sale in my (admittedly cheap) price range in Las Cruces. There wasn't much in the way of 2-3 BR homes. The closest place with a few houses I liked was over in Alamogordo. I even saw one in the famous Roswell. Maybe I could talk Linda into moving there. . . .

So the issue here is prices have gone nuts. I paid $175K for my place (3 bedroom 2 bath 1500 sq ft) with a couple necessary improvements in 2019 a price that maybe increase by $60K over 15 years. Today this is worth just over $300K. I nailed my timing when I moved here. With that said, Alamogordo is a city of about 30K and it is a lovely small town. It sits right at the base of Sacramento Mountains which are beautiful. That is a win if you are OK with a city that size. Silver City is in a beautiful area and it should be on the list. Deming is a possibility (it is an hour from Las Cruces) and is very livable but less attractive than the others. If you are thinking about this area as a possibility you need to start serious research - this area is getting found.

59 I got a thinkpad laptop recently with win11 pre-installed. Decent specs, nothing taxing running on it, still ran like raw molasses on a winter's morning. Three minutes just to open file explorer (yes, i measured). New memory. New ssd. HW monitor shows no bad voltage or temps. Even did a complete wipe and clean re-install of the OS, and ppbbbthbth. Junk.

So i dumped Clippy and put on Ubuntu's latest LTS distro.

Thing runs like a greased gazelle in a lion enclosure now. And it's immeasurably easier to use for the little development project I'm using it for, too.

Oh, yeah -- 30K sounds fine, as long as there are places to get your car worked on and there are medical facilities. After discussions with NaCly Dog and Notsothoreau, I've been thinking about Kansas, esp. Salina, which is a little larger. I am so sick of having a million people around me that 50-75K sounds great.

If a decent property in S NM cost $200K and up, I'm out of luck. I don't need anything fancy, just want something that can be properly air-conditioned in the hottest weather, has a carport/garage or that I can add one to, and is safe and friendly.

Alamogordo does everything you ask and it is about an hour to the airport in El Paso and Las Cruces. It is pretty dope. I came here in 2017 because real estate and property taxes were inexpensive, and it was some place I knew I would fall in love with. You should put it on your consideration list. I'm doing even better than that. I got my cousin, the re-tard meteorologist interested in something: soil temperatures vs air temperatures over the course of the day.

We were talking what we was a-plantin' in our gardens, and soil temperature ranges for various things. I got interested in insolation on the soil. Soil temp will get higher than air temp when the sun is shining, and there are lags. Soil low may be nowhere near air low.

That got a bee under his bonnet, and he's been compiling data. Sent me a chart he put together.

LiS, I would love to take you up on that. I loved NM when I first visited in '92; it changed my whole attitude toward this dump here. Imagine -- being outdoors in late May, in a rain shower, and my hands in my pockets were *dry*! I've been back, but not since '01 or so, and have only visited Carlsbad in the southern half of the state.

I'll have a look at listings in Alamogordo. Since I'm never going to pay off any house I buy, as long as the note is affordable to me, I guess I could go for more $$$ to get into a better property. If I make my 20% down payment, and the property is ready to move in, I'll be okay.

My Pauline Kael hot take based solely on the people i know is that the people who are getting stoned now always did, they just do it more now. Basically the customer base isn't increasing much, but the market size is.

Although add in the fact that alcohol is becoming passé amongst the younger crowd in favor of basically everything else, especially weed vape pens. But they were already unemployable because they can't find their genitals with a map and both hands, and can't do basic arithmetic or even rudimentary reading comprehension. It's not like there was much fruit set on that tree to get damaged in the first place.

Who the hell knows.

I just went outside and took a Las Cruces where weed is legal. there are the too many places to buy weed phase - the real money will be made are the inevitable consolidation goes all grim reaper on the excess capacity. The State of New Mexico is getting less tax revenue than they thought because the state is run by communists, the number of jobs is, hell I have no idea, but if being a bud tender is your ideal career this is the place to be. I haven't noticed any increase in the number of people laying around high - just the same drug addicts living in tents around town, and if you have a job that drug tests and you still smoke weed you deserve to be unemployed.

I took out a 30 year loan to get the payment down which is insane form somebody that just retired but it worked. My critical cost is fixed and that is a massive win. I checked in on my son who is wrapping up his university studies for classical guitar performance and education. He is doing a teaching practicum middle school about an hour north of Seattle where the kids come from challenged home lives, low incomes, drugs, and gangs. This a smaller city whose economic base comes from farming, logging, and fishing. Yesterday a girl OD in a bathroom and there were a few alerts for firearms because some knuckleheads were banging heads. He and I had a serious discussion what to do at the first sound of a gun shot or an alert of an active shooter. When he came into this world I was filled with awe that he was alive, then proud of him for fulfilling his life long goals and today I am terrified he will be murdered in a middle school. God help us.

I started pushing him a year ago and got him to start thinking differently and it worked. He found something that lit him up and then he hustled the gig. This gig is a game changer and the company has lots of divisions that do all kinds of technical work. A year from now he is going to be a very different person and for the better. Seems less than optimal.

And I had no idea this species of bird was native and non-migratory in Kentucky. The more you know...

My buddy runs a music department. He's made a huge push towards teaching more about non-western music. Nothing about it tears down the western canon though. He elevates everything, together. There is so much that's fascinating about how music and history intertwine, between all cultures, and so much about Western music that gets lost by the typical "this period of music corresponds to this period of art and history and that's all you need to know for The Test" approach.

But this dipshit lazy faculty lounge idea that western music Bad and non-western music Good is just plain bullshit. Again, it's just boring lazy blackmail. "Tear down your culture and history Or Else".

New Mexico is a great place to live and it is affordable. When your read the guides it gets slammed and that is complete BS - it ain't perfect - but for the right person it hard to beat. For somebody that is retiring, well, it is so excellent. Property taxes here are capped at how fast they can go up - once in your in your are in a good place. My taxes are $1500 per year for a house that has gone from $160K to over $300K in 4 years. Alamogordo is a smaller and more affordable Las Cruces.

The old defintion of vaccine was something that gave "immunity". Meaning, most of the time in most people, it conferred immunity, same as infection with the actual disease.

They started playing around with that definition, changing it to "provokes an immune response".

Now, they're saying that any old thing Pharma wants to call a vaccine is okay by them.
