Friday Overnight Open Thread – 4/21/2023 [Roger Ball]

An ONT of PATTERN and LOGIC

Greetings, horde! Actually, if you are looking for either one, you might want to click elsewhere. But in the meantime, if Antarctica is on your bucket list, you might get there this way (inspired by the Flight Aware Morning News):

Neat. Just like a real airport except it’s all ice and snow. There’s even a fire truck!

If that one piqued your interest, here’s a 2015 vid from the “first commercial airliner to land onto the Antarctica ice”. Fly along with the great adventurers in an Icelandic Boeing 757 (with subtitles).

Airliners flying to Antarctica are not a new thing. Typical for Pan Am Airways, the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser Clipper America was the first commercial airliner to fly to the “nethermost” continent in 1957: This Day in Aviation

15 October 1957: A Pan American World Airways Boeing Model 377 Stratocruiser, Clipper America, flies from Christchurch, New Zealand, to the United States Navy’s Antarctic research station on Ross Island in McMurdo Sound.

The flight was to test the feasibility of conducting commercial flights to support the U.S. Navy’s operations in the Antarctic. It originated with a load of passengers from NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and flew to San Francisco, California, then on to Honolulu in the Hawaiian Islands.

The ”happy” crew on the ice:

Ball - Boeing 377 crew on ice.JPG

There’s more on this wonderful story at the Pan Am Historical Foundation.

For those not familiar with the old radial engine prop liners, I was a little surprised that Pan Am sent a Strat instead of the reliable old DC-6. The four Pratt and Whitney 28-cylinder, 4360 cubic inch engines provided over 3000 horsepower each, so there was plenty of power. The trick was getting them started without catching fire or having other maintenance problems. Cold temperatures tended to compound the challenges. But by 1957, Pan Am had been flying the Strat for a decade so I guess they had those challenges well in hand.

Of course, you can go by boat…er ship…if that’s more your speed. You will have to study up, though.

There are almost 30 Antarctica cruise ships sailing each season. This fact often overwhelms prospective travelers.

Of course, unless you’re an experienced cruiser with quickly adapting sea legs, you may want to pack a good supply of Dramamine or Scopolamine patches.

It takes 2-3 days to cross the Drake Passage from Ushuaia, Argentina. You'll either have wild seas with big swings and high seas, nothing at all, or something in between. It's an experience to be embraced, not feared.

In any case, all of the above is better than the “Shackleton Antarctic Cruise Experience”

“She’s going, boys,” came the cry. “It’s time to get off.”

Ball - Shackleton on ice.JPG

Hmm…did anyone bring snacks?

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the planet: Stunning Photos of Polar Bears Relaxing Oh, so cuddly, no? Hope he/she/zher/etc. isn’t hungry.

Ball - Polar Bear relaxing.JPG

This is a pretty cool post from 1440.

If anyone took geology or, like me, geomorphology, this should be of interest. Even if you were an underwater basket weaving major, this is a cool way of viewing a critical aspect (i.e. fresh water) of our wondrous planet.

Mapping the World’s River Basins by Continent

Thanks to the planet’s natural slopes and ridges, falling rain that isn’t absorbed by soil or evaporated also ends up in nearby rivers. This area—where all flowing surface water converges—is called a river basin, drainage basin, or watershed.

At my own peril, I will now address DEI. If you are up on current events, or just woke, you will immediately identify the acronym as standing for “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion”, and you would not be wrong in the technical sense. However, if that is the only association you make, you are excluding some other equally wonderful and novel definitions applicable to diverse (heh) subjects. For example, I think my favorite is “Doofenshmirtz Evil, Inc.” (Phineas and Ferb; TV show) I never watched that one for some reason but I am happy to add one more definition: Destroy Every Institution. I did not originate the usage as it has been used in various ways at varying times in history since institutions became part of the human condition. In 2012, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) famously opined: ”...this president [Obama] has tried to destroy every institution that makes America great…”

In America today, one would have to admit that Senator Inhofe’s observation has benefited from a major steroid regimen. It seems everything traditionally American must be attacked, changed, or erased. Our elite betters at Stanford University helpfully published the guide against ‘harmful language’ — including the word ‘American’

Under a section titled “Imprecise Language,” the guide advises readers to replace the term “American” with “U.S. citizen.”

“[‘American’] often refers to people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the US is the most important country in the Americas,” the packet reasons, noting that the region actually includes 42 countries between North and South America.

Ball - Obama - My legacy will be.JPG

Got the picture yet?

Meh…I just made myself nauseous. Maybe I should engage in some Happy Thoughts.

Happy thoughts come from previous experiences we once enjoyed and now reflect back on. They are situations that shape how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Like positive thinking, happy thoughts improve our overall well-being and help us live more fulfilling lives. These thoughts lower our stress by instantly enhancing our mood and ushering in feelings of happiness and joy.

Did you notice, however, that the post does not seem to be very diverse (heh). 75% of the pictures included in the body of the post are attractive white women. The tail-end-Charlie picture is the generally vanishing happy white man. I have no explanation for such an egregious lack of diversity.

Do you remember when Seinfeld first came on the scene in 1989 and was hailed as a “show about nothing”? No diversity, no equity, no inclusion: literally nothing.

By the time this post was published in March of 2000, Seinfeld had run nine seasons and had increased its rating every season to finish with a respectable 22.0.

In its final season, Seinfeld reached a mark that settled the show for good in the hearts of fans and the history of television ratings. At this point, the whole country was either watching or talking about Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer.

Ah, those halcyon pre-Nine-Eleven days of amusing nothingness.

Finally, a tribute to cool office spaces:

25 Excerpt from the closing thoughts pf the last podcast I was listening to link in nic)

And what happens with materialist Christianity, every time, is it devolves into politics. If it’s conservative materialist Christianity, it devolves into right-wing politics; if it’s liberal materialist Christianity, it devolves into liberal politics—but in both cases you’re using fundamentally material means to try to bring about or enforce some idea of justice or to create some kind of utopia on earth through purely physical means, which means—‘material means’ means force. It means force, either in the form of direct force and violence or social force, the force of public shame and public will and public sentiment. Your enemies become the people who disagree with you: they’re the enemy that has to be defeated and destroyed.

And we’re trying to do all this without God being involved, because we’re doing it without priesthood, and we’re doing it without worship, and we’re doing it without sacrifice, so the only thing we can possibly create is hell on earth.

Jesus is not going to stop short of perfecting us, but understand that it's a job He's doing in us and we have little power to help. Recall the thief on the cross who simply asked Christ to remember him and Jesus responded by promising "This day you will be with me in Paradise." Now consider how much righteousness in his life the thief could claim. Probably not much!

43 I rag on Walmart damn near every day but I had a yugely positive experience with them today. Long story short, I forgot one of my bags of groceries at the checkout line - I used one with a cashier. I didn't realize it until I returned home. Naturally, it was the bag with all the expensive stuff in it - meats, fish, etc. Damn near $60 worth. FML. I called them and told them what I had done and the guy at the desk told me to come on back in and bring the receipt. Which I did. He informed me they never hold forgotten bags of perishables and re-stock them as soon as possible. He said to go get as close to the original items as I could and bring them back to the service desk, which I did. He then logged them in some sort of logbook and sent me on my way without any further charges or hassle.

And there's always the right of the conqueror approach, though in all practicality it would be a minimum of 20 years before I think I have enough automated military assets to challenge the said treaties, which runs into the point where they expire.

2nd reaction: Though I can see a case both ways, I lean toward suspending the boycott now that it's yielded actual results. In my mind, part of the reason for a boycott is not just to punish bad behavior, but to demonstrate that good behavior has corresponding rewards. If A-B has learned its lesson, ending things now might yield the greatest benefits.

(Note that my position is based on that reasoning alone, not on how much A-B contributes to the GOP slush fund.)

71 Jesus is not going to stop short of perfecting us, but understand that it's a job He's doing in us and we have little power to help. Recall the thief on the cross who simply asked Christ to remember him and Jesus responded by promising "This day you will be with me in Paradise." Now consider how much righteousness in his life the thief could claim. Probably not much!

It is hugely important to remember that we are made clean not by our own efforts or actions, but by God's actions and God's initiative. That's what Grace is. And then recall the story of Peter in Acts 10:15: "Again, a second time, the voice said to him, “What God has made clean, do not call impure.”

77 Admiral Byrd, on his second Antarctic Expedition in 1934, overwintered alone at Advance Base where he was relaying meteorological readings back to base camp. His messages were becoming garbled, so the men at base camp had to attempt rescue. Finally successful getting to him on their third try, they found Byrd suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and not well. A faulty vent on a heater was to blame. He recovered and went on to bigger and even better Antarctic adventures.

78 Evening.

RE: American/US Citizen.

It's a common complaint amongst the Latin American nations that "We're Americans, too!" And that the term American should refer to anyone in this hemisphere. But then I think, yeah? And what about the Canadians? Because they rather like being Canadian and absolutely *hate* being confused for Americans.

Secondly, I think of the Europeans. One can refer to Europeans as such. It's a continent, it's a people. And that's the thing. There is a "European peoples." In other words, a race. There is no "American race." There are only nationalities. All those countries south of us have their own nationalities and we have ours. And ours has been clearly defined for well over 300 years by this point.

We are American.

So nyer! :p

I've ditched Amazon, Ebay, and a bunch of others over leftist shenanigans so it's not like I wouldn't go for it; unfortunately those guys apparently offer enough DEALZZZ for people to overlook the nastiness that got them there. Let me say something that doesn't really fit in with my Christian faith, and that frankly I don't think about much at all anymore. I used to be terribly afraid to fly, mainly because I had a recurring series of very vivid dreams about my death in an airplane crash. Then one day it hit me - those weren't a prediction, those were just memories, and they didn't matter anymore. After that, the fear went away and so did the dreams.

and maybe it was just a trick I told myself to get rid of the fear, I don't know. but it worked.

And buddy's Jeep was overheating. I go to my house, park the Jeep, and we all pile in the Suburban for the drive to Tortilla Flat. Get out there, no problem, have beers and a burger. Get almost all the way back, and I am hearing a strange "chiff, chiff, chiff" noise from the engine. Go to turn onto Mountain View Road, and the engine quits right there, and won't crank. I coast about a half mile, and roll onto shoulder. Odd scorched smell from engine.

Turn onto the last road, hearing that odd noise again, and once more the engine quits. Buddy pulls up behind me, and gives the burb a shove with his push bumper, and I coast to the curb at our destination.
Sounds like the catalytic converter is clogged, and strangling the engine. After a cool-down (two beers worth), it started again, but not readily. Drove to buddy's other shop; will put it on the hoist and cut out the cat.

It was so bad that on his disastrous 4th voyage, when Columbus and his crew were shipwrecked on Jamaica. two of his men staged an amazing open ocean crossing in a native canoe to let the Governor of Hispaniola know what had happened - and the Governor let Columbus and his crew sit on the beach in rags for over a year before he finally got around to sending a ship over to check on them.

I suspect that Columbus had spoken to someone who had touched by accident on the New World. There was enough traffic down Africa for the passage to the Indies via the Cape for someone to have been blown off to Brazil and then fighting a way back to Europe, and taking any information from that to rejigger the world maps using his suppositions to support his fudging on his math.

Cook was given the type of death ceremony that the islanders gave kings, which was to boil away the flesh, separate the bones, bundle the bones away to be placed in a niche in the cliffside by a native who would be tasked with that as his last act on earth. Then the soft tissues would be delivered to the family, which the natives did do.
Of course, the Brits took great offense at this and cannonaded the native village.

241 Our church now sponsors a Bible study at a local bar on a weeknight.

I talked with the owner of the bar a great deal about the Bible late at night over the years. Eventually got him to come to our Sunday school. Then he wanted us to have a Bible study at his bar, so I talked with the pastor and somewhat surprisingly, he was all for it, as was the rest of the governing board.

You'd be surprised how many people will come to a bar to learn and discuss Scripture that are afraid to come into a church. Many individuals join our discussion group, and it's wonderful.

I hate that this is so, but I have to admit that I was the same in the beginning. Now I don't think I could not go to church. It feeds my soul and keeps me from a constant state of despair, and it's my tiny opportunity to take time to look up and say thank you to the Lord.

It has always pissed me off that us lower/mid level guys that do the work get fired for rather minor mess ups but the higher level suits get to retire or take a leave of absence, especially if the screw up is monstrous.

Another example - New Coke. Nothing too extreme happened to the suit that okayed that stroke of genius but there were plenty of drivers and warehousemen that got the ax over the years for a (comparatively) minor wreck or trashing of a few pallets of product.

That makes sense. I've found rewatchability isn't based on the jokes, it isn't based on the story, it's based on the likeability of the characters.

And Seinfeld has no story, and characters you'd like to hit with a gym sock full of quarters.

I have always understood his optimism/fluffing/embellishment, etc. as that of the train conductor. He did show up the big falsehood of all of it. Solving problems have nothing in common with DC (DS, Congress, SC) view that every common sense fix is needing a committee to fuck around with it.

Remember, years ago, how all talk about, for example, Alaska oil drilling was always oh, ah, but that won't matter until 10 years down the road, yadda...

....

The Lord raises nations up for His use, and he tears them down when He is through with them.

What Americans have trouble recognizing is that they aren't the center of the story of history, because we have been at the forefront for a period.

But our period is over. Our purpose has been served and our nation of cruel, ungodly sodomite worshippers that enslaved people (sometimes in shackles, sometimes economically, sometimes by medical experiment), carried out unjust murderous wars, sacrificed millions of unborn at the alter of vanity and greed, and set up for ourselves false gods and pagan rituals will be entered into a time of destruction in which our wickedness is repaid in full.

The hope we have is as individuals that obey the Word, who profess with their mouths and deeds the name of Jesus. But our institution is dead and we will be brought low in righteous judgement, as is appropriate.

We've earned death and destruction, and we shall have our wages paid.

315 289 One thing that's hard for people learning situational awareness: Do not allow yourself to feel embarassed when you take passive defensive steps.

"Oh, I'd hate to insult that poor skeevy guy by walking OUT of His path. If I've judged incorrectly, his feelings will be hurt, and all his resentments over being historically oppressed will be validated! I'm too GOOD and tolerant a person to offend him like that!"

One book that might shock a newbie out of stupidity is "The Gift of Fear," by de Becker. He gets some stuff wrong in there, but it's still a waker-upper.

And remember, passive defense (locking your car doors, refusing to get on an elevator with a thug) makes Barack Obama cry, in case you remember the views he stated on the subject,

The Galactic Year, the time it takes for Sol and his minions to make one circuit around the big ol' black hole at the center of the Milky Way, is "about" 230 million years. The error bars on that are pretty big, though.

Turns out this is pretty good time scale for cosmic phenomena. The Universe is about 61 Galactic Years old. Sol is just about 20, and the Erf itself is just a bit younger than that.

The galactic gravitational field is much more complicated than simple inverse square. It's a disk, not a spherical distribution, and so the orbit of the solar system around it is not a simple ellipse or close to it.

Besides circling around, it also bobs up and down though the galactic plane, along the z-axis. The period between plane crossings is about 60 million years. T

I forget, but I think we're on an upswing now. There may be a correlation between this bobbing and long term climate and extinction events through geologic history. That's being debated.

Goodnite, good people. Be safe and sleep well.

381 Hi. I'm in a great mood tonight. Hope you are too. 😬

Reason for breaking into comment:
Look, I don't mean to criticize other commenters, but Dorcus Blimline is the worst one-joke troll/sock/whatev - makes Cloggenstein seem erudite and creative -- which I guess Mary is, in her own way. Dorcas makes Michelle Fields' arm complaints seem diverse. One-note Dorcas makes me wish the "posted-by" preceded the comment, ykwim?

See the thousand yard model of the solar system. You can go through it for each planet, but the gist is this:

Put a basketball down, and call that the Sun. Take 26 paces from that, and put a little peppercorn down. That's Erf. Now, keep pacing and at a total of 1000 paces, put a grain of salt down. That's Pluto.

Now, how does that scale relative to the Milky Way Galaxy. Well, let the diameter of the Milky Way be that of the continental United States. The thickness would be about 10 or 20 miles or something like that on that scale.

Now, that 1000 yd model of the Solar System? Throw a quarter on the ground somewhere in east Tennessee. That's the solar system.

Have you seen this to-scale "map" of the solar system? I likes it.

https://tinyurl.com/moon1pixel

You can click the zodiac signs at the top if you don't want to scroll, but the fun stuff is in the empty space between the planets.

Posted by: mikeski at April 22, 2023 01:47 AM (DgGvY)

389
On that scale, the nearest star to us, Proxima Centauri would be about 1000' away from that quarter on the ground.

I forget the numbers, but if you let the average star be the size of a marble, all the stars of the Milky Way on that scale would fit a few "cubic football fields". Take a football field and make a container as high as it wide -- something like that.

So you take just a couple of those full of marbles and scatter it all over the continental US. And that's the galaxy.

I like to ponder the Enormity of it all, sometimes. It makes all this nonsense on this little planet seem so insignificant.

Then, you ponder the time scales. Sol and the planets do their thing on enormous time scales, like clockwork. All this scurrying about on this little rock is just pitiful compared to that.

And the post-rock album I linked before, or just about any other post-rock album, goes well with all the scrolling this map requires.

If that's not enough, here's another good one for sitting in the middle of a few million miles of nothing, by Separated Skies.

395 I have ice on my face and ice in my glass right now. I was using some loppers out in the yard today, cutting back some of the growth along the driveway. One of those branches, freshly cut swung back and caught me right on the left cheek and now I have dried blood and a bruise there. This happens when they finally have dropped the mask mandate at hub's care facility. I might just wear one tomorrow, don't want to frighten anybody. I should have bought a Prius.

Yeah, the masks are good for that-- covering injuries, zits, runny nose when ya don't have a kleenex...

My sister fell and chipped a front tooth in autumn 2020, was glad for mask theater because it was several weeks before she could get it fixed.

Ignoring the fact that that election, too, was stolen, albeit on a smaller scale, still wrong, sez Grover. I wonder how many other elections have been stolen, perhaps Tricky Dick is truly an outlier. Course he done dicked us good with his many bad policy decisions. EPA, gold standard, China, ...
